Hi Simon, as always a super crazy idea, but as always it works. The proof that the hobby doesn't need to be a throwing of a lot of money at it to have fun and getting out there. I love watching your videos and will certainly build some of your antenna's and do POTA with them. 73 de ON3STG
Hey buddy, absolutely. It's awesome experimenting with crazy antenna ideas. I love it when they work out, and are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP to build. When I first started in the hobby, I spent way too much on antennas, so if my videos help to save everyone some money then fantastic! Happy new year buddy. Cheers
My home antenna is a fan dipole for 10m/12m/20m in the attic. As of 29th December I have worked exactly 100 countries this year, mixed mode, 10w. My challenge was to work 100 and I will likely go over that in the last three days of the year. My 20m section is actually a 10m dipole with loading coils on the end wound on kitchen roll cardboard tubes, with one foot of wire beyond the coil.
Late to the party watching this one but the holiday rush is real. I guess this is another addition to my ever growing list of projects. I'll probably opt for double strand speaker wire because that's what I have lol
@@noobonpc275 Wavelength is already in meters. No conversion is needed to keep it metric. Half wavelength of 80 meters is 40 meters. That’s easy to understand. Half wavelength of 80 meters is 131 feet 2.803 inches just makes it hard to visualize for everyone on the planet except yanks.
Thanks buddy. It’s a super fun build and the chopsticks stay in place beautifully and once you get it resonant, it totally rocks and no probs running 100w through the ehthernet wire wooohoooo 👍
Hey buddy, I LOVE the Cat5, and it is definitely my antenna of choice if I had to grab something for an emergency. I know it works, it can work in any configuration, and quick to deploy. FYI - I went to a yard sale on the weekend mate, and bought 50 feet of it for $1 hahaha. It's everywhere mate - should be able to find some and have some SOTA fun with it. Cheers mate!
Wooohooo buddy I sure did. This antenna works great and it’s the most satisfying feeling when things work out hahaha wooohoooo thanks for your comment mate and also for joining our discord 👍🍻
@@thehamjazz not a problem mate. I've just updated the app so working better now. I've had the app for 3 years still now sure what I am doing lol just like with the radio 😉 might jump on the mag loop soon and see what I can hear. I haven't powered the 817 up for awhile now. 🤙🏽
Hey buddy, thanks for your comment. That's what I love about activating POTA Parks... the noise floor is just soooo low. Love that! Thanks for watching mate. Cheers buddy.
After watching you building your antenna I thought of something. Have you ever thought of being a Hand Model? Those hands are a solid 7. #handmodel #smooth 😂👌👏
Whose feet do I use to measure with? :) 🇦🇺 Some say, my feet are larger than normal, how will this affect SWR?😂 The chop sticks are a brilliant idea! WOOHOO 😅🍻🇦🇺 73
Just goes to show you don't need to buy expensive antennas to put out a decent signal. Just some cheap. Ethernet cable and basic antenna theory. Happy New year David M0DUU
Hey buddy I only have 100w radios so I have no probs running 100w through them. If you do run 100w through them, make sure the antenna is resonant and no probs. I honestly think you could run 200w through them maybe more? Cheers mate
Man, I was really wanting to learn how to do this, but I’m a beginner and you went way too fast, and then further sped up your footage at the part I really needed to see… 😞😞😞
Unfortunately, you didn't show us anything about how your wires are connected to the feed line. Balun, capacitors....? The idea is quick and easy, but not a complete description. Therefor, not helpful.
Building antennas out of whatever you can get your hands on. That's the true spirit of ham radio.

Fantastic buddy! Happy building and Happy New Year! Let me know how the build goes. It works a treat. Cheers mate!
Love your videos Simon but oh man I really wish you would include metric measurements!
Convert it yourself 🎉
G’day buddy that’s a great suggestion - sorry above that… I’ll add the metric conversions to the description cheers mate

Holy Chopsticks! Good work!! 🔥🔥🔥 I love the fact that you're using Ethernet Cable. Good stuff!

Very cool, Simon! I wish I hadn't gotten rid of my rats nest of CAT5 I had for years.
