@Computer User naturally even with blind humans. If they know the place they'll move around easily because they know the place by heart. If they get out then they're exploring an unknown region.

@Computer User I'd say blind cats should stay inside so they don't get hurt. Like if something fell next to them and they didn't notice, they could get hurt. All cats knock things over, humans as well, dogs as well.

Mine love to do this all the time, until my most recent rescue, sadly she came out with eyesight issues that we didn't know about, that were just bad enough that she is afraid of the dark. Just tonight the power went out for the whole neighborhood right when we were giving out her treats. She had to have about 30 minutes to calm down in the living room before she felt safe to follow me into the office, a safe zone i created for her so she'd always feel there was a place to hide and recover. We have everything in here, and most of the time in here she loves it and shows her belly but she won't in other rooms of the house because she's anxious, especially at night where there are shadows. We have grown acustomed though to leaving certain lights on (the catbox, the water and food bowls, the hallway, one section of the living room she has to go through to get to the box) but we've managed to keep costs down by using led lighting. If I knew how I would do everything I could or give up something I enjoy just so she wouldn't have to feel that way ever again! It kills me sometimes, because I am disabled, a Fibromyalgia patient, and fibro goes right along with deep depression and deep anxiety, I'm on three medications to keep mine under control. I got her before I got this disease if anyone wonders why I can't afford medication for her.

When I had found a blind kitty, the vet told me their eyes swell up to the size of grapes and then they burst. That's why he said, "She simply had no eyes left to save." It may be confusing because he also said, "she would have a procedure called enucleation where the eyes are removed." He meant the eye remnants which were left after they had already burst will be removed. The infection is usually caused by chlamydia they got from their mother's birth canal. This infection is also possible in humans and it's why doctors put antibacterial ointment into the eyes of a baby immediately after birth. My girl's name was Charity and she lived a long happy life, with no trouble getting around the house. Their whiskers sense air currents so minute they won't run into walls. Their ears tell them almost exactly where a noise is coming from. We would play a game of chase where I would clap my hands and she would run to me, then I would go to the other side of the room and do it again. She found it fun. I think her hunting instincts were engaged by the noise. She survived outside to adulthood before I was able to catch her. I figured out how she had found food on her own after an American Cockroach got into the house. Their legs make a distinct skittering noise on hard floors. She hunted it down in less than a minute. I was grossed out when she immediately started eating it, crunching the crispy carapace. I think my other cats who were watching the spectacle were also grossed out!

I know right? When I rescued a kitten, I gave him a flea bath and he just looked at me like, how could you do this to me?! I trusted you. And now you're trying to drown me?! Lol. Afterwards when he was asleep for the first time in a soft bed inside a warm apartment with food and water by his side, he looked like he was in heaven. Like I'll never forget that peaceful look in his face. It's the little things in life that make me happy. I think he slept for two days. Found him a forever home soon after.

He acts like a completely normal cat, he can even play fetch and played normally with my other cat chasing her around, he jumps on all the furniture and barely ever bumps into anything. It’s amazing that they don’t need their sight at all. Please never put down cats just for their blindness. I got my 3rd cat (my "extra" cat) when he got sick (calicivirus and stomatitis) and begged me to take him home one cold December. He was an ear-tipped local stray who for months had been living in front of a convenience store. I'd been feeding him and petting him and I'd see others do so as well. I really didn't plan on a 3rd cat. It took two months of quarantine before he could even be introduced to my other two, and I had them vaccinated for calicivirus even after he got the all clear. The vets estimated his age at about 5 years (same as my other two). As he was older, black and white shorthair, and had chronic problems, I realized I would unlikely find him a home, so he stayed! When we got his diagnosis of CKD (I had noticed foamy pee) I was initially panicked. I think I over-googled and saw only the worse. His stomatitis was initially treated with steroids and antibiotics, but he had regular flare ups and over the years they lost effectiveness. I live in a small town and my vet care is limited, but last summer we drove (3 times!) an hour to a clinic that was able to do dental extractions. The pre-surgery bloodwork actually showed a lot of improvement over his initial bloodwork I had done nearly 3 years before when I first took him in. The surgery was expensive (I'm a teacher! and vet care in Korea isn't cheap!) but successful! For the past 8+ months, no flare ups or pain, and while he gets considerably more wet food, he can still eat kibble. He plays, he cuddles, and he's my sweetheart! I still harbor some guilt for the months that I knew him on the street. If I had considered taking in a dirty street cat when I first met him, he might never have gotten so sick, Can't undo the past, though. Now I have 3 fat, happy indoor cats who have been such great therapy during this pandemic.

Anyone else encouraged her loudly, saying “You can do it!” when Aria tried to jump onto the coffee table?
We adopted an old, blind dog who had been bitten by other dogs and mistreated for many years. He became a wonderful companion. So brave...jumping off ledges he’s never encountered before, running into the surf, and generally running around, as if he was able to see. Sometimes, he’d run into a wall or furniture, fall down, get up, shake his head and keep on going. The vet said, he was old and had about three years to live. He lived another seven! In the end, he died because his heart was too big. I think that diagnosis described him perfectly. It was the most rewarding thing, and as much love as we gave to him, he repaid us tenfold. His name was Hermann. RIP.

It's not that bad for a cat. Cats rely mostly on smells and signals from their whiskers. You'd be surprised to see how they manage to do everything the other cats do, without any problem. I've seen blind cats stalk other cats for fun, or play with them effortlessly. We can learn big lessons from them.

I had two blind cats in my life, I had one that sadly died 2 years after I got her due to an illness. now I have a big fat blind cat for 5 years now. The myths that you need to put blind cats down due to this is COMPLETELY UNTRUE. They are just as much of a cat as any other. They jump, they run, they navigate through the house without any problems. They love, they cuddle, are there for you and want your love and attention as much. Due to them not being able to see, they take life on differently but in a good way. They adapt and are cute cats for life. They just need a home and to not let them outside as they will get lost.
If you consider wanting to take in a cat, adopt a blind cat, you will NOT regret it. I sure know I did not and will never.

Alin Mateiu - Once the infection died down it is possible that she may have retained some sight in her left eye (ie: ability to see light and shadows) but once a cat looses all (or most) of their sight, especially at a young age or birth, their sense of smell, muscle memory, pattern recognition, whiskers, and hearing become their new eyes. These senses are often amplified to make up for the lost sight, and some blind cats can be a bit wonky at using their senses to navigate at first. That’s why it’s seems so hard for her to navigate areas where she hasn’t been and it’s easy sailing after she’s explored the place at least once.

Thank you. I'm legally blind, which means I have a little sight. It is heartbreaking that so many cats have eye problems like this and lose their sight, but it is encouraging that they can have good, full lives with special people who give them a chance. It amazes me that they can navigate so well. There must be more to cats' intelligence than we realize. Those obstacles would be a real challenge for most blind or partially sighted folks. That a cat can handle them so well is really a feat.

One of my cats was in a similar situation. He developed an infection in one eye, causing his mother to abandon him when he was a few weeks old. A friend of mine found him and was able to get him to the vet. He had surgery to remove his infected eye, was neutered, and despite being high risk he recovered completely. My friend fostered him through his recovery, but due to unforeseen medical issues she had to make the difficult choice to re-home him. She messaged me about being interested in fostering or adopting him, and since orange cats are my weakness (at the time I had two orange cats and one gray cat) I jumped at the chance to add to my menagerie. It's been close to a year now since I adopted him, and he's the coolest cat in the world.

I rescued 2 cats (Mother and her little daughter) who were mortally sick. At first I wasn´t sure I could deal with it and hesitated for a few days. One of the kittens I originally had chosen died over night in the shelter. That gave me the push I needed. Although the shelter employees said that they cannot give me sick animals I could convince them that I have the better capabilities to care for them. I took them home and spent most of my time desinfecting and cleaning, giving them medicine and caring for them. But after two weeks they both recovered. Now I have the most cutest furballs who follow me wherever I go without any concern. Sure a few things are chronic, like a starting Asthma with the mother and her arthritis. The daughter gets herpes once a year and I have to look out for her getting a cold once a year. But that´s okay.
One important thing, if you adopt sick cats, mind that you need more money for doctors since they are damaged goods. One should have a stable income.

Last night I heard a kitten crying on the streets, so when I went outside with some food I saw that the poor thing was practically a skeleton. I'll be trying to nurse it back to health. Unfortunately for me though, since it seems mostly blind it didn't stop crying all night long (I had it in my bedroom with me cuz I have another cat that hates other cats) so I didn't get much sleep at night, but it looks great so maybe in a bit, it'll be back to normal. (P.S. Glad to see she's recovered! my kitten hasn't opened its eyes, so to me, it seems partially blind. It still reacts to things if they're waved in front of it but other than that, it relies mostly on its sense of smell.)

my mom used to work at a vet, and one day they brought in this small orange kitten, she was really sick and had the same eye problem, they said she wasn't going to make it and they had to put her down, my mom thought she had a chance and so she took the kitten home and nursed her back to health. mom named her penny. penny is still alive to this day at 18 years old.

In 40 years of cat ownership we've never had any problems introducing another cat to the residents. Maybe we're lucky, but the transition for us has always been just about instantaneous.

We just fostered a blind kitten who showed up at my grandma's house after a bad storm. She was two pounds, maybe 11 weeks when we found her, was all scraggly and had fleas, ear mites, and infected eyes, but just wanted to be held and petted and be around people. She was such a little fighter, and after we got her medication for her problems she was crazy and energetic just like a normal kitten.
Because we have a dog with a high prey drive, we couldn't keep her, but we gave her to a coworker friend who fell in love with her. Now she's got a house to run around in and a big brother to play with. The whole thing made me think of Aria, and it was reassuring to know that she still had a good chance to live a happy life.

Becoming so comfortable with blindness, I see this as the miracle of life, human AND animal worlds overlap. You both are wonderful caregivers.

@gael crane, Look on Google for small private rescue kitty groups. Call them and ask about their organization. Ask questions to see if you like this group. You may like more than one group also. We do it because we love them so much and want to help find them purrfect furrever homes. I'm a rescuer myself of 21 yrs. It's the best feeling in the world saving an animal: kitty, doggie, opposum, goat, bird, horse, cow or calf, pigs, chickens. I grew up on the farm, lol, can you tell? Google: Takis shelter, he's super awesome in Crete, Greece. He is happier than most people. It gets in your blood, you just know this is what you are supposed to be doing. Google the young man here in the states that quit his job and got a farm to rescue farm animals. Another gal in the states did the same thing . Lots of people are doing this. They are probably the happiest of all people. The more that help the animals the less that will have to be euthanized. I'm not for breeders: cat or puppy mills or reptiles etc., purebreds are ending up with too many things wrong with them because of the inbreeding. It's telling us to stop creating deformed animals. I'm for adopting from rescues, pounds, humane shelters, no kill shelters, and the first one is where it's a high kill shelter to save the killing of good healthy animals. thank you everyone for listenin. Each person can make a difference. We are supposed to be humans, the smartest of all animals, but not letting needless euthanization. sorry folks, I'm a real rescuer. I love and appreciate Gods gift of the animals for us to enjoy.

Cathy Holley thank you Cathy, yeah, I do foster work now but I would switch to help this group if they were in my ares. I think your information you left will be helpful to so many others. I think we are special people, god made us with this special trait, we love and want to help animals, we can’t help it. Thanks again for the info.!
