- Grand Master Jhoon Rhee encourages several martial arts students and instructors to try and block his punch. He even offers a reward of $100.00 to anyone who can block his punch.

first of all rip grandmaster, i had the honor to test for black belt back in the 90s up in the dc area back in the 90s. took me 1 test, 1 pretest then on third attempt finally got the black belt in his system (i think i still have on dvd somewhere that whole test). but it was always a good time meeting and chatting with him when giving the chance. really a kind soul
He was not only great warrior, also a great soul! I was blessed to meet him in Kiev and Moscow in 1990s. He was generous heart, taught me some punching and kicking tricks I still appreciate very much. I came from boxing background, had 171 amateur fights, he could see I was fast, balanced on my feet gave me a really fine tuning advise. Whenever I think about him and his brother, always feel great good fire of gratitude in my heart!!
You can tell Bruce Lee taught him how to punch because he said it his self and the way his form is it’s just like Bruce
Yes you are right. Master J.Rhee said it himself in documentary Bruce Lee & him were good frens and learnt from each other. He also said he'd never want (dare) fight Bruce Lee . These 2men are real experts.

Master Jhoon Rhee's psychological techniques were very effective in this demonstration.
Pure efficiency in motion. No telegraphing whatsoever.
I wish they turned it around as well: have the students punch and have Jhoon Rhee attempt to block.

That's the whole point of teaching. He's not showing off, he's demonstrating to peak interest and then teach.
It's a simple yet effective way of punching. In fact I'd argue it's more simple than a Boxers Horizontal Jab, of course you should still use Boxing.

As fast as he was with the 3 TKD students. It's one thing to be fast in a demo. But another to be fast enough in the ring in a full-contact fight. :)

Oh 💯. Technique only gets you so far in Sparring/Kumite. Boxers don't land always land Textbook Punches that they trained for thousands of hours, but it's still important.

Boxing style punches.
Surprisingly yes and no.
So, this style of punching is very common in boxing today, but it wasn't in the past.
So in some ways, this punch was a mixture of Wing Chun and Boxing. A simple non telegraphed punch down the center line.
Bruce Lee taught this to Rhee, who taught this to Muhammad Ali.
Looking back at old timey boxing footage, and then looking at Ali's era, and then the era after, you'll see how boxing has changed and been refined over time.
There's a lot of cross pollination that people don't realize between martial arts.
@@1Invinc jhoon ree was very open to other ideas as well. He didn’t restrict the art of tkd. I took tkd under some black belts whose teachers could be traced back to him. They were also all very open to other styles and when all of the schools that we would get together to test with were different styles. Most traditional martial arts classes aren’t like that anymore and are just in it for money. They end up teaching people ridged versions of the styles and are too focused on forms. Students from these places don’t actually learn to fight.
@@gatolf2 The funny thing is what Jhoon Rhee does is actually more accurate in spirit and form to the original idea of Taekwondo compared to what we see today.

He is the one that first taught bruce to kick properly. My friend knew John Rhee. He told Bruce "your kicking sucks". He was right. His kicks do suck even though he was my idol.

The trick is to not telegraph the punch.
Pay attention to the fist's trajectory. To throw a punch straight down the center from whatever position it was in without winding up for it.
From the receiver's perspective, it is very difficult to react because by the time you'd notice the punch coming, it's already half way, making it nigh impossible to move to block in time.
The thing about reacting to punches being thrown, often you do not react to the punch being thrown. Rather, you react to your opponent's wind up for the punch, however subtle, and predict the punch based on experience.
For example, if my opponent shifts his weight slightly to his right in a certain way, I could recognise, he is about to throw his right so I just need to raise my left to protect myself. So just as he actually throws his fist, I am already moving to guard my left, only really needing to react to his trajectory in elevation to decide if I need to guard face or body.

When most people who punch who are unfamiliar with martial arts just flail their arm. With a flailing arm it generates momentum but little speed and efficiency. Accuracy and speed start from your feet moves to your hips and extends your arm to strike. Think of it as hitting something with the manual swing of a hammer, as opposed to a mouse trap which is slammed shut with torque after being spun back if that makes any sense...

Was a fun demo. :) But the remark about the girl resecting the $100 bill...WHOOOPS!! Wouldn't have gone over so well today ...or even then...I bet the girl's parents were a little miffed. :) Implying the girl was already a money grabbing golddigger...nothing more...that she'd do anything for S100...almost something a Harvey Weinstein might have said...we all make mistakes...but this one was captured on film and is now on RUclips..
He was making a reference of holding it with both hands. In a lot of asian cultures you recieve with both hands, to no disrespect the giver. The giver can also show giving something respectfully with both hands, such as a business card or what not. It could have been anything handed to her. His mistake was not knowing that most people, not knowing old traditions like that wont get it at all.
Because people are idiots nowadays. Nowhere did this imply that the girl was a "money grabbing golddigger"... all it implied was that the girl was overly careful and responsible to look after that money and not lose it, hence why she was gripping it with both hands like that.
Come on... you're looking too much into something that's light hearted.
