This begins with a typically (for Piston) helter-skelter, athletic opening movement, although this one runs out of breath to rest, relax and enjoy the plaintive oboe and flute solos of the 'adagio' before it joins the jolly festival finale to have the last word. This good-natured, expertly-written symphony deserved its' Pulitzer Prize.
I loved the entire concert! A LOT! The Piston was great, the Prokofiev spectacular with Natasha Paremski, and the Tchaikovsky very very good, especially the thrilling 3rd movement!
I believe this is the Louisville recording with Mester conducting. Leinsdorf and the BSO gave a more vigorous performance. The Ormandy reading is also excellent. To my ears, giving the resources at his disposal, Mester did a great job...but it wasn't the Boston Symphony.

Brilliant symphony.
BRAVO!
IfI had a quid for every time I've heard Walter Piston on BBC Radio 3, I couldn't afford a cappuccino.
This Symphony received the Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
Damn WP..............you're the man:) Such creativity and inventiveness! Stravinsky would be proud!!!
Great! Performance!
MrWalkingbass, please, who is performing?
I will be going to hear this played by the Oregon Symphony tomorrow!
I was there too! What did you think?
