    Pete should have taken the extension the Mets offered him in 2023, which was reported as seven years for $158 million.

    • @3rdFloor
      @3rdFloor 9 дней назад +5

      Easy to sit here with hindsight glasses and say that. Had he hit 50 homeruns this year & had a OPS of 900 it would look different. Sometimes you do what Soto did and other times it doesn’t pan out. You think Soto wishes he signed with the Nationals for 300 million? lol

    • @johnstrawb3521
      @johnstrawb3521 9 дней назад +3

      Good for us that he did not. He's a 3/60m tier player. His decline is obvious and diComo is a dolt. 3.8, 2.8, 2.1 fWAR since 2022 is a player with a decent chance of never again putting up even one useful season. ---DiComo's answer? Make an absurdly counterproductive signing when the Mets ALREADY have a better 1Bman in Vientos.

    • @johnstrawb3521

      @@3rdFloor That's nonsensical. A 29 year old Pete was NOT that kind of player. He was never putting up a .900 OPS at that age, never hitting 50 HR again. Even his superb 2019 was goosed by the juiced ball. Players like Pete rarely, RARELY age well. It will take a fool of a GM, or Steve Cohen playing GM, to sign him now. Consider that even a GM as bad as Billy Eppler wouldn't go beyond $158m.

    Word has it that he Cardinals are actively shopping Jordan Montgomery. He has a really good career track record and has shown that he can pitch in big games. Supposedly, they tried to shop him to the Cubs for Bellinger and got turned down. Perhaps they can swap him for Jeff McNeil or Jose Buto. Castillo is not going to come cheap.

    I don't know why it's so obvious that the Mets should overpay Alonso when no other team is willing to overpay him. The Walker signing sets a good baseline for what Pete should get.

    Alonso was maybe 5th best hitter on Mets for most of the year….he is not worth more than $75 mil over 3 years…if Christian Walker is only worth $60 mil over 3 years….why is Alonso worth much more than that…

      Agree, Alonso's price is too much. If I was the Mets, I would have signed Walker for what he just signed for instead of Alonso. But maybe they'll recover by signing Bregman and playing Vientos at 1B, then possibly moving Vientos to DH if their prospect Clifford works out

  • @michaelmcchesney6645
    @michaelmcchesney6645 8 дней назад

    I am a Mets fan, but I don't know if I would pick the Mets in a Subway series. At least not yet. I don't think the Mets have the pitching. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Yankees have much better starting pitchers with Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Luis Gil, and Carlos Rodon. The Mets have Kodai Senga (returning from missing a season), David Peterson (who had a great half-season), and Clay Holmes trying to be a starter. If the Mets sign Sean Manea or David Stearns trades for a high-quality starter, I will be more optimistic about their chances. Actually, let me rephrase that. When the Mets do one of those things, I'll be optimistic because Stearns will do one, if not both. I am even hopeful the Mets could sign Roki Sasaki. The odds are against it, but I can come up with a pretty good pitch for him to sign with the Mets.
    First, I think Sasaki is willing to forego a Yamamoto-like contract because he expects to make a lot of money from endorsements. NYC is the biggest media market in the world. The only team that would give him a better chance to pitch in the postseason every single season than the Mets would be the Dodgers. However, if he signs with the Dodgers, he'd only be the third-biggest Japanese player on the team. If he signs with the Mets, he will get the chance to pitch to Ohtani during the regular season, and there would be a good chance every year that he would also pitch against him in the postseason. I am sure that not only does Sasaki want to pitch against Ohtani in big spots, but there is no matchup the Japanese media and public want to see more than Sasaki against Ohtani. Yes, the Yankees could provide the chance to pitch against him in the World Series, but the odds are against a replay of the 2024 Series in any given year, while the Mets and Dodgers are likely to make the postseason every year. Finally, if I had been writing the Mets pitch video, I would have been sure to include footage of the way NYC fell in love with Doc Gooden at the start of his career. Obviously, this would include the West 42nd Street mural morphing into a Sasaki mural. Or would that have been too much?
