What is the Role of INTUITION in Gaining Enlightenment?

- Intuition is the mind's power to gain knowledge without using rational thought. But, can intuition give you knowledge of atma, the true self? That knowledge, according to Advaita Vedanta, is the primary means for enlightenment. Q&A Series #14
Intuition is your ability to understand or know something without conscious reasoning or analysis. It's an unconscious mental process that enables you to make decisions or judgments based on your prior experiences and accumulated knowledge. Intuition is often described as a "gut feeling" or "sixth sense" that gives you some kind of insight or understanding without deliberate mental effort.
According to the rishis, the sages of ancient India, atma iss shrotrasya shrotram, the ear of the ear, chakshushash cakshuh, the eye of the eye, and manaso manah, the mind of the mind (Kena Upanishad 1.2). But, you cannot see it with your eyes, nor can you describe it with words, nor can you grasp it with your mind (KeU 1.3). Those who say it is known, they do not know. Those who say it is unknown, they know (KeU 2.3). Such revelations completely dismiss the value of intuition and other means of understanding.
This passage refers to a fundamental inner reality, the consciousness or awareness (chit, cit, or chaitanya) that is your true, essential nature (svarupa), your nature as an awareful being (atma). According to the rishis, your consciousness is actually unborn, uncreated, limitless, vast, and utterly untouched by worldly suffering. That's why it's called the inner divinity. Unfortunately, when you fail to recognize that inner divinity, you become subject to suffering (duhkha) in worldly life (samsara). To free yourself from suffering, you have to remove the ignorance (ajnana or avidya) that conceals your true nature. And to remove that ignorance, knowledge is required, a special kind of knowledge, knowledge of atma, the true self.
Normal intuition is based on your prior experiences and accumulated knowledge. But the rishis were spiritual geniuses. They were blessed with an extraordinary kind of intuition, an intuitive ability that's often considered to be the result of divine inspiration. Their teachings can impart self-knowledge to you and lead you to enlightenment (moksha, mukti).

I can see the rationalist in you, Swamiji! Spiritual intuition does exist, it's a form of grace, and you don't have to be a rishi for it to happen, just a sincere sadhak or bhakt. It feels different than ordinary thought, it comes to you with certainty and spontaneously.

On the role of intuition, so nicely explained here, I just thought to add an example of uncanny mathematical witnessed in some rare individuals ( I have witnessed Shakuntala Devi performing live) who solve large and complex arithmetic in seconds ! That's intuition based on experience and accumulated knowledge ! May be the great Rishis were blessed with similar or much greater blessings in their pursuit of self knowledge ! Such could be true for the geniuses like Alber Einstein, Richard Feynman, etc, etc.

Perhaps the Devine intuition is the accumulated past Lifes knowledges. Since we don't remember our past life, this knowledge can only be accessible through deep meditation. Intuition does not happen out of pure chances or lucks. Everything that occurs is karma. without working towards enlightenment in your past life, you won't have this type of intuition, For example you won't become a swami in this lifetime if you don't work towards enlightenment in your past life.
Divination or even better Yoga are ways to help you discover karma and past lives.
Swamiji if I'm that vast unborn consciousness, then who needs to know that this is my true nature?
Consciousness can't know any thing or experience, then how vast reality is vailed by illusive ego?
If it reveals everything, but to whome it is revealed? 🙏

Swamyji, What is the difference between Maya and Avidya? They look to me the same. Is not Maya is due to Avidya? Are not both incorrect knowledge.
In my experience, Intuition is simply how Soul communicates with mind. Soul has access to all Wisdom as it is individualized Spirit, the Word/Sound/ECK Itself. As intuition is Essence itself, it is always Truth, though as soon as it enters the duality realms (mind) it can be overlaid with distortion by that same and very clever ego/mind. The goal is to act through intuition, in the moment, which is the very definition of Service. The mind (so, the body, mind, memories and emotions) then, is/are used as a tool of the Divine. The Earth School is about (and only about) returning to that Understanding or, through Conscious Choice, to return to aide others Master this Understanding. I could be mistaken. What does your intuition say?
