if you are still having problems with the alternator, get one from ford, you'll never worry again. there is not a single aftermarket rebuilder that i know of that successfully remans the 3.0 ford alternator. don't ask me why, it is what it is. cool rig.
Had my 05 since 06 never changed the alternator. Replacing it 4 times? Buy OEM, yes it cost twice the price but given the shitty location, buy one that's going to last. You'll save in labor costs alone.
It's because its at the bottom of the engine... you drive through a large puddle or creek, anything deeper than 10" and the alternater gets soaked.. after that.. you can kiss it goodbye in the next 12 months
Clayton Bolton - I drive through slush and snow all winter and hit puddles at speed on purpose. Replaced once at 174, 000 mile replaced with a high quality one, no problems. Who ever designed the location however should be stomped.
I have the 01 Escape and I do not have the same complaint with my alternator. All you need to do is remove the passenger tire, remove the serpentine belt from alternator and unbolt the three bolts from underneath. Super easy for me. I never have to replace mine but I did have to move it while putting on new manifolds/cats.
I got an 06 and it’s got 159k and I noticed my lights flicker on and off when I would drive and especially when I’d drive at night with my headlights on it’s at the shop now getting a new alternator👍🏻 This is my first ford vehicle Iv always has Chevy but I love my little escape I agree with the aftermarket comment there’s not much for these suvs. Very nice job yours is awesome!
I hear you on the alternator issue....almost all car manufacturers are cramming things in due to front wheel drive...more compactness for better gas mileage etc.....but on the power - you have those accessories weighing it down some.....front bumper / top rack and things in rack and in back.....also AT tires = more resistance/drag. I'm sure there are quieter Escapes that are 2WD ....off roading alot creates squeaks etc.... keep buying American....do your homework....
Thankful to run across your video just bought this exact car last week except mines an 05 and know nothing about it and wanna change it so it don’t look like a mom car 😂 Also I’m from southern WV myself so loved seeing someone from my state helping me and understanding our hills & roads lol 😂
Nice ride I just bought a 02 with 137k I had it two weeks and I blew a rod so I bought a kit for $800 dollars it getting rebuilt now plus I'm going with synthetic oil and I'm doing the transmission oil and new plugs new PVC I'm hoping it turns out good if so I am going to put some black rims the color is yellow so I will post some pictures when it is done.
My wife had an 06 2 wheel drive. It was a great vehicle. My question is: Is the 4x4 escape truly an off road vehicle? Im considering buying a 07-09 4x4 if so. Thanks.
The 4wd is smart computer controlled meaning that once the computer senses the tires slipping it will automatically engage the 4wd option and a signal that it’s working will pop up on your gage cluster. If your planning on using your escape off road and or In snowy conditions like I do, I would take it to a ford dealership and have them test the computer function to make sure it’s engaging at the right times. Other than that, I love my escape and have been through some harsh terrain with her, but she’s always held true.
I've torn up fields before and gone uphill on snow that was iced over at -3° REALLY slow to see if it could take it. This was all stock. This fucker takes hits like a Jeep. If you make it an off roader I think it would be really good.
@@gang6009 I agree! I just got a 2002 escape xlt 4x4 and it's been pretty great actually! It's kinda bugging me as I'm a tad ocd and want it to run perfectly. Do you have any issues with throttle etc!?!?
Is that a Setina PB400 bumper with brush guard? I've got a new one for my old Explorer but never installed it. Was wondering if it may fit the 2006 Escape. (I haven't measured the frame yet)
Honestly hit all the cheif complaints I have about mine. I have an 05 and have run into all these issues. It sucks though cause theyre actually pretty good offroading vehicles as far as light suvs go, I've yet to get mine stuck and have taken it down trails meant for quads, but the market for good modifications just isnt there. Pushbar, lift kit and roof rack is like the only big mods you can get. It sucks cause you can mod the shit out of explorers and up but the poor escapes just kinda got neglected. Still, escape gang all the way
Lack of power? My old 03 with the 3.0 friggin ripped. Clocked in 0-60 at 7.5 seconds. Did a 30 roll with a 04 mustang 4.6l and let’s just say i was lookin at that stang through my rear view. Front tires? Forget about it! She was always chirpin and wearin through rubber. Miss that thing.
Same, idk what the fuck this dude's talking about. Maybe it's the extra 500lbs of bolt ons he slapped on there weighing it down... When I turn O/D off its like turnin the hat backwards. We gettin it.
If the first gen escapes are like the 2nd gen then a 255/7016 would be the biggest tire u can put on it mine has a couple hairs width between the trailing arm and the tire 😂
I have an 08 ford escape hybrid and it's a huge piece of shit and the best car I have ever owned at the same time. quality of the interior is absolute garbage, especially for the hybrid, which was a budget car version of a budget car. it rides like shit and randomly jimmies on the highway/when accelerating. Not sure if it's designed that way or if mine is just fucked up. Probably a mix of both to be honest. the power is even more lacking than on the V6, although the electric motor almost entirely makes up for lost acceleration from between it and the v6 version. I have repaired exhaust leaks 4 times now. It constantly needs something little (or huge), but we'll get to that later. HOWEVER, it's quite simply indestructible. I drove it 20,000 miles on rear wheel bearings that were totally destroyed. How did they get destroyed, you ask? I put 39 bundles of shingles in the back. At 68 lbs per bundle of Owens Corning Duration, this tiny ass SUV moved 2652 lbs around (not very well I might add, but it did it). I have also towed a roughly 3000+ lb trailer full of shingle waste around and the torquey little electric motor pulls it around no problem. This car will turn off the engine while towing. Also, I lost control on the highway after hitting a deep puddle and rammed into the concrete barrier at 40-55 MPH HEAD ON. I just replaced a few parts and drove it away, although it needed a bunch of suspension parts to be driveable. I walked away from the crash with minor injuries, although I thought I broke my hand (i didn't). Finally it always needs something small, but that's because I have managed to put about 40,000 miles on it in a single year and I drive HARD. the parts are hilariously, stupidly, unreasonably cheap for this thing - even the Motorcraft shit - and the tiny little 2.3L I4 looks like a lawnmower in the engine bay that was made for the 3.0L V6 so you have TONS of room for everything. The fucking transmission has 2 drain plugs. My friend at JiffyLube said if I bought it there they wouldn't even charge me for a transmission fluid change, but a differential change, it is so easy to work on. And I have replaced a lot of shit, including almost all the suspension, shocks, brakes, interior crap like stereo, but most of that shit is wear items so it's hard to complain since I bought it with 82K and what seemed like no maintenance. I did basically all the work myself or with a friend. It's a great little work truck. It has always started and ran. I seriously can't imagine what other vehicle I would get to replace it. Actually I can - it would have to be either a RAV4/Highlander/Explorer hybrid, but those cars can't be bought used for $5,000 with cheap parts/proven durability. I don't have $35,000 for a brand new RAV4 hybrid and it would be retarded to buy one anyway because of how I use vehicles. Ford overbuilt the shit out of the hybrids because they were intended for the taxi market by matching a modified Mazda/Ford Ranger I4 and a transmission they literally just copied from the 2nd generation Prius and then improved upon by adding an absolutely massive radiator for the electric batteries. In fact, AISIN, toyota's co-company/transmission manufacturer actually built the transmissions because Ford got involved in some lawsuit or something because they got caught "reverse-engineering" it. This is one of the only hybrids that doesn't burn up batteries. It is the ONLY hybrid I have ever seen at a junkyard with the batteries still in the car. There is no market for used Ford Escape Hybrid batteries. They just do not break. Needless to say the car is garbage and has never "impressed" anyone but people I worked with who were astounded that it never died. When it is totaled way beyond my ability to fix it, I will just buy another one. Also - 2008 or earlier is the year to go for durability/cheapness because after that the engine got more complicated with VVT and they added an electric AC compressor that is very expensive although you get significantly more HP and MPG's for the trade. I'll take my durable, simple, easy to work on shitbox as it is though. The car's suspension/brakes/engine/trans is almost identical from 2001-2012 so you have a huge range to look for in junkyards and online for replacement parts.
Dude you're missing one point of that whole vehicle it was never made to be an off-road vehicle. It wasn't designed to be buried in mud. If you went through four alternators then you're probably getting mud and all that kind of crap in it, I have two Ford escapes One of them is a 2001 The other is a 2004 they both have the original alternators on them and they both have over 200,000 mi on them. My 2001 I do light off-roading and I've never had any issues. But some people like you like to complain about issues you've created for yourself like taking a Ford escape and trying to turn it into a mud vehicle
I have a 05 3.0 v6 lacking of power as well. You might need to buy a cool intank for a bit more power. The alternator on mine is original and never gave out other than the fuel pump which are very expensive.
I got a 2003 which I bought new. At 150K, still got the original alternator. Not sure why you keep losing yours. You killed the power with the bigger tires. I put snow/mudders on mine, which I hate, but are good for snow. I parked it, only to use in weather situations. Bought a 2018 escape which is great. (fully loaded) Wife and kids are driving the hell out of it. Living at 1600' and having to travel down to 800', the back and forth needs some hp. Both cars do wonderful. I would never put bigger tires on either one. Engine too small.
Hey Phil. Since you've owned both I want to ask you the same question I asked Noah. I recently came across a 2004 Escape XLT with 32k original miles for $7,000 or best offer. I'm debating between getting that or going with a newer 2018 Escape SE for about $18,000. Do you have any preference between the two vehicles? I'd really appreciate your recommendation. Thanks
My 03 has had issues along the way. The coils will crack causing misfire. I drove it like that for a while, which was a huge mistake. Ruined all 3 catalytic converters. (very costly) I keep the old one only for weather, besides I couldn't get anything out of it. The new one is WAY more quiet inside. Ride is much better, and it has a warranty. Still has plenty of room for a small car, and does good in the snow. It really depends on what you need the car for. Go with the new one, I say.
I have a 03 stock no modifications Just Regular maintenance n care and I agree with the power Not being enough, going up a hill or mountain rode at 45 to 50 mph the engine Revs to 3k and it seems to Be cinda forced.
Do you have the 3.0 6 cyl? Mine runs great. Last week I took it out for about a 10 mile drive. A mile from the house I floored it and shot up to 90 in just a matter of seconds from 55. The new one I bought has the 1.5 turbo. Plenty of power there also.
Hey Noah thanks for your videos. I recently came across a 2004 Escape XLT with 32k original miles for 7k or best offer. I'm debating between doing a similar build to what you've made or going with a newer 2018 Escape SE for about 18k. If you had to do it over again, would you save the money and build yours again or get a newer vehicle? Thanks
Between the 2 years, I would pick the 04 but between the 04 escape and a newer non escape vehicle, I would do the newer vehicle. I had an absolute blast with my escape but the poor gas mileage and constant repairs wore me down.
@@NoahHitt Thanks. I'm trying to stay under $18,000, have more space than a car, good gas mileage and decent towing capacity. The escape seems like it checks all those boxes, but I've been looking into alternatives also. I'm coming from an old 2002 Wrangler, so having off road capability would be a bonus.
Nicholas Smith I have a 06 Escape Limited 4WD with the V6 motor I get about 12L per 100km top of the line truck and I think it’s a great city and towing vehicle as I have the tow package which allows 3500lbs of towing instead of 1500lbs that every other escape can tow, even with the same motor, they added a transmission oil cooler which is why I can town 3500lbs but honestly none of these trucks new or old can compare to a Jeep because a Jeep is a true 4x4 the Escape is 4wd so it’s always running 2wd until it detects slippage, sometimes it can be to late and your already sideways trying to get control I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and that thing was a beast it pulled my dads cargo van that had about 4000lbs of tools in it out of a ditch with 3 feet of snow with no sweat. If I were you I would get the 04 given your two options because the newer Escapes are pretty but they don’t have the aggressive ness of the 04 what you will save in gas with the 2018 you will lose with depreciation of the car just my opinion! Cheers
I have almost 250,000 miles on my '02. Built like a tank. When you replace the alternator put a new timing chain cover gasket on.
I’ve got an 05 with almost 300 and after putting on plugs and a new battery I now realize it’s the alternator:(
My 05 3.0 has 185k miles on it and It still runs amazingly
I had a squeeky dash once. Best fix I found was some spray silicone lube. The rubbing plastic stopped making noise.

I have a 05 Mazda tribute. I'm wanting to lift up. Can it be lifted up enough to put 38.5 tires on it
Hey Noah thanks for your videos.
Cheers
I have a 09
