I rewatched ATLA for the first time in a decade recently and the Last Agni Kai hit me harder than Aang defeating Ozai. Zuko went through so much to get there and the final culmination of all that struggle is beautifully done. The music, the visuals, the voice acting - all of it is perfect.
@@nikgokuhil that's what I'm saying. Ozai raised her to be like him. Ozai has no friends, only pawns. Azula was on the way there. A real friend would consider their friends feelings, not toss them in a cell.
@@chunkydillpepper Ok? What they had on paper was a friendship, Azula never really treated them like that. Never did I say it wasn't a friendship, its just that Azula sees her friends as HER friends. Once they do anything Azula dislikes, they wouldn't be friends. Like when Mai helped Zuko escape.
This one is great. Seeing Azula’s mental breakdown is scary and enthralling at the same time, but the final Agni Kai is also awesome for both Zuko and Azula’s characters. Seeing Aang finally confront Ozai is also super satisfying after the entire series of buildup. Excited for the end.
Ozai took his shirt off because he considers the fight a direct challenge to his authority and thus an Agni Kai. If you recall his duel with Zuko when he burned his face, he also fought with no shirt or shoes then too.
The Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula was extremely beautiful to see. Both characters really showing off how strong they are at Firebending and at the end it looked like Zuko was the true victor as even being able to tell through the mindset of both characters. Azula was going through a whole breakdown both mentally and physically with her hair style, you notice throughout the Agni Kai between her and Zuko she looked surprised to see Zuko being able to keep up with her eventually getting knocked down by Zuko. Meanwhile Zuko was in perfect mind, more confident, calm, and collected growing past the rage he had before at the start of the series even sacrificing himself for Katara when Azula uses her lightning on Katara.
This episode and Part 4 were initially conceived as a singular episode but the creators realized that they could not fit the story they wanted into just one episode, and instead decided to do it as a four-parter instead of as a three-parter. Iroh's firebending here was more powerful than the drill to break through the wall...let that sink in. Dude is mad powerful. It visually calls back to Iroh's first teachings to Zuko that "Firebending comes from the breath, not the muscles". This shows that Iroh became who he was by never compromising on the fundamentals of Firebending, and by fighting for something he actually believed in. And Jeong Jeong incorporated waterbending techniques into his firebending! Exactly what Iroh taught Zuko as well! I like how when Aang is redirecting lightning, Ozai is so surprised, because he realizes this is the same thing Zuko did and what he said about helping the avatar was true as Aang must've learned it from him. I've always thought that Toph's line, "Thats a lot of fire, isn't it?" was one of the coolest. We don't see Toph vulnerable or awed very much, so when she was actually looking down, and feeling the heat from that distance, it gives it a sense that, yeah, the earth kingdom would actually be destroyed by this. It gives a great sense of weight and meaning.
Michaela: "I did a little voice work on Avatar." Danny: "Oh as who?" Michaela: "Toph Beifong" Me: "I don't think you realize what small voice work means, Michaela. Toph is like, one of the main characters." 🤣
The Fire Lord's throne room looks much more intimidating with Azula's blue fire! It's not electricity, it's her own firebending since it's blue while the fire when Ozai was in the throne room was orange. The birthday thing on the airship gets better when you know that the voices of Qin Lee and the engineer are DiMartino and Konietzko respectively! The cherry pit scene is even better when you know the servant was, just like Azula, voiced by Grey DeLisle. In other words, the "Trust nobody, not even yourself" meme. But knowing this fact is also hidden symbolism, that Azula lost herself! And exactly, ATLA was planned to have three seasons from the very beginning and Nick greenlit them all at once, it wasn't like Legend of Korra where it was one season at a time and the creators didn't know if Nick would greenlight another one. The music and sound design for Zuko and Azula's Agni Kai drew inspiration from Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner, particularly in pairing the slow tempo and melancholy mood with an intense action scene and filtering down the sound of the fire effects in favor of the score. The music really does take the front state. The fire is muffled or nonexistent, just two siblings fighting to essentially the death. I also love Zuko's use of the different bending techniques and how this agni kai is far different from their first encounter. The roles are swapped. Zuko's levelheaded and in control while Azula lets her rage get the best of her. This is the greatest animation of all time. Avatar is as close to perfect as a show can get. The brutality of two children prepared to kill each other, siblings, is just too good for a Nicktoon. It was heartbreaking. And the mental break of Azula when she lost, mixed with this piece, is so shocking to see on a Nick show. A fourteen-year-old girl was destroyed mentally by pressure. She was psychotic, cruel, lacked a conscience, apathetic, but was intelligent, cunning, precise, and strong. The character arc of Azula is too great to comprehend.
The last Agni Kai is always jaw dropping. The cinematics, the music, the visuals, the fact that’s it’s just instrumental. Everything is just so stunning and comes together so beautifully
As Zutara stan for years, i confirmed that it was crazy to see her end with aang instead of Zuko 😂 We were robbed! Also, Katara isn't too gentle lol By the end of the show, she was the most ruthless of the gaang. Zuko knew that more than anyone else since the Southern Raiders episode.
I promise that it was always this big for a lot of us. Glad you can gain from rewatching yourself. The creators/writers created something truly beautiful and culturally significant to a generation.
To be fair it IS possible that Ozai realized that Zoku taught Aang, because Zuko actually redirects Ozai's lightning before he leaves. So it IS a possibility, OR maybe he's just think "OMG HIM TOO!? First Iroh, then Zoku; now the avatar!!??"
The best episode of the show imo and one of my all-time favorite eps. The culmination of Azula's deteriorating mental state is so compelling, the final Agni Kai between her and Zuko is the best fight in the show, the White Lotus storming Ba Sing Se/Toph, Suki, and Sokka raiding airships is epic, as well as the early Aang vs Ozai fight (which doesn't have the weird energy-bending or pointy rock stuff in the last episode).
Idk if you don’t know or just didn’t say but toph shooting sokka and suki to the airship is one of my top 10 moments. It shows how she constantly is aware of her surroundings. She didn’t need to hear Soka answer cause he pointed to it before saying anything and she could feel it.
To me it has always felt like ATLA was a stand out phenomenal show, growing up with this as i was a young teenager, and rewatching with DVDs ever since. I'm so excited woth the advent of Netflix picking it up that there are so many new and bolder fans among the internet, feels so great to share all this love for something so dear to SOOO many people!
20:28 Ozai: "This is the second time my lightning has been redirected at me in the last month. Which, you know... Isn't a lot. But it's weird it's happened twice."
The one time Azula had red fire was a flashback of them showing their grandfather (the current firelord in the flashback) firebending demonstrations. It was never explicitly said when she got the blue fire, but it seems she never used red after gaining the ability.
I think it’s cool that Azula’s firebending is blue because the science behind it is cool (or hot) - a blue flame is hotter than a red flame and it shows her very fiery nature
Ms. Murphy/🌸, it’s been such a delight watching your reactions and review this season. As a huge ATLA and tea fan, “Tea Time With Toph” was appreciated content for me, as just about the time you started this my father went into hospice and then passed a few weeks ago. This channel was a relief and small joy during some stressful days that helped me take a moment for myself to have a cup of tea and not feel so alone. You’re a lovely and multi-talented person, and I look forward to what you have in store for us in the near future. I wish for you moving forward a semi-pink aura (cause no one, not even Ty Lee can have it pink all the time). 💓🙏
Great guest you had on! Very passionate about the show! There was a lot to talk about with this episode and I'm glad that you talked about it. I'm curious if Mike or Brian would be the final guest in the last episode. Regardless, well done on being very consistent with these uploads! Will miss seeing these pop up in my Subscriptions and RUclips Shorts feed.
you were so real at the end and I totally relate to that kind of upbringing and ironically that's how Toph felt. but super excited to see what non ATLA stuff you do as well.
I know there's still one more part to go, but I just want to thank you for this rewatch series. I know it's been time consuming to get the episodes out, but they've been so enjoyable to those of us that grew up with this show. And an unrelated side note: we're the same age, Michaela! So I can relate to you haha.
Still feel like the show lacked the time to devellop her fall in madness. (Like showing her refusing the help of mai and ty lee during the day of black sun out of paranoia for ex) As is, it felt a bit forced of a transition. It almost happen in a single episode with little foreshadowing. But it s part of the limits the show had (short episodes and limited in numbers)
Man future generations, will never understand watching this episode live was like. 💯I remember watching this with my cousins at my house, and never quiet understanding everything that was happening but seeing my cousins go crazy and then me going crazy as well. Bro, it was a feeling that just sticks with you. Man, Mike and Bryan are freaking genius for this show!!!
I love how Toph just launches them before Sokka stops telling her where the closest airship is. She can sense where he is pointing and then just sends it.
19:28 My sister told me that the reason why Azula’s fire is blue and not red is because she’s more crazy than Zuko. The more intense you are, the hotter your fire burns, and blue flames burns hotter than red flames. In Season Two, Episode Eight “The Chase” Azula sets a building on fire, when she traps Aang, and the fire becomes red/orange as it cools down.
I can't believe life got in the way for me to enjoy Tea Time With Toph as it aired like I've done previous days, but here I am and I'm watching these before finally sitting down for the Netflix Live action show!
This was so great and I’m kind of sad that it’s almost over soon. I’ve loved all of the guest reactors you’ve had on this series, but I have to say, Danny is probably my favorite. He’s so engaging and such a fantastic listener. He can really carry the conversations well. You both have such fantastic chemistry!
22:58 NO! Zuko should've ended up with jin! Even tho zuko ended up dating mai, I'm still a zuko x jin shipper! I'M GONNA MISS THIS SO MUCH! Seeing you react to your own show and be really positive always makes my day! 🥹
Hopefully you still do videos after this it was awesome going through this with you it was so cool and seeing so many tht made my childhood makes this awesome
Azula only trusts people because she knows they fear her or respects her by seeing how strong she is (like Ozai). Mai and Ty Lee broke out of it, and then her father left her alone to just take a job. She cannot even be right beside him during the comet. These two incidents made her question herself, and that she cannot trust anyone, because she realized her hold on people is not working anymore.
i love this show. I'm glad it's stil being talked about and is out there. Even though there are a lot of great things. Still has a special place in my heart. It's aged well
You can really see how Azula’s upbringing really brought upon her downfall. Her own mother thought she was a monster, and she loved zuko so much more, so she sought her father’s favour, since young she was competing with zuko to be loved. When Ozai left without her, she said “you can’t treat me like zuko!” She fears being unloved cuz she saw how her father treated zuko so being zuko = being unloved. Then her “friends” betrayed her for zuko the very person she was jealous of deep down.
There is a video here on youtube about a change that could be made to ATLA, where Zuko's fire in the Agni Kai becomes rainbow like the fire of the dragons in their test. Worth the watch
One thing to take in is Azulas flame isnt blue because shes evil. Her emotions are pure, and her skill is on another level. Shes broken, and sad about it. Her mother never loved her like Zuko, and she knows it. It would make a child grow up...angry....
Ok, So, Toph was the first postive disabled female hero I ever saw on screen and as a disabled person that’s so freaking important and that’s why I love her so freaking much.
I saw an edit that showed Zuko firebending the fire that came from the Dragons. So it was the colorful Dragonfire he was bending, and I think it would've been more fitting because, like you said, Zuko is very calm, collected, and in control of his anger and passion with his firebending. I also saw another edit that showed all the times, including in the Agni Kai against Azula, that Zuko used other bending forms throughout the show in his firebending. So using waterbending and earthbending styles and stances while firebending, showing that you don't have to be the Avatar to use the other elements. Such an excellent show with great details that still hold up today.
5:35 Toph launched them before Sokka finished talking bc her feet saw him pointing in the direction of the airship. I just think that’s a rly cool detail
The Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula is the most visual eye candy I have ever watched! By far the best battle sequence out of every battle scene in any movie or show! Also really enjoyed Danny as a guest! I think he might be my favorite non-costar guest you've had on here!
Hearing someone I’m starstruck with (Michaela) talk about getting star struck and other stars getting starstruck is a lot to take in 😵💫😲 everybody can always think someone is more important!!!
The terrifying scenrio was hilarious😂 these guys have never seen metal bending before never knew it existed and then all of a sudden this little girl "becomes" the door😂 had me dying
28:32 One of my good friends comes from a very similar background and has been figuring out the same exact things you mentioned here. It's hard at times hearing that much doubt and hesitation coming from such an amazing person, but it makes it that much more impactful watching them come into their own. I know pursuing art and creative works have and will continue to come with a lot of rejection. But from what little I can attest to from my little parasocial perspective, the Michaela we got to know through this series is pretty great. Just hold onto and cherish the parts you love most about yourself, and the right people will gravitate towards that.
Another beautiful shiny shirt! June is awesome as a strong self assured woman. The pain of age that was shown at the end was so endearing. I feel that hard. I wish I could create. Share beauty and emotions. Sharing experiences draws people together.
Michaela I’ve been watching Avatar ever since it aired when i was only 8 years old. I’m not even exaggerating when I say this show has shaped me into the person who I am today.
Ironically with the childhood poses I was probably closest to the Azula moments especially some of the crazy Azula ones because I actively couldn't tell where my body was half the time as a young child so I often looked really off balance (and still do sometimes) and I have a potent death glare (also ever since I first watched the show I've found myself doing the Azula bending fingers quite frequently which probably stemmed from the fact I'd often pretend to be Azula or a character similar to her when I'd play bending with my younger brother)
Between obnoxiously enhanced firebending and the exertion of a fight, one would get very hot. I imagine the shedding of the extra clothes might have simply been Ozai attempting to avoid heat stroke.
8:52 I never thought about that, but it's so true! Also I cannot help but notice how unhappy Azula was during most of this episode. Coming to think, also during most of the series. That girl was just miserable all the time! 😥
Shoot, was working as an assistant at a photoshoot in Toronto… was taking photos of some guy named Jack, all good, photos taken, thanks bye. Look through sheet that had names, saw after, Jack DeSena…. AHHHHHHHH, ran back to actually retroactively fan hard and get photo with.
The visual storytelling in this episode is just incredible. The Final Agni Kai is stunningly beautiful, but I also love how Zuke and Azula have swapped places in their movements compared to where they were when they first introduced in the series. Where Azula used to be solid, fast, sharp, striking with meticulously calculated precision, here she moves as if she's a marionette whose strings have been cut. In contrast, Zuko, who used to be wild and unfocused in his bending, is now solid, grounded, and intelligently deliberate. This whole fight is an inverted mirror image of their first fight in the series, on the deck of Azula's ship in s2 ep1, where Azula played Zuko like a fiddle and used his own compromised mental state to practically literally wipe the deck with him. Now Zuko has finally mastered the basics of foundation and footwork Iroh told him to pay attention to during his Agni Kai against Zhou back in season 1. Zuko finally has control over himself, his bending, and his life, right at the moment when the illusion of control over those things that Azula had shatters like her mirror and leaves her listless and defeated. The whole thing is just... [*chef's kiss*]
The final agni kai bring chills just thinking about it. The visuals, the character stuff you talked about, the somber (as opposed to action) music all comes together to as near perfect a scene as i can imagine. And to think this is just one of many near perfect scenes in this show!
It only takes a single note of The Last Agni Kai for me to cry

These two incidents made her question herself, and that she cannot trust anyone, because she realized her hold on people is not working anymore.
Can’t believe it is almost over! Can’t wait until we find out what is next that is an amazing way to meet someone as well
i love this show.
I love that a full orchestra was used for the finale. Makes these episodes hit so hard. ❤
The only times we've ever seen Azula bend regular red/orange fire was in flashbacks before their mom disappeared.
I'm from Germany but Idk why but this episode has such a cool name in both languages. 'Into the Inferno' is so fitting !
There is a video here on youtube about a change that could be made to ATLA, where Zuko's fire in the Agni Kai becomes rainbow like the fire of the dragons in their test. Worth the watch
I feel so bad for Azula bro. She didn’t have an Uncle Iroh to save her
😢
No way you got danny on this😂 thats dope just a regular avatar fan. I just got done laughing hysterically at his bending tier list
The way that it is actually a real disability, but shes also extremely capable. 😘👌
He interviewed you on the sly. Nice. You two were hilarious, excellent choice for the penultimate episode of the series!
I never thought that michaela going "Tea time with togh" would be one of my favorite things.
Danny! A face I'm always pleased to see! What a pleasant surprise! Hahaha
Preach... Midwest Perfect and how it only makes you crazy!
As a long time Zutara fam, hearing the voice of Toph proclaiming that she can't see how Aang measures up made moe practically choke on my oatmeal.
Kataang is the best toph VA say,
Zutara is good this is wrong but except that she never say she hate kataang she likes kataang
You can keep reacting , we love it
Danny!!! He is so much chiller here.
I knew she was waiting to have Danny on for this episode!
5:26 I always thought Constant Comment was a made up tea flavor like Liver Disaster. 😂
Or the cocktail Grounds For Divorce.
Your makeup looks so good, I love your blush!!!!
This is a crossover i never expected...🤯
Another beautiful shiny shirt! June is awesome as a strong self assured woman. The pain of age that was shown at the end was so endearing. I feel that hard. I wish I could create. Share beauty and emotions. Sharing experiences draws people together.
First time seeing this channel. I am glad to see the episode was watched by June truthers. I am still waiting for the June show to happen.
man i love azula's arc
I love this dudes channel elite choice in guest!
This is an amazing reaction I didn't know I needed..
God the Choreography
5:34 I feel like Toph could see where he was looking and pointing and went from there.
She's so beautiful ❤❤❤
19:02 Wow! That was spot on! Grey Delisle has to watch out
😂😮😢❤❤❤ that’s how I feel watching you and your friends reaction. reacting to this episode 😅
I’m going to miss this ❤ great show!
9:18 Totally missed opportunity for you and Danny to point at each other. 😂
Between obnoxiously enhanced firebending and the exertion of a fight, one would get very hot. I imagine the shedding of the extra clothes might have simply been Ozai attempting to avoid heat stroke.
No....its because he's about to fight
Its in his culture to take off shirts before dueling someone
8:52 I never thought about that, but it's so true! Also I cannot help but notice how unhappy Azula was during most of this episode. Coming to think, also during most of the series. That girl was just miserable all the time! 😥
Look at this young Eric Bana geeking about Avatar! 😅
I’m going to miss these videos
My favorite bender and my favorite content creator. Together reacting to ATLA?!?! Yes please!
13:45 less clothing you have the less restricted your body movements are, allowing you to fight at your full potential...
even though you werent in it, i would love to see you react to Legend of Korra and bring in some of their cast members as well
Toph and Iroh are my two favorite characters. I love all the characters so much but you and Mako (and Greg) the most. 🔥💨🌊🪨💚
