Never been a big fan of Irani as a player or a person, so to see the look on his face after being bowled by that grubber was priceless. He left Lancs under a cloud and was really fired up, you could tell that from his bowling but he and his team where humiliated. I have to say though Crawley was plum lbw on nought, but his excellent 66 held our innings together or we might have been bowled out of a similar score to Essex's pathetic 57.
Well to see Peter Such bowled first ball for 0 at the end there completely summed up the freak show this match became. This will always be known as the Chapple and Martin Final. Probably the two most deadliest balls from Lancashire's bowlers were the ones to Rollins and Such.
Always a shame to see Ronnie fail against Lancs, never has there been such a bitter man in cricket! Great bowling, making use of the conditions. Bully's spell vastly underrated
boomsville I hated Irani when he was playing. And having had the misfortune to read his 'no boundaries' book, I hated him even more. He is so bitter towards Lancashire, and tons of other people in the game. Here was a guy who really thought he was better than he actually was. No wonder he never got a game at Old Trafford, he wasn't good enough to mop the dressing room floor in that great Lancs team of the 90s.
BlueTrueScouse couldn't agree more. I read some extracts from it and it was painful. Nothing was his fault. Decent county pro, never an international cricketer really, woeful presenter. The videos on here of him getting stuff wrong on talksport are brilliant
@112234462557235865171 What pissed me off in his book that he said when he moved to Essex he wanted the Lancashire players to see on teletext the runs and wickets he was getting for them! What an egomaniac. Back then, Atherton, Fairbrother and co were too busy winning trophies to give a shite what this Old Trafford reject was doing. It was common knowledge many Lancs players couldn't stand him, and Nasser Hussian also slaughtered Irani in his autobiography.
I remember watching the game on the day and seeing the smile from Rollins when he was bowled, which said something like "What could I do about that ball"?
None of the comments here mention the dreadful pitch served up at Lords for this final. Whatever team you support, you don't want to go to a showcase final like this and see batsmen unable to hit the ball off the square. I was at this match myself and to witness a quality player like Graham Gooch struggling to hit anything from Martin, Austin and Chapple was really sad. The only Essex batsman who got himself out was Robinson; the rest of them were victims of the pitch.
As a Lancs fan I don't care as we won! Our batsmen (Crawley particulary) scrambled us to 186 and our bowlers did the rest. You seem to think Martin, Chapple and Austin shouldn't have troubled an over the hill Gooch so weren't good bowlers yet all played international Cricket, And it was swing, as well as seam, that destroyed hapless Essex, our bowlers simply got more out of the pitch. It was a good job we batted first as the game could have been over in a couple of hours!
BlueTrueScouse "an over the hill Gooch"? take a look at the batting averages for 1996; Gooch 17 matches 30 innings 1944 runs, highest score 201 average 67.03 with 8 hundreds 6 fifties. I rest my case!
sct353 Yes, no arguing with his stats but he was 43 year old, at that age you are well over the hill as a sportsman. Goochie retired less than a year after this game. That says it all.
sct353 What a bitter post. The wicket was poor but exactly the same for both sides. We thrashed Essex because we handled the conditions much better. Lancashire is a much bigger club than Essex anyway.
TheProd1991 Sorry guys, I'm not trying to take anything away from Lancashire as for sure they deserved to win on the day (and while we're here, also skittled Essex for 20 in the County Championship last season - another fine performance!). So well done Lancashire. My point was merely that as a One Day Showcase Final spectacle, the state of the pitch meant a poor day's cricket for paying spectators; not a fair contest between bat and ball. I felt none of the previous comments on here mentioned this. I sat through the entire Lancashire innings and it was hardly exciting stuff (compare this to the recent excellent England vs. NZ One Day series). btw; quote from Paul Pritchard in the 1996 Wisden Cricket Monthly magazine; "We feel that many of us could not have done much about the balls that got us out, and we believe that if you sat the Lancashire lads down, they'd tell you they've never bowled better". Hope that's a fair summary.
I was there as a Lancashire fan but sat very close to the mainly Essex section. I recall just how cock a hoop the Essex supporters were inbetween innings after their side knocked us over for what most believed was an under par score and how they now should 'win with plenty'. After we destroyed their side when we bowled to win with ease all you suddenly got off Essex fans was bitter comments like 'rubbish game' 'total waste of money' 'disgusting wicket' 'hang the groundsman' etc etc.
@@marksmith7460 He wasn't. He toured England with Pakistan that summer and Steve Elworthy was his replacement as overseas player although he didn't play in this game.
Born and bred in Lancashire and proud of it as well

Am a Lancashire supporter but why Irani as a person?
@@manuelodabashian1089 Read his 'no boundaries' book and it tells you everything you need to know about this person.
We had him at a presentation night as a guest speaker and he wasn't very pleasant . So I agree seeing him trudge off brought a smile to my face
How good was Hegg's catch to remove Hussein?! Peter Martin and Chapple bowling beautifully
It made a change for the team batting first to win the September final. I can't remember the last team before that to bat first and win.
John Crawley should have received MoM for his batting masterclass

Willey was a trigger finger with Illot but wasn't going to give out his old mucker, Goochie.

Showpony think covers it! That an idiot!
Prat
Shame Essex didn't have fifteen batsmen so Bully Austin could have had the wickets he deserved.
The 90s belonged to Lancs. So many great Lords days out
Thanks for the upload!
Brilliant bowling
Swing bowling win for Lancashire
I remember watching the game on the day and seeing the smile from Rollins when he was bowled, which said something like "What could I do about that ball"?
Why didn’t Warren Hegg and Glen Chappell play more for England?
They were always biased toward Surrey and Essex back in the day.
how good is Hegg's catch to get Nassar out??? seriously how did he not get 100+ caps for England?
Fantastic one day batsman too.
He didnt bat well enough to be an England candidate then !!
Wow how the one day game has moved on.

Typical of southerners tbh lol.
Twenty cricket or leagues destroy all real cricket entertainment
No Akram in this match ?
He was playing in the test series for Pakistan against England in 96.
No
Yes he was 4th change, not needed
@@marksmith7460 He wasn't. He toured England with Pakistan that summer and Steve Elworthy was his replacement as overseas player although he didn't play in this game.
