It’s built over two earthquake fault lines and when the reservoir rises above 150 meters, the gravity dam increases earthquakes by a factor of 8. That’s why it has to open the flood gates. Too much weight and stress on the structure and foundation. The velocity and weight of water rushing through the floodgates must cause vibrations throughout the structure. Let’s hope there no tofu in the dam’s concrete.

@@chrissybabe8568 I think that in this case, as this dam has been built as an absolute showcase for the CCP, they will have made sure that actually capable engineers and process managers kept watertight oversight over things like making sure the right amount of cement was put in each of the numerous batches of concrete. They are not idiotic enough not to know what causes tofu projects and to know how to avoid that happening in those cases that it really matters to them. They would have feared becoming the laughing stock of the world if things would have indeed been allowed to turn sour with their 'number one, largest in the world' mega-dam. Btw, when they started the project half the engineers and experts involved were from the west instead of Chinese, but they sacked them and continued on their own after a while. This may of course have been caused by corruption as usually is the case there when corners are cut with public projects, but I personally think it more likely that in this case that was not what happened and that instead they were confident they knew enough to be able to run (the rest of) the project on their own, which in their eyes would heighten the status of the level of accomplishment.

Canadian civil engineers were hired by China to design the dam. The Canadians wrote that the dam’s design could only handle a reservoir of water 150 meters high. China’s arrogance built it to 180 meters because it wanted to jack up its electricity output. 150 meters of water height in the reservoir has been repeatedly exceeded because of heavy rains and upstream floods. The Canadians balked at a reservoir 180 meters high 6:53because the structure might not be able to withstand the loads. The Canadians were excluded from monitoring best construction practices specified in their design, so there is concern corners were cut in its construction. Even when it was built there were warnings from Chinese civil engineers and hydrologists. Politics prevailed. It was needed for political reasons.

One unpredictable factor is climate change. As rainfall increases, the stress on the dam increases, and over time it will only get worse. It's hard to predict accurately. Remember the dam is only a few years old and there is already noticeable problems. Unless they can build some mitigation projects to relieve the stress on the dam it may be inevitable that the dam fails.
There was absolutely no evidence provided in this video of a potential collapse of this dam. It was primarily about the social impact of the dam which has nothing to do about the dam structure. The video was essentially fearmongering.

Oh No!! Another Three Gorges Dam going to collapse episode. Every year during rainy season it will appear without fail. Either it is cracking or collapsing, since 2006. Must be a very slow collapse.
Wikipedia says the length of 3 Gorges D is: Length 2,335 m (7,661 ft)/ Yes, longer than the Grand Coolie Dam in Washington built in the 1930's,{ which is, nearly a century ago} Length of 1,592 m (5,223 feet) 30% shorter. But the 3G dam's spillway can 'spill' ~4 times the volume of the GC dam. I think that is the impressive number. And the above is more appreciable than merely descriptive/non-comparative statistics.
*The real problem is SILT. Every year 725,000,000 tons of fresh silt settles in the base of the dam. By 2056 it will be full to the top with silt becoming the worlds largest "QUICK-SAND" pit.*
Silting is a major problem and will become much more serious as time passes. Note that the Yangtze floods of the past caused immense damage and death so the 3 Gorges Dam has been beneficial. But big problems are coming.
and yet it has not collapsed yet wonder why maybe they are guessing about things they do not have all the facts about the Dam should be built strong enough to hold so they might be guessing based on incomplete data I mean if it was weak enough to collapse it would have by now you would think so I think they are worrying about nothing just like they worry about covid for nothing just fear mongering
because there is/are good reason for it. the satellite picture alone should make engineers nervous. Normal people live their lives and are oblivious to danger.
When the water level reached it's highest, it actually tilted the world's axis. That should tell you all you need to know. That and maybe that it's top engineer predicted it's failure on his death bed.
Such news are published whenever something major happens. Fact is every mass redistribution be it as little as a butteryfly's fart will change earth's axis by a little bit. It may not even be measurable for very small changes. But even with larger changes such as the earthquake that caused the Fukishima disaster a few years ago the question is: Does it matter? Probably not.
A minor point - I have been seeing for years from RUclipsr channels predict the dam is doomed. How many more years before it actually is? Is this a clickbait video?
Insufficient depth on quantity, size and depth of cracks. Same for areas with poor concrete. Repeated high water levels - no description for high - seasonal, volume, height. No reasonable explanation for the apparent buckling curve of the dam. Lots of other spin.
ARE THERE ANY REAL PICTURES OF THE DAM ? One picture shows it looking perfectly straight then I see another picture with it all about to fail, Does anybody know for sure or is this just another distraction ?

Yes exactly, I'm always wary of these disaster predictors when there is little factual backing. They may be right, but where are the papers and details showing the issues?
If the dam was a wise project or not is something that probably should be discussed in the distant future unless something drastic happens before then. A common assumption about large seemingly static projects like dams is that they are well, static. They are not. Dams are moving, bending. Even their concrete hasn't finally cured. That's a process which will go on for a very loong time. One could say the whole thing is alive. As the dam is moving, gaps are created and need to be sealed. That's normal ongoing maintenance for such a project. There are good things about the dam. There bad things. And there are plenty of bogus arguments.
Okay: engine ears 1. Water has been controlled by nature for billions of years follow the pattern 2. Build water energy silos to generate and counter/balance etc. 3. Steamboat blueprints but upgraded 4. The covert/bumper/aquaducts reassurance 5. Do you want the schematics
"It is in an earthquake zone." So is most of California. The relevant question is what are the frequency of earthquakes large enough to affect the dam, and the probability of one happening in the near future.
If you consider how many other infrastructure coverup failures ( collapsing foundations of buildings, roads, subways systems, horrible air quality) logic would say that's also with this damn. All of these project have one thing in common, poor safety inspections and risk management best practices.
Right, two points: in 2022 China still used coal for 61.3% of its electric generation without any significant CO2 scrubbers. And you did not account for the massive CO2 footprint of that volume of concrete used to make a dam that will fail.
The US have the twice the carbon footprint of China per capita. BOTTOMLINE! But they're not stopping there, they actually have a viable target of carbon neutrlity by 2060, and they don't just pay lip service to what they say unlike the US - they actuall do what they say. Concrete is actually inert, once used it doesn't contribute to any carbon emission. Your ignorance is all over the place. Because if it was actually there, it would be all over social media and the news. People have cameras, you know. What you saw in those satellite images are undoubtedly alignment errors where multiple satellite exposures - quite possibly taken at different angles compared to the ground as the satellite travels in its orbit while the earth spins beneath it - are stitched together to form a larger image, and the sub-images don't quite match up as they meet.
Apple Maps was full of this stuff back when the app first launched (and arguably for a number of years afterwards too.)

It's not gonna collapse at all. It is a truly massive structure, dozens upon dozens of meters of solid concrete. The problem is they CAUSE floods with it by mismanaging it in a truly criminal way - they fill it up all the way cause they are greedy, then a lot more water comes in and then they open up all the spillways releasing massive amounts of water all at once, which they do at night and without warning the millions of citizens of the several large metropolitan areas downstream. true CCP style.
it is not gonna collapse at all. it consists of dozens upon dozens of meters of concrete in horizontal direction and a dozen times that vertically. it is a vast, sheer immeasuraby heavy and vastly solid structure. the problem is they are continuously CAUSING floods with it by severely mismanaging it in a way that's nothing short of criminal: every time they fill up the reservoir (nearly) all the way cause they are greedy. then a lot more water comes in and they open up all the spillways all at once, preferably at night and without warning the millions of citizens that live in the several large metropolitan areas downstream. true CCP style.

You don't think they have not done that because you are ignorant of the system of dams.
