A personal big THANK YOU for covering one of my favorite underappreciated, yet amazing hard rock bands from the 70s. I totally agree that Angel were ahead of their time. Although I love the proggy earlier albums, and especially Giuffria's playing, my personal favorite is the poppy-er "White Hot." Normally, I don't gravitate to more commercial sounding music, but this album was so amazing, I couldn't help myself. I was also lucky enough to see Angel live following the release of White Hot- they opened for Styx on the Pieces of Eight tour, and they were phenomenal. Great stuff, Pete!
I had their first 3 albums in the late 70s, loved them. I even named my original rock trio I started in the 12th grade White Angel. We played a lot of gigs back then. There was something very special about their sound back then. Relistening it stirs up some of those old feeling, that's got to say something about them.
Me and my mate in the UK do because of Kiss. He has the individual albums including the new one. We both have the box set with all the albums from the 70s and 80. It includes the live set, rare soundtrack songs and various out-takes etc
Wow, thanks for this! Been a huge fan since the mid 70’s. Actually still have some fan club memorabilia from that time: huge wall poster, tour photo book, etc. My top 5: On Earth..., Hulluva Band, Angel, White Hot, Live Without A Net. I’m pleasantly surprised how much I like Risen. Love, love, this band. Takes me back to junior high school, and going to the record shop after school in the hopes of finding a new Angel release. Great times!
True Story: in 1979, when the song "Lay It On The Line" first came out, and I heard it for the first couple of times on the radio, I thought for sure it was Angel. And I thought it was the best song Angel had ever put out. . . . . then I found out it was a Canadian band called Triumph. (that was also the first time I had heard of Triumph, and then I became Triumph fan after that.
Saw Angel open for Styx back in the day and they did put on a good show. Don't remember which album they were touring for, but I think it was: White Hot, which was the first album of theirs that I owned.

I completely forgot about this band. Giuffria was one hell of a keyboard player. His solo band in the 80's ended up being Craig Goldy's first major gig before Dio...
Many years ago, I listened Punky Meadows on a radio talk show. He has a very interesting story about how when the band broke up in 1979 all of them were flat broke because they never really made any money during the time they were recording and touring and he decided to go back to his home to North Carolina and was so broke that his family had to send him money to buy a bus ticket from California to North Carolina. And when he got back to North Carolina he tried his best to get a real job but no one would hire him. In the early 80's he worked at a Mom and Pops movie rental store until he scraped up enough money to start a tanning bed business. From the mid 80's all the way until the mid 2000's that's all he did was own and operate a couple of tanning salons. The people that worked at his tanning salons had no idea that he used to be a rock star. It wasn't until the late 2000's that he had the urge to want to play music again. . . . it's a fascinating story about what happens to these guys after the music business is done with them and how hard it is for them to put a normal life together afterwards.

I had the good fortune of seeing Angel in '77 or '78 opening for Styx at the Civic Center Music Hall in OKC. Both bands were outstanding, however, for Angel, they really had something to prove, and prove they did, definitely the highlight of the evening.

Their first two albums are killer. They weren't called American Deep Purple for nothing:) On Earth As It Is In Heaven is a solid Hard Rock album as well.
@@cmd1958 yeah, Legs Diamond was also compared to Deep Purple. They are a kick ass band as well, their songs such as Underworld King have that Purple vibe.
I saw one of the very few UK gigs Legs Diamond performed, the band were awesome and my friends and I met Rick Sandford after the show, real good guy and terrific frontman A ranking the studio albums of The Diamond would be great, the first 3 are the best in my view.

Pete comes through again! Angel is one of those bands that should have been huge. Tower should be in everyone’s top ten songs. It’s a masterpiece. Risen was easily one of the best albums of 2019. So many great tunes on that record and Frank sounds great. Punky even better. Sinful would be my number one Angel record. Sure it’s more poppy than prog, but damn is it good. Can’t go wrong with Angel!
@@williamwallace5857 Angel were 10 times as talented as KISS. Frank Dimino is a way better singer than Paul Stanley and Punky Meadows is a way better guitarist than Ace Frehley. Greg Guiffria was a super talented keyboard player. Barry Brandt was and is a superior drummer. Think about your saying Sir.

Speaking of brief catalogs, how about doimg album rankings of a band that deserves more recognition as an early forebearer of heavy metal - Trapeze. Medusa '70 is a fantastic album that should stand next to Sabbath, Zep, and Deep Purple.

Good one , Pete. Around 1980, my high school buddy heard about them , and bought all their albums, that he found in the cut out bins for about $1.99 each. He LOVED Angel. Me, I couldnt get past the lacy white pretty outfits, I was more into NWOBHM, so i passed on ANGEL> It was till about 2010? that i looked into them from reading about them in one of Martin Popoff's books, and they set my interest. I totally got into them from then on .Especially the first debut album and LIVE WITHOUT A NET.
Im a fan since the 70's, but thought i was the only one game enough to admit it? A great but underated rock solid band. I owned all the LP's previously. My favorites: 1) White Hot 2) Sinful 3) All the other 3 earlier releases. Have not got "Risen" yet. But i will now. Thanks Pete. Cool review and somewhat of a surprise.
Loved Angel. On Earth As It Is In Heaven is weirdly brilliant. The fact Frank Zappa wrote a song about Punky Meadows, means they did achieve some kind of immortality. Tower is my fav song.Incidentally, listen to Angel Theme and then Ozzy's Mr Crowley intro. Sound familiar?
I was trying to place the Angel Theme tune. I knew it was Ozzy but you're right it's Mr Crowley. I'm hearing other influences in there as well. Perhaps Pete id right. They were ahead of their time. Good band!
Came across this band a couple of years ago, after doing a search for not so well known American rock bands and this was one of many great bands that came up.

The original version of that song (with Punky on guitar) is even better. Check out the version by Bux. Bux was another band Punky (as well as original Angel bassist Mickie Jones) was in.

I bought the box set of Angel albums on Casablanca after watching this & so far Ive really dug them. I never listened to them back in the 70s cuz I thought they looked a little wimpy/poppy from their album covers & pics in Circus magazine, etc.

Going off my bad memory I recall reading that one of the members of Kiss(I think Gene Simmons) discovered Angel, got them signed, and liked their sound and how their look was opposite of Kiss and liked the idea of Kiss being the dark and dangerous band while Angel looked more friendly and accessible. Could be wrong so correct me if so. Also, please do a album ranking of Riot, Slade, Badfinger, and Tesla. Love your videos!

Seen em with THE GODZ!!! Springfield Illinois '79. Love those first 2 Godz albums. Angel should have lasted another 4 or 5 albums. They kinda just missed MTV. Perfect band for MTV.

100% agree with your ranking, Pete. Helluva Band is absolute killer. It belongs in my top 5 of the seventies, perhaps even of all times. Angel is a lot like The Baby’s : both bands have super strong debut albums, epic follow up and a solid third record before going downhill. Both bands suffered from a girly image and name, and were perhaps a bit too poppy/mainstream for the die hard heavy rock/metal fans. Both bands were ahead of their time. And both band have die hard loyal fans (including myself)!
Saw them in 1977 Boston with Godz-1- sinful, 2- In the beginning, 3- White hot-4-Angel, 5-Live without a net! Interesting enough they had all the exposure-Movie-Foxes w Jodie Foster-American Bandstand-King Biscuit Flower hour-yet still not main stream! My fav band of all time!

Billion Dollar Babies (Alice Cooper Band) - ‘Battle Axe’, ‘Starz’ (self titled), Riot - ‘Rock City’, and Angel - ‘Helluva Band’. Those four albums remain ‘favourites’ to this day and were indeed a fortunate find - all in mint condition and costing a mere £7.20.
Definitely should have been bigger! Was fortunate enough to get to see them back in the day. Just picked up "Once Upon a Time". I liked "Risen". Their live album is one of best live albums I've heard. My favorite song is "Tower"...followed closely by "Feelings".

I just picked up Helluva Band & White Hot on a whim at a second hand record store the other day. Can't believe how good they are, totally hooked. How this band wasn't huge is beyond me.

A personal big THANK YOU for covering one of my favorite underappreciated, yet amazing hard rock bands from the 70s. I totally agree that Angel were ahead of their time. Although I love the proggy earlier albums, and especially Giuffria's playing, my personal favorite is the poppy-er "White Hot." Normally, I don't gravitate to more commercial sounding music, but this album was so amazing, I couldn't help myself. I was also lucky enough to see Angel live following the release of White Hot- they opened for Styx on the Pieces of Eight tour, and they were phenomenal. Great stuff, Pete!

I had their first 3 albums in the late 70s, loved them. I even named my original rock trio I started in the 12th grade White Angel. We played a lot of gigs back then. There was something very special about their sound back then. Relistening it stirs up some of those old feeling, that's got to say something about them.

Me and my mate in the UK do because of Kiss. He has the individual albums including the new one. We both have the box set with all the albums from the 70s and 80. It includes the live set, rare soundtrack songs and various out-takes etc
If you read Circus magazine in the 70's, you would of known about Angel.

Actually still have some fan club memorabilia from that time: huge wall poster, tour photo book, etc. My top 5: On Earth..., Hulluva Band, Angel, White Hot, Live Without A Net. I’m pleasantly surprised how much I like Risen. Love, love, this band. Takes me back to junior high school, and going to the record shop after school in the hopes of finding a new Angel release. Great times!
True Story: in 1979, when the song "Lay It On The Line" first came out, and I heard it for the first couple of times on the radio, I thought for sure it was Angel. And I thought it was the best song Angel had ever put out. . . . . then I found out it was a Canadian band called Triumph. (that was also the first time I had heard of Triumph, and then I became Triumph fan after that.

Saw Angel open for Styx back in the day and they did put on a good show. Don't remember which album they were touring for, but I think it was: White Hot, which was the first album of theirs that I owned.

I completely forgot about this band. Giuffria was one hell of a keyboard player. His solo band in the 80's ended up being Craig Goldy's first major gig before Dio...
Many years ago, I listened Punky Meadows on a radio talk show. He has a very interesting story about how when the band broke up in 1979 all of them were flat broke because they never really made any money during the time they were recording and touring and he decided to go back to his home to North Carolina and was so broke that his family had to send him money to buy a bus ticket from California to North Carolina. And when he got back to North Carolina he tried his best to get a real job but no one would hire him. In the early 80's he worked at a Mom and Pops movie rental store until he scraped up enough money to start a tanning bed business. From the mid 80's all the way until the mid 2000's that's all he did was own and operate a couple of tanning salons. The people that worked at his tanning salons had no idea that he used to be a rock star. It wasn't until the late 2000's that he had the urge to want to play music again. . . . it's a fascinating story about what happens to these guys after the music business is done with them and how hard it is for them to put a normal life together afterwards.
There are a lot more stories of well known musicians with similar experiences ,than you would think.

I had the good fortune of seeing Angel in '77 or '78 opening for Styx at the Civic Center Music Hall in OKC. Both bands were outstanding, however, for Angel, they really had something to prove, and prove they did, definitely the highlight of the evening.
What about ranking Starz? Small catalog, but excellent music!!

Legs Diamond was often referred to as the "American Deep Purple".
@@cmd1958 yeah, Legs Diamond was also compared to Deep Purple. They are a kick ass band as well, their songs such as Underworld King have that Purple vibe.
I saw one of the very few UK gigs Legs Diamond performed, the band were awesome and my friends and I met Rick Sandford after the show, real good guy and terrific frontman

Pete comes through again! Angel is one of those bands that should have been huge. Tower should be in everyone’s top ten songs. It’s a masterpiece. Risen was easily one of the best albums of 2019. So many great tunes on that record and Frank sounds great. Punky even better. Sinful would be my number one Angel record. Sure it’s more poppy than prog, but damn is it good. Can’t go wrong with Angel!

The first album I got from them was their live album "Live Without a Net" released in 1980, and was for a long time one of my favorite live albums.

Speaking of brief catalogs, how about doimg album rankings of a band that deserves more recognition as an early forebearer of heavy metal - Trapeze. Medusa '70 is a fantastic album that should stand next to Sabbath, Zep, and Deep Purple.

Good one , Pete. Around 1980, my high school buddy heard about them , and bought all their albums, that he found in the cut out bins for about $1.99 each. He LOVED Angel. Me, I couldnt get past the lacy white pretty outfits, I was more into NWOBHM, so i passed on ANGEL> It was till about 2010? that i looked into them from reading about them in one of Martin Popoff's books, and they set my interest. I totally got into them from then on .Especially the first debut album and LIVE WITHOUT A NET.
Im a fan since the 70's, but thought i was the only one game enough to admit it? A great but underated rock solid band. I owned all the LP's previously. My favorites:
1) White Hot
2) Sinful
3) All the other 3 earlier releases. Have not got "Risen" yet. But i will now. Thanks Pete. Cool review and somewhat of a surprise.
Loved Angel. On Earth As It Is In Heaven is weirdly brilliant. The fact Frank Zappa wrote a song about Punky Meadows, means they did achieve some kind of immortality. Tower is my fav song.Incidentally, listen to Angel Theme and then Ozzy's Mr Crowley intro. Sound familiar?
Zappa was taking the piss FFS.
I was trying to place the Angel Theme tune. I knew it was Ozzy but you're right it's Mr Crowley. I'm hearing other influences in there as well. Perhaps Pete id right. They were ahead of their time. Good band!

Unknown to me until I stepped out of a London second hand record shop in April 1978 with four albums tucked under my arm. I knew nothing about the bands but the covers looked interesting!
Billion Dollar Babies (Alice Cooper Band) - ‘Battle Axe’, ‘Starz’ (self titled), Riot - ‘Rock City’, and Angel - ‘Helluva Band’.
Those four albums remain ‘favourites’ to this day and were indeed a fortunate find - all in mint condition and costing a mere £7.20.

The original version of that song (with Punky on guitar) is even better. Check out the version by Bux. Bux was another band Punky (as well as original Angel bassist Mickie Jones) was in.

I saw Angel w/The Godz in Buffalo, NY, and the magician whose name I can't remember, made the Angel band members magically appear. It was pretty cool.
I believe the magician you are referring to was Doug Henning.
Love Angel. Bought the debut in late seventies and was hooked when The Tower came on. They should have been huge.
I bought the box set of Angel albums on Casablanca after watching this & so far Ive really dug them. I never listened to them back in the 70s cuz I thought they looked a little wimpy/poppy from their album covers & pics in Circus magazine, etc.

Going off my bad memory I recall reading that one of the members of Kiss(I think Gene Simmons) discovered Angel, got them signed, and liked their sound and how their look was opposite of Kiss and liked the idea of Kiss being the dark and dangerous band while Angel looked more friendly and accessible. Could be wrong so correct me if so. Also, please do a album ranking of Riot, Slade, Badfinger, and Tesla. Love your videos!
Saw them open for Styx in '77, and the fans really did dress up in all white.! Hey Pete, you should do a show on Sparks.
The two best song's they ever made are on 'Helluva Band'. 'The Fortune' and 'Feelings'

Seen em with THE GODZ!!! Springfield Illinois '79. Love those first 2 Godz albums. Angel should have lasted another 4 or 5 albums. They kinda just missed MTV. Perfect band for MTV.
All their studio albums are great, but their best album by far is their Live Without a Net album.
The First 2 are Are Superb Mirrors of Epic British Progressive Rock A La Washington DC!!!

100% agree with your ranking, Pete. Helluva Band is absolute killer. It belongs in my top 5 of the seventies, perhaps even of all times. Angel is a lot like The Baby’s : both bands have super strong debut albums, epic follow up and a solid third record before going downhill. Both bands suffered from a girly image and name, and were perhaps a bit too poppy/mainstream for the die hard heavy rock/metal fans. Both bands were ahead of their time. And both band have die hard loyal fans (including myself)!

Interesting enough they had all the exposure-Movie-Foxes w Jodie Foster-American Bandstand-King Biscuit Flower hour-yet still not main stream! My fav band of all time!

Definitely should have been bigger! Was fortunate enough to get to see them back in the day. Just picked up "Once Upon a Time". I liked "Risen". Their live album is one of best live albums I've heard. My favorite song is "Tower"...followed closely by "Feelings".
The Fortune is Awesome. Telephone Exchange good song too. They do a little Boston thing in the middle of it.

I just picked up Helluva Band & White Hot on a whim at a second hand record store the other day. Can't believe how good they are, totally hooked. How this band wasn't huge is beyond me.
