How absolutely amazing to see my late father, David Kelly, performing the role of Peachum in The Beggar's Opera! I was far too young in 1963 to remember this and am so thrilled that this is here! Thank you to whoever uploaded this
Amazing to see that a popular song like "Mack the Knife" has such a history. O' Lucy Brown.
Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill were commissioned in 1928 to do a 200th anniversary German adaptation of "The Beggar's Opera" in Berlin. The theater management were wary of the "modernist" Weill's music, and secretly stood ready to use the original songs instead. In the event, of course, "Die Dreigroschenoper" ("The Threepenny Opera") was a huge hit. The "Moritat von Mackie Messer" ("Mack the Knife") is actually an entirely original song; the only music Weill took from "The Beggar's Opera" is Mr. Peachum's opening number. Also from this period dates the immensely popular, and somewhat prettified musical realization/orchestration by Frederick Austin. Britten's bold, inventive version heard here dates from the late 1940s, when he and the newly formed English Opera Group were in need of repertoire in addition to Britten's operas like The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring.

hi
I hate opera, and only watching this because of an assignment in my music class. (music class is a requirement for graduation - not by choice).
Me too 💔
