    Fantastic to hear such a fantastic authentic accent. I’m visiting Lerwick in March, and now know how to pronounce it. Thank you so much. I’ll bring my wellies and Mac.

    Fantastic, Laurie! My mum and her family came to Canada from Shetland in the 1920s. I took her to visit in 1999 and after COVID am dying to return! I had to cancel my Up Helly Aa trip Jan 2020. :( Love hearing the Shetland accent! A+ !!!

    I would love to buy you a coffee but you have not replied to me as yet lol. How much difference is there between The Iyland off Arran and the Shetland Iyland. Thank you. I have messaged about three people that live and come from the Shetland but had no reply from anyone yet. I hope I don't talk silly. I am just interested in visiting the Shetland with my two daughters Phoebe 15 Sophie 9 year's old and one day my cat. Thank you again.

    Can you explain why you don’t pronounce the “wi” in LerWIck. Thanks!

    • @shetlandwithlaurie
      @shetlandwithlaurie  3 года назад +2

      It's just a local pronunciation. Many of the place names are pronounced differently than they appear on the maps. Much of the reason for this is because when the map makers visited Shetland, they anglicised the words that they heard.

    I wish there were English subtitles too. I'm an American, and I had a great deal of trouble understanding a lot of what she said! LOL

      Binge watch all five seasons of Shetland and then try again. She is speaking English, but has a bit of an accent. English speakers really are separated by a common language!

      Also if you listen to her podcasts you will be able to understand her more as you learn the Shetland language. Her podcasts are very good.

      Hi Denise, apologies if you struggle with the accent. I felt that subtitles would be distracting - the language is, in essence, English, and if you tune in an ear, you will pick it up much quicker than you would had there been subtitles. I did a podcast all about language and the importance of speaking it - you'll find that on my Shetland with Laurie podcast (available on Spotify and Apple podcasts).

      Thanks Bethene - that is my very best English. Accents and dialects are what make life so vibrant, I love hearing people's accents from all over the world, it's fascinating.
