"What an amazing lie that was..." the way he delivers that line gets me every time, and so true to our history as well. In terms of animated television, Zuko's character writing is some of the best I've seen in terms of overall development, like god damn they did that shit perfectly. My favorite part of the Zuko/Ozai confrontation is Zuko bringing up how the rest of the world doesn't see the Fire Nation as a beacon of greatness, specifically stating that "They hate us, and we deserve it." I like to think it's Zuko and the writers calling back to Zuko Alone when Lee shouted "I hate you!" at Zuko after he used his firebending in front of him. I think it really shows how Zuko never forgot about Lee and demonstrates what he learned in that episode. Uncle Iroh is a legend for teaching Zuko how to redirect lightning, because if he didn't, Zuko would be a piece of fried honor...literally. Ozai had no idea Zuko could redirect it, hell, that the technique even existed. He was like "your mom is not here to prevent me from killing you this time" and Zuko was like "I'll do it myself". Even with the Sun was just barely peaking from the eclipse, Ozai was able to produce lightning so quickly and so powerful...insane.
While I can't wait to see Daniel Kim as Ozai, Mark Hamill's voice work really captures the authority, aggression, and unlimited power that the character represented.
@@michaelamostlyWell his voice is my most favorite sound. I’m so glad you are lucky enough to hear my most favorite sound. It’s hard to sleep when I can’t call him 😔
I am happy you decided to spend some time with ATLA fans by doing this series. I’ve been enjoying going back through it with everyone. Wishing you the best.
12:13 While Azula is capable of bending lightning, most of the time she is bending blue fire. Blue flames are hotter than yellow/orange and artistically speaking, they provide a nice contrast to other firebenders, especially during her Agni Kai with Zuko.
The Zuko/Ozai encounter still gives me chills. The chemistry both Dante and Mark have this episode is pure perfection. Still amazes me Mark Hamill was not only Luke Skywalker and Joker but Firelord Ozai too, the man is a legend.
Zuko telling Ozai that he's leaving in this episode was EPIC. My feelings for this episode are a jacked up mess, but it was very pivotal in completing the Gaang. Also, You should react to Korra after this, Ms. Melon Lord!
So with the whole lavabending, originally according to Avatar Extras in the Avatar State episode from Book 2, lavabending was considered a combination that only the Avatar could do, but this was rectified when Legend of Korra Book 3 came along when it became a rare sub-element of earthbending. Though it's more like waterbending since it's earth in a liquid state, requiring more fluid movements and allowing a more supple combat style. And you don't even need much earth to lavabend when Ghazan straight up created a lava shuriken from small rocks to escape! If watching Roku destroy a temple with lavabending or Kyoshi creating an island with lavabending wasn't enough, watching the animation when Ghazan does it is so intimidating and awesome. The guy who told them where the Fire Lord's chamber was at 5:01 was War Minister Qin, the same guy who forced the mechanist to work on military technology for the Fire Nation like the drill! Qin was voiced by Kristoff Tabori, who voiced HK-47, the assassin droid in the games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. I love that scene of Zuko confronting Ozai so much. I’ve never seen such a good example of calling out an abuser and saying definitively that what they did was cruel and wrong. He also showed his growth and understanding of the propaganda of the Fire Nation. Such a perfect scene.
I love how earthbending is like being a diet avatar. Want to waterbend? Use mud! Want to firebend? Use lava! Want to airbend? Use sand! Want to metalbend? Bend freaking metal!
That moment when you realize Sozin was just casually attempting to straight up unalive Zuko with that lightning blast because he didn't expect him to be able to redirect it back.... Dude is just racking up the "Father of the Year" points....
Lavabending is an earthbending sub-skill since magma is molten rock. In Legend of Korra, *Bolin* and *Ghazan* were the only _Earthbenders_ to lavabend while everyone else were metalbenders. Szeto and Roku were firebending avatars who used lavabending _after_ they mastered earthbending. Kyoshi also lavabended when she separated her island from the mainland
I look forward to these videos so much! ❤ thank you so much for doing these! The tea descriptions, rewatching the series, your wholesome personality... such a great gem!
@13:35 It's funny that you mentioned Perry the Platypus, because Dee voices him too. I've always assumed his work with Momo was part of the reason he got that role on Phineas and Ferb.
Ill never forget one christmad my grandma got me the entire book 3 episode set on dvd and i was so excited to get them I literally counted fown the days and then the night i got it i watched the entire book 3 in one night, such wonderful memories i miss my granny but i love this show so much it helped mw through so much and honestly helps me connect to my faith alot easier
3:32 My assumption about why a lot of firebenders live near volcanoes/places with magma despite not being able to bend it is that they’re able to use the heat to help enhance their firebending. I figured that, in order for firebenders to actually make their own fire, their body heat must be involved somehow.
Thoroughly enjoy this series. Binged it until yesterday when I caught up to real time. Love seeing the evolution of the presentation from the first episode until now. MJM is doing a fantastic job with this and the format/premise is great. Tea Cozy is killing it with this as marketing, I'm sure.
I'm not much of a tea drinker, more "hot leaf juice" as Uncle Iroh would say, though i prefer iced tea. however, a black tea with caramel sounds absolutely wonderful. i'd love to give it a try sometime. It seems really fitting for the episode, which as far as the episode goes, i really enjoy it, though it's not my favorite. it's not bad or anything, just i dunno, really disappointing in how and why they failed. but it does a great job of setting up later episodes.
I love you guys together. I would love to see you both as characters in a Star Wars animated role. There are multiple characters I can create in my imagination just based off of your chemestry. Sprinkle in some Filoni magic... BOOM!!!
17:03 talking about things from childhood that don't age well: I watched a Disney movie with my niece and nephew a while back and kept asking myself what I liked about it besides one little side villian.
Not gonna lie this Ben had a sultry voice lol also some people seem to forget that the only ones that heard about the invasion plan were Azula,Ty Lee, and Mai they only thing they found out was that they were impersonating the kyoshi warriors not that they heard about invasion plan from the earth king.
@@loftyguy11 That's what I mean they only knew about the impersanation I think the earth king failed to mention that he accidentally revealed the invasion plan to them.
I was so proud of Zuko when he finally stood up to his father and started his redemption arc. And I never even thought about it but Ozai is basically Luke Skywalker if he turned to the dark side 😂😂😂
Random fun fact and theory: the fun fact is that, the physical reaction that Toph can sense when people lie is caused by the subconscious fear of the lie being discovered, this has led people to theorize that the reason Toph couldn't tell that Azula was lying when she did the whole "400 foot tall purple platypus bear" shtick is because the lie was so preposterous that no one would ever believe it to begin with, so there'd be no fear of being discovered.
Great episode. The twist and turns are very interesting throughout, but it’s still sad knowing the invasion was always destined to fail. Seeing Zuko finally stand up to his father and finally finding his own path is always great, and feels natural after 50 episodes of buildup. The ending is kind of bleak, but seeing Zuko turn good gives us enough hope that everything will turn out alright.
Guys, let's make a bet. How many times will Michaela mistake Azula's blue fire with lightning? I say four times at least 😂 (Sorry Michaela, we love you, you're awesome ❤)
Lavabending has to stem from someone born of one Earthbending parent and one Firebending parent. Primary examples are both Ghazan and Bolin from The Legend of Korra

Zuko's "calling the old man out" speech in this ep is one of my favorite moments in the entire series. (Not my _favorite,_ that's coming in a later episode)
we need Dante as guest for the next episode. "Hello, Zuko here"
If she could get Dante as a guest, he would need to open with "Hello, I'm nchammer23," to mirror what happened last episode.
Glad I'm not the only one, he was fun.
I was hoping the whole cast for the finale
Agreed
YES!!! Dante would be the perfect guest!
You should absolutely bring Dante as a guest! I need him to say “ That’s Rough Buddy “

Thus begins Zuko's Redemption Arc, long-awaited, but so worth it, especially leading to the end of the series.
I mean technically his redemption arc started in book 2 but had a relapse at the end but started again by mid book 3.
