Ricki Lake Says Lucille Ball Wasn’t Nice At The Oscars | WWHL
I remember Bob Hope saying that Lucy was so down that she wasn't working had no series anymore and backstage didn't think anyone cared about her until she came out and the audience gave them a standing ovation so I don't think miss ball was in a great mood that night Mr. Hope actually told her get out there Now!!❤️
Yes!!!
Come on now, she was a communist, and there are no nice communist. Everything upsets them.
Trying to throw shade at one of the most iconic women comedians is extremely disrespectful! Lucille had a stroke a few months prior to the '89 Oscars and was very concerned that signs of her stroke would be visible on stage. I'm sure the last thing on her mind was some no-named kids singing and dancing. Maybe if you weren't so self-absorbed you would be aware of other's plights. Show some respect, ANDY!
Lucille ball was a celebrity but I don't worship her she isn't my icon!
@@susanbrogan3267 you calling her a celebrity when she was much more than that. She was an innovator, a trailblazer for women and comedians, she was so much more than just a celebrity.
@@darreylhenderson702 She was a celebrity and I don't worship her! Good for you and your enthusiasm for Lucille Ball!
Also she had some dental issues that night - etc. Bob Hope cajoled her into being on the show - she finally said yes, because they were friends and I am so glad she did do it. Within a few weeks she died. And while she was hesitant about doing the show, she ended up happy that she did it; the entire audience gave a standing ovation to Lucy and Bob. So good to see.
I know this didn't come across well but I guess if you met your idol and it didn't go well, it's not something you'd forget and would be a story that would come out eventually. Doesn't mean Andy and Ricki don't still appreciate her though, and hopefully realise we can't all be perfect all the time, plus as others have said, she had horrible health issues in the end. It would be hard for anyone who knew her impact not to recognise how gifted she was and what she was able to give :)
Lucille Ball died shortly after? Well, Lucille was probably overwhelmed about her health issues and seen the view that her days in this world were coming to a end. My mother used to always mentioned that Lucille was sick & old before she expired.
I wouldn't have been too thrilled if I were Lucy either. Stuck with that Lake, and God knows who else.
Yeah!
But to be fair . . . That number went on and on and on and seemed to never end.
Lucille Ball I knew was tough. But loyal and kind and caring. She was having health issues, and very concerned in general that night - was the first appearance she had made in some time.
Lucy HAD to be tough; Like Bette Davis, Lucy had many hardships
She died shortly after. This was her last appearance.
Wow, she could not have just said Ms. Ball passed shortly after that, and she could have just not been feeling well?
Lucy was on pain meds that night because she had dental work that day. She didn't want to do the show because she thought she looked horrible. Maybe a little empathy is in store.
😭😭😭😭
Someone always has to put on that cape.
I still Love Lucy. Bitchiness and all.
Lucille Ball is the only celebrity whose death brought me to tears. It was like the death of a family member who entertained me when my parents were absent.
RIP Lucy!🙏💒
Look, most celebrities are jerks, and I have no problem when people are honest about their encounters. I knew somebody who knew Lucy and from what I understand from him - and also Carol Burnett - Lucy was a nice lady BUT tough. She was a savvy businesswoman at a time when many women were not running companies and she did not suffer fools. I never met her so I can only offer this analysis.
LB Enterprises has folded into Desilu Communications LLC in 1990.
Its staff: Desi Arnaz Jr., Lucie Arnaz, Laurence Luckinbill-Los Angeles, Calif.
Susan Seidelman, Jonathan Brett-New York, NY.
Arthur Allan Seidelman-The Middle East. Its most recent credits were "The Dutch Master" was nominated
for an Academy Award in 1994 and "La La Land" was nominated for
fourteen Oscars but won six categories in 2017.
Obviously, great legends like Gary Morton who've left the company and joined CBS in the fall of 1990 said
about Desilu and its staff with great pride in the history of television like "I Love Lucy" and
the staff was totally responsible for that.
Lucy was not well at this time and unhappy with her looks as well as still coming off the hurt of her Life with Lucy tanking and her health never truly recovered after Stone Pillow wearing six layers of clothes in the summer heat filming. She,was roped into going by Bob Hope, she just could not say no to him and yoy could see by the banter between them that he was able to pull her out of it. The man had a gift and they had a special relatiinship. She was tired and not feeling herself and im certain EVERY one of the hige crowd of new hollywoid kids wanted a piece of her and who could blame them. But that shit gets old very quickly and saps the life out of you. Ive seen many stars signing autographs or dealing with fans or people wanting and you can see the point where anyone would get fed up. Especially when you are somewhere to perform and the other performers come at you.
Lucy was definitely used to being surrounded by the most talented people in Hollywood. I'm sure it upset her to be associating with the talentless, money making machines that lack creative longevity during the 80s and early 90s. She created an entire genre of television and had 50 years of experience by the time she encountered Ricki Lake.
Ms. Lake can have several seats.
Rick was like 18 tho she didn’t have her talk show yet. How would anyone know or assume she’s not talented
@@Stopwar1234 Oh, no. Now I don't know where to start. Ricki Lake is an Emmy Award winning artist and of course, I've watched both of her syndicated talk-show
programs were very successful and profitable. She's very funny and smart with an wonderful sense of humor because she cares about one of life's greatest
challenges. Today, she lives in California with her husband, Ross Burningham and their children. Peace and Love!
Well, can't assess the talent of some of these performers listed, but Lucy's children aren't exactly the most talented performers in the world either. She didn't mind putting them on the air.
I ❤️ LUCY
I don’t think Ricki was intending to disrespect Lucy. Andy was the one who asked about it and Ricki just spoke to her experience. I don’t think her mentioning that she died shortly after was intended to be shady. I think she was just adding onto the story with a quick reply before they moved onto the next segment/topic.
True!
I'm so sorry.
Not a nice thing to say.
Well that's tacky of her. Lucy was in very bad health & died like a month later. How about a little respect.
that dance number was by supposedly "future Oscar winners", but to date, none of them have won an Oscar
Just about a year later, they're non-Oscar winners
in 1990.
Don't throw shade on Lucy. You are lucky to have even have been in her shadow. She died weeks after the Academy Awards, and was reportedly feeling quite ill. She didn't even want to do the show because she wasn't feeling well at all, but Bob Hope and his staff convinced her to do it. Don't mess with a legend, Ricki. It demeans you tremendously. You have no right to JUDGE Lucille Ball.
Amen to that. Very low class Ricki, to say, she dissed me then she died.
@@robertofajardo920 Yes!
I like Ricki Lake but I think it’s very disrespectful of her to talk about a legend like Lucille Ball in such a horrible way. From all the footage I’ve seen of Lucy at the 1989 Oscars, it looks like she was very happy to be there that evening and her fans and peers gave her a standing ovation that most wouldn’t ever receive today. It’s all on RUclips if anyone wants to see it. But of course, I wasn’t there, so if that’s her opinion, then fair enough. But Lucy deserves more than “she was salty” and “not nice.” Lucy loved her fans and if this was her last public appearance, she shouldn’t have been so critical of the Hollywood icon.
Her being a legend doesn’t stop her from giving a bad experience and being able to speak on it.
Ricki was there. None of you who commented were. If Lucille was in a mood then she was in a mood? Ricki is just saying what she saw!
"She died shortly after that" It's so cruel to diss somebody (especially a legend like Lucy) and then say that...
Yes very disrespectful
yeah like wtf was that...thats so low..
I ain't going that far.
Well don’t be mean to people and they can’t disparage you when you’re dead! 🤣
I'm not being mean nor disrespected by anybody, okay? I'm just looking for something on the brighter side.
Lucille Ball is one funny lady who makes people laugh on TV, everything from I Love Lucy to Here's Lucy.
She's also the founder, financier and executive producer of Desilu Communications from 1951 to 1985
and folded into 3 Ball Entertainment in 1986 which Dame Susan Seidelman, Jonathan Brett and
Arthur Allan Seidelman took over for this. 3 Ball's most recent credits were The Dutch Master (AAN, 1994)
and La La Land (AA, 2017) were very successful and profitable.
Ricki lake looks good. She still looks young n natural (no surgeries)
She looks great, but why on earth do you presume she hasn't had any surgeries, lol
@@matthewrettenmund8358 because she looks natural
The heifa did the lap band surgery.

@almoja I was responding to the original poster who wrote that she is natural with (no surgeries). Try to keep up.
Ricky’s 50yrs old? Daum! She looks great!
All I have to say is, "I love you, Lucy." Because you deserve it. Audiences and fans were always there for you, believe me and so should
anyone else around the world.
She died in 1989
I've read that Lucy was a very kind person. Because she was a celebrity, doesn't mean she always, in whichever public appearance- had to be happy or pleased. Everyone has their bad days. Considering that it was some time before her death, her health wasn't good.
How is being asked to present at an Oscar ceremony a bad day? Most people at her age then would be thrilled to be asked to do ANYTHING!
@@jackanthony976 This doesn't mean she always had to put a smile on. And the incident with Lucy took place while they were on backstage and has nothing to do with her presenting the event.
She actually initially refused to do it. But Hope talked her in to it. She felt she looked old and wanted her fans to remember her as she was. She turned down any role offered to her in the last few years of her life, including the lead role in "Driving Miss Daisy", which her husband lobbied to get her. She actually wrote the producers of the movie and asked them to NOT consider her for the role, which went to Jessuica Tandy. She even turned down a movie written just for her by her good friend, Jim Brochu, entitled "The Story Lady". Ironically Jessica Tandy subsequently agreed to take on the role.
@@TheVerbalVolley Sadly, when former actor/producer/executive of Desilu Communications from 1961 until 1990 actually
wrote after the death of his wife, Lucille Ball who turned down a movie written just for her by her good friend, Jim Brochu.
"Fried Green Tomatoes" (1991). Ironically Jessica Tandy subsequently agreed to take on the role and earned her
second and final Oscar nomination in 1992. Released by MCA/Universal in Christmas Day 1991.
By now, Gary Morton has gone from Desilu Communications from 1961-1990 to a much better one at CBS from
1990-1999. His healthy relationship at CBS under Les Moonves and Robert Gros under Shari Redstone that he was
one of the best in the business. There was no formal contract, just an handshake. Gary Morton died in
September 1999.
@@markelijio6012 I'm pretty sure that Fannie Flagg wrote "Fried Green Tomatoes", not Jim Brochu. He wrote "The Story Lady" for her. Lucy turned it down and Jessica Tandy accepted the role. By this time, Lucy was so depressed about the cancellation of "Life with Lucy" that she felt she would be a jinx to anything she appeared in. When she was under consideration for the movie "Driving Miss Daisy" (Gary was lobbying hard to get her the role), she immediately wrote to the producers and asked that her name be removed from consideration. Ironically, Jessica Tandy got this movie as well which, as we all know, she won a much deserved Oscar for. Two great ladies.
OMG just saw that Oscar number - LMAO yup bad!
How ridiculous. How some people can be so jealous!!Horrible!!!Lucy will always be a legend! Lucy!
Gotta love RUclips....just watched it....and only a few of them are relevant today....lol...
why does it matter if they are relevant to you today? That was like 30 years ago. People have also died since then. Damn them for not being alive while you're here on earth as well lol
Just because you don't see celebrities on TV every 5 minutes, doesn't mean they're not relevant! They're still in the Hollywood circuit and these two women are good friends with MANY huge stars!
they were introduced as the future Oscar winners of tomorrow and I don't think any of them have won an Oscar ,correct me if I'm wrong.
@@darreylhenderson702 A year later, they're non-Oscar winners in 1990.
No class blake...Years after Lucys death people still talk about her and watch her show..years after blakes death it will be RICKI WHO...
See my post.
I have heard from a few people who had encounters with Ms. Ball at different times throughout her career, and they all said that she was unpleasant to put it mildly. She was very talented, but not a nice person.
Lucy was probably tired and the last thing she wanted to do was be in a room with a bunch of chatty people.
Furthermore, I felt it wasn't nice at all for Ricki Lake to mention that Lucy died shortly after. That was a more uncouth thing to do than what Ricki Lake concluded in her own head that Lucy was basically being snobbish in that green room. Ricki Lake didn't know Lucy personally nor could possibly know what Lucy may have been going through at that moment.
How is it not nice to mention someone died? It's a neutral fact. Perhaps she mentioned it to imply WHY she might not have been nice- because she didn't feel well.
She should have just said "I hate Lucy"
Lucy did die a month later, it's a fact. She was in poor health and her career was over by then. She was not a happy person anymore and no longer wanted to live.
@@AlfredHawthornBennyHill You do not know that she did not want to live. I am sure she wanted to feel better.
@@ben8447 Pretty much sums it up.
I'd be salty too if I felt like I was over it and still had to be there.
I love Lucy (lol) but she was pretty known to not be the nicest, not just later in life.
Obviously, she was not feeling well. She did not want to be there, but did it as a favor for Bob Hope. Did they expect her to scrape and bow over some teenager?
Ricki is looking great
Sexy, Shapely.
According to Rob Lowe, Lucille Ball was very encouraging towards him that night. She can't have been that awful. Ricki Lake was probably being loud and obnoxious, as typical.
I've seen Lake talk about this before and she made it clear that Ball wasn't hostile or rude to her but she was clearly in a bad mood and didn't want to be there.
Maybe because Rob Lowe was a hot young dude and she liked hot young dudes.
See my post.
Was Rob Lowe there? I thought it was Chad Lowe. Maybe they were both there, but I only remember Chad being in that Oscar production.
@@deealone5191 It was Rob Lowe. He said that she was in the green room after the opening number and she was very kind and complimentary of him. He said she asked him to sit with her, held her hand, and they watched the first 20 minutes or so of the show. He did say she had a splitting headache so he got her some aspirin so it explains why she may not have been in best of spirits along with her other health issues.

Unfortunately in truth, Lucy in her later years was not known for her niceness. Understandable but true.
This conversation is confusing. It seems they're referencing the opening number in which Rob Lowe sang to Snow White & it was a disaster --- all courtesy of Alan Carr. Later in the broadcast, Lucille Ball introduced a production number, Stars of Tomorrow -- in which Ricky Lake appears. The Stars of Tomorrow number began with Blair Underwood singing & it evolved into a fantastic production number. (Though RUclips comments for Stars of Tomorrow are rather negative.)
There were both Allan Carr, producer/writer and Ricki Lake, who have appeared this Emmy nominated special.
I thought Lucille Ball had stopped smoking in the late 60s or early 70's. That's what I found most disturbing.m
I thought so too. As a smoker myself, I can understand why she would have resumed. She probably thought, "I'm dying anyway, so what does it matter?"
Lucy smoked like a chain nearly all her life I heard! I thought she looked great at her last appearance. She was what, 77?
@@markelijio6012 I'm uncertain if you think I'm in any way disrespecting Lucille Ball. I'm not. She has been a part of so many wonderful projects and I admire her talent and her work. Come to find out later that she was Ricki Lake's best friend. She was far better looking and thinner than Ricki. Just putting my two cents in.
I honestly don’t see the big deal over what Ricki said here, and I’m saying that as a lifelong fan of Lucy. She was asked about it and she told the truth. It’s her story to tell if she wants. It was hardly a character assassination, and Lucy’s place in history isn’t going anywhere. It was an amusing anecdote.
