I had the luxury of playing this piece with Samual R. Hazo while he directed. It was a blessing to work with him. I remembering him telling us the "I Love You" rule. You would never say I Love You the same way twice because if you did, you would sound crazy. This also applies to phrasing in music. Never play a phrase the same way twice!
I played 1st trumpet on this song when I was in 9th Grade, Tuba when I was in 10th Grade and then French Horn my senior year and this song was definitely one of my better challenges. A lot of the challenge is really the quick, sharp articulation required to make this piece sound clean.
nicee, i just got back from a Music in the Parks festival for CA, and my school band sweeped all the first places for concert bands, jazz ensembles, and orchestras :D
my band played both but i love Rush more because it's the first song i ever played when i made the top band my sophmore year in high school. Good Year!
it matters if you can count weird rhythms and time signatures. I adore this piece and I suggest suggesting it to your director, or if you are a director ordering this piece or Ride by Samuel Hazo.
I remember we played it last year for the band kids senior song. I was a Freshman in high school, I adore this song. I'll catch myself humming the tune every now and again :p I hope we play it for my Senior year. I was French Horn.
man my band is playing this song right now, and im first trumpet. i also love this song. and i add that high c at the end just to put the cherry on top
I played bass trombone for this piece and by the end I was one beat away from passing out... black dots and dizziness= success!! (director will never ask for a trombone to play louder again xD) AND french horns kick ass!
We played this last year in Symphonic...the weird time signature was hard to get our minds around the first time, but once we got it, it had a real unique pace to it.
@sesiom3005 my teacher read the composers notes to us when we played it. It was made for the anniversary of the wenger company or whatever its called (the music stand company). It was meant to be a follow up to ride, thats why it sounds so similar
Ride makes me feel like i'm on a roller coaster that is going over the first hill, Rush makes me feel more like flying with the most powerful wings beneath you
Our band director is considering having the Concert Band play this for spring. In other words, our school's lower of our two bands. Gonna be intense. Probably impossible. Fun as crap at any rate.
@386niggah While we didn't play this in middle school, we did play Ride in 10th grade. Which is hella harder than this is. And I played that sax solo, note for note.
My school symphonic band is playing this right now...one of my favorite pieces we've ever played, next to "Arabesque" and "Video Games Live" (oh, if anyone cares [which I'm sure you don't], I'm on timpani for this song. :D )
@TheBenguin529 im in middle school band too ( i play flute/piccolo). how did u guys ever get to play this?!?!?!?!? i sooooo wish our band could play this!!!!! ur lucky ( if ur telling the truth) :)
i talk to him once and he said that the french horn is the last insturment he writes in his music. he said he writes the part for the french that doesnt go with the song but sounds cool in it if u know what i mean
@freaky09012 I play flute. It was so hard for me! I hope you play fast. It's fun, though. It kind of sounds different than this from the flute section.
we played arabesque in my sophmore year of high school and we shitted on it then we moved to In the spring by holsinger. that fucking song is hella hard.
Yay, I hear the tire~! XD Or rim, whatever you call it. That's what I played in band during senior year and I still can't remember the proper name, lol. :P
@apachexcat cool! me and my best friend are good at annoing our band director unit he'll do what we ask (whe not being disrespectfull. he knows were just messing with him.) so maybe we can get him to tell the high school directer (who he's friends with) how good we are and to let us play it. also, have you ever played Solas Ane its one of my favorites (also by Mr. Hazo)?
played second trumpet on this my sophomore year and it was a bitch for me. Mind you i started playing freshman year. Now my senior year i can play things like this without any trouble
i agree with angelheartcat this song isnt very challenging rythmically but it is a very musical song it takes a greta deal of musicianship to play this song and it sound great
@Spacecommand23 thats to bad that you had to give up on it. we had to learn and perfect our third piece for mpa a week and a half before (that took a lot of effort; it was a either a grade 3 and a half or 4). are you guys really a middle school band?
@TheaterGeek7777776 my band played it too (I'm a senior in high school). I'm not sure any middle school band would tackle this, as it changes time signature every measure in some parts, and often in others. In high school, however, do what I did and suggest it to your director. If s/he thinks the band can handle it, he might try it.
I played in an intercollegiate and Hazo was the guest clinician.....he told us that this is the sequel or part 2 to Ride.....we played it faster than this but this sounds really good.
Ride vs Rush. Discuss. xD I posted this on "Ride" too, but I just wanna hear what people think. I'm more of a Rush fan, but that's maybe because our band played Rush before Ride -- even though I know Ride came first.
Our marching band performed an arrangement of this and 2 of Hazo's other pieces a few years ago. Hearing this version makes me both really happy and really sad. Really happy remembering this piece and all the fun we had learning it.....and really sad because holy crap our version sucked compared to this godliness lol
I had the luxury of playing this piece with Samual R. Hazo while he directed. It was a blessing to work with him. I remembering him telling us the "I Love You" rule. The beginning sounds like a theme song for a news station.
Legit
It sounded like a game show to me
Im a trumpet player and all those accents are my tortilla chips and I must lead them to the last rest after the long-hell, that is my salsa.
+deepSoup omg same lmfao, i play 3rd trumpet in this in grade 9 band
haha, I know right?
I played 1st trumpet on this song when I was in 9th Grade, Tuba when I was in 10th Grade and then French Horn my senior year and this song was definitely one of my better challenges. A lot of the challenge is really the quick, sharp articulation required to make this piece sound clean.
It's only ever players that comment on things like this.
The end note is hell......for trombones and trumpets
+Hannah Henn Need to work on that range! It took me a while but that note is almost a breeze now lol
YES! The end rips were a pain.
just played this as an honors piece and we did so amazing !! I was really impressed
nicee, i just got back from a Music in the Parks festival for CA, and my school band sweeped all the first places for concert bands, jazz ensembles, and orchestras :D
Gotta love that last trumpet note.
This is like a SUPER fun piece to play.
So much energy goes into this.
Fun to preform. (:
Played this last year on trumpet, HS Junior then. Fun piece, theres alot of energy you can put into this song.
my band played both but i love Rush more because it's the first song i ever played when i made the top band my sophmore year in high school. Good Year!
I played this my freshman year in our wind ensemble. Technical song but VERY FUN!! We also played ride my sophmore year. Both very good pieces!
it matters if you can count weird rhythms and time signatures. I adore this piece and I suggest suggesting it to your director, or if you are a director ordering this piece or Ride by Samuel Hazo.
I remember we played it last year for the band kids senior song.

I was French Horn.

LOVE this song. over five years of band, this is definitely my favorite to play
Playin this song in concert band...it changes meter sooo much but it's such a cool piece. definitely worth all the practicing :)
I love this piece my sophmore year we played it and this year (now my senior) my director decided to bring it back
Playing this in honor band tomorrow. I CAN'T FREAKIN WAIT.
*_8 years ago_*
We had this in our marching show my freshman year. We almost sight read it today in class.

I was in band back in High School and Middle School. We never played anything near this awesome. Sam Hazo is brilliant.
Ride makes me feel like i'm on a roller coaster that is going over the first hill, Rush makes me feel more like flying with the most powerful wings beneath you
@ZamboniCheeks I'd love to here a 7th grade percussion section even try count this! lol I'm a junior, and we had a hard time with this.
Our band director is considering having the Concert Band play this for spring. In other words, our school's lower of our two bands. Gonna be intense. Probably impossible. Fun as crap at any rate.
Those are the coolest horn rips EVER!!!!
All of Hazo's songs that have Timpani pieces, are excellent. I play them at my school. Amazing.
My favorize hazo piece!
Im doing this song next year on flute. Can't wait!!
timpani and cymbals.. this song is beast. gonna play it for district band, hope everything goes well.
the range almost killed me on the trumpet oww
The freaking drum solo when you have to tune the timpani up and up is so cool
This is amazing! I'm on first trumpet for this!!!!
Can't wait for marching band. my band director is using this as the opening.
My wind ensemble played this song in Europe for tour! We also played it quite a bit faster. But still a fun song!
@LostCallProductions Both. Never one. The hard part is figuring out which one comes first.
This sounds like... the the most epic curtain call music for some sitcom or play that's freaking awesome.
We're playing this for our Spring Concert. It's EPIC! Love it.
*2nd Trumpet.
in our score it's for baritone/euphonium and horn, but after a few rehearsals they got it.
I loved this piece...i miss it so much
Ahhh the high school band memories
Our Wind Ensemble is performing this piece. Last year we performed Ride.
I played this my freshman year. It was HELL when we first sightread it. But eventually we got it down.
Have never not absolutely loved any trumpet part during a Hazo piece. Or just not loved a Hazo piece in general.
MUITO MASSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
QUANDO ESCUTO ESSA MÚSICA ME EMOCIONO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q BELEZA
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@apachexcat Actually, my band, The Kealing Middle School Wind Ensemble from Austin, Texas played this and it sounded very similar to the recording.
This sounds so much like Ride
This piece is considered the sequel to ride.
they're twins
It’s his less cool little brother
Did you know Samuel Hazo wanted to name the piece Ride 2 at first
@386niggah While we didn't play this in middle school, we did play Ride in 10th grade. Which is hella harder than this is. And I played that sax solo, note for note.
My school symphonic band is playing this right now...one of my favorite pieces we've ever played, next to "Arabesque" and "Video Games Live"
(oh, if anyone cares [which I'm sure you don't], I'm on timpani for this song. :D )
I can see the marching show now...Opener is ride followed by sevens, then the southern hymn, and a finaly of rush all made by the great Samuel Hazo
One day, when I fulfill my dream of going into music education, this will be the song my favorite senior class will play. They will have deserved it.
@freaky09012 I play flute. It was so hard for me! I hope you play fast. It's fun, though. It kind of sounds different than this from the flute section.
Yeah it is by far the hardest to play an. But it will be pure awesomeness when we finish learning this piece.
REALLY wish I play this before I graduate high school ;) Then I'd get the horn rips at the end, beautiful eh
we played arabesque in my sophmore year of high school and we shitted on it then we moved to In the spring by holsinger. that fucking song is hella hard.
sight read this today :) the bassoon part is so much easier than the others :P
muito foooooooooda!!!!!!
@RevLime they sound very similar. especially in the beginning. and i like how hazo has to put some measure that has 8 beats in it haha
Yay, I hear the tire~! XD Or rim, whatever you call it. That's what I played in band during senior year and I still can't remember the proper name, lol. :P
iluvda670 break drum :]
@OliviaJackson29 wow thats amazing. may i ask what school you go to?
Ride Rush and Sevens is lyk a suite ~ all three go hand in hand
@TheaterGeek7777776 Nope, haven't played that one. We've played Novo Lenio, but off the top of my head that's it for Hazo's music.
Hazo)?
@adekwan23 Rush technically *is* a sequel to Ride...the composer even said that himself.
practice, its a great piece to play on trumpet, the last note is the hardest to hold and hit the d at the end,,,just down to stamina...enjoy
Love this song (: playing it is a pain .
played second trumpet on this my sophomore year and it was a bitch for me. Mind you i started playing freshman year. Now my senior year i can play things like this without any trouble
i agree with angelheartcat this song isnt very challenging rythmically but it is a very musical song it takes a greta deal of musicianship to play this song and it sound great
@marine9588 It's nickname is "Ride II" That's what it was gonna be until someone suggested rush (I own the conductor's score and it's in there..
Got a chance to meet Sam Hazo. Amazing man
dat gliss tho
@Spacecommand23 thats to bad that you had to give up on it. we had to learn and perfect our third piece for mpa a week and a half before (that took a lot of effort; it was a either a grade 3 and a half or 4). are you guys really a middle school band?
@angelfangs7 I have never thought of that before, but now that I see it I totally agree!
@TheaterGeek7777776 my band played it too (I'm a senior in high school). Ooh! That trombone at 1:43
Amazing!!!!
John Phillip Sousa may hate us french horns, but that's perfectly fine, because Samuel Hazo loves us to bits.
I like Ride, but the transitions are soooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooood!
I played in an intercollegiate and Hazo was the guest clinician.....he told us that this is the sequel or part 2 to Ride.....we played it faster than this but this sounds really good.
We're taking this to festival and it is sucha fun piece! *Bass Drum
Love this one. :)
0:13 I play bass so I dont get to play it, but I love listening to that bit I think this song is Epic!
it's like Ride's twin. Look up that song by Hazo if you don't know of it already
@dreamtheaterepicwin Hazo intended it to be Ride Part II according to his original score
@cranberry133 But theres a 7/4 section too :o
It's the "Rush" after the "Ride". According to the conductor's info blurb anyway.
@TheaterGeek7777776 I hope you get to play it too; it's quite the fun song. I'm a drummer; in rush I played snare/toms
it's almost identical to another song I played awhile back called Ride by Sam H.
At my school have to play all the cymbal parts plus tamtam, crash cymbals, AND high hat!!!!!!!!! challenge accepted!
Ride vs Rush. Discuss.
xD I posted this on "Ride" too, but I just wanna hear what people think.
I'm more of a Rush fan, but that's maybe because our band played Rush before Ride -- even though I know Ride came first.
Love this song

Really happy remembering this piece and all the fun we had learning it.....and really sad because holy crap our version sucked compared to this godliness lol
@adamanddustinh It pretty much is, they are both very similar
7/4 wow it is a fun and hard song
This was actually noted by Samuel Hazo to be Ride Part II
psh, Rush, Ride, it's all about Arabesque!
when we played this song last year and my teacher was explaining the rythem at 3:14 he said it should sound like 'The Simpsons, The Simpson!' lol
