As a Canadian (who has a few glasses of wine in me) when she said the house was 400 years old..........I COULD NOT BELIEVE 🤯 the history that survives on that side of the pond is utterly astounding

This is actually the first comment I have ever posted on youtube and I am almost 30 but I felt so moved to address this so here I am. The reason that we don't see a "surviving history" of Canada and the US is because of the intentional genocide, assimilation, and erasure of Indigenous peoples (my ancestors, I belong to an interior "BC" Salish nation). Canada and the US became independent countries in the late 18th (US) and 19th (Canada) centuries (as we all know) but there is thousands of years of history and culture that was broken down and removed from western history by those colonial governments and societies. Indigenous peoples are fighting to survive currently and still face complete erasure despite being the first peoples of this continent. Evidence of this is unfortunately obvious from your comment (I am not criticizing you personally but remarking on how a Canadian could make such a comment without connecting this idea to the genocide of Indigenous peoples.) My only hope with this reply is to perhaps inspire people to question the history of Canada and the US and to ask themselves what their role is in acknowledging, preserving and uplifting the many nations of Indigenous peoples on this continent who have suffered so greatly for the countries colonizers enjoy living in today. (Also, specifically about "houses" and structures, many Indigenous peoples specifically designed structures for habitation to be impermanent and sustainable buildings that did not interfere with the natural landscape and ecosystems. So that is why for the most part we do not see remnants of buildings from many hundreds of years ago.) Please know this is not an issue of the past and that Indigenous peoples still deal with invisibility, misrepresentation, discrimination and racism in both government policy and society. All the best to yours and I appreciate anyone taking a moment to consider what I have shared.

@@luna_4273 I completely agree and thank you for summarizing it much more completely and beautifully than I could have! I had the pleasure of visiting a site of winter lodgings of the Thule people, ancestors of the Inuit, in Nunavut last year. Incredible structures of sod and whale bone that had survived a thousand years. I do so wish there were more surviving pieces of our incredible history; the tragic reality of why not much survived is something we all need to face more often......and be taught about WAY more thoroughly in school! I only learned the depth of it in my twenties and have even to this day only scratched the surface.

@@luna_4273 many people would be shocked that there weren't just a couple thousand natives here. There were millions. The Americas were just as populated as Europe and aisa at the time and had massive and advanced civilizations that possibly even exceeded that of many so called "civilized" European countries at the time. However disease wiped them out pretty severely. Same with the Buffalo and indigenous dog breeds which were also actively hunted out of existence.
But that wouldn't fit the "civilized" narrative so colonizers spent centuries ignoring it and/or covering it up.

You should re-jig the space under the stairs as a pull out pantry. This would allow you leave only the most necessary items in the working kitchen and free up cabinet space. Little to no money involved in that!

I love how much stuff in your home is second hand. I was following another RUclipsr but when they bought a house they filled it with furniture bought new, then they got a pet that they didn't adopt and I was done. I love that you have stayed so true to your values and presented yourself authentically rather than pretending to be sustainably minded when you really weren't like that other RUclipsr. Your home is BEAUTIFUL and you both should be very proud. Patience and hard work is obviously key to creating a gorgeous home filled with second hand, reclaimed, and upcycled items. Oh, and I also love that little old-fashioned cabinet you've got in your kitchen...SO FREAKING CUTE.

This is a beautiful renovation, the colours you've chosen are perfect for a dark, low ceilinged cottage with minimal windows. Turning the small bedroom upstairs into a family bathroom is a masterful move, definitely increases the house value, plus it's gorgeous. The fireplace downstairs is a showstopper, having the wood burning stove fitted gives you the best of an open fire and superb heating, your cottage must be toasty when it's lit. The kitchen is the most expensive room to upgrade. Definitely leave it to last. I adore the dresser you bought for extra storage, it fits the vibe of the cottage perfectly. I'd suggest you get a kitchen expert in to advise you on a style that will make the most of your room. They can help with securing second hand kitchens too. If you want a more industrial look, stainless steel manufacturers can make you a bench top with integrated sink, draining board and as high a back splash as you want, all in one piece. Have fun and take your time with your kitchen design, under cupboard lighting is a necessity!

Thank you for showing us round! Beautiful cottage. I actually think you’ve done quite a lot in the time and should be proud of that! Renovated most rooms, new windows, upgraded the flooring, new bathroom and removed the en-suite. Completely agree that some renovation channels just have the time to dedicate to making a renovation happen in a matter of months and it’s unrealistic if you have a full time job and want to spend the weekends seeing friends and family.
I think you’ve made it a much more usable space, but did you worry about losing the extra bedroom and an ensuite on what would happen to the property value? The end result looks amazing but I know a lot of people that shy away from doing things like that because of the potential loss in interest when reselling way into the future?

    • @MadeleineOlivia

Thank you! It really didn’t affect the value of the house. If anything it makes it more sale-able. We consulted with an estate agent before doing it! The size of the property and with its ceiling price it doesn’t change much because a four bed of this size isn’t necessarily needed. But a decent upstairs bathroom with a bath is much more desirable! If the house was of a bigger size/in a different location/detached then maybe but in our case it solved a problem more than anything.

It took longer than expected coz everyone was doing their garden and ran out of decking etc. But it’s practically there. No summerhouse yet as not available from screwfix yet due to covid I believe. Have to now wait till end of January for new window in bathroom before we modernise the bathroom. Need new window as it lets in cold air and gets very cold x. Excellent before and after house tour Madeleine and Alex. Both of you have certainly been working hard getting the finished result. I look forward to the spring and seeing what Madeleine are going to do in the garden.

Love how cosy everything looks. And I think it's perfectly fine and natural to take your time with renovations. We've lived in our apartment for 9 years and we still haven't finished quite everything, but that's fine. Does it bug me sometimes? Well yes, but I just remind myself there have been other priorities and that's ok ❤

The house is so stunning, it looks like it belongs in a magazine!
Definitely stealing some inspiration! My house here in the US also has low ceilings, which is so unusual here, and I'm also 6'ish, so have been figuring out how to make it work. Keeping it light coloured with an open layout and low profile furniture has helped so far!

You and Alex made the cottage look so beautiful but I could tell you were needing more space esp kitchen wise. Def understand why you didn't want to be on a road with pets. Can't wait to see what you guys do with your new home 🏡 x
