Big Dog's Backyard Ultra: The Last Man Standing

- Опубликовано: 24 ноя 2024
- An ostensibly simple race, Big’s Backyard Ultra has been described as one of the most mentally and strategically complex races in the world - contestants run a 4.1 mile loop every hour, day or night, nonstop. The last man or woman standing is crowned the victor…
Big’s Backyard Ultra (2018) is the first in-depth look at this legendary event. Viewers explore the mental challenges of several race competitors, and get a rare peak behind-the-scenes with race director Gary “Laz” Cantrell, of Barkley marathon fame.
The film provides insight into the hopes and desires of runners before the event, and reflections on their experiences when the race finally comes to an end. Viewers become familiar with notable figures such as last year’s winner Guillaume Calmettes, the women’s champion Courtney Dauwalter, and Johan Steene, the unlikely but sensational victor and last man standing.
The documentary is the latest production of IRun4Ultra, an ultrarunning publication and global leader in running-related media.

I'm not a runner, I'm a cyclist, but I find Ultra Running very fascinating. The sport is probably the most egalitarian of all sports in the men and women can compete so evenly, the young and older racers are the same. It is all about mental toughness, and I find that so beautiful to watch. I also now consider Courtney Dauwalter one of the greatest and most intriguing athletes I have seen. She is amazing.
She's definitely intriguing 😊 for sure.
Worth noting a couple of points. Early in the video a runner mentions the challenge of the road loop. The course was designed to even the playing field between road and trail runners. Pure road runners find the trail equally difficult. Also, the importance of previous multiday running experience cannot be stressed enough to achieve success at this race. Johan has gone crewless (and aidless) at multiple 300 mile races, and has completed 550 miles in six days. Fabulous brainchild of a race by Laz.
SteelTownRunner Thank you kindly 🎥
Courtney is my hero. She and all the rest are simply amazing. I’m wrecked after staying up 24 hours. 67? It’s just not in my mental capacity to grasp! Props to every runner.
badass courtney
What a wonderful film, Linda - congrats to you and Juan Abdo for capturing this story so beautifully. Good to see friends Guillaume and Maggie featured prominently here too.
Paul Encarnación We are glad you like! 🌸
I have utmost respect for ultra runners as they are testing and pushing the boundaries of mental and physical thresholds of their bodies. Running a marathon itself is a challenge, running for days is mindboggling
I come back to this video now and then because its one of the most beautiful videos.
JONNYASPEN thank you 🙏

Anders Magnusson Thank you 😊
Amazing video! Thanks!
Martin Ström Thank you 😊
Beautifully done, Linda. Thanks so much for creating this movie.
A couple (very) small things. When Laz is giving the opening pep talk, he says "trail etiquette" (not "adequate"), and "clothesline" (not "close line").
Sundari Kraft you are welcome 🙏
Just beautiful!
Sandra Martinez thank you 😊
Amazing...
Such a great video and a very cool race.
Cjaye Media Thank you for watching 🌸

The mind always gives up before the body!
I read a book titled “The Long Walk” many years ago. A fun and interesting read
By the Polish? One of my favorite books!

Beyond The Ultimate 🌷🌸
And the woman is the....runner-up. Damn, so close! Really was rooting for the happy ending
music name please from 13th min
Why the hell does this only have 100k views? i'm only a beginning runner because of a divorce to clear my head and slowly fell in love with the sport, since i do it for mental/head clearing and to be fit for my kids i have no end-game like a half marathon of a full, my mind and will goes further than that, just injured myself in the last week of april #corona. Doing to much with to little of a buildup and possibly runner's knee. My goal for now is to run the 'dodentocht 2021' in Belgium, it's a 100km walk/run. I hope to be able to work up to it with my off-schedule of 1 week no kids / 1 week kids, oldest came 4 yesterday so they can't really accompagnie me on runs for now and the corona ensures they can't go to my brother aswell. Anyway just a little heart release to say thank you for this short film and a new subscriber !
Diëgo D. Glad you like 😀
Does anyone know what the background music is in this video??
Megan Vogt love it 😊
The third guy didn't get enough screen time he seems very interesting but a great short documentary anyway
Jere R thank you 🙏
Laz !
Great film, Linda. Any plans to document the Barkley Marathons?
TexasCountryLiving yes we are bringing a big crew. 🙂
Are runners allowed to leave early on a loop to gift themselves a longer break before the next? Conversely, run a loop fast, and start late on the second loop to give a longer gap between loops?
No everyone starts loop together but can arrive earlier for more of a rest.
The new world record was made today 102 laps 685km
What did he say at 14:23? ('This is my..... never forget that')
I think it is "This is magic happening here, never forget that"
@@UnderAnElephant It sounds so clear now. Thanks Jami.
The main question is; "how deep are you willing to dig."
casey wilson Thanks 🙏
It's unbelievable to run 445 km!!!! In 67 hours.
Is it allowed to take naps during the race?? The organization is by the same guy of Barkley's, isn't it?
alberto guerra only if you have Leisure time, if not you keep moving on.
@@IRun4Ultra hehehe. Amazing!! Thanks.
when can people sign up for 2019?
Dmitry Dyatlov not sure, You can go to big dog ultra Facebook page.
Should be last one standing
Yes, because we all going to die soon.
Ive heard of a backyard event.
Called the last dash.
No toilets.
No quitters only squatters.
No shit 🤠
Courtney ran 279 miles straight? What?!?
No, they have an hour to finish a loop of like 4miles, after an hour they have to start a new loop or call it quits. So they better get back to camp before the time is up so they can take a short break
