"It flowers when it thinks it's going to die." I think my parents might have had this in mind when they were raising me, lol. They fed me well enough, but they made me study until I felt like I was going to die. 😂
I had a huge hoya carnosa 30 years ago. Now I got one as a birthday present 🥰 and have purchased 2 other hoyas. I love them cause they remind me what to do/not to do to make them thrive from my grandmother 👵
I like this quick tip format as a reminder of the basics for when I may not have time to watch the longer, more in-depth videos on each plant topic. Hoyas are fantastic, too. I picked up my first ones recently and am really enjoying the way they grow :)
Perfect timing! I just bought my second Hoya, the first was a gift and nearly died, so here I am making damn sure it doesn't happen with my Sweetheart Hoya 💕
Hi I am vvv impressed and satisfied with ur briefing discription on hoya plant...I have one but wasnt sure that's a hoya...but now I know for sure ......thanks a million and God bless you.
Thank you for the tips on how to grow Hoya plants I just starting collecting Hoya and your vedio really is really very helpful to me and everyone stay safe and greetings from California ❤️
Actually hoyas grow quite slow compared to the average plant species. Also you absolutely do NOT want to prune unless the vine on your plant is dead or dying, or if your plant is very large and several years old. If you prune your plant all you will do is keep delaying the time it takes for your Hoya to bloom. On average it takes about 2 years for a Hoya to bloom depending on the age of the plant, the size when you first bought it, it’s growing conditions, and the particular species. When it does bloom, the flowers are born on a short stalk called a spur. The spur remains on the plant even after the flowers fall off, the plant will continue to bloom on the same spur year after year. You never want to prune the spur off. There is a wealth of information on the subject if you want to google it further. 😊
Thnk you for the info. I just recieved a whole cup full of propagated hoys Bella cuttings , I think it's enough to make a good size plant with . Very excited and tryin to learn what I can, as I am brand new to plants.
idek if that's always true. I had tiny small cuttings and plants bloom and very old big ones that dont. cutting your plant won't change the amount of time it takes for it to bloom but if you cut off a stem with a peduncle then obviously your plant won't bloom because it's no longer available. That doesn't mean it won't bloom from another stem that you didn't cut....
I never cut mine and it’s doing great. Even new leaves grow from the ones that have fallen off in pot. I know nothing about plants and it’s completely fine. The showing off before dying is nice because then I water it 🤷🏽♀️
Hijo, Your videos help me and my friends with caring for plants, thank you. I would like to share that I observed Hoyas (hoya plants) in the wild in the Northern Territory of Australia. Those hoya were growing in rock crevises and were clearly many years old.
I thought that they came from India;however, Hoya Australis clearly must come from somewhere in Australia with a name like Australis-Right? I think they might be in New Zealand and maybe even South America. They are ruthless vines. Mine strangle each other and grow up each other. It's odd. They would grow great on a trellace. They love to get super strong light to produce a lot of flowers. And they smell powerful-Powerful!!! Like Jasmine and honeysuckle combined. counted 31 flowers on mine today. The nectar that they produce is delicious and hummingbirds love it.
Got my first hoya this past June. I think it is nicknamed "Hindu rope". It grows so slow, but I see new shoots and I moved it outdoor under a covered patio. It's good to know that they like to dry out in between watering. I'm at Northern California and the humidity is very low most of the time.
Put your hoya in a 2 gallon pot. Give your hoya lots of water. Fertilize your hoya with Calcium and SuperThrive Give your Hoya strong super bright high level light. I have seen them in California in direct hot baking sunlight where the leaves turn golden-not green Hoyas need strong but not direct sunlight on the leaves. They should always go in a window where they will flower, be Very fragrant and drip the sweetest nectar that hummingbirds truly love. In California a hoya would love a trellace or to hang under lattice. Hoya Purpafresca is a good variety but Hoya Australis is the go to variety that produces the flowers with the most sugar-be careful of your carpeting. When in bloom put a towel under your plant. Mine is in full bloom now with 31 blooms. By the way when that many blooms are fading they kind of smell diaperish-Warning.
Thanks for your advice. I have about 70 plants in my house and healthy but I bought Hoya 1 st time and hope it will grow. It was nearly dead half price at Asda and label was bonsai and I notice later after 2 weeks is not bonsai. I did photo on my phone and google told me is Hoya. So hope it will grow. Thanks x
I love the way you said cut when you were talking about pruning when you said “.....and when you make that CUT!!!....” That is exactly how I feel each time I make that cut!!! I feel determined and positive and resolute but mildly but distinctly horrified at the same time!!😳
I’ve had a hoya rope plant (Hoya carnosa 'Crispa’) for about 12 years. It is beautiful, a show stopper, healthy and grows but it certainly doesn’t grow fast enough to need pruning. I have yet to prune it.
Thanks for the informative concise video. I must say I have tried a lot of the tips you explained, but need advice as to whether I should re pot my hoya to slightly bigger pot? It has bushed out but no flowers. Any more tips plz? God Bless you always
FATSIA JAPONICA next please, just got the 'spiderweb' version which was a little more expensive than the regular stuff^^ exceptionally beautiful leaves tho.
Hej!! Great video!! Thank you so much! I inherited my mom’s Hoya’s when she passed & it’s like having her around to have them! They started to look a little unhappy after we moved a few times - so appreciate this! One of the plants is from when I was a teen (I’m in my 60’s now ;) so … I want to keep them happy. What kind of would do they prefer? We are going to try propagating a few doing water propagation. Do you think that’s good? Tak! 😊😊
I have an apartment in Manhattan that gets very little light. What hoya variety does best in lower light? I will lower my expectations for flowers accordingly
Great video been sort binge watching your videos👍🏻 I’m wondering if you could do à video on Areca palm ( guldpalm) and Peace Lilly’s ( fredskalla Strauss). Recently purchased them and I just would like to know general care, light, water requirements and things that can go wrong.
Can I put a Hoya in a hanging basket under The eave of the house..mostly shade..but maybe a bit of direct sun in the afternoon? It gets hot where we live in summer (Houston, TX)… I would bring inside if too hot.
Hi and thank you for all the information all I need to know how often this plant is blooming because I had it for almost more than 20 years and once a year has a flower and my second question is can I change the pot? Or depends on the season of the year! Many thanks
My Hoya Australis growing so fast but now I’m in a middle of sun but the plant stop growing don’t know why I’m still doing the same of caring , any suggestions, and thanks for your nice informations
Valuable tips..! Please keep making such videos. A humble request: Can you please make a care video on Stephanotis floribunda? I have two plants, one suffering from pest attack and another plant has given me only 3 buds this spring. Thank you in advance 😊🙏🏼
Thank you for this video, I'm facing a problem with my house, doesn't bloom at all, i have one more then 5 yrs and getting will but no bloom, what is the fertilizer for that please, i don't want to throw it out door
do you guys have any videos/tips on how to make your plant leaves shiny? there's been a lot of information on how to do it from neem oil, soap, lemon water, etc but I'm not entirely sure and I don't want to kill my plant kids 😭
Pruning a prolific Hoya!! That's a new one😳 This plant doesn't need to be prune at all. All you need is to train the new runners on the tralis and wait for it to produce new leaves and peduncles.
Is it ok, i recently repotted my hoya in a pot with coco pole at the center. And then I tied around the pole the vine of hoya until it cover the pole upward. Will the hoya grow comfortably in that setting?
Could you please help me on how to use pumice for Hoya. Do I add Akadama as well? I watched the Pumice video you made but I am not sure whether that mixture works for Hoya. Mine is the Hoya Polyneura… Thank you…
Very useful tips ... but still didn't help to find a clue why my hoyas are struggling or even dying. Plants are in very coarse soil, well-aerated and well-draining; placed in bright shade; new shoots appear often but very soon after, they lose leaves and stop growing any further, dry and dye. Sometimes all leaves turn yellow, drop, and the whole plant dyes back. I suspected not enough watering considering well draining soil but from what I keep hearing hoyas like drying, as you said too. Why then my hoyas struggling ?!
Still here binge watching 😁. Im wondering if u could do a video on plants that are good to have by the window sill? There is a lot of plants that don’t like direct sunlight ( or not the ones that I have). All of my windows get direct sunlight at some point of the day but probably the longest light that shines in is the afternoon sunlight. Also having plants on the window sill right above the heating element is not either good because of the heat and dry air right? So I’m just confused of which plants is ok to have in the window sill? Or maybe many are ok to be placed by the window u just care for them differently? Would love to hear your opinion on it and even some examples on plants that thrive in the window sill.
Stelizia nicolai, they love sun, get super large and are super expensive, BUT if you get a cute small one for cheap it will be perfect. after a couple years you either move it due to increasing size or consider it a long term investment^^ edit: and Beaucarnea recurvata pops to mind aswell
In both your hoya video you didn't mention about hoya propagation. That is one of the most important thing to know about any plant. Without learning that it remains incomplete. Don't you think so?
It doesent apply to all hoya!!!! Most of them dont have this shiny layer like australis, it doesent mean it sick or you should choose another one. NOT all of them like to dry out between watering. There are thin leaf hoyas wich like it a little bit on the moist side (not soaking, but dont let them be bone dry) And there are hoyas who dont like that much light to grow fast
“Hoyas grow fast” NOT MINE 😢😢😢😢 they’re both acting like they’re fake plants, can I fertilize them???? I’m afraid to harm them but want them to grow!!!!
"It flowers when it thinks it's going to die." I think my parents might have had this in mind when they were raising me, lol. They fed me well enough, but they made me study until I felt like I was going to die. 😂
😂😂😂😂
I'm sure they meant well
Hoya has been my first and only plant, I noticed this this “flowering when it thinks it’s going to die” It’s beautiful & strong of the plant.
That is where "Oh my precious little flower" comes from.....
😂😂😂
Hoya’s are my new favorite plants. Thank you for the insights!
This is a great video. Thank you so much for the great explanations.
Love hoas. Great tips.
Greetings from Tasmania Australia, thank you for these succinct hints - my Hoya loves you! ❤

I took a cutting from a 25 year old plant, how long have to wait until it blooms?
always good as always
Great tips 😌🤲💞I like how you emphasis; drying out the hoya before the next watering. That always works in every problems

I almost always choose plants who don't look good to reanimate them.

Wow what is that big dark-leaved climber on the left of the screen. Reminds me of a Heart leafed philo but very dark

So what happen to that part you prune or cut. Can I put it in water (for propagation)?
Yes.
