I’m sure that there’s a wood carver out there that could carve a copy of the car using that piece of wood.

First!! Evening all! Hope everyone has a lovely weekend, sadly no F1 this weekend. I can see Peter why you thought it could be saved. My Dad use to own a 996 Porsche 911 Turbo X Pack and the day it was sold was really sad, funny how cars can be connected to so many emotions and memories.

I've just seen Charlie Clubman on sale on Auto Trader! (HJ69 FYT) To quote the advert "This vehicle has been recorded as a CAT N due to a mechanical fuel issue. There was NO damage to the body of the vehicle and the mechanical work was carried out under warranty at MINI dealership" , Hmm?? thought it hit a log and was wrecked!!

Hi Pete, I do understand the emotional connection to your car. I was leaving work when a drunk driver hit me head on at 70mph. I had to be cut out of my car and, as the medics carried me to the ambulance, I turned my head and saw my car, roof cut away, front wheels misaligned and the front of the car destroyed with fluid everywhere. Had the car two years, not a scratch and very low mileage. Although I sustained injuries, I had more concern for my car, and yes I did have a few tears. Glad your wife is fine considering, and you of course.

And i never thought i would feel like saying goodbye to a dear friend. It got me everywhere, to work, to my family, to different countries and never had a single issue. This absolutely breaks my heart. I purchased a 2022 JCW Clubman, "Benny," last year, influenced greatly on your testimony to how cool Charlie was. I have been extremely pleased with my purchase!! You have the right perspective, though, at least Mrs. PP is well and otherwise unharmed, thankfully!! I understand being emotionally attached to a car to the point of tears. My previous 2006 JCW Cooper had seen me through some very hard times like a cancer diagnosis and I also made a lot of memories and new life-long friends. So I get the emotions and MINIs are notorious for becoming part of one's being! I hope your new car will bring you joy and many memories! Best wishes from the other side of the pond!

What concerns me most is that log must have formed part of some careless clown's unsecured load that could have caused a fatality. Although I have always fastidiously looked after my cars, the only one I was ever emotionally attached to was my late grandfather's Triumph 1300 that he bequeathed to me as this was my last connection with him.

So sorry for your loss but I'm glad Mrs. Petrol Pad was not hurt. I can relate to your ordeal when about 7 years ago, something similar happened to my beloved 2005 A4 (B7) at 80 kmph on a dual carriageway when a pallet flew off a lorry in the next lane - all caught on camera by my car cam. I couldn't avoid it that split second as there were cars behind me and in the next lane so I ploughed through it with my family in the car. Cut a long story short, suspension was rebuilt plus a new Rieke bumper (last one was smashed to pieces) but it never felt like the same car.
I don't have a suggestion for your log but I have one for Charlie if you still have access to it - remove any salvageable mods, keep one or two of your favourites as momento and sell the rest to others so they can enjoy the fruits of your labour and love.
I know you didn't ask us to guess what your next car will be, but I am guessing it could be electric and probably something along the lines of an MG perhaps?

Strange that I did not really know what car to go for next, I am fortunate to have another car but that has such a special place in my heart as I was only able to buy due to money I received after my wife passed away end of 2018, so bitter sweet. Anyway I have been subscribed to your channel for sometime but never watched the Charlie vlogs until now and as a result have purchased a Clubman JCW and waiting to collect. Ped, I totally get being emotionally attached to a car. After 16 years trouble free motoring in my beloved Volvo V90 (final iteration of the 960 estate), my wife had a minor accident. The insurance company (Admiral, though never again) insisted that as the repair bill would be way above its value it refused to have the car repaired. Despite an independent engineer privately assessing the cost of repair was well within Admiral's requirements , the insurers still refused. The car sat in my garage while I decided what to do; in the end I reluctantly concluded that whatever it cost would be better spent on a replacement car. The V90 had been with my family through the school years, around Europe and the UK; on the day it was trailered away for scrapping I had a tearful moment of genuine sorrow.

I feel your pain Ped.....I bought my dream car in 1994...a new Porsche 928 GTS in Midnight blue...Savanna beige leather with blue piping...and the Porsche special split rims...had 3 faultless years with it driving all over Europe. Then, in Moving house too deep in the sticks, the wife decided we need a 4x4, just in case of inclement weather...so we sold the 928 and the actual dealer bought it....fast forward 1 month, I was really pining for it ...went back to the dealers to buy it back....already sold, but they said they would contact the new owner...following week the dealers rang back to tell me the sickening news that the 928 had been totalled by a tree...absolutely gutted, and to this day I still feel a pinch.

Noooooooo!! RIP ‘Charlie Clubman’. Sad to see the Clubman come to an end, especially after such an innocuous item did the damage. Glad that Mrs PP is ok. Loved watching all the videos you made with ‘Charlie’. Looking forward to the reveal of ‘Charlies’ replacement. Keep bringing the great content to the channel.

Evening people, so sorry to hear that news Pete, but the main thing is that Mrs Ped is ok and cars can be replaced, the 2 things that stick in my mind with Charlie is obviously the Mud flaps, love em or hate em and the car vid of the de chroming of the trim, it just showed your excellent diy skills 👍😜

My wife and I were driving at highway speeds in the US, when a very large hitch assembly bounced from a pickup truck ahead of us and it took out both right wheel of my new 2021 Subaru Crosstrek! Absolutely no under carriage damage, but a tow required and weeks to find two new rims. Did I mention my wife was terrified! I feel your pain! All good now!

You're right Pete. There's more serious stuff going on in the world. However, for most people empathising with war and other struggles is difficult. As petrolheads we can however empathise with something we share passion about I.e. cars that we've ploughed our hearts and soul into. Chin up, and maybe now is an opportunity for something different! The main thing is that no-one was hurt.

I don’t think it is just the cars we miss, it’s the direct connection that they gave us to events where they were part of the story. To lose a special car through a meaningless accident must hit particularly hard.

    Gutted for you.
We collected my wife’s JCW convertible on 31/12, and on the 19/3 I hit a pothole at around 50mph in Cannock Chase.
I assumed a buckled alloy and maybe some damage to the suspension. The pothole was more like the edge of the road had crumbled but was effectively like hitting a kerb at 50mph head on.
I was seriously in the dog house!
We used Mini Recovery and after around 3 weeks we got it back, £5800 repair bill - claimed on insurance obviously.
I have no doubt that if our car was maybe 6 months older, it would have been touch and go as to whether it was written off - although never told my wife that!
Luckily I let her borrow my JCW Countryman, for the time as I work at home.
It’s amazing though how even in such a short time these ‘machines’ form such an integral part of your life!

So sorry to hear about Charlie! Its one of the cars that got us through lockdown that I have actually seen. My best memories? The removal of the brand name on the boot, the improvements under the bonnet, and of course - those mudguards. What can be done is to make the log together with bits of the sump into some kind of furniture (like a drinks stool) or artwork so Charlie lives on.

  • @stephenwoolmer6094

Hey Ped, very sorry that this happened but as you say, it’s only an abject and everyone was alright. You buying Charlie and your Carvid series got me through the start of Covid and tbh, was one of the reasons I pulled the trigger and bought my 21 JCW Clubman. (That’s a story!) So Charlie’s legacy lives on here in Canada. Take the log, find a woodworker and have them carve you a likeness of Charlie. Paint only the striped and mudflats, leave the rest natural wood. ☺️ Cheers and TY for being authentic.

What a shame, incredible how much damage can be done at such a slow speed too. Cars can be written off really easily nowadays because of the high cost of replacing electronics, sensors, safety equipment etc. A friend of mine struck a small object on the M3 sometime back, the car continued to drive fine. When he got back home, turned out the subframe was damaged, and car was subsequently written off! So sorry Ped for this, but as you say - nobody hurt and cars are metal at the end of the day!

Hello from Sydney, I had a customer some years ago who’s customer had the misfortune to run over a dead wombat in the road late at night. When wombats die, they are very solid, the mess that it made of the little one series was remarkable, it took out the sump too, writing the car off, but took out front and rear bumper bars and most of the cladding underneath too. Poor old wombat, and R.I.P. Charlie Clubman.

Really sad video Pete and I’m so sorry to see Charlie go. Yes there are always ‘worse’ things happening in the world, but you can say that about most things that happen. Christ I curbed a couple of alloys the other day and I was gutted. We do form emotional bonds with our cars. They have a sole and become a part of our lives, some more than others. When we have a car that just ticks all the boxes, we love our time sat behind the wheel and looking back as it sits proudly in our driveway. Charlie was clearly that car to you and Tracy. RIP Charlie, you will be missed 😢

Bummer! Glad you, your better half and the hounds are OK. Not nice having a write off. 10 years ago my Civic Hybrid had a mild rear 3/4 swipe and was written off. Insurers wouldn't repair it, and I loved the car. Reluctantly moved on. Years later I discovered you could see MOT records online so I looked up the registration for no real reason. To my anger, the car had been repaired and had clocked up 90000 miles, so it must have been used as a minicab! Road debris......Last year ended up with a 10 inch strip of metal going through an under tray but no other damage, as some idiot didn't fix their ladders on properly Doh! Looking forward to your new ride Sir!

As car guys we do let our cars get under our skin as we invest our time money and effort into them and have an emotional attachment to them - especially Minis for some reason. Sorry to hear about the Clubman Peter. The number one thing is your wife is ok. The shocking thing about the Mini being wrote off is it looks fine from the outside. My favourite moment was you driving the Clubman at the auto test. It showed l what the car was capable off as well as driving home. Great car and great memories. Turn that log into a plant pot and grow something. Turn a negative into a positive.

We had one write-off, Even when you know its a write-off, the air-bags going off are a giveaway! Its still a shock. Then there is the hassle of replacing your car in a hurry....
But, as you say, no one was hurt and there are far more important things going on in the world.
    Looking forward to the reveal

Main thing is everyone is okay. I think it’s the memories of places you go enjoying the car which gives you that emotional attachment. Last week, I was interested to see how good that car vertical report is so I did it on my first decent car i bought back in 2011 only to find it was written off in 2020. I admit, i was pretty gutted even though I’d sold it 6 years ago!!
