  • Perspective Shifts are powerful! Experiencing a home with less stuff will inspire you to declutter and change your thoughts on what you actually need to keep in your home. So living in a vacation rental is a great opportunity to rethink your relationship with stuff. It always inspires me to declutter when I get home!

    A long time ago, I eliminated a pile by the wall in my bedroom. Then every time I walked past the empty space, it felt wrong... until I went and stayed in a hotel for a weekend, where there are no piles anywhere. When I got home, the empty space felt right.

      I totally get this feeling. I am not a minimalist, lol, and while I can appreciate blank space elsewhere, it just doesn't feel "home-y" to me. I get around this by putting something *else* where the pile/box/whatever was (assuming there's room) so the pile can't come back. The key is to avoid any decorative furniture or flat surface that could invite new clutter and keep it simple. For example, in one place I put my guitar stand, in others I hung a mirror/artwork/photo. I would LOVE to be able to put a large houseplant in one of those spots, if my pets (or my attention span) would actually allow one to live. 😆 With this method, I still get used to seeing a simpler, cleaner space than I had before, but also give pride of place to something else I already had, giving it a little more room to breathe, without adding more stuff that needs to be managed.

    For two years, I was on work travel. I would be gone for 2 weeks at a time with 5 days at home in between and 2 travel days. This was when I had an awakening. I literally lived out of one suitcase that was transported back and forth. I was able to leave my safety boots at the site, but that was it. Amazingly, I packed the same weeks worth of clothing every time (and used the laundry at the site each week). It was eye opening! Since then, I am definitely a minimalist when it comes to clothing and furniture. The hotel room had a refrigerator, coffee pot and a microwave. Even though I had a food per diem, restaurant food gets old quickly. It is amazing what can be cooked with a microwave and a coffee pot (as a steamer- I am not a Coffee drinker), and a collective grill. An instant pot would have been phenomenal!

    Love this video!! I have been decluttering my house. I started with my closet. When I picked up a piece of clothing I would ask myself is this vacation worthy?!!? I got rid of 6 bags of clothing!!! So this video speaks to me!!! Love it!!

    This is a great way to “start over” with your stuff. I went on a vacation out of state and then moved and then went on a trip right after I moved and that was a very impactful perspective changer for me. Now unpacking I can see how much I don’t need everyday and how much more peace I have keeping my favorites.

    Yes. I used to enjoy vacation rentals because they were so minimalistic but I didn’t know how to do that in my house. I’m your textbook case for your first book. I started small and now my friends think I’m a minimalist but I’m really not. I just have what I can manage and I’m continually decluttering. My grandson said my house was “pristine” when he came for a visit. It really isn’t pristine, it’s just got way less stuff in it. Thanks for another great video.

    The biggest perspective shift that helped me with decluttering and also cleaning my house was learning about Executive Functioning skills, or my lack thereof. Instead of the negative self talk that I'm "lazy" or whatever, I recognized that I have issues with Task Initiation and Time Management. They are just brain/life skills that I need to develop by finding strategies that work for me. Setting a timer tackled both issues. If I tell myself that I only have to do a given task for 10 minutes, then it's so much easier to get going and it also pushes me to really focus on accomplishing as much as possible in that timeframe. Your method of not making a bigger mess than when you started really plays into this because of course I'm not going to get a whole room decluttered, organized, and cleaned to perfection in a small chunk of time but I can certainly make a spot better. I'm usually adequately motivated to keep going at that point but I don't feel any shame if I allow myself a break and come back to it later.

    • @suzum5689
      @suzum5689 3 года назад

      Experiencing no shame or failure is HUGE. I actually apply that to exercise. Commit to just 10 minutes of cardio each day, which is easy. Then, you're done and you've completed a goal. BUT, you may continue longer, if you are so inclined.

    We recently moved. I kinda view this new home as a vacation home. We brought only our beds, a few entertainment items, clothes (which I had already paired down prior to the move) and cooking/eating essentials. We have been here for almost a month and I'm ecstatic. I make a list of the things that I miss and then get them out as I need them. It is so much easier to clean and I've realized that I can live with so much less.

    I'm aiming for, and gradually getting closer to, this position in my home. I've always found it hard to get rid of things, but over this past 18 months, I've got rid of so much stuff...slowly and steadily. The house used to take a couple of days to clean and tidy before we could have visitors over. We can pretty much get it visitor ready in half a day now. Still not finished with the decluttering. Your videos really help me Dana. Thanks.

    Hi 👋🏼 I’m following you from Sweden in my decluttering process. I easily get discouraged from al organising videos in already perfectly clean houses so I just want to thank you for your down to earth, authentic and everyday “normal” content! Now to your question about vacation rentals: for a couple off years I have noticed that living was easier on vacation but I didn’t connect that feeling with owning less stuff…🙄 I’m a single mom of 5 (3 adults and 2 who already moved out) and vacation has always been the only time I felt in control of my and the kids possessions. Now I’m intentional about simplifying our apartment for a more substantial everyday life. (Hope my English is understandable 😁)

    One of my biggest decluttering issues are creative items! For example I like to quilt so fabric (even tiny pieces) all hold value to me. Being creative means it ALL has POTENTIAL. I have a TON of projects and am realizing that the ones I'm not all that interested in are getting in the way of doing the ones I really do want to do. Now as I'm sorting I try to rate the projects and if they don't rate say a 7 (min.) or above I donate them.
    I've also found a quote online I ask myself "Is this adding value to my life?". I ask myself this as I go through items.
    I have some big items I'm tossing, but covid is making it hard to get someone out to haul them.

    • @pluckyheroine9482
      @pluckyheroine9482 3 года назад +1

      @Shannon Brown - Same here and I spent several days going through fabric, notions, patterns and planned projects. I like your rating system of 7 or above for the items to keep. If I used a system like that, then the process might have gone faster. Instead, I asked myself What is the likelihood that I am going to make or use X,Y or Z in the next year? I ended up donating qty 4 72 qt bins recently. I now have 2 bins for dressmaking, 1 bin for holiday fabric, 1 bin of unwashed quilting fabric/fat quarters/charm squares, 1 bin of washed pieces.
      Maybe there are charity shops in your area that will pick up your items if they are left outside.
      Best wishes and happy crafting.

    • @shannonbrown7488
      @shannonbrown7488 3 года назад +3

      @@pluckyheroine9482 I have not had an issue getting rid of little items, just the big items that need to be hauled, like old TV's.
      My quilt guild takes fabric to make charity quilts so that helped. It's easier to get rid of something if you know it will be used for a good cause.
      Some craft stuff I sorted and got rid of according to how difficult/ expensive it is, or was to acquire, such as hand dyed wool yarn vs. cheap red heart acrylic. I knew the cheap stuff was not hard to acquire so when faced with a choice I got rid of it.
      I'm not done yet but still working hard at it!

      I have had a serious fabric problem in the past. So many projects I *could* do... And then I slowly came to understand "my fantasy self' and slowly came to realize that I didn't do done of them bc they were not priority enough. And finally I let them go. Did *I* want to do it or was that a 'fantasy self' vision?

    Another perspective shift is this: a Part of my town in Germany was flooded recently. A friend of Mine and me ALWAYS talked about how to declutter and minimize and be comfortable and Work with limits, buy less and so on... NOW there has been a shift in perspective because I am constantly reminded that this actually happened almost in Front of my own Home... Not somewhere Else and still be horrible, but right Here!!! And suddenly it took me a Couple of hours, days to declutter More than 60% of my already decluttered Home because I feel fortunate to not have been hit THIS Time! I digitalised documents, Pictures, sentimentals and so on... Just in Case this comes Back around... And at the end of the day I realise that it is ALL just STUFF and can be replaced or lived without... Of course I or we still have stuff, but my Kids won't get any presents anymore Other than collecting time and memories with each Other! I have ONE bag that I will hopefully have the Chance to Grab and still this is just STUFF. But the important ones that Sometimes cannot be replaced.. #stillinshock
    I love your idea by the way because we don't need that much.. a vacation suitcase is Sometimes all you get... If you're lucky❤️ stayhealthy

So if it brings you joy, use it! Love it! And if it's just a convenience, perhaps start winnowing with that. I'm packing for a few days away now in a situation unlike my normal living situation. Despite seeing my spare room at 5 foot high of stuff, the inspector for mice & bugs told the landlord he wasn't worried about my place because it was immaculate. I felt so proud. Before he came in, I told him I have a bad back so I'm unable to have everything clean, that I can only have things at waist level clean all the time. I think that even though I was embarrassed by all the dust and dust bunnies, it was the lack of clutter that made all the difference, except for the "bad" room. He thought it was funny I called my spare room the "bad" room.

I can tell how much my perspective has shifted because we just stayed on a vacation rental that was very small, and all I kept thinking was "there's too much stuff in here" like random tables and footstools and decorations that are supposed to make it feel cozy, but just made me feel claustrophobic.

    After coming home from our vacation (in a rental cabin) this summer, I decided that I wanted to calm my spaces. I have ended up rearranging, decluttering and redecorating our great room (entryway/play area/dining room/living room). I didn't actually spend much money (i think I spent $40) but it feel so much cozier and calmer. It is super easy to tidy and easier to clean now. I am thoroughly enjoying it.
    But also? Small kitchen appliances at rentals are terrible. I'm bringing my own next time. 🤣

    In vacation rentals, every object has a defined home. It might not be set up in the most convenient way, and the flow of the space might not be the greatest, but everything has a place it belongs, and plenty storage is provided to keep the guest's possession out of sight also. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm a definite Ladybug. I'm trying to arrange so I have the things I need, the things have a home, and it's all convenient to access and use and easier to put away after, instead of leaving out.

    Yes! This perspective shift is so important. Before the pandemic I had a career that sent me out of town once a year to different cities for a trade show. It was my one opportunity of the year to stay in a decluttered place, a hotel room. More than showing me how little stuff I _actually_ needed, it showed me how much happier and lighter I felt without all of that stuff stressing me out. Coming home was always depressing. That taught me a lot!

    What annoys me about vacation rentals is the need for 50 throw pillows on the bed (I am NOT talking about pillows actually used for sleep) and DECOR on the bathroom counter!!!! No one needs potpourri or candles or whatever when they're on vacation. I wind up having to move that junk so I will have somewhere for my own stuff. I wish they would also consider not having a decorative shower curtain but a liner only. It would make bathtime with kids so much easier without having to flip the big decor curtain out of the way. I just find lots of clutter in rentals.

    I did a lot of world tourist travel between 2008-2019 and quickly learned container logic. I was in my 70s and was never strong to start with, so minimalism on the go was important. Biggest win was a 7-week Southeast Asian trip with a carry-on and my "one extra item," which was actually a roomy, zippered and pocketed fabric frozen food bag from Ikea. If something didn't fit, it didn't go, and I never missed anything I didn't bring with me. I also learned to be careful of purchases along the way, choosing smaller mementos but more of them. Fortunately, I love a good puzzle, so continually making it all fit was fun rather than frustration.

Our sump pump stopped working and we had 2 inches of water in our basement. There was 15 inches of snow outside and then we had about 5 inches of rain on top of the snow. So we had no choice but get rid of a lot of stuff!!!

    After going on many weeklong seminar trips, I realized that I was most anxious in the rooms that had a lot of everything. It was much faster and mentally easier to get meals and cleaning done when there were minimal (or only 1) option. I noticed it was also better for us to work as a team when there was less to communicate, compromise, And negotiate. If there is only one cleaning spray for the bathroom, then that’s how it will be cleaned - end of story.

    Well.... I don't have the opportunity to stay anywhere but here...yet. That isn't a complaint. I love my trainwreck of a house. I am in my 50's with kids grown & gone & unfortunately I "collect" antiques. This means my clutter consists of Lego & Fisher Price from a billion years ago, old clothes the kids left behind, tools " I might need" being a single female, cool stuff from thrift stores, & of course, a few antiques of value. Not a hoarder as there is room to walk & the trash goes out weekly ...& I constantly give things away happily. I have plants by the trillions . I also have a great perspective and cannot thank you enough for encouraging me to broaden my horizons ! A person absolutely has to have a sense of humour when dealing with life chaos. I love your videos & so appreciate the empowerment. I can now have a coffee & smile before I tackle my "just do the dishes" . Thank you more than I can say. ♥

    I had a major perspective shift this year. We relocated from Chicago to TX and have been living with my in-laws for 4 mos while our house was being finished. We spent 30 of those days traveling so everything we owned fit into 3 canvas bags for clothes, and a large clear plastic tote for beach towels, bath/beauty/medicines/sunscreen. Other than some wear and tear on the clothes for wearing the same thing over and over, and washing it weekly. It is scary and refreshing with how much I can do without.

    I had already done a purge on our entire house (and got rid of a ton of stuff!) when we left for vacation for a week where we stayed in an Airbnb. As soon as we walked in the door when we got home, I said, "I have too much stuff!" I started to speed purge through all the rooms again, thinking certain items just weren't needed, and I let go of a good bit more stuff. So, yeah, definitely a perspective shift.

    I hate to cook in Air B&B kirchens if vacation rentals. I hate not having the right size pots, pans, skillets, kettles, etc for what I want to cook. They usually have crappy knives, very few serving utensils, no storage foe leftovers, whatever. I love traveling but I hate having to “make do” in poorly-stocked kitchens.

    @Dana K White thank you so much for this video. You remind me of me so much, it isn't even funny. I LOVE the feeling of checking into one of those vacation homes/rentals and knowing I do not have to think about tripping over piles of stuff for a whole week! The worst part of vacation is knowing you have to return home, back to the "chaos". It should have been so obvious, but this video has truly "turned the light on" for me. I am currently reading your second book, (and that says a lot because I'm not a big reader) but I see me so clearly, it's almost like you've been to my house. Thank you for your inspiration! You are on point, I have serious declutter urges every time we go away. I also have the urge after we stay with my parents. They like their maximalist decor style, tchotchkes on every surface. Not my cup of tea. I like much more minimalist aesthetic, even if there might be STUFF behind all the doors ;)

    I love the idea of perspective shift. The vacation rental situation can offer that, for sure. I also experienced a similar shift while I was pregnant. We had NO money for maternity clothing, so I thrifted or borrowed a few outfits. I had 4 pair of pants, 2 dresses, and about 7 tops. That was it for the 9 months, and it was FINE.... I didn't need anything more! It still took years to minimize my regular clothing (and I do keep way more than that in my current inventory), but it made me see that it was not only easy, but convenient to live that way. Selecting clothes, storing and washing them required no brain-power! Recently, I reminded myself of those years, and pared down to the 'containers' that exist in my bedroom: one dresser, and my half of the closet. I no longer have an 'off season' or 'doesn't fit' box because it all fits in the space I have available. I don't miss switching over the clothes or staring at the 'doesn't fit' box (which taunts me). It's good to have a new perspective.

    We are moving in a month to a new house. When we move, I want our master bedroom to feel like a hotel room. Simple. For sleeping, and maybe a tv. Our house before, the master bedroom held the baskets of clean clothes and the computer desk and printer. Our rental house is small so we have piles of fishing stuff and unpacked boxes in our bedroom. I want nothing extra when we move! Well, maybe a decorative chair. But simple, and uncluttered!

I just went through cookbooks that I swore I’d never part with. I just donated 3 of them. It felt good. And I went through my real Tupperware and am giving 3 bowls away filled with cookies to guys that I see working around my area. Keep the thoughts coming they are really helping me. I appreciate you.

      For some, doing one load a day works better as part of your daily routine. I hear ya on the having-too-few-clothes bit. I have underpacked before, and it really annoyed me. I have also had an unexpected extension in my Christmas visit once, due to car trouble. We ended up staying about 3 extra weeks waiting for them to approve the warranty work. I had packed 3 pairs of pants and 4 sweaters for our original 2-week stay. Wearing the same clothes for 5 weeks made me realize I could never go that minimal. It drove me crazy because I like variety and got bored wearing the same 4 things day in, day out.

    This is wonderful insight. Although i will never be a minimalist, especially when i was stockpiling before the pandemic and knew something was awry back in January. I will never not have enough food, water and tp for 6 months. This being said, all of this happened in the midst of a military retirement, new job, moving 600 miles away, living in an rv for 12 months (which should have been 3 mo) while we sold our home, bought a new one and renovated. Living in the rv really did give me new perspective on what we really needed. The hardest part was knowing I had whatever item it was that i needed in government storage, like alll the winter clothing, blankets, school supplies, office supplies and having to rebuy them . When our pack out came, it was easy pair the first layer down. And I was able to sell a ton at a garage sale and what didn’t sell, a full 8x10x3’ trailer load left. The sentimental crap is where I’m stuck. Boxes upon boxes of pictures and the dead relatives jewelery, scrapbooks, military items is daunting.

      I recently went through a lot of pictures. I threw away a lot with scenery (without people) and a lot of duplicates, such as the same person opening 10 different presents. It definitely took a while! It was fun and sad at the same time reminiscing about the past. I would suggest Baby Steps in getting it done.

      There are a few photo projects out on the web that seek uploads of scenery photos to document passage of time/changes. I'll try to find links and post them. Also, my area has a scrap exchange, and old photos (especially with people) are readily reused in art projects like handmade greeting cards, collages.

    Great perspective! I am very much a minimalist. In fact, the last time I stayed at an Airbnb, they had more stuff than my family and I do. I’m a single parent and still have 2 of my 3 kids at home. We don’t have a lot of money. Becoming a minimalist has made it so that we can actually save money. We live in a small 2 bed condo and have only what we really love and need. It’s super easy to keep my home clean and laundry and dishes don’t take up a lot of time. For us it works amazingly. I just thought this was funny as my perspective was the opposite when we went to the rental.

    Camping really helps put things into perspective too. Only once now (maybe twice) have we loaded the van then my husband leaves to get gas and ice and I stay behind and clean! it's so much easier! Now if we could do that and give me like 2-4 hours to declutter that would be great!!
