Reminds me of a comedic quote I picked up somewhere, "I'm not saying we should kill all the stupid people, I'm merely suggesting we take the warning labels off everything and let the problem work itself out."
I'll never forget that movie 'God on Trial'. It was amazing. I remember working really late that night. Getting home really late. Then it was about 2:00am at night, and I was mindlessly tired. But this movie was so good it prevented me from going to sleep until 2 hours later. I had to get up again at 7:00. But it was worth it!
I vividly remember my last prayer of divine healing/protection. I was suffering from glaucoma, I was going momentarily blind in my only good eye, I was in horrible pain. I asked Jesus to heal me. At the same time I was taking eye drops and 2 pills of pain meds twice a day. My vision ended up being damaged. That was when I first begun to go away from my faith. It was a good thing I went to modern medicine instead of Jesus or I would have surely gone blind.
This, I think, is one of the best programmes you have done. I suppose I think that because you ask so many of the questions I ask ... To those of us who have set aside the delusions of religion, the answers to these questions are perfectly obvious. Unfortunately, persuading all our religious friends of this is a challenge which lies ahead.
Many years ago, I was acquainted with a young man that had serious mental problems, and who became involved in a 4 Square Pentecostal church. The woman pastor had a huge influence on this young man. He eventually became convinced that he had God's power working through him. I watched one evening as he climbed to the podium, and as he began to speak, it became obvious that there was something quite wrong. Someone approached him about stepping down. He yelled for God to send fire down out of Heaven to surround and protect him. It did not happen. It was at that moment that I watched a human being mentally disintegrate. It was an incredibly disturbing thing to have witnessed. Faith. Potentially one of the most dangerous mental aberrations I can think of. This young man later died. There is no God. Faith is the ultimate shell-game.
I’m going back thru your videos and this one really hits home. Oct 9 2009 my stepmom, who was very religious, posted a bible verse on FB and an hour later her and my dad were murdered.. I’ve struggled since then
another great show, thanks. glad you hit number one! I remember a news story on Fox news a few years ago, where an old woman was in her car and got caught in flood waters, she said she prayed “lord save me” then she said “but the water keep rising” so she called 911 and first responders saved her… and she said “praise the lord.” I found the marines call interesting because I remember during the invasion I was very religious, but during my next two deployments I became an atheist. but overall most of my fellow marines that I talked religion with seemed to be atheist.
Jason Gordon while it is true there are lots of religious people in the military, much like I was when I went in. It is not true that when the bombs are exploding that everyone craws back to the crutch of faith. Just about every other day we got Indirect Fire (IDF) rockets and such. and oddly enough one of the things I thought about while waiting for it to end was the very idea of divine protection. I often wondered if some people actually thought the hand of god was going to catch or block a rocket that was otherwise going to kill them. But the point being the atheist were still atheist.
I was driving through Middlesboro, Kentucky the other day and saw that the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus' Name had the following message on the sign in front of their church: "Snake collection for sale--$14.99 or best offer."
God will heal him or he'll die because it was just his time. So he'll live or he'll die. Seems their god is indistinguishable from one that doesn't exist at all.
I always argue with my cousins about this type of thing like when somebody is kidnapped and they found them or they died either way it doesnt matter but I say "Hey I got a question; They are all thanking god for finally finding them right? Well why couldnt he just tell them where they were before all the horrible stuff?" There answer is always :god works in mysterious ways... and there in a better place." It is so stupid.
Seth - a word or two on "God on Trial" (2008). First of all, an excellent film - one made by the BBC & WGBH Boston as part of the "Masterpiece" collection for PBS. Secondly, to be specific - they put God on trial not so much for what he had forced the Jews to endure, but for his failure to hold up his end of the covenant between himself and his "chosen people" wherein he was supposed to protect them in return for their worship of (and faith in) him.
I can't be the only one who feels bad for the poor snakes. They get yanked out of their nice dark hidey holes, woken up violently, and handled carelessly by what are most likely loud people. If anyone did that to me, i'd bite them too.
Only a fool would have no fear of something that could kill you. The pastor who refused medical treatment and died wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
I have a dear lady friend who exemplifies the battered partner mentality you so often see in religious circles. She's gone through some things that nobody should ever have to endure, and while all of us would be wondering where the hell the god she so fervently believes in was during those unspeakable ordeals, she maintains it must be punishment for some sin, even if she can't actually name it.
It's almost as if gawd can only do that which mankind can't such as creating the universe but incapable of doing what mankind can, such as build an ark or feed the world.
Not really relevant to the topic at hand, but I just wanted to say it. You kind of have the same speaing inflections as my Baptist Preacher grandfather. I find this very awesome.
This thank god thing is getting really annoying. My mom thanked "god" for passing her real estate exam and I corrected her stating "do not give anyone else credit, you did that, you and no one else."
Let's say that there was a church somewhere whose pastor said he had a vision and god told him in the vision that there were a few verses which were revealed to be his highest commandments and that all believers should follow. Psalms 18:30, "As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him." and Psalm 41:2, "The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be blessed on the earth; You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies." And Proverbs 29:25, "The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe." And god also told the pastor that, as a show of faith and trust in god's highest commandments, the congregation was to regularly hold games of Russian Roulette during their Sunday services. After all, god said that "whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe", and "will preserve him and keep him alive". Would anyone say that we should respect these kinds of religious views, simply because they are so fervently held? Would any credible media organization thank them for allowing them to observe their amazing demonstrations of faith, and that they were "honored" to be allowed such unique access to the pastor and his followers and give context to their methods of worship? How would we deal with something like this? Does anyone really believe that anything goes, as long as it has a religious context or basis in belief? By the rationale of people like those at the National Geographic channel, everything is to be respected and honored if it has even the thinnest of faith veneers. While snake handling is an extreme case, it shows just how far over the edge that religious thinking can take a human being.
story about the pastor who got beat to death. all i can say is - Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through! actually - the correct Meat Loaf song that this reminded me of was Wasted Youth, but it's the same thing....
What will it take for people to realize that man only wrote holy text books in a time when people were very uneducated about a lot of things that can explain the natural world so they created gods . I can't say that no god exist, but I can say that anytime man has written something, chances are that god doesn't exist because it was in perspective of their imagination.
I find divine protection is a religious tactic of mind control. When something goes wrong they would call it "God's plan." I would hear that church is the safest place and you have protection from the devil. Then next Sunday the preacher would say that the devil lurks in the church corrupting your mind. I'm glad that I smartened up and got away from this nonsense.
I know some may find it funny. But I actually became really sad from the idea of someone trying to shield themselves from bullets with a Bible with no effect. I doubt he actually believed it would protect him, probably just an instinctive reaction. But still. One can't help of pondering the tragic symbolism there. No one but other humans and sometimes other animals there to protect us from harm.
About the question on life insurance here 52:30. Yes, there are companies that will insure the minister he just probably wasn't going to be able to afford them on his minister income. There are different type of insurance companies. You have the preferred or standard market, high risk or non-standard market, specialty markets, etc. Each company and market will price the policy based on the risk. The higher the risk the more you pay (e.g. young drivers pay double or triple for auto insurance than older/maturer drivers). It gets more complicated but that's kind of the jist of it.
The insult inherent in giving a god credit for human endeavour is not just in ignoring those humans involved, but in the implicit suggestion that they were simply empty vessels for that divine will, despite all their years of study and training, their accumulated skill, their intellectual capacity in exercising that skill, their hard and patient work, and the passion and belief they invest in that work. Sheer self-centred ignorance!
"Thy Will Be Done." Those are the words of the lord's prayer, and, as pointed out by Robert Heinlein in his novel, Job: A Comedy of Justice, "In that prayer you invite Him to do His worst. The perfect masochist." Yahweh can lay ANYTHING on ANYONE who subscribes to that prayer (or not!), and he skates on it because it's HIS WILL ... or his ball, his bat and his game. He can divinely protect you or not, and as a believing, practicing christian, You Have NO Recourse. Charming, no? No, I don't think so, either ... but then, I am an atheist.
I like the $5 bet. And a dead guy doesn't have to pay you, both of you put $5 each into a box and whoever dies first, the other guy gets the money in the box. :P
I actually knew a woman who didn't use a seatbelt or require her four children to use one because of her faith in God. I told her God gave her the seatbelts, and then painted a picture of what it's like to set the table for dinner and accidentally put down the wrong number of plates for weeks or months. She started belting her kids.
its funny because if you actually believe the bible passage it clearly says to lay hands on him and he will recover. if laying hands on him doesnt mean administer treatment you dont know how to read

I am less influenced by "the dead pastor via snake bite" and more influenced by the 10 year old girl who was kidnapped [and the MANY "prayers for her safe return"], but was found killed the next day. I understand that the "pray for the situation" type of thing is a "cut & paste" style of reaction by religious people, . . . but most of the time the "prayers" do nothing for the situation itself. This just happened this week in my community and now a family is grieving. Oh, . . . as a side note, . . . Westboro Baptist Church is going to be there to picket the service.
I think people don’t think about it too deep cause they are scared to. They are too scared to see how absurd it is because to do that makes one question the validity of religion. Because if u doubt it’s true than eternal damnation awaits. The fear of hell is so great that most people cannot see the irrationality of it.
Excellent show. "God is an unfit parent". Classic. Off to post on my facebook page...a few of my "Battered Bride of Christ" connects may un-friend me :p
If you have a god who is VERY impressed with "a person's level of faith", . . . wouldn't this pastor actually BE "in his god's favor for his faith"? I have seen MANY christians talking about "how foolish this pastor was", . . . . but why aren't they impressed with his "faith"? Why wouldn't this "god" be, . . . thus saved his life, like the verse claimed? Rhetorical questions...

Can't wait for next week's episode. I'm an ex-Muslim atheist and actually study in an Islamic university. Oh the things i have to endure.
Why do I get the feeling that you have a talent for understatement?
TTA rocks! Thanks for all your great work Seth!

Thank you Seth for saying what many of us have been thinking!
God did nothing because he couldn't. God would have to exist in order to be able to do anything. God is a creation of mankind.
Congrats on being number 1!
Reverend Ted Haggard really liked "handling the snake" too, if you know what I'm sayin'
I'm not surprised if the honorable Rev . Hovind is doing some snake - charming in prison, too.
David Smith
ooooh snap
The snake whisperer
Loved that "God on Trial" part. Catching up on TTA, discovered this channel a year ago.... can't get enough.

Awesome! Area code 419 is northwest Ohio and I live there! Woo hoo!!! I feel so all alone here as an atheist in a small, rural town here.
Meetups.org, find yourself the nearest skeptics group.
The nearest one is at least an hour from where I live :p I'm active in the Mansfield group which is still an hour from where I am lol
Emily Bisignano Well, you're not totally alone: I volunteer to be your online, atheist friend.
Emily Bisignano We're here for ya. Hang in there. Spread the word of the Unholy Trinity! ;-)
I can see how Seth managed to get an entire chapter of his "Sacred Cows" book out of snake handlers.
I’m going back thru your videos and this one really hits home. Oct 9 2009 my stepmom, who was very religious, posted a bible verse on FB and an hour later her and my dad were murdered.. I’ve struggled since then
Hi, where ya from?
Divine protection statistically indistinguishable from no protection at all.
another great show, thanks. glad you hit number one!

Wow, reminds me of what the religious would often say, "There are no atheists in the foxholes".
Jason Gordon

"Evolution in process..." My thoughts during the story about the snake handlers^^
Sparrows are nice.
I was driving through Middlesboro, Kentucky the other day and saw that the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus' Name had the following message on the sign in front of their church: "Snake collection for sale--$14.99 or best offer."
poor snakes, it's not fair to drag them out of their environment and force them to bite.
God will heal him or he'll die because it was just his time.
So he'll live or he'll die.
Seems their god is indistinguishable from one that doesn't exist at all.
Very good point Seth why didn't god intervene.
I always argue with my cousins about this type of thing like when somebody is kidnapped and they found them or they died either way it doesnt matter but I say "Hey I got a question; They are all thanking god for finally finding them right? "Handling the snake... It's indescribable" someone please tell me I'm not the only person who sniggered a little at this.
Happy Susquicentennial, Seth!
👍

God... the dead beat Dad
I don't know what the big deal is. I handle MY "snake" all the time. ;)
remember to milk it atleast 3 times a day so it's not poisonous.
Your snake doesn't have teeth, LOL
It makes me wonder: why do people keep forgiving god? Also, good line: God, the unfit parent.
I can't be the only one who feels bad for the poor snakes. They get yanked out of their nice dark hidey holes, woken up violently, and handled carelessly by what are most likely loud people. If anyone did that to me, i'd bite them too.
Me too. Snake: Not this shit again🙄*bites the guy* Dumbass😒
I'm wondering, if they die of a snake bite, do they go to hell?
Only a fool would have no fear of something that could kill you. The pastor who refused medical treatment and died wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
"the battered bride of christ" ...yup
I feel sorry for those snakes in that miserable environment.
Its all about that saying, "god helps those who help themselves", almost like you don't even need god in the first place.
It's almost as if gawd can only do that which mankind can't such as creating the universe but incapable of doing what mankind can, such as build an ark or feed the world.
Amber Arizmendi. God is good
Divine protection isn't about protecting you from harm in life, it's about protecting your soul from hell in the afterlife! ...or so I've been told.
While listening to this podcast I had the "Dumb ways to die" song playing in the background.
LOL! I was hearing it in the back of my mind while listening to this!
The verse about snake handling wasn't in the older manuscripts
This is why the darwin awards where created
the only time divine protection works when i play TFT. Imagine that! :)
The silence of your deity of choice is always taken as reinforcing feedback for your behaviour of choice. How can you lose?

Poor fella, he's gonna have to look all over hell for that Guy to get his five bucks.

anyone elese gets the TIC TAC Ministery commercial on this vid ... dam youtube irony

Where is the numbers on my hair.
the funny thing is ...they r not handling the snake ...just holding the middle and jumping around
I actually knew a woman who didn't use a seatbelt or require her four children to use one because of her faith in God. I told her God gave her the seatbelts, and then painted a picture of what it's like to set the table for dinner and accidentally put down the wrong number of plates for weeks or months. Headline News: World's first talking snake. Tonight at 11
Guy won a "Darwin Award" - plain and simple. It's hard for me to have too much sympathy - except maybe, for his immediate family.
its funny because if you actually believe the bible passage it clearly says to lay hands on him and he will recover. if laying hands on him doesnt mean administer treatment you dont know how to read
that passage in Mark was a later addition so snake-handlers are doubly deluded
excellent comments all! lol
mama says stupid is as stupid does
Wasn't this show going to be about "ex muslims"???
Also, to be clear, rattlesnakes and copperheads are 'venomous', not 'poisonous'.
'God' gave this dude 9 chances to learn from his mistake. On the tenth he was like, you know what? Fuck you. You're beyond help and you're never going to learn.
When i heard of this, all i could think was. I hope he didnt pass on the idiot gene. And in comes his son who wants to do the exact same thing... -.- Darwin awards.
*+frededison* natural selection.
That's Gods favorite show a billion ways to die.Earth is his reality show.
The god is not great. Let us all worship chocolate cake.
Even better, the ending of Mark 16:9-20 which includes these passages about handling snakes and drinking poison is left out of the earliest manuscripts. They are frauds, added later.
ARKANSAS! :D
Owning a bible should be illegal. Wdyt?
I am less influenced by "the dead pastor via snake bite" and more influenced by the 10 year old girl who was kidnapped [and the MANY "prayers for her safe return"], but was found killed the next day. I understand that the "pray for the situation" type of thing is a "cut & paste" style of reaction by religious people, . . . but most of the time the "prayers" do nothing for the situation itself. This just happened this week in my community and now a family is grieving.
Oh, . . . as a side note, . . . Westboro Baptist Church is going to be there to picket the service.
Exactly right, god is an unfit parent 😮
"God don't intervene", but that's bs according to the bible.
I mean it’s sad Seth but the guy was bit like ten times. I’m sorry he was killed and I hope his family is ok.
they should have all of their children taken away from them and given a safe and saner life,it's child abuse to teach what they believe to children.
Why can't we stop making stupid (snake) people famous?
Because it is a car wreck you just have to rubberneck.
Jamie Coot died for our sins.
He died for his sins...against the snakes.
I think people don’t think about it too deep cause they are scared to. They are too scared to see how absurd it is because to do that makes one question the validity of religion. Because if u doubt it’s true than eternal damnation awaits. The fear of hell is so great that most people cannot see the irrationality of it.
Also, why do they pray for life? Why not pray for death? Puts them in heaven sooner!
Bible's says u go in hell if you cummit suicide. Guess the writers realised that problem.
Yeah, but you could have someone else do it. Gotta love loopholes
GodWorksOut Yeah ur right.
just like that second to last caller geriant said why do any of them who believe in heaven were a seatbelt?
TheLowten Yes! Why not be willing to go this place as soon as possible?
Excellent show. "God is an unfit parent". Classic.
Off to post on my facebook page...a few of my "Battered Bride of Christ" connects may un-friend me :p
this show reminds me of:
ruclips.net/video/3lHbpclM36M/видео.html
all i have to say is, "i lost the game"
Jamie Coots looks a bit like Matt Dillahunty. He's his evil twin
Evil?
or, rather, not evil...
Mandalore863
Probably not, ignorant and perhaps foolish.
that, too.
Either way I found that interesting
There is one short and simple answer to all this is that THERE IS NO GOD PERIOD.
Because according to their "logic"... he died, so by definition his faith was lacking, or they will just say it was his time to claim his "reward." You can't reason with people like that.
Indeed. Good point.
God's protection is a LIE
