I was ready to order a Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20 degrees quilt. After seeing your review, I changed my mind and switched to Katabatic GearFlex 30 degree. I totally trusted your comments and I hope you will not disappoint me. I have never heard about Katabatic Gear before so I did research for two days and I have just ordered a Katabatic Gear Flex 30 degree guilt. Thanks very much for making this video, especially helpful for me as a new canoe camper.
Rebecca Li Excellent choice! One of the great things about the Flex series vs the Revelation is the draft blocker at the footbox, the Revelation does not have this which for me caused an issue with cold feet in just the low 40’s (I had a 20 degree). Enjoy your purchase!
I can't recommend the Katabatic enough. It is unreal (to me) how conservative their temp ratings are. I've slept in my Palisade 30 at 17 degrees (21 inside the tent) and had no cold issues. I'm 5'5" 141lbs with very little body fat. Slept warm and snug as a bug.
Great video. I have found the same things with EE quilts. I have a 30 degree enigma long wide and its more like a 40 compared to other companies. It's poorly designed imo as well. The vertical baffles don't keep the down in place due to their size, both length wise, and width. Its also just a flat square, not differently cut. Poor ergonomics make for a drafty experience. I also believe they are under stuffed. I'll probably add 3oz of down to mine to fill out the baffles and make it a true 30 degree quilt. I dont sleep warm either. I got my ee on sale for 210 but wouldn't pay todays prices as their designs are essentially the same. Hope this helps anyone thinking about ee quilts.🙂 Not hating I just think there are better options out there. For a little more money you get a much better bag/quilt.
Clicking around on the net. Just came across your video! Thanks for the info man! Last I saw you - NY/CT boarder. Then you were gone! Freaking crushing miles! Good work man! Ordered my Palisades yesterday! Just so excited about it I keep watching random videos on it
Darren Palmer Yo what up Darren!! Yea man, I just got done with a trip in Colorado with the Palisade. I recorded a low of 26 degrees and I was warm! With just shorts and thin socks on! When I did my testing with my EE 20, I tested to 27 degrees, with DOWN BOOTIES and leggings my feet were frozen! The Palisade is the business man, enjoy it!
I have a Katabatic Flex 20 (reg wide). I agree with everything you said about Katabatic. It is the kind of bag you leave to your favorite friend in your will.
I have the Katabatic Gear Flex 15 and absolutely love it. Best quilt on the market. I do find that it is hard to compress inside my pack so I use a Sea to Summit compression bag to compress it and my sleep system clothing down to a small enough size inside my pack. John from MI
Dude the most comprehensive versus video I’ve seen and I’m so impressed with the palisade. So glad I watched this before firing the gun on an EE, y’know what I mean dawg!😂
Excellent review! I got a Katabatic quilt on sale for under $300 I know, I think about $289 maybe about a month ago. Haven’t used it yet but I got it because of what John Z said about the temperature rating being more true. I got a 22 degree one on sale.
I recently bought a Katabatic Gear Sawatch quilt. I was looking at UGQ and Enlightened Equipment quilts, and remembered hearing people talk about Katabatic. I felt that Kat. quilts were a little better than the other brands. I decided to pay a bit more for a great quilt from the start. I was afraid to buy another quilt and then feel like buying a Katabatic after the fact. Now my only problem is that I want to buy a Kat. 30 degree quilt in order to have the option of saving a few ounces when the nights might not be as cold! They really seem like a great company.
I have a Revelation 20 and do get those draft issues when rolling. Its a habit to hold the material in place now. I still think its a pretty good quilt and I paid 250 for mine. Ive taken it down to 25 but its like a survivor rating. I ended up buying the down socks, Torrid apex down pants and jacket for when I get in those temps again. Nice review
Thanks for the review...I'm looking at both ,leaning towards the Katabolic just trying to figure out if I need the wide version....I can see by your video that the Kat cut allows for better closure(draft reduction) comparing then side by side....really like the Kat.
Thank you so much for this review. I've been reading & looking for a year at reviews and this is exactly the one I was searching for. I'm looking to do a section hike of the PCT this year and I wonder if you think a palisade would be warm enough? Would you suggest maybe adding a few ounces of overfill? I sleep average as far as temp goes. Good luck on the AT !
Nathan Beard I personally don’t think the overfill would be necessary, however it also depends on what section you’re doing and when! Glad you enjoyed the video, got a lot more coming!
Good comparison man! I'm still kinda workin my way into a quilt lol no pun intented. I was thinking about getting the 30 degree enlightened equipment convert full zip for my 3 season bag but price was still an issue for me so i decided to go with a Sea to Summit Micro 2 ultra dry down bag. I got lucky and got a really good discount i paid $220 all together. I feel its got best of both worlds cause its a hybrid mummy/quilt. Its got the draw string foot box for ventilation and the hood opens fully almost flat which is good for me as a stomach sleeper. I went with the long version and it still only weighs 1lb 7oz. I really wanted the Micro 3 but i settled for the 2. No deals on the Micro 3 that i could find.? I like the Micro 2 though and so far no complaints. I know Sea to Summit is more of a big box company but they still make good products in my eyes. I will eventually get a quilt, maybe a UGQ custom or Enlightened equipment custom. Katabatic gear is really nice but super expensive! So far UGQ has the best quilt prices i have found and the offer the PRYM-1 camo outter shell which is really sweet lookin! Its kinda like Kryptek camo if your familiar?! Hope this helps someone considering a quilt. Thanks for review man! Hike on!
Awesome vid, super helpful! I’m curious if your talking points would pretty much be the same in a Revelation vs. Flex video? The only main difference I know of is the Flex only has the differential cut around the footbox, not the whole quilt...
Andrew F yeah so the conservative rating, the pad attachment system and footbox angle I believe are all the same. The one main difference between the Rev and the Flex would be that the Flex has a draft blocker on the footbox, which is huge for sealing the hole and trapping warmth. This is huge imo
When I was shopping quilts earlier this year I looked at the UG quilt, but the price difference wasn't significantly cheaper than a similar EE quilt. So when it came down to the final decision I went with the EE because the lead time was half that of the UG. Do you know if the UG rating is more conservative like the Katabatic or more like the EE?
d oakleaf the UGQ is supposed to be a little more conservative than EE. I’ve compared my EE to my buddy’s UGQ and the UGQ definitely looked more full. I’m surprised to hear it wasn’t significantly more cheaper at the time. One thing I will say, if you’re having a problem with drafts, swap the stretchy straps for a non stretch strap and it should help a lot.
I think the pad being used has a lot to do with the "temp rating", I personally find my EE Enigma is pretty true to rating. With normal sleeping attire I can take it to 20 degrees comfortably, and with my cold weather leggings, base layer, wool socks, and light hat/gloves I've slept in the low 10's. I think a lot of people underestimate how many calories it takes to sleep comfortably in anything below freezing though, and if your really going to be doing that then having a snack for half way through the night helps a lot to keep you warm. That being said, it does look like the Palisades is a much sturdier build that weighs more as a result. Its also pretty obvious your more particular to the palisades quit, so whether this is really a unbiased review or not is pretty doubtful. Anyways, glad you like the quilt you have. That's all we really want for ourselves anyways. NOTE: I paid $170 for my quilt on sale a few years ago, that's really hard to beat.
Christian T. I use a Xtherm so it’s a pretty warm pad but I’m a cold sleeper as it is. Also, this is most certainly a biased review, but it comes from my experience of using the two quilts personally. I admit, I was super attracted to the EE because of its popularity and the weight. But after use, the Katabatic ended up being worth the extra ounces. I sincerely bought the Katabatic with a solid intention on returning it. I ended up really liking it and feeling a bit of buyers remorse with the EE afterwards
Hi, great comparison :) How does the 20 EE compare to the katabatic palisade (30) in warmth? It seems like the katabatic is a better product, but when trying to save as much weight as possible. Since the 20 EE is about the same weight as the 30 katabatic. And the EE quilt you have is before they started to increase the fill weight.
When I had tested these two, I was cold at 27F in the EE, warm in the Katabatic at 25F. I think it comes down more to design than anything else, the Katabatic is the superior product, but EE isn’t necessarily bad
I'd like to expand upon the shortcomings brought up here. Vertical baffles can, and do present significant advantages over horizontal in that they will prevent down falling out to the sides. However, baffle size is equally as important and when the baffles are as GIANT as on the EE (literally open space from head to foot, across foot, and back up top) it doesn't matter what direction they are going. Down is going to have enough mass in that kind of space to bunch up and open gaps. You can make horizontal baffles function well by overstuffing them so much that the tendency to fall out to the sides is counteracted but I think the best scenario is vertical baffles split into reasonable sizes....but that takes much more time and money. This is one of the reasons EE is so affordable. No diff cut though....I would never build without one....unless it's like a bed comforter or something.
Asher that’s the only difference. 1 oz of 850 fill will fill 850 cubic inches. 1 oz of 900fp=900 cubic inches Loft needed for X warmth is essentially area filled inside the quilt. Higher FP= less down needed to fill space= lighter weight. Tho some suspect 900+ being bullshit outside of lab conditions
Hey! Were you in Tuolomne Meadows in Sept 26-27? I think I met you there, I said I got cold with my Zpacks sleeping bag and you told me to check out Katabatic lol
Juan Dopazo I was going to do CDT and GDT this year but I’m currently injured and won’t be able to this year. I’ll be doing some smaller hikes this year and prepping for CDT next year
Yo sir, I'm a 6'0" ~180 lb guy who sleeps warm but very active from stomach to side. Trying to decide between regular width and the wide version. Any wisdom to impart having used it? Measuring around my arms and chest I get 49" if that info helps at all... Even if you don't answer I appreciate the super well done review of the quilt!
Ko3n3k33 I would suggest going with the wide quilt if measuring 49” around your arms and chest and also an active sleeper. As an average sleeper, I have taken my 30 degree palisade down to 25F comfortably, so that may help you in what temp to get. I own the 15, 30 and 40, 15 for winter, 30 for most thru hiking and the 40 for summer. Absolutely love them when compared to any other company
Hoping 4 ur opinion big dog..... I hate mummies but haven't gone 2 a quilt yet....watching u roll around in the vid seems just as tight n constricted as a mummy. Seems its all about weight n not getting tangled rolling over. What do u think? I'm considering a kifaru Doobie at this point. I just can't get comfortable. LoL. Thanks brother man.
Doug Spizman if you are wanting the most spacious setup, you could go with UGQ (Underground Quilts) wide and get no taper at the bottom. Or even going through EE and getting the widest one they offer. Most nights (like 90%) I’m not setting up the pad attachment system nowadays, which just makes it lay on you like a blanket.
Doug, good observation, I had a similar thought. I can’t & don’t count myself as a hiker yet, but as a keen photographer, ive been thinking about getting out more and maybe wild camping over night so I can get evening and dawn light. So, I’m researching equipment. I have an old sleeping bag, that was reasonable in its day, but it does feel very restricting when I move during the night, which got me looking at quilts....but seeing that potential of drafts for side sleepers, it’s not me wondering now.
@@TheLDunn1 they have quilts now that are 65 inches wide. Thats over a foot wider than regular quilts. No drafts and plenty of room. Takes over 2 months for them to make n around $400. If ur serious thats the way to go for comfort n wieght.
@@TheLDunn1 cant pull the trigger on a quilt yet. Have to order one on Amazon, feel it out. Then return it. LOL. I got a new sleeping bag for this winter.
Ok, so... If I choose the ketabatic 30 and overstuffs it 6lvl in accordance with there website... would that make it warmer and would that make it a 20 Degree quilt with the overstuff?? Or how does it work??
Usually warmth with quilts is in correlation to baffle loft height, so while overstuffing it to the brim will add warmth, it can diminish breathability, so it’d be better just to go up in temp rating to get the warmth you’re looking for.
Love my ee quilt, super comfy, however it does seem they skimp on the down fill with botched spots on the quilt which provide no warmth in certain areas.
Yep, I’m slow on the commenting lol... I’m researching the difference between EE and Katabatic and landed on the Katabatic. I’m 5’6’’ so I’m going with the 5’6 version after talking with them. I have always had a 20* synthetic bag and froze even during the summer so i was going to do the 15* flex due to that.... thoughts on that temp? I know us ladies run cooler than you guys do.... I also hate things around my neck lol so no cinching will happen there.
I would be interested in what you or your viewers think about how the Outdoor Vital synthetic quilt 15 degree LoftTek version compares? It is only about $170 packs down similar to a down quilt in size.
L T okay, where do I begin? The shell fabrics aren’t comparable, as Katabatic uses a lighter and downproof shell material sourced from Pertex, who is making the best shell materials for sleeping bags I see no mention of a differential cut, there is no elastic hem, no draft collar, and the pad strap system is inferior, thus, more drafts The weights aren’t comparable, that 15* quilt claiming 2lbs 1.6oz is a whole pound heavier. Not to mention that there isn’t any testing (or long term, unpaid reviews) that I’m aware of that proves it’s temp rating (or weight accuracy) The part down, part synthetic situation just sounds gimmicky to me, and afaik the lightest and most effective synthetic insulating material available for this use is Apex, which is what EE, Nunatak and MLD are currently all using, brands that have far greater tenure than Outdoor Vitals. Physics don’t allow for them to pack down to similar size None of what I’m saying is meant to come off as rude, just informative, so I hope it is received that way TL;DR they don’t compare
Jonathan the Hiker Thank you for the feedback - very good perspective. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I liked your input on the UnderGround Quilts - I have to stay in the lower budget range. I am approaching 70 and am trying to get my gear weight down but have to do a little at a time. Thanks again - I subscribed and look forward to your perspective on other gear.
L T totally understand! You can always look at Enlightened Equipment’s synthetic quilts and see if that’s for you. Or another company out there is Hammock Gear, with their Econ Burrow quilt, which is the cheapest I’ve seen, comparable in price to Outdoor Vitals and way lighter too. Just be sure to at least opt for the ‘Wide’ width. Happy hiking!
do you think you could use a 15ºf katabatic even during summer nights and just sleep with it half off or something like that? that way I can use it in a wider range and use it during the winter too. I'm also wondering about if the pad attachment system would be good with a foam thermarest z mat instead of an inflatable
Miso Paste a 15° would be very very warm during the summer, I don’t know if I could recommend that. Even the 30° quilt gets warm in the summer. Generally people prefer a regular sleeping bag in winter as well. I’d say get the quilt that fits 90% of your typical backpacking in terms of temps. In the case of the foam pad, the pad attachment system still works great!
Still a month later n best quilt review on utube hands down. That role over display was were its at.

Samnang T I used to inflate it using my pack liner, but I’ve stopped doing that and just blow it up with my mouth now

@@dougspizman6751 thanks Doug. Did you end up getting a quilt then?
I had to go with the enlightened equipment because they have a extra wide quilt. My shoulders are too wide for most.
The shell fabrics aren’t comparable, as Katabatic uses a lighter and downproof shell material sourced from Pertex, who is making the best shell materials for sleeping bags
I see no mention of a differential cut, there is no elastic hem, no draft collar, and the pad strap system is inferior, thus, more drafts
The weights aren’t comparable, that 15* quilt claiming 2lbs 1.6oz is a whole pound heavier. Not to mention that there isn’t any testing (or long term, unpaid reviews) that I’m aware of that proves it’s temp rating (or weight accuracy)
The part down, part synthetic situation just sounds gimmicky to me, and afaik the lightest and most effective synthetic insulating material available for this use is Apex, which is what EE, Nunatak and MLD are currently all using, brands that have far greater tenure than Outdoor Vitals.
Physics don’t allow for them to pack down to similar size
None of what I’m saying is meant to come off as rude, just informative, so I hope it is received that way
TL;DR they don’t compare

Thank you for the feedback - very good perspective.
Definitely not switching to “after watching this
excellent review! great word choices, your classic, mahalo for sharing! if you come Kauai ill show you sick canyons and waterfalls, good herb too
Rick Leibow I would love to take you up on that!
do you think you could use a 15ºf katabatic even during summer nights and just sleep with it half off or something like that? that way I can use it in a wider range and use it during the winter too.
In the case of the foam pad, the pad attachment system still works great!
ty
would you say ugq bandit is conservative rating as actual comfort or similar to EE in its rating
I returned my EE because it was colder than my Nemo siren
How tall r u btw?
Heri Bengs 5’6”
@@MeowHikes ok. Thx 😀
Lol no biases here
I get cold easily and I love my katabatic sawatch 15 degree😍
can you step on it so i can see how lofty it is.
Dudedet I won’t be making a video of that, but they list their specs online so you can find how thick the loft is
I just bout that Katabatic palisades today👍🤘🏼
In terms of fabric, does one feel more supple or soft than the other?
ccladiesman they both feel similar to the touch on the interior, but the exterior fabric on the Katabatic is a bit tougher
Good review, almost regretting ordering an enigma now :/
are you getting get into them and test it out
Dudedet not quite sure what this is asking, but I have used them both fairly extensively. In the video I get in them and move around
I want to see you get into the bag and step on it because I want to see how lofty it is physically.
Champ you must not have even watched the video.
U Texan?
yakitoriPB nope I’m in AZ!
