One great aspect of the is they are weird and unusual enough to make a perfect weekend car, it also reliable enough to need very little looking after which is perfect if you’ve got kids and little free time. Had mine for 12 years now and there’s nothing I can afford that I’d rather have.
I've owned one for over 10 years now and I agree with pretty much everything you said, including the S50>S54 part (one thing you didn't mention: the S50 still uses a good old throttle cable. Also, S50s have less rod bearing issues)
Only downsides is getting S50s tuned since it's pre OBD and the VANOS is prone to issues which ruined a lot of review results. An S50B32 in Good Shape is pretty much as capable as an S54.

Nice positive review. Very good condition for an old car. The engine sound is beautiful
My favorite is the US S52. Cheap to maintain, part are abundant, ultra smooth transmission and I can afford it. 🙃
