The Strat clean sound - OMG one of the Greatest out of phase strats sounds Definitely ranks up there with knopflers And the heavy sound Outrageous Textbook Guitar tones
The guitar riff is a hook. The chorus is a hook. Even the heavy bass is a hook. This song is loaded with them. If I was a fish, I'd be hiding under the reef. Great song.
I always wondered what this song was about. Yes, MADD used it as an anti-drinking and driving song. And a Contemporary Christian station in my area used to play it, so I thought that there was some connection there. Nice to hear Kim Mitchell explain the song in his own words. It's a monster track for sure, whatever it's about.
Kim has motivated me to play music since i was 12. (46 now) GFAS inspired our original song Dark Blue in 1991 and Rock and Roll Duty inspired our song Summer Flower...just realized that today!!! And we won the regional band competion in Northern New Brunswick the next year. Cheers!!
Kim that Gutiar lick just absolutely incredible has that Motown funk groove grind Rock same kind groove like Grand Funks Some kind of wonderful was. Soda still kickin ass and takin names almost fifty years later!
Just one of those old songs that at times becomes forgotten, then later rediscovered and loved more. Honestly, I was an early adopter of MTV back in the early 80's, and I do remember this song from long ago. But as music goes, if you don't have it in your vinyl collection, rotate through it often, it is just one of those songs that gets lost and forgotten through time. But it is also one of those songs you love to rediscover later and then listen to repeatedly... it is that good. Listening to Peter Fredette sing just makes this song 'Pop!! -- he's got a bit of that Paul Stanley-esque 'KISS' vibe that just rocks this song to a whole new level.
I’m American, but that doesn’t change how much this is an amazing classic of a song to me. In fact this song is great for screaming down a midwest America highway in a Buick GNX with a 12 pack of TAB by your side and a pack of Marlboro reds to go with it.
I still love this song! Kim always has excellent musicians in his band and the vibe between he and Peter is amazing. His drummer is also really good. This song has stood the test of time imo.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time! I remember seeing Kim live many years ago in the 80s at Stages Nightclub in Kingston. What a badass show! As a bass player myself I always wanted to figure out how to replicate Robert Sinclair Wilson’s tone on this song. Fantastic, old skool Canadian rock right there!! 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼 And Peter Fredette, good lord what an amazing musician! So glad I got to see them live, and I hope to again one day!
That's clean Strat, Man alive that is so great. Another song I have heard a million times and hope I live long enough to hear it another million times.
This tune got quite a bit of airplay in New Haven Connecticut on WPLR when it came out! Great tune..I still hear a lot of Kim's stuff up in the 1000 Islands in New York (Canadian radio..)
"I yell, and he sings"...classic Kim...luv the man..thanks for the all good times Kim. I still remember when came out with his EP Kim Mitchell...what an album...felt so good to have him back, well then the rest is history of course.
I had the honour of singing on the demo for this tune and a bunch of others for what became Kim's album. That session ranks with one of the best I was ever involved with. A huge tip of the hat to Jack Richardson for recommending me to Kim. Our voices blended really well. Kim isn't a shouter. He's a bona fide RAWK singer!
Such a great player , he has such an amazing back catalogue of really quality music and musicianship. Many top notch guitar players hold his playing and songwriting abilities in high regard
I’m a Guitar player, but the drum track is awesome on this song…there was only one station in the Little Rock market that played this song, Magic 105, and they played it until they went off the air about ten years ago. I crank it to 11 every time I here it!
I love this song Kim and have since I first heard it in 1985 as a matter of fact while you guys were touring for this album you played at Thunder Bay me and my buddies were front row nd you guys rocked the place after the show I got to meet you and the bass player I told you I been into your music since your Max Webster days and you seemed genuinely interested and grateful to hear that was really great to meet you guys back in those days they played good music like yours on the radio but now?
When i heard this song for the first time on a radio station, i definitely thought it was a boston song i hadn't heard, however i found this. Love the Boston self titled and love this.
Fredette's voice is amazing. He could sing with Kiss and people would think they're hearing Paul Stanley. Thanks for the music Mr Mitchell, especially Universal Juveniles!
Canada has produced some of the coolest in the biz. The Guess Who, Backman - Turner Overdrive and Kim Mitchell. Not to mention legendary prog rock band Rush
i saw kim at the pne fair in vancouver a few years back and it was the coolest thing 2 guys got in a fight when he was playing it was about 3 or 4rth song cops moved in pulled them out and the music stopped and as the 2 guys were getting taken out of there kim grabs the mic and says hmm those 2 should of went for a soda and even the cops looked back and chuckled then he went into the song and afterwards he said that was supposed to be the closing song but deemed it appropriate lol
Thanks for posting this! One of my absolute favorite songs....from any genre or era! Just a fun jam and great for driving or to have on your jogging playlist.
He used to play free shows for the neighbourhood Appearantly. People said he was a really nice and generous guy. A few good songs and kind of wish his career in the spotlight was longer.

Lager and Ale kicks ass on this album as well❤❤
Paul Delong, Such an amazing drummer. Thanks Kim !
Max Webster and Rush were our “Cruisin” songs from the 70’s. Nobody got out of the car until the song was over!
Awesome song
Key word here was FUN!!! Thanks for the memories Kim!!!
Patio Lanterns and Go For Soda - Awesome !! Good times, good memories !!!
Peter Fredette is one of the best singers to ever come from this beautiful country. All We Are is another great example of his range.
I love that he gives a deeper meaning to the song because everyone always talks about it being an drug and alcohol awareness message
I love the Bass tone in that mix. Basses don’t sound that way anymore. Great hard rock anthem and hitting the highway song!
🔊🤠👍
That bass is awesome
Right, really gives the song an edge that it might not have had without that tone.
Is it a distorted stingray?
@@smeagolmazurenko5238 P bass.
Great bass sound!
I absolutely love this song!
Kim nailed this point blank!
That is one of the best, catchiest songs ever written. First time I heard it I thought it was .38 Special. The vocals sound JUST like them.
The guitar riff is a hook. The chorus is a hook. Even the heavy bass is a hook. This song is loaded with them. If I was a fish, I'd be hiding under the reef. Great song.
That's off the chain!
"Go For Soda" is one of my all-time faves by Kim Mitchell. That could be the anthem. Thanks Boom!
Same here!
Great guy awesome dude
That intro riff is just awesome. Peter has to be one of the best backup singers ever.
I saw Kim in Prince George, BC in 1994.
Unforgettable!

I always assumed it was oat sodas. Can't blame the guy or the record company for marketing the song where they could.

I don’t get why there have not been more people covering it. It is a classic song. 😍
It's a hard song to play. The guitar riff is tricky to get clean
massively underrated guitarist @@trjb1767

Kim and Peter. The dynamic rock duo!
This is my all-time favorite Kim Mitchell song! :) Thank you Boom for this backstory!
So many great tunes on this album. Boom should do one on each track, especially All We Are - or Lager & Ale, or.......
Kim, you are a genius

Thanks for the music Mr Mitchell, especially Universal Juveniles!
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of 1980s wrestling. I'm picturing Hacksaw Jim Duggan waltzing in with this song playing.

Why is this not available anymore???
I love this and been listening to it since the 80’s. Still can’t play the lick. Ugh.
I love how happy is to explain how haphazardly the song came together and admitting to using 80s musical tropes. Great bloke.
Thanks for posting this! One of my absolute favorite songs....from any genre or era! Just a fun jam and great for driving or to have on your jogging playlist.

Peter Fredette was always awesome on vox!

What a killer riff
Love the song. But I love hearing the recording process
You sir are a treasure!
Love your radio station and your RUclips channel and I *LOVE* this song but man you really should get the title of the song correct.....sheesh
