mBot S.T.E.M. Educational Robot - Great intro to robotics?

- I was intrigued when I first saw the affordable mBot educational robot. But does this product deliver what a "kid's first robot" needs to actually teach them something?

My wild guess will be that this guy is the only one in the LMG smart enough to make this robot work, and that is why he is in this video
That's actually true for the most part
*****
they may also have too much money to care about little details
+blox117 yup linus is a noob 4 anything which is not gigabit ethernet connections
Luke should be able to do it as well.
Eugene InLaw This is made for kids.... I'm pretty sure everybody can make the robot work...
Seeing Taran was a nice surprise. Great review and nice integration with the advertisement. Linus needs to take tips for the transition and relation to the content with the advertisement. Bring more Taran!
i'm enjoying taran way on doing review. :)
Steven Kistler I really liked taran for this video too. I think it's because it looks like he was genuinely interested in what the product was. Hopefully they get more robotics gear and he'll review it.
Steven Kistler Agree.. Taran did great. ;)
Steven Kistler I agree, Taran did a great job. Personally I like him better than Luke. Btw, what kind of name is Taran anyway? Sounds like a super villain's name.
He is on techquickie on few vids
WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE (Not LinusMediaGroup) You subscribers. What's wrong to see another guy? Stop being so fu overretarted. He's one of them who making this RUclips channel togheter with Linus and Luke,as well as it is, as I notice Linus team can this with the quality of the videos.
It's probably because Taran is one of those guys you can't help but want to punch in the face. He reminds me of my senior college roomate who was in the oragami club, literally slept on the street during broad daylight and spoke japanese. I think people call them weirdos or nerds.
Negnav123 nice england
Negnav123 "overretarted"
Lol.
"overretarted".
topkek
Taran is a lot better at this then I remember in the past. Very smooth and enjoyable review.
The Lego Mindstorms are miles better than this. I had the NXT when it first came out, and you can build a bunch of stuff with the parts and just the preloaded code. The sensors also work way better. The newest version (EV3) is a lot more advanced, comes with new parts, and you can build 17 different things with the stock instructions. It's a lot more kid-friendly, too. Expensive, but 100% worth it.
***** I can see your point, but mindstorms, for me at least, is just way too expensive. Im not willing to pay over 200$ for lego
My school got lego mindstorm, FLL as a program. You may not want to pay 250 bux if so that product aint for you- you get what you pay for chalmers enjoy it atleast..
Ultimate Wafflez You dont pay for the Lego, you pay for an extremly diversly usable microcomputer that can even be programmed with C, or even object-oriented with Java.
Its waay more then "Lego", and way more then a toy.
***** I'm sitting in the FLL Asia Pacific arena right now... :D
I preferred VEX robotics. I don't mean VEX IQ, I mean VEX
Next to Linus, Taran is the best presenter
RatioOfOne lies, just lies.
***** #TeamNickyV
RatioOfOne #teamluke
***** Luke sometimes stumble on his words.
***** Taran is awkward on camera, but is much more eloquent and is far better at reading out the script than Luke
Well I have to say Taran was a really cool host. He did a awesome job.
I may get that aimbot, it looks cool
I would strongly recommend a Lego Mindstorms because the feds diversity and build and program variation. I'm speaking from experience from mentoring the little ones n programming and building with Lego Mindstorms
Dadric Riggs Which language does it use?
Navhkrin it uses a block programming interface though you can use c through third party software
RandomVideos No object oriented programming avaible?
i would try lego mindstorms instead it is far superior to the mbot and easier to use also its lego so there are no cration boundaries
This guy is the best host LTT ever had. Good clear voice, nice review and flow. Good work !
I really liked the review and is really refreshing see new faces (sorta :P) and new type of stuff on the channel. I totally approve this kind or review and I can't wait to see another one like this. Great job!
I like Taran. Let's have more of him!
Taran seems a much better host for technical stuff like robotics or videos which have an advanced nature to them. He seems pretty confident and certainly looks pretty knowledgeable
Taren did a great job withe the video, it seamed much more professional then usual
abanoub tawdrous I agree with you but come on, don't you know the difference between then and than?
33ro0 woops...
33ro0 /rolleyes
What a smooth speaking host. Great in-depth review Taran.
More Taran as a host, really well done video and enjoy the more technical maker gear!
I totally agree with you Taran on getting much better robotics kits. I am currently pursuing an engineering degree, and in our first year, our project design class required us to use a VEX robotics kit to address the "problem" we were given. While the VEX and LEGO mindstorms seem more "complicated"... they really aren't. We used a proprietary language meant for these robots (RobotC), which is just basically C. Super simple. I believe the mBot makes it harder for kids to learn because of the graphical interface, it just doesn't seem as intuitive. Heck, get your kid an arduino uno instead.
That was a really good review. Thanks Taran!
100% YES to more robotic videos and an absolute yes to you presenting and hosting more videos. You are animated and engaging with your speech and explanations
very nice review Taran. keep those coming!
Great video Taran you are a great reviewer on these type of in depth products!
Great job Taran! Great video, can't wait for more!
Dude Taran, all of your videos are extremely concise and informative. I especially appreciate that you don't break the info stream constantly to make useless and cringeworthy jokes like *cough* some other hosts. Keep up the good work dude, seriously.
Wonderful video Taren, really enjoyed it hope to see you present some more
Yes, teach us Professor Factass!
Taran is one hardcore thug.
Great video!
Great review Taran. Really enjoyed it.
Taran killed it on this review. Awesome job
Good job, Taran. Loved the review!
Love it when you do a video not Linus! Please make more of you 😀
Awesome post actually looking forward for those reviews of other better bots and the host seems very informative he seems to have literally debugged all the flows and cons keep it up man *thumbs up*
Great vid Taran, i am looking forward to seeing more videos form you.
I think you were great. Honestly, I didn't feel the absence of Linus in this video. And that's saying a lot. Keep up the good work and hope to see you again.
You are a great host! Keep'em coming!
Hey LTT/Taran, nice job on switching up the hosting more - Taran you did an awesome job - more please! xD
Noice video Taran. Love the format and good info
I did vex and lego robotics in highschool. It was very fun building for each competition!
Great job Taran! Awesome review! It's great to see the whole team involved in making/hosting videos. Sure I enjoy Linus and Luke, but sometimes they might need a break. A few videos from the rest of the team just adds a little more perspective to the channel.
I enjoyed the video! Keep it up LinusMediaGroup!!!
I helped my son assemble and program a new mBot that he got last week. We had none of the issues that the author of this video had with setting up or using the software to program the bot. Assembly was straightforward as well. I agree that they will run into the limits of this robot pretty quickly, but it's a good start for the $50 price. FWIW, I helped them program the three modes that the default program performed so that they could get experience with the sensors and motors.
Not bad this guy sure knows hownto make a
review i like it because he speaks nice and clear :) you are not bad like a host
LinusTechTips Great job hosting Taran - your review was thorough and fair, doing a good job putting the product's faults into the context of its target demographic and advertised use case. Your speech was well paced and clear too, without any superfluous intonations (Hi? Today we're going to talk about? The mBot?)
Awesome video Taran!
Taran is great as a presenter. He uses skills other than reading from the spec sheet, puts in quality test time before a product review and gives a clear and honest opinion of the product.
Great review and presentation Taran. Looking forward to more reviews from you!
I think this is the first Taran video I've seen and I'm blown away at how professional he is.
Luke and Linus are great and entertaining, but listening to this guy is like listening to someone with a Ph.D present research and that's not a bad thing.
My dad got me that mindstorm kit when I was 12 and i can wholeheartedly recommend it! I spent countless days covering my room in lego and trying out new robot ideas
I really like the way you reviewed it! Great job!
I really dig Taran as a host! It helps a bit that I went to school for robotics, so the content was right up my alley. I'd love to see more videos with him as the host, and more robot content!
You go Taran!! I enjoy your videos mate!
Taran. You're a natural man. Come back and do more.
This is the type of video you should always do Great vid!
Great review. Love this guy.
Great job Taran. Keep it up
Great video! Loved the review!!
Nice work taran, great informative video, great hosting abilities.
Great video Taran. And yes, please more robotics videos.
This guy is miles better than L&L... love the non excitable tone voice and no gesticulating... thank you! more videos like this please.
Hey this was awesome having Taran doing this video! I would like to see more vidoes with him. He does a really good job presenting the videos!
This review was way better than we are lastly getting from Linus or Luke, in-depth enough and not rushed too much. Ads to actual content ratio kept at tolerable level, I like it.
I am glad that Taran is here, the Whole of linus media group doing videos would be awesome!
Taran, you are great! I like your style. Keep up the good work!
Taran (sorry if I messed up spelling) awesome job! Glad to see you as a host and I would enjoy seeing it more often perhaps!!
Good work Taran!
Taran did a really good job on this video. Bravo Taran, keep them coming
Taren is SO good in front of the camera when there is a script. :-)
I would very strongly recommend the Lego Mindstorm kits if you are looking for an introduction to robotics, it has loads of modular attachments and is compatible with all lego and the software is pretty easy to use, although it is pretty expensive but durable.
Great presenting, cool topic, hope to see the other manufacturers dropping in a review sample!
very nice review Terran. pleasantly surprised with your professionalism and how comfortable you seem in front of the screen, kudos.
Well done, nice and honest review. Well explained the gripes with installing and setting up.
Taran, you can definitely do these more often, thumbs up
Thanks Terran, Please keep up with robotic videos
When I was a kid I scripted in PBasic for my line-follow and maze navigating bots - 15 years ago or so. Then I upgraded to C18 when I did the FIRST Robotics competition.
I like it when people other than Linus and Luke do the videos. I mean, they are the best in front of the camera, but it's nice to have some variation on who I watch every once in a while.
Nice "hosting" Taran! Greetings from Argentina!
I actually thought Taran did a pretty good job lol.
Good job hosting. Information was clear and understandable.
Wow. Taran is really good. He should do it more often!
Well done, Taran!!!
Nice video Taran!
Taran, you're awesome, would like to see you more often hosting :)!
Taran you bossed this review, so damn professional. Also my 2 cents on this is I used the mindstorms kit in uni and programmed it using java and a lejos api, it's really fun when you are making progress and super satisfying seeing your code being executed in a physical thing moving about. However when its not going well and its down to some bug because your working with beta software built on top of alpha software or something similar it can infruariting. Also to my knowledge the mindstorms kit can't take advantage of multi threading either, ran into this problem when we were trying to localise our bot in a maze.
I remember when Taran first made a video on Techquickie and back then i didnt like his presentation style. but in this video hes definitely a lot more personable and shows more of his character, hes less stiff and he is more natural which makes me feel like hes more genuine. definitely a job well done. i enjoyed this video
Taran was great at hosting. Keep up the good work, all of you :)
I was unpleasantly surprised to see Taran, but he really killed it in this video and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing him as a host more often! I might even appreciate it. Consumer robots is a niche in which I as a viewer would be quite interested.
I was a lil surprised not to see Linus doing this video but nonetheless it was a great video and great presentation! More videos like this please!!!
Great job Taran! You should do more videos!
You were very fair, and yes more videos about robots. And tell Linus to put a firepoll in the new building!
Good video Taran!!
loved this video. i would like to see some more software videos.
I thank you for this honest reviews. I wish for more reviews that has to do with educations in future.
Really interesting. Robotics has always been interesting to me. Great Job Taran! Hope to see more videos from you.
I really enjoy occasional reviews for goofy little products like this, and Taran is certainly the man for the job, I'd love to see more.
Nice job taran.. you're doing a great review.
I love Linus Tech tips and have been watching for awhile. I actually like this host better for non-computer or computer part reviews like this one. Well done. [slow clap]
Go Taran! :D
Please do more videos
Keep making videos taran, great host !!!
It is very good for its price, basic coding and is a good startup for real robotics.
*MORE TARAN VIDEOS PLEASE!*
Great work, I love your style!
Props to the company for doing an update that damn quick.
I work in a school board and we been using mindstorm last 7 years and still using it. Very robust and reliable robots.
you just proved to everybody that Spam tactics work, get ready to receive a lot more
That was a really amn good video, Taran. Lets see more.
