It actually could be a reference to the fact that the Zapper, a gun tool for games on the NES in the 80's, often had problems functioning, and sometimes wouldn't work at all.
It wasn't to the point of it being recalled, however, so they just compensated those who had issues and went on with selling them.

Effects on the beams can stack, meaning that if a beam that already has its damage boosted hits another enemy, it will boost the current damage even further. This allows it do about 30,000 damage in one shot.

Recently got back into Terraria duo to 1.4 and got both the Gray and Orange ones pretty early, instantly fell in love with them, especially for crowd control, since for me at least 1 or 2 effects will pop up before using my mana bar, which is enough for fighting normal enemies, since the bar will mostly likely be filled on the next battle.
In my first 1.4 playthrough a traveling merchant with a orange zapinator arrived as soon as I beat the wall of flesh, I beat all 3 mech bosses with it using only meteor armor
If i had to sum up the zapinator, it would be: Jack of all trades, master of none.
Or broken, in every sense of the word
Or to go with the full saying “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

@@talangieske7709 the company that made ocram was pipeworks studio, and re-logic didn't agree with pipework's studio's on ocram being in the game, they didn't want him as the final boss.

Ocram was created by one of Engine Software's developers Marco (in which the bosses name is backwards for his creator's name), but Re-Logic moved on from Engine Software to Pipeworks studios, because Ocram and other console exclusives are owned by Engine Software, most of the console exclusives were removed

Reminds me of bogosort, the (theoretically) fastest sorting algorithm. You just shuffle it and check and see if it's sorted, which can happen on your first try
you failed to mention how any of the 10 random attributes can stack on every single shot fired meaning a single beam will probably end up hitting more than once
Yup like the random chance of getting a shot that clones itself that gets slower and deals 10 times damage, while you're wearing very specific gear and buffs and is very very lucky and deal 3 hits in a single shot that deal 5000 damage in Moon Lord's face each. You could technically one shot each part of the Moon Lord if you're extremely lucky, and if you're even more extremely lucky you could one shot the Moon Lord itself. However the chance of such an event occurring is so ridiculously small that it's hardly even worth mentioning, however the likelihood could be raised by having critter statues summoning critters as target for the beams, so eventually you could have 20-30 beams on screen.

My first playthrough of Terraria I got both of the Zapinators, not aware of their power, and ended up beating the game in about a week. I was quite lucky.

2:05 seemingly useless? Have you ever used this monster of a weapon against Destroyer? Along with nimbus it can destroy destroyer while the player just has to fight the probes.

Apparently this was a weapon that the devs used during testing, but it was removed because of copyright. Apparently it resembled a NES Zapper (or whatever it was called). It has been obtainable in 3DS version and probably Wii U version for a while.
The cutoff for that "what!" you exclaimed was absolutely perfect.

You forgot the part where if it rolls an effect that lets a shot hit more than once it will continue to make rolls for each hit.
It can roll the damage multiplier multiple times on a single shot.
This can lead to over 20000 damage in a single hit if your lucky enough.
Not only that it can create other shots as well, so which if these also do the grind to a halt mod, they can also hit an enemy and roll for 10x damage. and then roll for another 10x damage, for a total of 100x damage, and with the right gear, you can easily reach 100% crit, so you can basically deal inf damage, but with the right gear just doing 10x damage is 4000 damage to Moon Lord. You could technically shoot once and if you managed to build an arena for it, you could kill every single boss at the same time in one shot.

Funnily enough, whilst in an Expert mode goblin raid with a friend, when I was using the zappinator it inflicted around 6116 damage.
Funnily enough that's not even rare.

when i was doing my first master mode playthrough with my friends i was doing magic so when the travelling merchant came along with it, i bought the orange zapinator. I used it for a bit and thought it was terrible. I didn't even notice that it had different effects when hitting enemies, so clearly i didn't use it long enough, but at the time i already had other seeking attacks and such and i thought "why would I want to use a better space gun when I can use weapons that I dont even have to aim with?". Boy was I wrong.
I haven’t used either of the zapinators (gray or orange) but I got the gray zapinator prehardmode and I didn’t know it was so good
Re-Logic took a look at mr g&w and said "yea I can make something like that"
I once one shotted master mode bee queen with the gray zapinator (if you get a 10x damage effect + slow + pierce inside the enemy hitbox that is 60 shots per sec), now it is my favorite weapon in the game. It is at the very least the most fun and unique one for sure.

after using it with enemies I realized it was broken I realized that since I threw an enemy at 1000 meters plus it did an exaggerated damage even so I kept it for the advantage it gives :p

journeys end is the FINAL *MAJOR* update, now they are going to patch bugs or exploits like for example, titanium armor that could replace the baghacnachagnafnafafafha (terraria.gamepedia.com/Fetid_Baghnakhs)

I was contemplating doing a mage on a run I had started up, and when I say "Grey Zapinator" being sold, I knew it was destiny. However, while the item is awesome (except when it summons Queen Bee when I just wanted to yoink Nature's Gift), it made me realize that the Traveling Merchant can be improved. I wish there was a way to 'order' the merchant to have a certain item next time it spawns. It would make the game more enjoyable as more items would be easier to obtain. Even if the order was a random chance to become true, it would still be an improvement.
That kinda takes the wind out of the sails that is the Traveling Merchant. He's not out for you, he's out for himself. He travels the world finding rare and/or unique items. It wouldn't make much sense if you went, "hey, can you get this specific item for me?" He doesn't know what he's gonna find in the first place, so he can't even promise that.
His whole concept is based on you not knowing what he'll have. I understand that can be annoying when you want one specific item, but just playing the game at a natural pace will have him show up plenty of times to bring you what you may want.
Enjoying the game and wanting to improve your experience is fine, but I disagree with the notion that changing the traveling merchant would really give that much more happiness if that's your one gripe with the game.

@@Dracon350Yeah, eventually most items will show up, but some will often appear long after they are useful or applicable in progression.
@@spacegoat8559 A fair point, but a LOT of items suffer from the 'progression' creep, and honestly, it's just a matter of how fast paced of a game you want to place. If you're just lolly-gagging and building stuff, then the Traveling Merchant might actually provide some weapons you'll use for longer than thirty minutes.
Vice versa, if you're out getting shit done, by the time TM rolls around with the Code-1 you could already have Valor making it useless, which is okay. Each playthrough of Terraria should be unique, and that's why sometimes you'll find the merchant selling you the Katana day 1, and later on you'll find him trying to pawn it off to you when you already have Zenith.
I know he isn't always helpful, but there are times when he can be and overall he helps bring a more unique experience to each playthrough of the game.

I was using meteor armor at the start of hard mode and found the traveling merchant, bought the orange zapinator and didn’t know what was happening but I used it up u til I got razorblade typhoon and it worked out pretty well, expert mode, I swapped my armor to spectre after plantera
