A trip to Noss with Shetland Seabird Tours
Visiting Noss on a boat trip: Daily boat trips are operated from Lerwick that will take guests into the heart of the seabird colonies, including to one of the most significant gannet colonies in the UK, giving an amazing view of what can be around 150,000 breeding birds.
The boat trips do not allow passengers to land on the island, but they explore the coastlines of both Bressay and Noss, including the Orkneyman’s Cave and Giant’s Leg, an incredible natural arch large enough for a boat to pass through. Both these incredible natural features are on Bressay’s coast and are visited before heading to the Noss cliffs, where the boat trip brings the visitor right into the heart of nature - truly...

A trip to Mousa Broch, Shetland
Просмотров 9185 месяцев назад
No trip to Shetland would be complete without a visit to the uninhabited island of Mousa, off the coast of Sandwick. This incredible island, a 15-minute ferry crossing from the mainland, boasts the best-preserved broch that you’ll find anywhere in the world! The island is an RSPB nature reserve and is home to a large colony of storm petrels. Standing at an impressive 13m (43ft) tall, the broch ...
Up Helly Aa 2023
Просмотров 8459 месяцев назад
Today is Up Helly Aa, and to give you a flavour of the event, I'm sharing a video from last year's event (2023). This includes both the main procession and burning, as well as the Junior procession and burning. Up Helly Aa’s roots can be found in the 19th-century tradition of ‘tar-barrelling’, a practice which saw the town’s young men rolling burning barrels of tar through the narrow streets of...
Visiting the Faroe Islands - Part Two
Просмотров 80210 месяцев назад
Here is the second, and final vlog from our Faroe trip. Faroe is an island that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. It’s a place that Shetland has long had strong associations with, from the Vikings of our Sagas who passed through Shetland en route to Faroe and Iceland to the northwest to the cod hunters of the 19th century who fished these northern waters, returning many months la...

Faroe is an island that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. It’s a place that Shetland has long had strong associations with, from the Vikings of our Sagas who passed through Shetland en route to Faroe and Iceland to the northwest to the cod hunters of the 19th century who fished these northern waters, returning many months later with boats brimming with fish to my own father who f...
A day trip to Papa Stour, Shetland
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
A mile offshore from Sandness, accessible several times a week by ferry from West Burrafirth, is Papa Stour, known locally as Papa. The name comes from the Old Norse language, meaning ‘the great island of the priests’. The island is geologically fascinating, formed from volcanic ash and lava, which is a real gift to hikers seeking the drama, allure and breathtaking vistas offered by the incredi...
A day trip to Skerries
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Год назад
Out Skerries, known locally as Da Skerries or just Skerries, are a small low-lying trio of islands - Housay, Bruray and Grunay - that lies 13 miles off Shetland’s east coast, and four miles northeast of Whalsay. The island is home to around 30 people who are largely dependent on the fishing industry. Bruray and Housay are connected via a road bridge, and Grunay is now uninhabited, although the ...
A walk around Scalloway

Scalloway, nestled under the Gallow Hill, on Shetland’s west coast, is a picturesque village about six miles from Lerwick. With a thriving local community and a population of about 1,200, the village boasts a school, swimming pool, castle, several shops and eateries and an unmissable museum that walks visitors through Scalloway’s fascinating history. Scalloway’s welcome sign states that this is...
A walk around Minn Beach, Burra, Shetland (March 2023)

Today we're going for a walk to the Minn Beach in Burra. We walk to the beach and speak about some of the Shetland TV series filming locations, as well as have a poke around some old crofthouse ruins and speak about the vernacular architecture. This was a lovely walk, and is definitely recommended if you are visiting Shetland! Hope you enjoy this month's video :) To enjoy the full version, sign...
A walk to the Levenwick Broch in Shetland's South Mainland
Просмотров 593Год назад
The spectacular ruins of Levenwick Broch, one of around 120 known broch sites in Shetland, has always intrigued me, and I’m ashamed to say that, after driving up and down the A970 hundreds - if not thousands - of times, It’s taken me 35 years to get there. Precariously perched on the edge of the cliffs, commanding views eastwards across the North Sea, south towards Sumburgh Head and North towar...

It was early January, so the days are short. we left at 10 and were home by 3.30 when it got dark. Driving in Shetland
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Год назад
As requested! When I had my last Patreon Zoom meeting, I was asked to do a simple video about driving in Shetland - so here it is! In this film, I drive around town (Lerwick and Scalloway), tackling roundabouts, junctions, one-way streets and narrow roads. I then head into the country and drive on the main ‘double roads’ that have a 60 mph speed limit, before taking some of the single-carriagew...
The Peerie Neuk, Unst, Shetland - a girly weekend away!
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.Год назад
As the nights start to draw in and the darkness starts biting at my heels once again, it’s hard not to mourn the lighter days and sink into a winter blues-induced coma, burying myself under layer upon layer of cosy blankets and scented candles. So when Melanie from The Peerie Neuk offered me the chance to stay in her tiny eco-home on the beautiful island of Unst, I literally skipped all the way...
A visit to Whalsay; the knitwear, Heritage Centre, fishing and community of an island
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 года назад
Every great adventure starts with a boat, surely? It certainly feels like that as you dart north, rushing to make the ferry on time, watching the clock anxiously and praying you don't meet a tractor en route. The Whalsay ferry has an altogether different feel to the North Isles ferries; the journey is longer, and booking is strongly recommended if you want to ensure you arrive - and depart - on...

My wife and I are from the US (North Carolina) and we fell in love with Shetland during the TV show ( I suppose like a lot of Americans ) and we are hoping to get back to Scotland next year and we will definitely include the Shetlands this time. Great content we will be watching!
Please do a video at Mavis Grind,
I did it one month ago with Shetland Nature. Just Fantastic boat trip. Funny to see the seal at the end <3
Greetings from Australia, thanks for the tour video.
I am so trying to find a way of living in shetland I may fail but hope to relocate
Amazing! 😊
Two changes since the early 1990s. In those days. The Mousa pier was definitely for the adventurers. The boat sailed if farm work permitted.
Been to Out Skerries from Vidlin. The ferry crew strapped our motorcycles down real tight. We encountered a very nice lady who took us to her home for coffee & buns.
Great video, thank you. I was in Shetland three weeks ago and experienced no problems with driving the numerous single track roads. I only had one issue; it took me a couple of days to find my way around Lerwick! Shetland's wonderful!
Good video. I would like to visit and driving on the left appears worrisome to me. Thank you.
Thank you for these insights into Shetland life and history! I would love to visit for the birds and scenery, but for now I am video traveling.
Heading there in July. Thanks for the information
I love Laurie. What a wonderful personality! Thank you for all this enjoyment.
Loved this👍 I am visiting Shetland in beginning of August and will be taking a trip to Mousa. Looking forward to your new book😀
Before the mighty Tesco arrived where did people do their shopping?
I'm really interested in geography, I didn't know about Shetland until I watched the TV series, it sparked my interest in the place. You have interesting videos.
Can you use a british 1st class stamp to post a letter to Shetland from uk?
What a lot of fun!
Don't visit Faroes! Ban Grindadrap!
Five minutes in and I realized you’re on the American passenger side. They got American hire cars out there? Is that what the compass looking sticker on your side of the windshield was for? Remind the yanks which side of the road to drive on?
I’m an American that’s watched Shetland 4x 😂. I thought RUclips would have the cake fridge if it really existed. This is just so awesome. Right now in America, the cakes would be stolen and thieves would vandalize the fridge. I hope to visit someday, it’s on my bucket list.
Looks great
Thank you for this lovely tour of the Faroes. Given I live in the Pacific Northwest of the United States it seems strange to me that I love places like the Shetlands and now the Faroes. There is something magical about being in a remote place and away from the rest of the world. So much dramatic beauty in places with rocky cliffs and sea water washing over them, looking like spilled milk. I hope I can travel to the Faroes someday. But if not, the video certainly gives me the chance to enjoy the wildness of the place.
I live near sound primary school west Vaila leading up to punds

The wind ruined this. Finding one better recorded
What a great idea charging for hiking would be on Skye. Was it easy to find the place to pay and did they take cards?
Yes, it was easy to pay. On the walk we did, they had a little shop that you could pay. Other walks have little cars machines and honesty boxes.
Enjoyed the video Laurie. Faroe is on the bucket list so this was enlightening. Look forward to your next episode…. cheers from Sydney Aus.
Thank you ☺️
I would love to buy you a coffee but you have not replied to me as yet lol. How much difference is there between The Iyland off Arran and the Shetland Iyland. Thank you. I have messaged about three people that live and come from the Shetland but had no reply from anyone yet. I hope I don't talk silly. I am just interested in visiting the Shetland with my two daughters Phoebe 15 Sophie 9 year's old and one day my cat. Thank you again.
Hi I visited the Iyland off Arran it was very nice place to be. I am wishing to visit the Shetland soon. I will be looking for a Guide and advise on we're to stop at for a week or two for myself and my two children and maybe my cat. Thank you. Good video well done. Can you rent a allotment at the Shetland. Cheers 😊👍
They do lovely cakes and soups in the tea room.
Great video Love coming to Shetland been five times hope to back next summer
This brought back so many good memories of living at Burrafirth. My late father Magnus Leask ( from Yell ) was senior principle at Muckle Flugga, family lived at Burrafirth shore station, made many trips out to the lighthouse during relief by the launch ( summer months only). Lived here during early 70's. Nothings really changed bar the radio masts and flagpole ..
I could not understand a single word she said !
My ancestors emigrated from Papa Stour to New Zealand in the mid 19th century… I loved seeing this video. :)
beautiul salloway
Great video
I did this trip during the day in May, it really was great, the island is spectacular just like the wildlife. The boat trip was a delight, so knowledgeable and entertaining. I love Shetland, really gets to your heart
Hee hee heee. My wife was watching too. When you pointed out how flat the area was she started in saying it wasn’t flat. I had to remind her. She’s never been to Kansas in America. ruclips.net/video/GWSjx4M0AuQ/видео.html
Dear god. This is how much of an idiot I am. If ever meet in person. Plus the jet lag…don’t expect much from me. When you said Papa Stour didn’t have much of a population today…I thought you meant they went out of town. I don’t know what the ferry schedule is. Maybe everyone leaves at the same time to go fishing. 🤣😂🤣😂. Ooohh goodness.
Wonderful walk! Thanks for bringing us along ; )
Amazing Video, thanks!
If you don't mind me asking, what is beach bagging? I'm visiting there in late August 2023.
It's visiting a beach. She bagged 8 beaches.
lek da subtitles - no dat keen on bookin a Fairy though😁
Lovely. I enjoyed this . Thank you
Had fabulous visit in 2017. We're back this summer & packing our beach cleaning gear. Shocking amount of ghost gear & other plastics. We're joining the Ghost Fishing UK Shetland Project 2023 on land in Lerwick to help sort the ghost gear they retrieve between the 6th and 11th August. Love Shetland & your videos.
❤Thanks! So windy, and chilly, and fabulous place!
Thank you. I enjoyed it very much.
Does the traditional three-room stone house exist anymore in the Islands?
Leave those birds alone! They don't like people to get near them!
The birds don’t mind, specialists monitor the colony regularly and guests are well managed by staff from The Mousa Boat to ensure that the birds are safe.
Don’t forget buttons the beach cat to
