I Bribed Him With Cookies To Get This Memorable Video Interview. Here's How To Do It

- Yes I did. I admit it. I bribed him with cookies because as a veteran documentary filmmaker, I knew the value of recording a child just being himself and how much that would mean to him, and his children, and his children's children in the future. Legacy is very important as it helps people know who they are. When you record a child with audio and video and let them be themselves, it becomes valuable for them to see a later point in their lives, and for the people who come after them.
But how to do this? Although he is the son of a documentary filmmaker, he did not love being videotaped. So I took him to a local coffee shop and we sat together and just fooled around together. When he looks at this video today, now that he is 16 years old, he finds it interesting but when asked, cannot remember that easy-going fun kid as he finds being a 16-year-old boy far more challenging with so many questions that make life for him at least right now, less than the easy-going fun he demonstrated in this video.
You see in the video that I also record myself and just a little bit, my relationship to him as we speak. If I ask him questions, he can ask me questions. He loved that. He still does when we sit down to talk together.
Recording young children on the ski slope, or at a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, or just posing for the camera, isn't the same thing as doing a video interview. When asking questions and answering them a child gives a sense of who they really are. What they are thinking. And when you see a child having fun in front of the camera and kidding with you as my son does in this video, you begin to get a sense of who the person is. I can't say that enough. Legacy is important. If you leave your children and the folks that come after them in your family, a vase that you bought in Italy, or money, or a photograph, within generations, those things have very little meaning. I have seen this happen time and again. But when you record meaningful dialogue which includes clear audio, the results last and I am old enough to have recorded people in my lifetime who are now showing my recordings to their grandchildren.
If this video gives any of my subscribers a sense of how they can record their loved ones, that would be satisfying to me and that is the reason that I am posting this.

He knows how to define privacy! Good !!
I love mommy when she makes me food, my heart beats. 🥰 😁
I love that he looks off and ponders the questions before answering! He's not just giving answers that he thinks you want to hear. "I love her so much my heart beats." Pure gold.
I agree, Linda! That was priceless!
I know, I heard that and immediately remembered myself and my mother, gone to soon...
Nothing more beautiful than capturing kids just being themselves before 'adult' worries enter their consciousness. Very well done and what precious memories captured forever!
Jajaja... Anytime you want to interview me just bring the cookies, and it's on🤟🏼🍪
😄💕
Your son was such cutie at this age! Thank you for sharing this! 💕
Simpler times. Certified Father Son bonding time.

Thank you for sharing this part of your life together.
What a beautiful child Davy was! He actually looked a lot like my son did at that age. I hope he is still happy and enjoying his life. Has Davy done well in school, David? I teared up when he said he didn't want to go to school because he misses Mommy. My son did not want to leave me to go to school. On his first day of Kindergarten, I hugged him and wished him a wonderful day, but when I walked back to my car I turned around to find him standing right behind me! I was understanding, but took him back to class. That was the first day of many years of struggles and heartbreak. Teachers and counselors tested him repeatedly and tried to help, but they could never figure out what the problem was. In the end, he taught himself to read and became a self-taught scholar. He reads everything from ancient history to oceanography to medical journals. He was recruited by a tech company after only a year and a half of junior college. He has been a senior engineer for one of the top internet companies in Silicon Valley since 2010. He finally diagnosed HIMSELF with Asberger's just a couple of years ago. He is brilliant, kind and successful and many people love him. He wanted a family, but has never figured out how to even start a relationship, so he lives alone even though he doesn't want to be.
Dave he is 16 and in school where he gets good grades but doesn't love the experience. He is still sweet but so much of a teenage boy. Everything is just "okay" except his friends who are mostly online. Thank you Susannah.

This was a very pleasant and encouraging video. I wish more people understood that children are people. My parents did not.
Thanks for sharing this. 👍
💕
What a precious moment in time that you captured with your beautiful son. I wish I could have captured so many moments of my loved ones lives. You have so many great videos, but this one is among the best!
Hello David,
This video of you and your son is heartwarming for sure. He is a adorable, I don't have my parents and both brothers are gone too. I wasn't able to have children, so it was nice to see the love you and your son are sharing., take care of each other and I wish you both much happiness and that all good things in life come to you and your family..
Kindest Regards,
Debbie
Keep and hold those minutes.
They ARE irreplaceable 🙏🏻🙏🏻💕
The chocolate goatee SENDS me😭😊
He loves his mama ,hates school, and loves his privacy. He may possibly be my spirit animal
You're so blessed 💕 i miss my son at that age, he's 30 now!
we all do :D eventually they start talking back....lol
I absolutely adore this! There is nothing like filming a child just being who they are without all of the hang ups we have as we grow up.
"Because I love Mommy ..." Awww, my heart! 💓 And what a lovely son you have!
Omg Davey was adorable! I love this video and I really think it's a great idea to do this!
I'm 67, childless, and miss my opportunities with my nieces, my sister's kids. Now she has passed and they are grown up and moved away. Still, I love this video and I especially enjoyed reading what you had to say about it and why you are sharing it. I've been enjoying following you for years now and you always have something interesting and informative to say.
Thank you
I feel you, and I think finding ways to be around children is a great thing...(Jesus ya have to watch everything ya say nowadays not in a perv way) lol
Like Father, like son. Your son is a natural. Very enjoyable video :)
I loved this video! And I think it's hilarious that you cover up the coffee pot with a blanket so you don't wake up anybody. Thank you for this glimpse of your father-son history.
So touching.
Great Video! What a nice little boy.👍
You are a great dad, David. Your kids are so lucky to have you!
Beautiful little face spending time with Papa, listening and learning how to be kind and how to love. Absorbing sage wisdom one drop at a time over time. A torn dollar bill is as good as a fresh one. Another drop just because you asked and you are loved by Papa.
Funny you show this David I’m currently ripping some old vhs tapes with family footage to my Computer. Always brings a smile to my face when you get to relive life’s memories
So lovely the innocence of children. We have confidence the adult world will corrupt them.
" ... like a crappy food place" ...
I roared ! 😂
A priceless, unscripted moment to cherish forever. He is an excellent interviewer and asks insightful questions, btw!
I love little snippets of beautiful life moments like this! How long ago was this filmed?
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker So he was 4 years old at the time of the recording?
This is just delightful! Thanks for making this film.
wonderful 🌱
Amazing, man. Need more loving fathers in the world.
Legacy is important! I'm glad you posted this, from now on I will be much better at it as I record my grandkids! Thanks David👍
Absolutely. It is critical that you take those extra steps and talk with them at length because that will be priceless in the future Jim.

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Amen to that David! I have several old vhs & 8mm videos of my kids growing up, but I didn't have a clue what I was doing as I filmed every single b'day & all of the holidays, I want to be better at it nowadays for my grandkids! This was so cool to learn from!
Nice job Davey
Awww 🥰 lovely. What a thoughtful interview.
💕💕💕 Sheer joy, David Hoffman!!! 💕💕💕
It is a very nice video, thank you.
What a sweetie!! Hey I'll talk for a cookie!! 😊
There’s something so timeless and innocent about watching a child with chocolate stains on his mouth giggling when he gets ‘paid’ for eating cookies.
I thought I heard him say, "...I like to count to 100, but I can't". If I heard that correctly, he had such a great attitude. Kids need to know to try, even if they make mistakes, and perciver. Great video.
what a lucky boy to have a father like this ♡
What a lovely video. Thanks for this.
One of my favorite interviews! Love it.
So cute- what a treasure!
Wholesome content ♥️♥️
Love it! Beautiful child! When David ends the talking is always too soon!
You are probably correct from a legacy point of view but my son and I, from the start, dialogue interrupting one another. It's our style I guess.

He is so cute,😁
The 3 loves of his life. Money, food and mummy.
💕My little boy is 21 and I miss the child he was. This was such a special, special time with your son. We rush through and waste so much of the simple. 😢
Great interviews. Great parenting example. Thanks for sharing this, David.
This is priceless! remind me of myself at that age I too love cookies. it was cute when you let him interview you. too bad we can't go back and capture the innocent, carefree days of our youth. Thanks David Hoffman.
He's a gorgeous little guy. Brilliant video. It's lovely to see the love in your eyes David.
Sweet, precious, smart little boy.
*Thank you for showing us a memorable moment David!*
He’s a natural! He shared his cookie with you too! A class act 😊 I can’t wait to do this with my son. He’s only 15 months old so I have plenty of time to come up with the good questions. When he said he loves his Mom so much, that part got me. What a precious soul. I’m sure you’re very proud of him!
What an awesome way to interact with YOUR child? I'll bet that he is a really good listener now...and he shares. Excellent video.
Thank you I agree whole heartedly David. I have a recording of my daughter at three years old singing, "you are my sunshine", while I played it on my violin. My daughter videoed my grandson on a daily basis from birth to four years because he always wore a 'cape' like one of his heroes, up until Pre-school. He talks to me a lot. Asks me anything - told his third-grade teacher that his grandmother knows everything. I guess because one day he asked about black holes I explained what a black hole is to his understanding. I ask him and he asks me Anything and always a spontaneous honest answer. You wouldn't believe what we have talked about. I pick him up at three o'clock at St. Joseph's School. Love and Peace
Precious and heart warming thank you David. When I was a young child my favorite show to watch would be art link letter because he interviewed the children that were my age or maybe a tad younger. Kids do say the darndest things..... Like when mommy cooks me food my heart beats.....
Perfect. 👍
Priceless~ a great opportunity for him to express himself, have his voice and thought heard- I love it! Im taking something away from this special time you had with your son and then shared it for everyone to see. Ty sir~
So cute 🥰
David…this is precious beyond words. This is, indeed, how you do it. Young parents could learn a lot from this. He asked you interesting questions too. Thanks for sharing this moment with us.🖤🇨🇦
Awww What a cutie pie..., I see a future journalist, and so smart. ♥️
Thank you for sharing.
This is so precious!! You are an AWESOME MAN!!! I love your work!!!😘
Cute kid. I interview my kids and even though it is hard to get them to focus, they are priceless. I do them in the car on the way home from school
A precious moment, thanks for sharing.
Aww...that's great! You're a wonderful dad.
I love how you interview him like a person rather than your kid!
Hey David is that your grandson, if so keep the camera on him he's cute. thanks for sharing David Hoffman film maker.👍👍📸🙂
That is my son Matthew. From my current marriage.

This is beautiful. Thank you. 💐
That was adorable. 🥰
This is priceless!
That was sweeter than the cookie! (Loved his dirty chocolate mouth)☺️
I miss my Dad.
Priceless
This is so adorable 🥹
I'm curious David, you had your son later in life. Did you have any other kids earlier on in life? I am asking as personally I am 32, and all my friends are settling down with families, and as such I am feeling social pressure to do the same. But there is still so much more I want to do in life. I am conflicted between doing what is normal and expected of me (my mom would like Grandkids, for example), and doing what I want to do... I also don't want to "miss the boat" as it were...
Yes. My daughter came when I was 29 years old. So I have that experience. My older son who is from my current marriage said to me though I was both a father and a grandfather at the same time and he loved it. Just food for thought.

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Always a great dad, no matter what time passes!
Thats Jack Harlow, and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Really cute video David......Walt in Miami
I love this!!!!!
Precious 👍🙏🤗
Dave I am confused, how can this young child be your son?
It’s an old video 😂😂
I loved this, your son is a good guy and you are bringing up a good responsible citizen :-), sorry if this sounds formal. D
being this is twelve years ago, it would be great to see a follow up, but wish you guys a great life anyways . D
What a great time capsule.
I have been watching David Hoffmans archives? now for a while and I've come to the conclusion this man should be funded by a trust.
I salute him for saving history as it is so we will not forget and repeat our actions of ignorance.
Americans.. please make noise at the trusts that fund this kind of projects there.
If I knew how to make that kind of noise it's the first thing I would do. I am tired and not doing what I need to be doing because I spent so much time worrying about money and making a living to support my family. For example, if I had a few assistants, I could quadruple my output. Just simple editors working with me. I spent so much time wasting time with hundreds if not thousands more historical moments I am ready to post. Thank you for the thought although I don't think I have come across anyone on my RUclips channel looking at what I do as something a foundation or wealthy individual would support.

I’m with the kid on food. I just want to live on cookies at this point.
hahahaha,.. I have to bribe my grandchildren too!❤️
Thankyou!!!! 🧍🐦
Ah nothing wrong a good bribe that's not healthy for you! That's the best kind of bribe there is!! 😊
💞💞💞💞
💞🤗
This looks like some time in the 90's. What year was this?
2010
B. B. 😼
I didn't see any bribing with the cookie.
How wonderful that this child is mature enough to learn about his father's work ! But shouldn't basic table manners be taught? Not chewing with your mouth open or proper use of a napkin? I guess it's also okay to use swear words too ? Even minor ones it seems is okay these days .
I’m sorry I watched this. All I can think about is cookies and I don’t have any. It’s 2:00am. Oh well, it’s an over the top cute kid. and dad. : ) (I’d settle for a slice of cake, pie, a scoop of ice cream, 1 piece of hard candy, a tablespoon of granulated sugar ((desperate)) but I’ve got nothing) : (
did he become an actor?
He is not interested in acting at this point.
