MARIAAAAaaaaaa good morning good morning!! First comment I have seen today :) :) Awesome video to share (you know I was loving this!), and so good to see your name first!
Durian also usually costs about 3$/kg here in Thailand, this year actually I didn't even see a single one for under 4$ though (poor rains last year), so... so we're in the same boat here :)
Wellcome to north sumatera especially to Samosir island in Lake Toba ( the most largest lake in the world). You must come to Medan city ( the city of north Sumatra), the paradise of cullinary, so much delicious food here 🥰
I do so love your dad Joel, when he speaks you can see that he thinks before he speaks to give his honest thoughts, I love that. Overripe durians start to ferment and take on a bitter taste due to the alcohol starting to form. So the ones you ate was spot on in its ripeness - maximum sugar content.
Steven my dude, big morning coffee cheers to you! Very happy to see your name as always. Man, one day we WILL have durian together (the dream spot would be in Penang, just because that's where I found the vendor with the shop named Durian Steven :) haha ok and for other reasons as well).

Joel, so happy to see another fellow American enjoying durian. Durian has gotten such bad rap amongst Westerners. It’s an acquired taste for sure. If you like it, it can be addictive. I am in Texas, dreaming of it every now and then. No wonder it is known as the “King of Fruit”. Just subscribed to your posting. Good luck! Send more durian videos. Still think Malaysia has the best durians.
Hi 8111, we did have some incredible durian in Medan as well, but I think it felt more fun to have them (close to, or feeling close to) in the jungle :)
So good! Slowbro, welcome back! I hope youre doing awesome this week. Hey happy Friday! Hey, do you buy durian at the supermarket or, is there a way to order direct to your house (online?)?

Joel, I know you said not to bother buying durian in Bangkok at this time, but I was at the Minburi market last weekend and couldn't resist. ฿130 for a few small pieces, but still worth it for me. 😅 I asked the vendor where the supply is coming from now and she said it's all from the South, hence the high price. In another few months most of the durian will be from Rayong and Chantaburi. In March "gradoom" "phuangmanee" and "chanee" varieties should be available. "Mon Thong" is usually at the market around mid-April. The price you paid in Indonesia is unbelievably cheap. I was just reading an article in Thai about durian that mentioned general prices. I always thought "mon thong" was expensive, but that's actually cheap compared to "gahn yao" which can fetch up to ฿15,000 for one fruit!!! I thought I knew durian well, but after reading the article I realize I barely know the fruit. Durian in Thailand is divided into six groups. "Gahn yao" (long stem) has its own group, which includes eight varieties. "Chanee" belongs to the "luang" group (กลุ่มลวง), which includes 12 varieties. And "mon thong" (golden pillow) belongs to the "gampan" group (กลุ่มกำปั่น), which has 13 varieties. Adding together all the varieties from the six groups gives an astounding total of 174 varieties! And that's just Thailand. No wonder it's known as the King of Fruits.
174 IS astonishing. I visited a Darien specific shop in Kuala Lumpur that had over 20 varieties, and I thought that was already mind-boggling… well OK it is still amazing that they had over 20 right there on hand, not just in some scientific textbook… but 174!???
End of the ones you’ve mentioned from Thailand, I’ve had four of the five, but I have never heard of KamPun. I wonder if it’s a variation of the word “Kampung” which just means ‘local,’ which is what almost all of em are called in Indonesia, like what you taught me Bahasa and Pha-Saa… Man. So much to be explored on every level, for sure.
Last but not least, from what friends have written in different comments on different videos, it seems that actually Durian is cheaper in the USA even than it is in Thailand this year. Things are just getting out of control so, ….yeah you gotta do what you can, I respect you for making the decision to go for some durian in Minburi :) haha sometimes you just need it!!
@@JoelsTastyRide The name's of the six groups in Thai are: ๑. กลุ่มกบ ๒. กลุ่มลวง ๓. กลุ่มก้านยาว ๔. กลุ่มกำปั่น ๕. กลุ่มทองย้อย ๖. กลุ่มเบ็ดเตล็ด On the word origin/meaning of the groups' names, I'm certain on only groups 3 and 6. If you look at the pics of some of the varieties in that group (for example, กบตาดำ, กบทองคำ, กบน้ำชาย), you'll see the "seeds" are huge; the whole fruit is full of "meat". "Luang" (group 2) can mean to deceive or mislead. Considering that "พูลวง" means a section of durian that contains no fruit, I think that's what the name means. Some varieties produce little/no fruit when young. From the outside it looks like it contains fruit, but on opening there's none. I guess we could call that the "dupe group" in English. 😆 "Gam phan" (group 4) can mean a type of ship (Chinese origin?), but it also means a type of strong box. I know varieties in that group have a relatively thick skin, so if they are hard to open (like a strong box), that would explain the name. Lastly, the "yoy" (ย้อย) in group five, can mean either to droop, or to ooze/trickle. If those varieties are popularly eaten when very soft, then "trickling gold" would be an apt description. And there's my contribution to the useless-trivia file... till the next video, that is. 🤣
Duuuuuude you got that right!!! Haha JK and you also reminded me that Jakarta is called The Big Durian, I had forgotten all about that. So it deserves to have some of the world's best, for sure!!!

When you asked the durian guy about his name, he actually introduced himself just like Americans do: last name/surname first, first name second. His surname is Naibaho and when asked further, he would tell you his first name. It is unfortunate than Naibaho is not fluent in English, because if were, he would answer your questions as thoroughly as he could. If I were you I would hire local guides (which are many on Samosir) or just ordinary local people to show me around
😂 When I toured back in the days in KL they had big signs on the lobby. no durian allowed but they allowed our stinky socks after a match. Go figure. 🤭😱
Best comment :) As is often the case! hahahaha Rene man. Yeah, seriously, a good thing to consider, so many other smelly things, why the bias against something so beautiful and good!
Of course it's cheap, because you buy it in the country where durian comes from. The name durian comes from the word "Duri" in Indonesian and Malay, which when translated into English means "Thorn". So durian is a thorny fruit. So if the best durian in the world is in Indonesia, it's not surprising.
@@JoelsTastyRide .Just like rambutan fruit. The name rambutan comes from the Indonesian and Malaysian word "Rambut" which means "hair" in English. So rambutan is a fruit with hair. I don't know if you have ever eaten rambutan, but there are also rambutans in several countries abroad with the same name, namely rambutan.
Welcome to Indonesia Joel, you have gentle kindheart smile... Try the culinary, and i see you like to cycling please try east Java cycling series event by mainsepeda, cycling to Bromo, Ijen and Dholo are beautiful 👍👍👍👍
What a beautiful message, now THIS is the info I need! Another friend invited me for some competitions on another island, i will remember these (thank you!) - and hope to visit again very soon!!
Oh wow Eric thats awesome :) Hey, you have a good friend! Eric I had forgotten that the nickname for Jakarta is in fact, "The Big Durian!" I havent visited the big city yet but, now Im looking forward to it even more!
Yo yo! Hey GoGuy :) Well... I do hope heaven is a little bit better than this but, haha I will take the positivity and go with it, YES, your comment is a great one, yes this is a little piece of perfection right here (the durian)
bro, i don't think durian ever be a medieval weapon the enemy will happily receive your durian that u throw on them there is even a phrase says "serasa seperti ketiban durian runtuh" (feels like having fallen durian) which mean "you got lucky"
Hey hey! Thanks so much for writing! Well, definitely the sweetest durian is in Thailand (but also the most expensive!) the highest quality is for sure in Malaysia (but again, the price, just crazy!), and Indonesia definitely wins for "The People's Durian!" The price, the abundance, even the perfect size (can have one all to yourself, or even 3!), its just a durian lovers paradise
Joel, it's better for you to open Google translate if you wanna communicate with the vendors. Durian is king of fruit. You can find out the benefit of it. Have great days in Indonesia 🇲🇨❤️🇲🇨
Hi Elly!! The cheapest that I’ve ever seen where I live is 40baht per kg (which would be about 20,000IDR per kg). Normal price here though is about 120b per kg (60,000IDR per kg). So we were very very happy today indeed.
That is jungle collected durian, that's why its so cheap. But the taste and fruit condition really vary and it is rare to find a really good one. Famous variety of durian grown by farmer could cost 100 times more than the jungle one.
You can't be at the middle about durian. Either you hate it very much or love it. Durian medan is known as the most delicious durian in Indonesia. Small but very sweet and creamy.
Haha I think Im with you!!! Hey wow another great bit of teaching today, well yes I DID appreciate it! Ok, now I know it really was special, even in the amazing land of abundance of Indonesia!!
Mariiiiii hi and good morning!!! I hope you are doing great Mari :) Hey I did try to grow durian when I lived in the countryside, they are not easy to grow, they require constant care, and yes like Maria says they also take a loooong time to fruit (I think 8 years before any fruit will grow). They DO grow to be huge and beautiful trees, the bark is very pretty and striking, but yeah its quite the process to care for and grow durian... it makes sense why they're so expensive.
Maria yes! They really can get huge, haha good luck... lets see how it goes :). Yeah I think in 7-8 years though you can get fruit (I tried to grow a few trees before, and that's what the seedling seller told me)
;-D haha! You would need some powerful lungs but, yeah you're quite right. Would be great for slingshot ammo as well! I think Avocado pits are even better (more consistently round), but durian have wayyyyy more seeds per fruit!
Wise words from that policeman slow down on the durian 😅. Durian coma..😂 I went crazy myself with the durian smoothies in the hot Thali weather. I couldn't help myself. I can't wait to come back. Do they provide water to wash hands before & after?
You should enjoy it while you are there. You won't get that price in the big cities in Indonesia. How I envy you 😮. And the durian sellers are so honest. They didn't try to rip you off even though you're a foreigner. I was scammed by durian sellers in Indonesia and Malaysia 😢.
Indonesia is a wonderful country..... it's big country, 1.900.000 KM almost 7 times bigger than Thailand, Malaysia or Philippine,, Japan, even they all are combined still too small for Indonesia size, and biggest archipelago country also so yea Indonesia is unique, also again its 4 most populated country so it's full of diversity,,,, sorry not to be conceited or big talker or smth bt just saying,,,,,,,,, btw hope you enjoy your time here in Indonesia, im from papua, hailed from north maluku, papua is also beautiful and diverse so come down here also if you hv time

Hi Dripping!! I rode my bicycle there for many days, I felt OK. I wouldn’t say extremely safe, but also, I’ve been many places that felt more dangerous.
Hey Julian!! Hope youre doin well today! For me, that's definitely the cheapest, the time before this one I think I had one durian for 40baht a KG, which is about 3 times more than this one today!!!

Nice video 👍⭐️
Thanks for the visit and, lifestyle travel, I hope youre having a truly AWESOME January so far!!!
I love Durian my best friend from Jakarta had me try it smells bad but tastes so good... You can't judge a book by its cover!!!
Oh wow Eric thats awesome :) Hey, you have a good friend! Eric I had forgotten that the nickname for Jakarta is in fact, "The Big Durian!" I havent visited the big city yet but, now Im looking forward to it even more!
i also like white durian like that it taste little bitter but sweet like bitterness in chocolate
Haha Joel looking like he's just died and went to heaven 😅
Yo yo! Hey GoGuy :) Well... I do hope heaven is a little bit better than this but, haha I will take the positivity and go with it, YES, your comment is a great one, yes this is a little piece of perfection right here (the durian)
Best reaction of eating durian from western ..
Java!! Great to see you, cheers fellow Durian lover. Have a great day!!
in bali you can get 20 durians for $9... 😅
Bali sangat mahal, saya rasa tidak mungkin. Kualitas durian sumatra jauh lebih baik. Kamu harus mencobanya ^-^ ❤
nah... its way more expensive
thats hands gesture at 2.50 bro...respect...
Try going to the Pasean Pasuruan market, East Java. The cheapest, most expensive durian is only 30 thousand, the largest is the size of a coconut
Denmas! Amazing recommendation! Java is very far from here but, that's a thing to remember for next time.
bro, i don't think durian ever be a medieval weapon
the enemy will happily receive your durian that u throw on them
there is even a phrase says "serasa seperti ketiban durian runtuh" (feels like having fallen durian) which mean "you got lucky"
THAT has to be one of the coolest sayings :) And, I also appreciate your durian-loving logic. This is an awesome comment!!
So which better.. Durian thai, malay, or Indonesia..
In Indonesia u just visit Sumatera,, try java bali kalimantan Sulawesi n other islands..
Durian anywhere in Indonesia always cheap😋and yummy
I have yet to try it since I've been in southeast Asia. Only the candy. 😂😅
I thiiiiiiiiiink it is time to change this Walt. From what I gather you've been here for about 2 years now!!
off and on the last two year and two passports. LOL
@@JoelsTastyRide
village durian is the best durian like any other expensive durian i believe
I think you might be right, these were easily on the level of ANY durian Ive had, from any vendor, no matter the price point!!! Crazy
Those are so expensive here I want to get some and grow myself some from the seeds
Have you seen how big a Durian tree gets? Lol and it takes like 15 years to fruit.❤ good luck friend! Let me know how it goes.
Yeah I think in 7-8 years though you can get fruit (I tried to grow a few trees before, and that's what the seedling seller told me)
Durian. Adalah. Makanan. Terenak. Didunia
Thank you for the vocab updates, these are great! And thanks for taking the time to watch. See you for another video on Monday!!
If you had a seed spitting contest someone could seriously get hurt. 🤕
;-D haha! You would need some powerful lungs but, yeah you're quite right. Would be great for slingshot ammo as well! I think Avocado pits are even better (more consistently round), but durian have wayyyyy more seeds per fruit!
When I used to visit Thailand the locals said Durian Smell like hell, Taste like Heaven...I love Durian😋
Yum, yum 😋
Yahoo hi Nikki!! ALways good to see you!
Wise words from that policeman slow down on the durian 😅. Durian coma..😂
I went crazy myself with the durian smoothies in the hot Thali weather. I couldn't help myself. I can't wait to come back. Do they provide water to wash hands before & after?
"My camera needs 'Smell-O-Vision!" Great!! 55555!
Donnnnnnnn hahaha man, great to see you enjoying this, Im actually editing our second durian vid from Indo right now!
U must try Steamed Durian Seed. 👍
Saya berasal dari Sumatera, sudah biasa makan durian bersama nasi atau ketan😂
Good morning Kucing :) I like your name! Thanks for the support
You should enjoy it while you are there. You won't get that price in the big cities in Indonesia. How I envy you 😮. And the durian sellers are so honest. They didn't try to rip you off even though you're a foreigner. I was scammed by durian sellers in Indonesia and Malaysia 😢.
👍👍👍
Kawthoolei, awesome!!! Great to see you :) Blessings and love, hope today is good for you.
By now I can imagine smelling this Durian. 😂
Evaaaa hahaha that is the purpose of this video, to win all people who are 50-50 over to try durian (and fall in love with it!)
@@JoelsTastyRide555 now I belong to the fancy and became a virtual Durian deliciounist.
@@JoelsTastyRidethank you for the invention of the scent phone.
Saya menghabiskan banyak makan durian setelah itu saya ngeplay sperti melayang diudara.
Hello, and good morning to you!! Terimah Kasih
@@JoelsTastyRide sama-sama bang joel terima kasih sudah berkunjung ke negara kami.

That’s pretty cool, thank you for taking the time to write, OK, so I was lucky to see this at the market today
Indonesia is a wonderful country..... it's big country, 1.900.000 KM almost 7 times bigger than Thailand, Malaysia or Philippine,, Japan, even they all are combined still too small for Indonesia size, and biggest archipelago country also so yea Indonesia is unique, also again its 4 most populated country so it's full of diversity,,,, sorry not to be conceited or big talker or smth bt just saying,,,,,,,,, btw hope you enjoy your time here in Indonesia, im from papua, hailed from north maluku, papua is also beautiful and diverse so come down here also if you hv time
there's red durian in Borneo if you are truly feeling adventurous 😊
Rory!! I have been to Borneo and I have tried a red one :) also a pink one. I’ve seen photos of a purple one even but I’ve never tried that…
Durian is addictive, I'm surprised some foreigners don't like durian.

someday I want to eat some durian with Joel Bruner!! I had some cookies that were supposely durian flavored. They smelled terrible but tasted good.. which was probably the closest thing to durian they actually were . LOL
Hahah My dude!!! Benny man what a message. Haha the Durian cookies?! Who knows why these companies think people would go for it... but in the case of fresh durian, with you?! WELL, it would surely be my honor. Thank you for always writing, supporting, taking time to cheer even!!

Sinbad, you and us BOTH, for sure :) I couldn't believe it.
Not Turian but Durian, Joel !
Hey Nathan! Yeah I live in Thailand so this is where I learned about Durian (and in Thailand its Tu-Rian)
Maem duren maseh,,,mantaps
some people said Medan equivalent with Gotham city, you could easily lost your car tire
Hi Dripping!! I rode my bicycle there for many days, I felt OK. I wouldn’t say extremely safe, but also, I’ve been many places that felt more dangerous.
This fruit will addicted u when u eat this after fourth times..
FollowThePath, I love your name... the path to durian? Addiction to all fruits?!
You know what. Durian is king of fruit. As a King they have a lot to tell you about.
Mandra, for sure!!! Did you know there are 174 classified varietals?? (I didn’t, but now I know… 😂🤯🥳)

Hi Sheila!!! Glad to see you enjoying this, hey, yes, if you get a chance, it’s a pretty wild experience, considering it’s “just a fruit,” haha 🙏🏽🤘🏽

Hey Julian!! Hope youre doin well today!
For me, that's definitely the cheapest, the time before this one I think I had one durian for 40baht a KG, which is about 3 times more than this one today!!!
