  • Cannibal Holocaust is a 1980 Italian found footage cannibal horror film directed by Ruggero Deodato and written by Gianfranco Clerici. It stars Robert Kerman as Harold Monroe, an anthropologist from New York University who leads a rescue team into the Amazon rainforest to locate a crew of filmmakers. Played by Carl Gabriel Yorke, Francesca Ciardi, Perry Pirkanen, and Luca Barbareschi, the crew had gone missing while filming a documentary on local cannibal tribes. When the rescue team is only able to recover the crew's lost cans of film, an American television station wishes to broadcast the footage as a sensationalized television special. Upon viewing the reels, Monroe is appalled by the team's actions and objects to the station's intent to air the documentary.

    Never thought I'd see a reaction to this. The director was taken to court because people believed the movie was real, and he had to bring the actors in to prove they were in fact alive and it was just a fictitious film. The animal brutalities were real though, and the director later stated that he regretted doing that.

    The animal killing can't be justified. Because the animals are tortured first. The pig is kicked. The little coatimundi is stabbed to death, and the turtle gets a slow death. It's not just animals being killed for slaughter. It's animal abuse.

    • @Shalanaya
      @Shalanaya 3 месяца назад +2

      No they were not tortured, this is how indigenous tribes used to kill animals for food, just because they dont kill them based on YOUR own moral standards does not mean it is animal abuse, this film has been criticizing this kind of moral colonization that you have ironically demonctrated here yourself with regards to how other people shuld treat others, including obviously indigenous tirbes. It is this authoritarianism that has been part of the story where people come and abuse others because it is their norm, so they are free to inflict it on others.

    Fun fact: 1983's top viewed films in Japan were.......E.T. and.......Cannibal Holocaust! The Japanese loved this movie! Saw this on laserdisc for the first time in 98. Have only been able to find 2 friends since then that would agree to watch it throughout all these years. I respect and cherish it for its balls, brutality and originality. It is a journey through the senses. It takes you away from your reality and forces you to go on a journey. I love a movie that gets this deep and different. But I do have to look away during the turtle scene. If any of you get the chance listen to Carl Yorke's interview on the filming of this. Very very intense interview. I've been a horror and gore junkie since the early 80's. My favorites are as follows: The Guinea Pig series, The Man Behind The Sun, Cannibal Ferox, Caligula - The Untold Story(graphic not horror) and Man From Deep River(started the whole Cannibal fascination to follow). Thanks for covering this masterpiece(IMO).

  • @leopardprints
    @leopardprints Год назад +7

    To your point at 11:39 about naked, underage children. You're actually the first person to raise the issue of this. It wasn't a factor in why it was banned, btw. But it's an interesting point. Because using stock footage of tribes that are nude is one thing. But having child extras naked is another thing. Interesting point.
    The girl who played the girl who was raped by the main character towards the end of the movie was only 14. She had grown men, exposed, on top of her simulating a rape, while she was naked.
    In a 'making of' documentary, the director said that she was a girl from a local village, she'd never seen a camera or car before. And she didn't understand what wears going on in the scene. So her terrified reaction was likely real.
    Again, she was 14. Naked, and simulating a violent gang rape.
    That is child abuse. It may not be strictly sexual abuse or CP. But it's child abuse, because she's too young to consent or understand what was going on.
    She was also the girl who impaled on the stick, naked. Which is in all the posters and t shirts etc and probably the movie's most famous image. She is a 14.
    The native extras were put in danger during the hut fire scene and treated badly by the director. And the female lead was forced into exposing her breasts. And of course, the animal abuse.
    Any 'message' that the film was trying to convey is negated by the fact the director exploited and abused the native crew. It's pure hypocrisy.

    The film's soundtrack was composed entirely by Italian composer Riz Ortolani, whom Deodato specifically requested because of Ortolani's work in Mondo Cane. Deodato was particularly fond of the film's main theme, "Ti guarderò nel cuore", which was given lyrics and became a worldwide pop hit under the title "More". The music of Cannibal Holocaust is a variety of styles, from a gentle melody in the "Main Theme", to a sad and flowing score in "Crucified Woman", and faster and more upbeat tracks in "Cameraman's Recreation", "Relaxing in the Savannah", and "Drinking Coco", to the sinister-sounding "Massacre of the Troupe". The instrumentation is equally mixed, ranging from full orchestras to electronics and synthesizers

    Cannibal Holocaust achieved notoriety as its graphic violence aroused a great deal of controversy. After its premiere in Italy, it was ordered to be seized by a local magistrate, and Deodato was arrested on obscenity charges. He was later charged with multiple counts of murder due to rumors that claimed several actors were killed on camera. Although Deodato was cleared of these charges,

I actually like that beautiful main theme from Riz Ortolani! It's on my RUclips playlist! LOL! Whenever I play this music from my phone, no one of course has no idea of its association with this film! The director Ruggero Deodato was actually brought to court because people thought he actually killed real people on film. The actors who played the victims had to show themselves in court to prove they were not killed. But unfortunately those animals were killed for real. Yes, Eli Roth chose the title The Green Inferno for his cannibal film from this film. There is another Italian cannibal film Cannibal Ferox but I'm not planning on seeing that one ever. There is a scene where they hang a woman with metal hooks through her breasts. I know it's practical effects but it's still too much for me. I really appreciate your takeaway- it breaks the fourth wall in a way that was very nicely executed (the found film reels, vs the actual cinematic portions). it was unethically filmed- and not just the animal cruelty. the racist depictions were also unfortunately common for this genre at the time. the director mistreated the cast. but, there is a core message here. as CH progresses, and the film reels are shown bit by bit (with the professor taking us through that journey), you really fucking hate these "documentarians". they are scumbags. they staged a "war", they murdered their animals, they committed horrific abuses, and loved every second of it. and you want them to die. The tribe wasn't hostile towards them until they were pushed to this limit. and as unfortunate as the circumstances were for the actual filmmaking process of CH, the message is clear. this is what separates this film from Roth's.

I recall seeing this one, way back in my teen days and stumbling across a full copy of it streaming online for free. And damn, it was a rough sit. I do recall feeling confused and uncertain of my thoughts on the film at the time. Now, I see the importance of it. The thin line that filmmakers can cross from good to bad taste overall. That iconic stake death was such a simple effect (basically modified bicycle seat and a log made to fit in the native woman's mouth. That's it, and yet director got charged for murder). That's what I appreciate from the film, it's grounded and real creative sensibilities that feel believable and work for what he was conveying. That doesn't mean I endorse or like the actual animal deaths in this film at all, that still is haunting to think about to this day.

    Found footage: the earliest film that could arguably be called "found footage" is a 1962 film called The Connection. It was considered an arthouse film and was rarely seen. Another film called Punishment Park was also filmed in a handheld style and is often classified as a pseudodocumentary. Cannibal Holocaust is usually pointed to as the first found footage film because, like The Blair Witch Project, it was the first to claim that the handheld footage was actually "found" and brought back for screening (Punishment Park and The Connection were openly advertised as fiction), which warps reality around the narrative experience.

    Its curiosity if tribes and such civilisation, but there was alot of shock value films like this. In modern times how many sick minded are there now who do things on media!
    It's not a film to be enjoyed it's to be understood that certain people have to survive this way, but I disagree with the pain inflicted on poor animals. But yes dont mess with tribes . The music is creepy as hell . Imagine back in the day films like this were in theatres.
    A real eye opener and I commend you for your bravery !! I wanna watch this too .

    There is more rape in the film than actual scenes of cannibalism. Aside from one scene in the beginning I don't remember actually cannibals eating people in this film.

    Thank you Italy for the first found footage film. This is kinda boring till the cannibal revenge at the end. I saw a reissue of this in 1986 with my Dad in the theater when I was 16. It is one of many films that he hated.

    Saw this right here on RUclips a few years ago, someone uploaded it. LOL I was a little disturbed at first because the rumors the killings were real, but after reading more about it felt less traumatized.
    Try the Faces of Death series. Use to watch those when I was in junior high. There was a film can't remember the title around the same time as "Holocaust" (I think) dealt with female Asian prisoners being tortured by military (?). The part I remember of it was they made one dip her hands in liquid nitrogen then hit them shattering 'em as she watched screaming.
    Great reaction, I know how you felt 😆.

    Cannibal Holocaust is a strange one. I think to appreciate it on any level you have to at the very least have an awareness of Italian cinema of the 60's/70's & 80's and also the Mondo filmmaking scene which was so prevalent during this era. It's a film I have mixed feelings on, Cannibal Apocalypse is actually my favourite Italian Cannibal film and I'd argue that Cannibel Ferox aka Make Them Die Slowly (one of the best alternate titles for a Horror flick) is a more explicit, outright disgusting film. I saw Ferox when i was 9, thanks to my Brother lmao and immediately puked up my dinner. You can't deny however that Cannibal Holocaust has one of the greatest theme tunes of all time, it's beautiful (thanks to the late, great Riz Ortolani - Tarantino pinched some of his music for Django Unchained). EDIT I'd recommend you watch The Untold Story (1992) or Ebola Syndrome (1996) - two pretty controversial movies, personally I found them hilarious but they're not to everyone's taste.

    I got it on blu ray and all I can say is wow a very strong and daring film masterpiece for it's time. Film has a great deep message and the professor is amazing to win the trust back of the tribe people and how the filmmakers behaved was awful. The white civilised people exploited the natives for their gain and glamour, mistreated them.
    Dont mess with tribes and other territories. It was a great strong film "not for the faint hearted "

    First of all, those animals were not tortured, this is how indigenous tribes used to kill animals for food, and they were killed for food while pointing a camera, just because they dont kill them based on YOUR own moral standards does not mean it is animal abuse, this film has been criticizing this kind of moral colonization that so many people have ironically demonstrated with regards to how other people should treat others, including obviously indigenous tribes. This is how ahead of time this film was. It is showing thematically exactly what the audience has been doing with regards to the treatment of animals and humans during the making of this film, It is this authoritarianism that has been part of the story where people come and abuse others because it is their norm, so they feel justified to inflict it on others, because somehow in their midns it is objectivelly wrong. By the way, the way they killed the turtle has been confirmed that this is how some tribes used to kill animals. What an irony, isn't it, when you really really think about it how the title itself Cannibal Holocaust is symbolical in the way it is showing how modern societies are cannibalizing themselves through their disconnection from pain and death through their repression, which eventually manifests as violent colonization of others, other cultures, other moralities, etc. How tragic that so many people could not see through the message of this film to get it. The reason Deodato was judged like this, because he exists within the moral system, but it is this moral system that needs to be questioned, because it is imposing itself on others. It is at the core of monarchical authortiarian colonization and violence.

    • @Shalanaya

      Humans by nature are tribal, and the colonization is enforcing a homogeny, repression and dissolution of diversity.

    • @sethclyde1137
      @sethclyde1137 7 месяцев назад

      The snake is a baby red tail boa. Probably used because bright colors like red are read as venom/poison in the animal kingdom and being indigenous to the area (which is probably the smartest choice in species vs something like a milksnake- something rare with snakes in film).
      If I were to guess the director was going for a fir de lance (may have misspelled it) which is a similar colored snake- also indigenous- that amputation would be logical in the time era/situation the crew was facing.
      Anyways, with all of the unethical shit done to the cast, let’s be glad the director chose to use a constrictor vs an actual venomous snake for the scene!

    I do believe I'm WAY older than you - I was in high school & college in the '80s - but only recently have I watched it. I'm a social liberal & very against censorship. Nor do I tell people to NOT see movies. This is the 1 I DO tell people they shouldn't watch it.
    There's too much genuinely wrong w/me to recommend it - the animal deaths, Deodato's unethical treatment of the local extras & the actual STARS! It's exploitative in ALL the wrong ways.
    I'm thankful that Deodato didn't go to jail for murder, but he should NOT be thought of as an essential filmmaker. He doesn't deserve the "honor" of a visionary auteur.

    This movie have a great mensege and a great sountrack, but for me it's a film than it's so care for be morbid and nasty, than all try of be a social commentary it's forget for the innesesary shock valeu. Also not it's so bloody like all world say, it're more raw, ofense and racist than gore in my opinion; Hostel or The green inferno in my opinion it're more explicit and bloody. Also have a cinematograpy and photograpy very poor, not just the part of found fotage. The animal brutality it's very innesesary. And the first part in this movie it's a bit boring.
    My point it's a 4 out 10. Very meh in my opinion.

If you can make it through the last 10 minutes, you've done well...Oldboy from 2003. It is Korean I believe. The American version is not good....Ichi the Killer (very violent)...August Underground and its sequels (the whole movie is just killing, killing, killing)...these I've listed are a good start...there are many more.
