When my ex-girlfriend and I moved in together, I had two cats and she had a ferret and once we introduced them to each other and showed the cats that the ferret was part of their family, they also knew to be gentler with him than they were with each other because he was smaller. They'd pounce on him but wouldn't use their full weight and they'd lightly play-bite, but not hard enough to hurt him. I was amazed at how nicely they played with him. They even let him chase them around!
o.m.g. i cant believe how gentle and sweet the doggie is with the ferret!!! very smart to recognize its a more delicate creature than himself! so freeking cute!
You have a great dog!! So gentle and patient. Awesome vid!! I love ferrets. They live life like the them from Benny Hill is constantly playing in their heads.
Of all of the ferret videos I've seen on RUclips, this is by far my most favorite. I'm trying to talk my wife into getting me one for Christmas. She has no idea how awesome they are and this video does do them justice!
That’s what I love about ferrets. They know no fear and no matter how much they get tossed around when playing with a dog, they keep coming back for more. So much fun.
I used to have an half Alaskan Malamute half wolf when I was little. He was one of the most beautiful dogs I'd ever seen. This brought back memories of him. My parents had gotten rid of him because we were moving.
When I was a kid, we had a ferret and a little mix breed dog. The two were basically best friends and the only one who ever got hurt was the dog but it made such an impact on the dog that he never got too rough ever again, even after the part that the ferret bit was surgically removed because we didn't plan to breed him.
I've had 4 ferrets and a mixture of dogs together (English bulldog, mini pin, and daschund). All got along great together. The dogs were curious at the start and would follow the ferrets around the house all the time. It was so funny to watch them interact. The ferrets would literally jump on the back of the bulldog to play. The daschund like to play bite, but never hard. The funniest times was when she would try and drag one of them by the tail, never once hurting them.
Your animals are gorgeous and your dog plays so nicely with your ferret. My dog was a little over zealous with my ferrets at first, but he plays very gently with them now.
I was having a really bad day at school today until I watched this video and as soon as I started watching it I immediately cheered up! I love your Malamute! I thought this video was so cute and it really brightened my day!! I am feeling so much happier! I checked out round 2 and thought that was pretty funny too! I am sending this video to my mom to show her how cute ferrets can be because I want one and she said the only way I can get one is if I pay all the vet bills.. But thanks for sharing!
N'aww, I'm thinking of getting a ferret too. The funny thing is my dog looks and behaves much the same to yours, although I thinkmine is a fair bit younger. But it's reassuring to see how well they get along!
I like how the dog uses such self control, especially since one swipe of his paw if he wasn't could probably kill the ferret. Dog probably thinks its playing with a puppy.
I had two ferrets. Pebbles 1995-2003 and Maggie 2003-2010. Two of the best buddies you could ever wish for. Bertrand (My Yorkie) and Maggie were about as funny a pair as you could imagine. These two are super cute as well. Thank You for sharing such a great video.
this is such a precious video. the dog senses that it has to be so gentle with the ferret and is even conscious of its size...I love it. usually ferrets also sense if their play becomes too rough and they chill out. I bet that ferret would easily climb up on the dog and just rest too :-)
My three-legged cat Schroedinger and huge black lab, Moss, used to play like this. The cat would roll around and bite and scram inside (yes, inside) the lab's mouth and Moss would respond by just rolling on her back, wagging her tail. Whenever the cat would stop, Moss would nudge him as if to say "Don't stop!". They were inseparable until Schroedinger ran away, and Moss hasn't been the same since.
It's amazing how nice the dog was. A few times they could have done major damage to the ferret (like any time the ferret was in their mouth) but didn't. Good job getting them used to each other!
So cute! My current dog would not do well with a ferret. Not that he would hurt them, he just wouldn't know how rough to play with such a tiny creature. I miss having them because they are so much fun to watch! I love how gentle Daxter is even when Mila bites him.
This is pretty impressive for a Malamute. They are known to have strong prey drives, which sometimes makes them and cats, ferrets, birds, mice, small dogs etc., etc. not a great combination. But all dogs are different! I have two Mals - one brother who LOVES kitty cats (even though they aren't too enthused with his big paws), and one brother who just tries to prod them and get them to run so he can chase. Sometimes it's just down to the personality of the dog.
lol, I'm impress with how gentle your dog is. Ferrets can be rascals. My mom used to have ferrets, but we were too nervous to let them play with the dogs. My mom's ferrets loved her, but they would sneak up on me and my dad, and bite us in tender spots, like the soft skin behind our elbows. We were worried our dogs might hurt them, so we kept them seperated. The ferrets were fearless but liked to play rough. Ferrets are cute though. Good looking dog too!
We ferret sat for a friend once and my lab (who normally hates all other animals) and the ferret absolutely loved playing together. They would run around the yard together and pounce on each other...even loved hanging out by the car window together. I want a ferret so bad! Also want a Malamute...one of my fave breeds ever :D *sigh* Sadly it will be several years before I can get either.
This type of stuff amazes me with dogs, that malamute can by all means kill a ferret without trying, but the amount of restraint he's showing here is incredible.
how did you introduce them? i have a chihuahua (which im not too worried about) and 2 ferrets. ive been doing my research and malamutes and huskies have been known to kill small animals because of their instincts. im getting a husky and well.. yeah
Daxter is so gentle to Mila, it's really cute and wonderful how they play with each other. I got a little worried when Daxter pinned down Mila, but she slipped free, and I could breathe again! And Daxter was cheating when he rolled over on Mila, he knows he's bigger, so he did that to try to get the upper paw, lol. And I'm not sure most people know, but wild wolves hunt ferrets as prey, so Mila is being VERY brave playing with an animal bigger than herself, and is a cousin of the predators that normally hunt her kind. Amazingly awesome!
Talk about best buds! :D Pay no attention to any negative comments. They're playing and you've obviously done a great job teaching Daxter to play gentle.
My boyfriend and I want to (FINALLY) get a ferret once we move out of California. We currently have a three year-old border collie, and she's very quick to catch and rough up birds and rodents around our place. Any tips on how I can socialize a new ferret and an adult dog?
Hi, hoHello, I have a ferret who lives freely at home, she lives with two dogs who have had a difficult past. I want to adopt a husky, with whom I could play sports. I would like to know how did you get your husky to live with your ferret? Growing up with the ferret, will he consider her a member of the family/pack?
hi! how did you make it possible? Is it because you bought your dog since 2 months or how? Because a friend borrow me an alaskan malamute and I have a rabbit and the alaskan malamute allmost killed my rabbit.
@DarkMountainWolf Your right about them being a little different, but by definition--"Husky is a regular name for a [type of dog]] used to pull sleds in northern regions" and malamutes were certainly used for this. And I should clear up i do agree they can be taught to play nicely, for animals show affection and hold morals just the same as humans.
Yes, some dogs are naturally friends with other family pets and some are not. You just have to make sure both animals are held securely while you try and 'make them friends'. My pet terrier was fine with my pet rats and would play for ages with them!
I am so curious if it was hard to teach your dog to be gentle with your ferret? I have 4 ferrets and will hopefully get a puppy in a couple years, but it just makes me nervous to have them around each other. I would be devastated if one of them got really hurt. But they (mila and daxter) are so adorable together :)

to everyone saying the dog could accidentally bite the ferret...two things. first of all that dog has his jaw locked and would sooner accidentally wiz hisself before accidentally biting the ferret. but second; ferrets actually have really tough skin that is hard to puncture...part of their makeup. when other ferrets play, they will bite and scratch each other very hard (and ferrets are carnivores, they eat raw meat no problem, very sharp teeth) yet they don't injure each other so.

That dog would eat that ferret in one second if it wanted too
@@doaadaraz185 yea, I'm aware
