- Are you SO EXCITED about your first prenatal visit?!? I'm excited for you! This video will cover what to expect as well as how to prepare for your first visit to the doctor or midwife after finding out you're pregnant. Everything from the health history that they will gather on you to hearing the beautiful sound of your baby's heart beating and seeing that there's a real life little being inside of you! Yes, you are pregnant and YES, there is life in you!!

I'm terrified. My husband and I have tried for almost four years, started some treatments and found out this past Friday that I'm pregnant. Didn't believe it, still don't (have a bad history with fertility issues and chemical pregnancies.) I've taken four test so far, different times of day, different days, different brands, all say the same but I'm scared as heck to be excited. I have to wait until the 11th of September before the OB will see me, and I'm petrified that when the date gets here something would have gone wrong. It's so scary to try to be positive when you have so much fear. Thank you for the wonderfully informative video!!
Your fear is completely understandable given everything that you've been through! I'm sorry you've had such a hard time and I'll be praying that this sweet little life grows healthy and strong! I would recommend seeing a therapist that specializes in the perinatal period to help you through this process and afterwards during the post partum period. You can do a Google search or check out www.maternalmentalhealthnow.org/ to find a provider in your area.

But in all seriousness. Usually in doctors offices and hospitals they don't allow filming, but you could ask if they could make an exception for you to film the ultrasound since they aren't allowing your husband to be there or you could FaceTime him during it.

Also don't know if you meant your 15 weeks pregnant or only 15 years old. Either way being pregnant is hard and you got this!

I just found out I was pregnant two weeks ago and my first appointment is in another three weeks when I hit 8 weeks and 1 day. I hope they'll let my husband see the ultrasound at least with all this covid stuff going on. I've seen dudes with the women at my obgyn's office so hopefully. Even if he has to be in the car for the rest, I want him to be able to see and hopefully hear the baby's heartbeat

@@PregnancyBirthParenting101 it went really good. I was prescribed progesterone and he told me to take baby asprin. Turns out I was 5 weeks and 3 days, so we saw a gestational sack and a reaaaaallllllyyyyyyy small dot that was the baby

Had my first trimester visit yesterday. They didn't even do an ultrasound obgyn said they don't do ultrasound at 8weeks .she did a regular check up.was so disappointed because most pregnant people get that at 8 weeks.so they book an appointment for 3 week.awww

The sooner the better! You can do this and a provider that makes you feel comfortable and supportive is who you should go with! Check out yelp and google reviews of whatever doctors you are considering letting care for you during this very delicate time.

I had an ultrasound a few days ago and it was quite unpleasant. She wouldn’t let me hear anything, or even look at the screen, and didn’t allow us to get any pictures. She also told me I could put the vaginal wand in and then when I was about halfway she shoved it the rest of the way in. Very uncomfortable.

It's totally up to you, but the more you can include him the more he will feel part of it all and help you guys bond.

Hello please how do you calculate the days in knowing how long you’ve gone? Do you count from your last period or when you did the test strip? Lastly, if it is from the first day of your last period, do you schedule the appointment 8 weeks from it?

Usually 2-3 small ones. Don't look! Distract yourself by watching something on your phone and taking slow deep breaths.

I found out I’m 4 1/2 weeks and I’m moving to another country in two weeks. Anything specific I should make sure to arrange or get from the doctor here before moving so I can make a smooth transition to another doctor/midwife?
Maybe proof of the positive pregnancy test from your doctor so they don't have to repeat it at your new MD/midwife's office to save you the lab fee. And any pertinent medical/surgical history from your chart.
I had my blood work, urine sample, questions a week ago, how long should this one be? I’m assuming a pap and ultra sound, but what else?
Just had a terrible first visit. I am going to be switching care. How important are pelvic exams/pap smears at the first visit? You didn’t mention it here. I would like as little intrusion as possible haha! 🤣
I'm so sorry you had a terrible visit! I totally get wanting things to be the least invasive as possible! Usually if it's been a year or longer since your last Pap then they'll want to do that, but the pelvic exam is up to you and the provider. You have a right to ask for an explanation/education of anything they do and you also have the right to refuse anything if it doesn't seem right for you.

I'm not sure if I want my ob/gyn to be my pregnancy and delivery doctor? She is thorough and smart but always in a rush. Do you have any tips on meet & greets with other drs to find one you are comfortable with?
Absolutely! First, I would post on the local mom's groups what you are looking for in an on/fun and get some first hand recommendations. Based on those recommendations you can see which ones your insurance covers. Then check out Google/Yelp reviews if they have any. And then once you've narrowed it down to a few you can call their offices and say you would like to do a meet and greet with that doctor. Just keep in mind that a lot of doctors take "call", so if you go into labor in the middle of the night and it's not your doctor on call will they come in for you or will you get the doctor on call. Make sense?!

do the people at the prenatal place deliver babies? if so, do they have to? can you just go there for checkups and go to the hospital for delivery?
The doctors or midwives At the practice you go to will be the ones who will be on call to deliver your baby. That being said if you get to the hospital and decide to fire your provider or if they don’t make it in time for delivery, most hospitals have a hospitalist there to deliver your baby. A hospitalist is a doctor that is there 24 hours a day to make sure everyone is safe. But if you don’t want the doctor or midwife at your practice to deliver you then I suggest you change practices.

Great question! You'll actually call your doctor's office when you think you're in labor and they will tell you when you would go into the hospital. Once you get to the hospital, the nurse will call your doctor to let them know you're there and what's going on. That way you can just concentrate on breathing through those intense contractions!

Ask as many questions as you want! 🥰😘 Depending on if you're in labor or why you came in they may admit you to the hospital or send you home. Being admitted to the hospital means you get your very own labor and delivery room, you'll be assigned a labor and delivery nurse and they'll monitor baby while you labor. Yes, you should go ahead and call your OB/GYN or midwife to make an appointment. The majority of women going to that kind of doctor are healthy and well, so as long as you wear a mask and wash your hands you'll limit your risk of getting anything. Keep in mind that while you're pregnant your immune system is suppressed, so you are more susceptible to getting sick. Avoid crowds, wear a mask and wash your hands frequently. Also, congratulations!!!

Are you asking specifically for confirmation of the pregnancy or for all the blood work? Confirmation of pregnancy is usually while you're still in the office/same day and the blood work is usually reported within 48hrs if you sign up for the online charting. 👍🏼😉

Can it take longer than a hour for your first appointment?
Yes! Especially if your doctor or midwife had to attend a delivery. Then you're stuck waiting or they may even call to reschedule. If that happens you can always ask to just see someone else in the practice if possible, so you don't have to reschedule. It can be pretty frustrating when that happens, but just keep in mind one day you'll be the delivery they need to attend and some other pregnant Mama will be stuck waiting. 🥰💕

Great question! I'm not super familiar with HCG numbers, but if you make an appointment with an OB/GYN or midwife then they can do a better ultrasound and tests to confirm your pregnancy.

Crazy that I scheduled my first appointment with Gyno at 4 weeks & they wouldn’t schedule me till 8 weeks. When I called to know what to expect for the appointment they said they only do a urine test and prescription to a lab for blood test. I need better doc or things changed nowadays not sure

How exciting! Congratulations!!! Call your provider to double check, but most likely they will want you to wait. They may say that you can come in to confirm the pregnancy, but that's pretty simple and straight forward. It wouldn't be the in depth visit your first prenatal visit will be.

You definitely can, however I would wait until 8 weeks so they can do an ultrasound! They can do an ultrasound at 4 weeks but you can’t see a whole lot but at 8 weeks you can hear a heartbeat usually!

I went to the er at 6 weeks just bc I was very anxious and wanted to confirm my pregnancy lol. They said that my HCG was fine but they couldn’t find my baby on transvaginal ultrasound. Is that Normal?. My real appointment is next week on the 7th.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! 6 weeks is early to see on an ultrasound especially by an emergency room technician since it's not their specialty. In pregnancy you are immunocompromised (meaning your immune system is low and makes you more exposed to getting sick), so it's best to stay away from the emergency room where there are a lot of sick people unless you truly have an emergency. That way you stay well and healthy and so does your unborn baby 👍🏼😘.

You got this ❤️ Just try to remember to breathe and relax (that’s always my problem, I get so nervous and my heart rate and blood pressure shoots up 🤦♀️) if there is someone you trust and feel comfortable around see if they can go with you. I’m going to my first apt alone too and I’m a nervous wreck. Just know you got this and you’re not alone.. and you will get to see your little baby ❤️

I just found out I'm pregnant and am going tomorrow for my appointment. I'm nervous for it. This should all happen my first appointment right? I have no parents to help me through so idk what to expect for tomorrow.

If you're alone in this pregnancy you can reach out to your local Community Pregnancy Resource Center (may be called a different name depending on where you are) and they can help you with everything you need to get started on the right foot so to speak. Congratulations!!! So exciting! They usually want to see you around 8 weeks or after, but call your doctor sooner rather than later to get an appointment scheduled.
A lot of places don’t let you bring your partner to appointments why is that? I feel like they’re super important to the baby
Why do they have to do a pap and look at your cervix. I'm not pregnant just curious
Great question! They usually only do a pap if it's been over a year since your last one. And the reason for a pap is to make sure there's no abnormal cells or infections. They look at your cervix on the ultrasound to check your cervical length. If it appears to be short then they'd want to keep an eye on it and monitor you because with a short cervix there's a higher risk of miscarriage or preterm birth.
The comments about covid preventing partners from being present at appointments makes me so sad! Our midwife has no issue with my partner coming with me to appointments- if she did I’d free birth and go on with a wild pregnancy. No parent should be left out in the process, it’s barbaric if you ask me!
