A question I ask is “do I need support?”
9 times out of 10, if there are too many things that aren’t getting done, it’s because I need support. As an adult woman with ADHD, sometimes that support looks like me asking my husband to sit with me to ensure i get the things done that I need (something called a “body double” in adhd land), and sometimes I just need him to take things off my plate - and if I ask, I know he will.
And thank you - once again this was the video I needed to see ❤❤❤

I'm so guilty of making long to-do lists, but not telling myself WHEN I was going to do all the things. Needless to say the list mostly got longer and too many things went undone. But I strongly prefer hourly planners, so I always have one on hand. Then yesterday 'by accident' I put a block in my planner to do something I have been putting off for days. I didn't start exactly on time, but I did it in that window and it felt like magic. And then this video popped up! Wow! Super helpful. I watched it twice and took some notes. Thank you!

I’m a List maker! It was a relief once I realized it. I purchased all the planner things, and I quickly became overwhelmed. I’d buy sticker books just because they were pretty. Now I use 3x5 index cards and a few icon stickers, and I’m more productive. I still maintain a budget planner to keep track of finances, and use pretty stickers when I’m in the mood.

ohhhh yes! When you said "make sure you list all the things you need to do the task" (or something like that), that really resonated with me as an area I need to work on.

Thank you for these 5 questions. When you mentioned cleaning out a closet, I realized that's not a task, it's a project with multiple steps. So, I will be dividing such projects into "steps" first. Then, make an appointment for say 1 hour. If I still have time, I can go on to the next step. I have followed the Slob Sisters 3x5 card system for 30 years and each routine task has a time estimate and the list of items needed to do the job. So, that's what I need to do for each appointment in my planner.

Omgoodness! This is definitely what I have been doing...making a bunch of to do lists but not really planning. Your videos have been so on point!!!! Love these questions and I plan to work on adding an hourly schedule to my planner for next week. It seems like this is time consuming, but creates more intentionality with time. Again, thank you!!!

Alaina, once again you hit the nail on the head for me! I am a list maker, things to do, always have been. If it makes on my list it gets done. However, if it should have been on my list and did not make to the list, it does not get done. It could be forgotten altogether. Until I realized it was forgotten then stress sets in.
I will begin to intentionally make time the night before to plan the next day. Baby steps!😄
Thank you so much Alaina, I will be a purposeful planner yet!❤️

I plan out my day, and if I have an appointment everything is written in my planner. People think that I don't really need to write everything down. I am one of those people who hates to be late for anything etc. I have always been this way, and I am not changing for anyone. This has worked for me as long as I have been using a planner. During my school days, I kept a notebook so I knew when I had tests and assignments due. But you gave some great tips that people can use in their lives.

I love this. Scheduling out your day and recognizing not to just make a huge to do list is a huge game changer with my planner. I’ll add with bigger projects I will set time goals through out the day instead of task completion. So instead of breaking a task down like clean the closet into a bunch of mini steps, I’ll put “work on closet for 30 minutes” in the schedule. It’s been helpful for projects to count out the work sessions I have and get an accurate representation of how long tasks actually take.

The thing about planning is that it’s SO personal. How one person uses their planner might be completely different than someone else, hence why so many different types of planners exists. I had a Hobonichi Weeks, so it’s compact and straight to the point. Not a lot of room to write specific things, but after years and years of trying big desk planners, ring planners, etc, this is the planner that works best for me. I use it as a weekly overview, not a daily planner, because I’m extremely ADHD and will lose focus of planning entirely if I try and be too detailed. I use my iphone calendar for anything that’s timed - like meetings, phone calls, and even chores that I know I gotta do. But that being said, I loved this video and the info you’re putting out there! It’s refreshing to also hear someone talk about it because so many of us do just make lists and we don’t end up utilizing our planners to their potential. But I do encourage everyone to be ok to find your own flow.

I think I can say yes to most of the questions; for sure the last three. I don’t put too much detail into the task as keywords suffices for reminding me of what have to do. I put due dates on some items, but not all. I found this video a good reminder of how to focus with respect to your planning. Thank you!

It depends on the issue. I created this planner because I struggled with processing too many pieces of information at once and I needed a way to separate my thoughts and focus. It works for anyone who is overstimulated with a lot of intrusive thoughts. It may not work for everyone though.
