Jamie said he included Flock mode so there was an official variant for 6-7 players since he knew people would do it on their own with the two new player colors.
This expansion is easily house-ruled into a cooperative duet that gives us the pretty combined yin-yang symbols everyone wants to see: Scrap the only one player can occupy a space on the map rule and replace it with the goal to get all 30 tokens out onto the map in paired yin-yangs. For added challenge: play as above but against the automa, where the automa can steal map spots, occupying them exclusively, as in the original rules (use cubes from unused player colours for the automa's spots) + both human players need to score higher than the automa.
They could do avialae or something like that. (clade representing a closely related ancestor of modern birds) I think it'd be a little out of place as an expansion though.
I will say I've never felt like I'm fighting over food like you say. 2 food for wild, constantly rerolling, and being able to roll the feeder when the faces are the same you can pretty much get what you want easy. Add nectar and who cares about the dice. I agree about the Ying yang symbols. Weird but minor
++ New bird cards! + New interesting bird abilities + No nectar nonsense - more player count, eh sure. Doesn’t really matter Already love Wingspan with 2 players. So that’s fine, may use variant, maybe not Excited to try this.
Very helpful video. I pre-ordered the nesting box then realised it was bonkers for the price (£100+). I only have the base game + Europe (which also added extra end of round scoring options btw not just more birds). probably going to pick up Oceania when I can for a cheap price but will be waiting on Asia to drop in price before just adding essentially more birds (as I usually play at 3-4 players).
Interesting for the 2 player version of the Asian expansion that the person who "loses" the end-of-round goal then goes first. I feel there is an advantage to not going first because it could be an extra turn that someone else's move allows you to place eggs, gain food, draw cards, etc. to have more "goodies" and flexibility by the time it is your turn. Although I guess the advantage to going first is first crack at the new face up bird cards.
Would this be great just as a stand-alone or is it better to have the other birds? Is it ok to use Asia as the base game then add the other expansions?
"Duet" is completely the wrong name for the 2-player game. Jamie says it relates to the theme because of birds singing, but birds also use their songs for territory and as warnings, so "Duel" is much more logical and just as thematic. Terrible name choice, but I will be buying it without hesitation 😊
Can you just get the new cards and add them to the base game? What about the other way around, can you take the base game (and Europa) cards and add to the two player version? Thank you
Id kinda like an expansion that adds a new column. So we can play more birds. Change the game to accommodate that easier or not, i just like activating a bunch of abilities
Got Wingspan Asia for Christmas and have only played it once so far (in duet mode). I have all previous expansions. Overall, I’m having a fantastic time with it. Some good and bad things: (+1) Having less food scarcity is a great change that makes the game a whole lot less frustrating. And it’s executed without using the divisive nectar. (+2) I’m always down for more beautiful bird cards. (+3) I might like the new round end duet board better than the original. (-1) Sad to see plastic eggs go. Getting my hands on those eggs is one of the things that drew me to Wingspan in the first place. Though I understand the developer’s reasons, the wood eggs are not as satisfying to use. (-2) Not enough eggs supplied to use the game as a standalone. (-3) At least give some walls to the dice board. Stupid to just roll onto a small slab of cardboard. (-4) What were they thinking giving us ONE little tray to hold tokens? If we got two more at least we’d be able to hold all of the food types and the eggs. So yeah. I feel like they were being kinda chintzy on components, but the game is still super-fun.
I have no problem playing games, especially wingspan at 5, 6, or 7. My problem is it divides people into two groups. Just play that many like a normal game of wingspan without the added fiddliness.
A bummer that people who won’t be playing at low or high player counts are forced to fork out the cash for components they’ll never use. I won’t be supporting this product, but would totally be in the market for just the birds.
He gave a couple of reasons already. You may just not draw the cards that match the scoring goals, there may never be the food you need available when you need it...so you can have a very meh game through no fault of your own. It can also be very Solitaire. These are all perfectly valid reasons, and he's far from being the only person to voice this opinion. Different people have different tastes, such is life. 😁
Really good point that I hadn’t thought about - one “issue” with super popular games is that when they’re about to hit the table, everyone flocks to them (pun intended) and wants in. And so you’re stuck playing them at max players which isn’t always ideal; especially as games are increasingly offering 5 and even 6-player options. So I think my rating of Wingspan was fairly low given I always had to play it at 5, but when I play with just one other person, on BGA with two other people, or bring it to a game night with 2-3 other people, I like it a lot more.
Well I am still not sure after watching the review if I want this or not. Oceania wasn’t to my taste and I am unsure if this is. Oceania made it “too easy” to get out birds and this sounds like it has a hint of that too?
I think in the base game the score for eggs is too high. It seems are better option to put eggs than birds, specially in the last few turns. Maybe 1 point for each two eggs would it be a better rule? Thank you for these videos, they are very insteresting. Congratulations for the channel.
Thanks for the video. Though you made it clear you didn't try nor review the 7 player mode, I found the title suggests you did and favour the 2 player mode to the 7 player. Catchy title but kinda misleading. That said, not sure I'd play it that way either, though I expect a big game day this Saturday and had my Asia expansion arrived in time (in it's Nesting Box), I may have pulled it out. I am becoming more and more disappointed about the yin and yang tokens not being used more thematically appropriately, particularly as you point out that along with the 'duet' variant name those tokens are also misleading. On the positive side, I appreciate the overview of the new birds and their powers, excited for that! I've also enjoyed Wingspan at 2p and look forward to trying this new variant as well! Interesting how you two rated it, a bit of flopping your impression from the base game, so maybe this one will provide for an even wider appeal for the game!
after playing hundreds of 2-players games, the fight for the board is possibly the best part of the game. sucky that the yin-yang design was poorly implemented but the fight for the area is a great design. my biggest problem is it feels like there could have been 2 more tiles pretty easily to add more variety to the bonus goals
Unless I misunderstood Chris, I don't think those really count as push your luck since they give you binary rewards, it's not like you pick to stop at a partial reward to avoid the chance to end up with 0.
No interest in trying 6-7 players, but interested into making a house rule flock mode for 4/5 player games. And same comment regarding the duet and shape of the wooden pieces, weird design choice. Plus, I really would have loved a 2 player coop mode so bad, maybe next expansion using those same wooden pices.
I am really surprised by the decision-making with this expansion. At a time when the cost of living is going up and with high shipping costs, this expansion doesn't make sense. The 6-7 player flock mode seems more of a niche thing, the majority of players will probably never play it The Duet mode might be ok, but Wingspan works perfectly at 2 players anyway so why was another 2 player variant needed. I think most people would have been just happy with more bird cards and it would have kept the costs down. If needed the Flock mode and duet could have been sold as mini-expansions, that way anybody that wanted the 2 player or 6-7 player mode could get that mini-expansion. This way some of us wouldn't have to spend more money on components that will never get used.
yes! someone said it. 4-5Player Wingspan is so long and boring, there are better games to play with 4-5 players that take the same amount of time or less and don't have nearly the amount of Luck of the draw this game has. this game is also annoying because by the Middle of Round2 I already know weather I have a chance of even actually winning... which knowing this so early in this game is especially frustrating because I know I'm wasting another Hour or longer just to lose, which is why this game needs a Catch up mechanic there shouldn't be a time where one player scores 120+ while another only scores 85-95. there are so many birds, but at the same time if you don't get one of few great starter birds your handicapped so hard. This game needs to give all players a Starting hand of like 3 birds along with another 3 random birds. if you don't get lucky round one and get out Passive Food/Eggs/Tuck+Draw/Play a Bird card as an extra action abilities or Great cross habitat birds *eggs/cards in Forest, cards/food in prairie, eggs/food in water* you pretty much have to get it beginning round 2 or it's too late and you'll have no chance of winning.
Wingspan needs to have the players score the game at the beginning of Round3 and have Birds with Brown/White powers mutate once the game gets into Round3 an example of these powers would be like "You may tuck 1, then Draw 1at the end of your turn / After Round-3 Scoring If your in 20+ points behind 1st Tuck 1-2 behind this bird, then Draw that many. tweaking the powers so they don't get too broken obviously
Duet? No. They should've just called it Lovebirds. You don't even need a PhD in birdology to know that Lovebirds suggests a two player bird themed cooperative experience.
"People got hoodwinked" ... What a preposterously condescending, insulting and ridiculous comment. You can't simply say that you don't enjoy the game as much as others. You have to demean people for enjoying the game. Pathetic.
The two player mode is literally a tiny variant on the game, hardly worth a $40 investment. Its not like two player wingspan was bad before hand. Flock mode is so bad....... So so so bad. Would have rather had a small bag of the Asia birds. 4/10.
Two thumbs down on this comment!! 😂 It isn’t just a 2-player or 7-player expansion. It’s a normal sized expansion with more of the same. I’ll have to see about the duel mode, but this is at least a travel-friendly version.
Wingspan is already a game that's best at 2 (and I refuse to play above 3) so this expansion just feels pointless. A few of the card powers seem interesting, hopefully they get reused in the next expansion :)
Tom is wrong! This game needs to be played at 7 players - played it twice in my board game venue at 7 players and was really successful and very interactive both times!

Yes!

This seems like a good opportunity for some house rules to make it an actual "duet" game instead of a duel game.

Lol nectar is amazing

I wish they just made an expansion of more bird cards. Not a whole 2nd game with expensive components....running the price up.
They're releasing the Asian cards only separately later
I thought that was only for the large print version.
