Also, for anyone new that's going to do this, whenever you put the cpu back in, there should be no resistance whatsoever. It's called a ZIF chip, which stands for Zero Insertion Force. The chip should just drop in. If you try to force it in, a pin could break, rendering the cpu unusable (plus, most merchants will not refund/replace for a broken pin). I watched the video because I am interested in putting that cooler on my AMD Vishera six-core. The stock fan has lasted about a year and a half, and now I'm starting to get a tick in it. I don't like to wait for a thermal event. I'm at 2368 rpm at 30 C with a minimal load on the stock fan, so 2800 rpm with a larger fan should be more than enough for my needs. I have to give you credit, when I work on the cpu, the RAM always comes out first thing. ;) It looks like a mid-tower, how much clearance did you have from the side of the case to the top of the cooler? Do you think it provides good airflow within the case? It was a great video and sorry for the book.

I have a bracket that looks like an x with a screw in the middle and it just doesn't reach the back bracket so it can't be screwed in. Do you have a link or know what the clamp part is called so I can find it in order the part? I would so appreciate it.

Great job on the fan replacement. I've been working with computers since 1986 and all your steps were correct. I would make an addition regarding the "firmware", programming written to the chip set on a given device, for systems. With the onset of micro chips, the chip sets on the different devices hold a lot of their own device specific information and the "drivers" in today's Operating Systems rely more heavily on that firmware to work with the hardware. It's a good idea to check the manufacturers site to see if there are any updates for the system BIOS and such. Usually the only reason a hardware manufacturer publish those updates is to address issues that, believe it or not, may not show up for months or years. The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" doesn't apply any more. It's just like changing the oil in your car, regular maintenance is a GOOD thing. :) BTW, I work in server support for one of the major manufacturers currently and have to deal with firmware on a regular basis and people are usually surprised when updating it fixes an issue, regardless of the Operating System installed.:) Have fun and happy computing.
Great advise Old Pup, updating firmware and especially the BIOS in this case is a great way to ensure things are working correctly. In my case without the BIOS updated I may not have gotten the warning that the fan was not working properly and damage could have been done. Thanks for sharing your expertise here!
Depending on what heatsink you have. that's what your actually replacing. Like the one your putting in if the fan goes out. You can just remove and replace the fan . An won't have to replace the entire heatsink.

I replaced a CPU fan with a new identical model but on boot up the fan stays on at the highest speed. No settings were changed and when I reinstalled the older fan it ran at a normal speed as it did before. All I can think of is the new fan is defective in some way unless I'm missing something.

Sounds like you have a bad motherboard there. I can't say for sure without testing things and seeing it first hand but that is the way it is pointing. You could try a PCI-e Graphics card if it is just the video issue but if the whole thing stops working after a few days it could be the board. Also, make sure it is not overheating, clear/clean all fans especially the CPU fan with canned air.
