Thanks for this review. I ordered the X Ultra 4 and X Ultra Pioneer and hiked in both for about 5-10 miles each. I found the Pioneer to be more comfortable with a lot more padding throughout, while the Ultra 4 had more toe room due to lack of padding. The Pioneer was comfortable all the way through the hike with only being a bit stiff at first. The Ultra 4 just didn't feel as good after a hike but was never stiff to break in. I'm sending the Ultra 4s back and keeping the Pioneer. Build quality seems about even, however the Pioneer is not Gore-tex while the Ultra 4 is. The cost is about $20 between them unless they go on sale for $100 for time to time (Amazon prime day!). Overall the differences between the two is very subtle and I just went with my gut because of the padded comfiness of the Pioneer. My all time comfortable boot, however, is still the Sketcher Segment-Garnet hiking boot. By a *lot*. However, it is only good for normal trails and is not something for wet rocks, or ice in the winter. They're leather and they last for years and years. I would be wearing the Sketchers if the trails I am now hiking didn't have steep climbs and rocks. I wear 10.5 and all boots I tried fit as expected.
I'll be square. I've worked with and sold shoes for years. Its something I know. They are stable and good quality. Give them a 7 out of 10 on comfort. They are nice shoes. If comfort is solely your angle then not these jokers but functionality 9 out of 10. As long as you are trail blazing. Definitely a high quality shoe the outsole/tread is like an off road tire. Great out sole. Seriously 10 out of 10. Stability in the heel with the dual density midsole 10 out of 10. Lateral support is isolated to the ankle height and heel material. Light weight. Water proof. Lace up comfortably. It's a good shoe.
I just bought a pair of these yesterday and was looking for the exact review last night and watched your Ultra 3 vs Ultra 4 video. Really glad that you’re reviewing the X Ultra Pioneer now.
@@hartwick87 I got mine on Amazon uk in January £112 GBP, also Amazon de have them. I expect amazon US is waiting to clear the old stock of Pioneer climashield
Thanks for this comparison. I took your advice and ordered the Pioneer's over the 4s. These will be my first Salomons! Looking forward to trying them out!
@@anthcamps I ended up ordering the 4s also just to see which I liked more. The 4s won and I returned the pioneers. I liked them also but prefer the fit of the 4s. A little roomier toe box and not so bulky at the top. I also added SOLE medium insoles and they're perfect. Most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. Only about 10 miles on them so far but so far I'm very happy with them.
@@Davepool_TF-69 dang awesome to hear. Of course the pioneers are on sale at my locals store right now and the 4s aren’t. Would definitely prefer roomier toe box. 4s were on sale last week. Dang
I have these, and they now do them is a full Goretex version. So, to be clear, he is not wrong, these boots are awesome. I am an experienced hiker and ex-soldier and these are the best boots I have ever owned 😎
Thank you very much for doing this review. I was devastated when I was looking to replace my XUltra 3 GTX and found they were no longer available and the 4th edition had terrible right ups. Finding your review and this product has made my day, no, week! Given that you said the innersole isn't as good as the 3rd edition do you have a suggestion to upgrade the innersole?
Ived own 2 pairs of the X Ultra Gtx loved them. I just bought the X Ultra Pioneer... Although they seem similar i feel the cut some corners making them less materials in upper part of shoe and the waterproof not goretex. Havent worn them yet but ill repost when i do.
Just today I went to look for some hike shoes and I tried on those Salomon X ultra pioneer and I was surprised with how light they are, they look and feel very good. I’m size 10 and the 11 was much better for me. In my opinion, I think the material is not very breathable and that’s why I decided on a pair of KEEN, but I’m still considering buying a pair of shoes.
I have not had a chance to review the GTX version. I would think they would be more expensive, but definitely superior waterproofing. If waterproofing is important to you, I would def recommend GTX version!
could you do the back to back comparison? I’m trying to decide between the two. I’ve seen some reviews on the 3 where people are getting tripped by the hook catching on the opposite boot on the 3. Do you have any info on this? Thank you!!
I haven't had a chance to test out Daintree yet, but they seem very similar in style, so I am thinking both would be good if you stick to the trail and if there is no cold/ice/snow involved.
Your reviews are very in depth and informative and I greatly appreciate them. Was wondering if you could recommend a mud boot/shoe that has a rather rigid/stuff shank for tower climbing? I was thinking the Danner Field Ranger, La Sportiva Raptor Ultra 2 GTX or something like them.
Hi !! What's the difference between this pairs and Daintree mid gtx ? besides that X ultra pioneers has CS WP and Daintree MId GTX, well, has Gore-tex, is there something else ? in my country these two models have the same price, actually i just bought the Daintree pair, waiting for its arrival, nice vid!

I just ordered these and the x ultra 4 for woman. It will be quite interesting to decide about which one to keep. I have the x ultra 3 in low but want a mid high one too. Sadly the 3 was no option any more. I think the fit on my food will be the deciding criteria. Both reviews of you were really helpful. Thank you a lot.
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour...For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Don't buy it, I regret buying it. It is HORRIBLE. Not true to size, it is too small and narrow. Even going size up, the fit is awkward. Sole is terrible, you feel the ground, too soft. It is light, but not comfortable, and you don't feel stable in it. Overall doesn't feel very robust, you feel it will not last long. Really, it is a CRAP shoe/boot. Go buy yourself Merrell Moab 3 or The North Face Hedgehog Futurelight. You notice they both have Vibram which is far superior to what Salomon has.

Worth it??
Back to back brother! Can’t wait for the vs review ultra 3 mid gtx vs pioneer. Legggggo!

Just to update this video, in 2022 Salomon introduced a new X Ultra Pioneer GTX Gore-Tex version. Same lining and sole unit as the old 3

Where are these being sold? I can't find a Gore Tex version anywhere and it seems impossible to find the old x ultra 3 gtx.

Im a huge fan of your salomon reviews! You should cut in half some of these shoes to se the tech inside, just as "Rose Anvil" does in his channel!
