Sewing when I know how to use my machine is much more fun than trying to hand stitch ridiculous quantities of fabric (including faux fur) into a cloak on the floor at four am and crying-

I love how Rachel considers laying on top of fabric to be the weirdest thing she's ever done for the camera. I'm a seamstress and the only time I find sewing relaxing is when I'm following a trusted pattern I've made many times before and using a fabric that behaves as I want it to. You're performing actual miracles of creativity out of second-hand fabrics and with no how-to guide - of course it's quite a stressful endeavour!
Ahh yes, I feel you! Hobby seamstress here but especially some fabrics are just butt to work with. Now I am making a fifties dress out of cotton poplin and I'm like..zen. Even if it's stripey stuff, or maybe because it is haha. Nothing more fullfilling than getting those seams to pattern match. But yeah, sewing like.. chiffon, sucks. So pretty, but sucks. Gotta say I always get a little anxious to see Rachel never make a mockup (have weird shoulders and larger boob so usually have to do some pattern adjusting) and to leave her edges raw. Lol. But it works for her!
For me, sewing is using a tool to get to something I want - like pants that fit, or a costume or repairing a popped seam, or scout patches. But creating - thats the hard part, and Eva said it well, you are off the script, using the sewing machine but making it up as you go along and thats HARD. You are awesome. I love your bat costume!

Yup, when I was 4ish my grandmother and I got matching witch costumes and she had fun with it. But if you asked me at the time it wasn't a witch but a princess costume.

To be fair, I too was an overly serious child that thought having fun was foolish, but around middle school I realized real maturity was accepting that it’s ok to be childish and that being too serious will only stress you out. So there’s a good chance that child will change their mind in the future.

I cried for months about turning 12 because that meant I had to stop being a kid 😂 (as if I'd even allowed myself to be a kid before then anyway...) I finally learned how to be a child when I was 19 and moved out on my own, and since then I've been trying my best to get back all those childhood years I missed out on, which means most of my free time consists of lots of cartoon-watching, tea-parties, crafts and art projects, dressing up, and eating ice cream whenever I want. I'd argue it's even better to be a kid as an adult, since I can just buy all the glittery stickers and candy I want without having to beg my parents for them 😂😂

I think the too old to dress up thing is just part of that kids in a certain age reject all thing younger kids do and think they are too old for it now, and see childish as something bad. Then comes a time (usually one's 20s) when one realises there is no such thing as it being silly to do stuff you like and then one is not too old for anything anymore. For me, sewing is stressful if I have a deadline and have to somehow meet some achievement. But it is very relaxing and rewarding if one project is allowed to take 2 months and the only judgement that matters is my own.
I totally agree. I have a linen shirt I am making and it’s taking me three months. I would work on it and as soon as it became stressful I put it down. Has it taken a while -yes. Am I enjoying making it absolutely. Will it be awesome when completed and I wear it out everywhere 🥰 😘
I think the too old to dress up comment actually comes from the parents not wanting to bother with taking the kids out for Halloween. I am 64 years old and still love to dress up in costumes. My Mom never discouraged it and dressed up to take us out Trick or Treating. Why do people discourage that creativity? They seem to be the people who suck the fun out of everything.
@@reginafetty6374 I don't think it's just about parents don't wanting to take kids out for halloween, as I live in culture where halloween isn't really a thing, but still there are this age when most kids don't like dressing up for some years (for ither occations) and think it's just a thing for small kids. But yes, parents approach has a huge impact nontheless.
@@meamela9820 could be a bit of both, in the US it can be quite the ordeal to take kids out trick or treating, so certain parents try to end the tradition on the early side. I don’t really agree with that approach but taking the kids out involves a lot of time, possibly cost, effort, and energy. Especially if you live in a state like I do where it’s usually a downpour/wind storm during trick or treating. Who knows though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When you said “sewing SUCKS” … girl, I felt like I was looking into a mirror. I make all my cosplay costumes and even wearable clothes sometimes, so people are always surprised when I tell them I HATE sewing. It’s just that if you don’t make it, who will? Lol
It can be the same way with my quilts sometimes. Planning is fun and you want to get to the "good" part, but you realize there are many hours of hardwork, broken thread and wonky seems between you and it....

a little tip for smoothing out foam clay: use water on your fingers when smoothing/spray your sculpture with water before smoothing or mix foam clay with water to make a paste and smooth out your sculpture with that! I've made extremely smooth foam clay cosplay props before with that method [like smooth enough to reflect some light and look shiney looking when painted with glossy mod podge :)]
I’m definitely getting into the Halloween spirit! Put together my costume. I’m going as a cottagecore inspired sort of hedge witch (and by “going” I mean handing out sour patch kids to the neighborhood children). I knitted my own witch hat and am pairing it with a wonderful brown lacy and tiered vintage square dancing skirt I own, a black turtleneck, a tooled brown leather belt, black tights, and brown granny boots. I may also go find myself a rustic broom.
I want to be the Disney princess that gets dressed by bats instead of birds.... Also butterflies landing on me? Terrifying. Bat magical. I'm so jellybelly.

Yes! Stealthiness is games is terrifying. Or just enemies being behind me. Like Sonic Adventure 2 King Boom Boom still scares me but I happily watch Outlast videos and any horror game videos because I don't need to worry about being attacked. I realized I can't play horror games when I broke down crying in the first 5 minutes of dead space. I do appreciate them though.
Small moving tip (which you may already be aware of) For those of us who have an abundance of clothing [coughs…. coughs…… me, coughs]: DO NOT PACK ALL YOUR CLOTHES IN A BOX! Use as much as you can as packing material The end I did this when I had to move continents. Saves on bubble wrap, newspaper stains, etc…. Plus, you are not left with tons of packing material which you do not need after the move.
Home Depot sells moving boxes at most of their stores now ! Also make sure you get LOTS of tape to close boxes & MANY SHARPIES to write content on boxes - DO right it in several places ! Don't forget to get a new p.o. box & forward your mail to new abode - that can take some time - think they recommend 6 weeks. Also PLEASE update your Veterinary Office & your pets tags. On the day of your move, lock up your cat in the bathroom with food/water/litter it doesn't sneak out. Put a BIG WARNING on the door so if anyone uses bathroom they don't let cat out. Also, put your cat carrier in there First ! Maybe with a t-shirt you slept in inside. Your scent will reassure them. They may crawl into carrier as it's "safe", which can work out when it is time to actually move the cat! If your pet has a microchip - contact the company to change address...... Moving is a scary stressful time for pets & many get out & get lost..... If you can, fill a jug (or two) with water from "home" for the pets water at new place. Gradually add the 'new' water. Pets can get stomach upset if things change too fast. P.s. if you need boxes (say for books), Rachel, reach out to me. M-F we use LOTS of boxes, can set aside if you can pick up in Rockland ?!
Have a tub/box that is the last on the truck and first off that has all the essentials: toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, plates, sharpies, tool kit, cleaning supplies, bath towel, etc. And have an overnight bag with clothes and toiletries for the first couple of days. Setup your bed first! Then you always know that however much you get done you can climb into bed. We made color coded labels for each room that boxes were moving to (kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc). Then at the new place you can put a piece of coordinating construction paper to mark each room. This allows people helping you move to get boxes into the correct rooms. You can always use a sharpie on the box with more detailed contents if necessary.
Weird tip but before you move everything in make sure your flooring is ok- I moved all my stuff in only to realise the previous owners of my unit let their dog pee wherever it wanted 😭 It was a pain to clean up around all my furniture

this is AMAZING!! all of the details came together so brilliantly and i love seeing the sewing/making process as well :) if you’d like to wear this costume without having to constantly hold the ends of the wings, i’d recommend looking into how ballet dancers wear wings like this. their wings often attach to an elastic bracelet around their wrist or to an elastic ring around one of their fingers. you definitely don’t have to change anything, i just wanted share this random thing i know haha

As a bloke it seems I know my sewing machine better than some ladies but -- I struggled for 12 years with a car which, while normally reliable, refused to start after ultra-short journeys. Literally the week I got rid of the car I notice that the manual explained that this was a known problem, and here's how you operate the controls to fix it..

You could add elastic bands at the end of the wings(cape) so that you could put it on like a bracelet so you don’t have to hold the ends. Or even a small loop to wear as a ring if that makes sense
I knew about the side thread cutter on my sewing machine, but it was a monumental event when I found the automatic threader. And me jaw dropped when I discovered the removable part that allows you to sew cylindrical items easier!
I was used to my mom's 60's Kenmore sewing machine having the thread cutter in back... and boy oh boy did I miss it when I doscovered my 80's Singer from my grandmother did not have one, if Gorilla Glue had been a thing when I was still using it, I would have glued a seam ripper onto it back there somehow. But I will go read the manual for my own 70's Singer to see if it's got any interesting thngs, I found all kinds of neat stuff in the manual for my 1914 Jones hand crank machine, it has hemming foot attachments and stuff!
My Saturday morning ritual: make coffee in my cauldron cup, click on Rachel's video... This costume is so freaking amazing! Also, did you know that the groove between the nostrils on flying foxes is that when they munch on juicy fruit whilst hanging upside down, the juice will run down the little channel and drip onto the floor without it going into their nostrils. How adorable is that?!

Oooof, I am so sorry you didn't learn about that little knife until now. I just remembered how it was a part of the routine when we had sewing in school (It's part of scandinavian elementary school cirriculum, both sewing and carpentry) though there is still tons of things I'm only just learning now as an adult picking it up again. I finally learned how to be a child when I was 19 and moved out on my own, and since then I've been trying my best to get back all those childhood years I missed out on, which means most of my free time consists of lots of cartoon-watching, tea-parties, crafts and art projects, dressing up, and eating ice cream whenever I want. I'd argue it's even better to be a kid as an adult, since I can just buy all the glittery stickers and candy I want without having to beg my parents for them 😂😂

I think the too old to dress up thing is just part of that kids in a certain age reject all thing younger kids do and think they are too old for it now, and see childish as something bad. Then comes a time (usually one's 20s) when one realises there is no such thing as it being silly to do stuff you like and then one is not too old for anything anymore.
For me, sewing is stressful if I have a deadline and have to somehow meet some achievement. But it is very relaxing and rewarding if one project is allowed to take 2 months and the only judgement that matters is my own.
I totally agree. I have a linen shirt I am making and it’s taking me three months. I would work on it and as soon as it became stressful I put it down. Has it taken a while -yes. Am I enjoying making it absolutely. Will it be awesome when completed and I wear it out everywhere 🥰 😘
I think the too old to dress up comment actually comes from the parents not wanting to bother with taking the kids out for Halloween. I am 64 years old and still love to dress up in costumes. My Mom never discouraged it and dressed up to take us out Trick or Treating. Why do people discourage that creativity? They seem to be the people who suck the fun out of everything.

But yes, parents approach has a huge impact nontheless.
@@meamela9820 could be a bit of both, in the US it can be quite the ordeal to take kids out trick or treating, so certain parents try to end the tradition on the early side. I don’t really agree with that approach but taking the kids out involves a lot of time, possibly cost, effort, and energy. Especially if you live in a state like I do where it’s usually a downpour/wind storm during trick or treating. Who knows though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

a little tip for smoothing out foam clay: use water on your fingers when smoothing/spray your sculpture with water before smoothing or mix foam clay with water to make a paste and smooth out your sculpture with that! I've made extremely smooth foam clay cosplay props before with that method [like smooth enough to reflect some light and look shiney looking when painted with glossy mod podge :)]
I’m definitely getting into the Halloween spirit! Put together my costume. I’m going as a cottagecore inspired sort of hedge witch (and by “going” I mean handing out sour patch kids to the neighborhood children). I knitted my own witch hat and am pairing it with a wonderful brown lacy and tiered vintage square dancing skirt I own, a black turtleneck, a tooled brown leather belt, black tights, and brown granny boots. I may also go find myself a rustic broom.
A most treasured memory: a baby fruit bat landed on me, we made eye contact for a brief but magical moment before it flew away. I am truly blessed.
I want to be the Disney princess that gets dressed by bats instead of birds....

Yes! Stealthiness is games is terrifying. Or just enemies being behind me. Like Sonic Adventure 2 King Boom Boom still scares me but I happily watch Outlast videos and any horror game videos because I don't need to worry about being attacked.

Small moving tip (which you may already be aware of)
For those of us who have an abundance of clothing [coughs…. coughs…… me, coughs]:
DO NOT PACK ALL YOUR CLOTHES IN A BOX!
Use as much as you can as packing material

I did this when I had to move continents. Saves on bubble wrap, newspaper stains, etc…. Plus, you are not left with tons of packing material which you do not need after the move.
Home Depot sells moving boxes at most of their stores now ! Also make sure you get LOTS of tape to close boxes & MANY SHARPIES to write content on boxes - DO right it in several places !
Don't forget to get a new p.o. box & forward your mail to new abode - that can take some time - think they recommend 6 weeks.
Also PLEASE update your Veterinary Office & your pets tags. On the day of your move, lock up your cat in the bathroom with food/water/litter it doesn't sneak out. Put a BIG WARNING on the door so if anyone uses bathroom they don't let cat out. Also, put your cat carrier in there First ! Maybe with a t-shirt you slept in inside. Your scent will reassure them. They may crawl into carrier as it's "safe", which can work out when it is time to actually move the cat!
If your pet has a microchip - contact the company to change address......
Moving is a scary stressful time for pets & many get out & get lost.....
If you can, fill a jug (or two) with water from "home" for the pets water at new place. Gradually add the 'new' water. Pets can get stomach upset if things change too fast.
P.s. if you need boxes (say for books), Rachel, reach out to me. M-F we use LOTS of boxes, can set aside if you can pick up in Rockland ?!
Have a tub/box that is the last on the truck and first off that has all the essentials: toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, plates, sharpies, tool kit, cleaning supplies, bath towel, etc. And have an overnight bag with clothes and toiletries for the first couple of days.
Setup your bed first! Then you always know that however much you get done you can climb into bed.
We made color coded labels for each room that boxes were moving to (kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc). Then at the new place you can put a piece of coordinating construction paper to mark each room. This allows people helping you move to get boxes into the correct rooms. You can always use a sharpie on the box with more detailed contents if necessary.
Weird tip but before you move everything in make sure your flooring is ok- I moved all my stuff in only to realise the previous owners of my unit let their dog pee wherever it wanted 😭 It was a pain to clean up around all my furniture

if you’d like to wear this costume without having to constantly hold the ends of the wings, i’d recommend looking into how ballet dancers wear wings like this. their wings often attach to an elastic bracelet around their wrist or to an elastic ring around one of their fingers. you definitely don’t have to change anything, i just wanted share this random thing i know haha

Literally the week I got rid of the car I notice that the manual explained that this was a known problem, and here's how you operate the controls to fix it..

I was used to my mom's 60's Kenmore sewing machine having the thread cutter in back... and boy oh boy did I miss it when I doscovered my 80's Singer from my grandmother did not have one, if Gorilla Glue had been a thing when I was still using it, I would have glued a seam ripper onto it back there somehow. But I will go read the manual for my own 70's Singer to see if it's got any interesting thngs, I found all kinds of neat stuff in the manual for my 1914 Jones hand crank machine, it has hemming foot attachments and stuff!

Oooof, I am so sorry you didn't learn about that little knife until now. I just remembered how it was a part of the routine when we had sewing in school (It's part of scandinavian elementary school cirriculum, both sewing and carpentry) though there is still tons of things I'm only just learning now as an adult picking it up again.
