    When you use one by four strapping over the shingles nailed directly into each rafter, it creates a completely new deck and every screw is installed into a fresh piece of new wood. That is the only way to go. If you screw metal directly through shingles, you have no idea what you’re screwing into underneath the shingles. Strapping eliminates that issue

    If no leaks..
    1/2 lap felt .

    I have several 30+ year metal roofs with no leaks and no problems , they are exposed fastener roofs.

    First, I would offer my opinion that it is always better to strip a roof before any reroof, for all the reasons stated, but especially for the ability to do a proper inspection. However I personally feel that the issues raised are generally overstated. I have never hesitated to do standing seam over one layer of resonably flat asphault shingles. You are only adding perhaps 1/3 the weight of a asphault roof so load is not an issue in most cases, and will in most cases be less if you are in snow country because the load will be released when the snow slides.I don't quite agree with the emphasis you have placed on moisture issues. The small amounts of moisture that may accumulate under a metal roof(residential anyway) will easily dissipate quickly under normal conditions. The problems arise when exccess moisture is being created in the living space and not being dealt with properly.Common issues in the northeast where I live? Wet cellars is a very common one, propably the worst in residential. Drying firewood in the house.Hot tubs.Large families(lots of showers, baths, etc.).And of course a leaking roof , due to improper installation or age. All these things get a lot worse in the winter when that excess water can become frost and accumulate to pretty significant quantities.Often you can't get rid of that kind of moisture with a vented ridge cap or gable end vents.My point is if you eliminate the cause of the excess moisture that solves the issue more easily that trying to mitigate it .In other words, fix youe cellar, vent baths propery, etc. .
    I always use a slipsheet no matter what I go over. But again I think you might be overstating the issue of laying the metal panels directly over shingles. The given reason is the expasion and contracton causes abrasion to the contact service. But really, you make it not like there's theres someone under there with a belt sander! I have removed many metal roofs that were installed directly over asphault and never have encountered evidence of this issue. What is the coefficient of expansion on a 25 foot panel, maybe 1/16 of an inch spread over 25 feet. It would take a thousand years to wear through.But I personally love the new synthetic barriers; they're cheap and I always use them.
    Having said all this I do not really disagree with any that you have said.Yours is the safest plan of action.I recently did a reroof that had rolled roofing/wood shakes/asphault(yes, asphaut over wood shakes)/asphault/ and the customer actually wanted to go over all that with standing seam to save what I knew was going to to an expensive strip.I simply refused and they took my advice, but that sure shows how extreme things can get sometimes. But often you can look at a job , say this is not going to be an issue in this particular situation and you can save the customer some money. Anyway , thanks for the informative video.

    • @JJ-pf7qo
      @JJ-pf7qo 2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing wow. So you would say it's OK with metal over shingle given that it's fairly even and free of bulging spots? Also you mentioned about synthetic barrier which brand? And I saw lot of people do 1x4 wood trip framing over existing shingles and attach metal roof on that wood grid they created. Is that not recommended?

    • @jeffreyallen3777
      @jeffreyallen3777 2 года назад +1

      @@JJ-pf7qo It's hard to give you aspecific answer, but I install double lock standing seam which is in a category of it's own . If you are thinking snap-lock or screw-down (exposed screw fastener) then strapping the roof may be a requirement for going over old shingles. It would be a requirement for a screw down roof as the screws will leak if they don't go into a hard surface. Snap-lock may be a case where the manufacture may also require purlins installed over shingles to honor warranty for their own reasons. If you have substrate issues(water damage,etc.) you really should strip it. So I never meant to say go over every shingled roof. just that there is no reason in my opinion not to go over them just because they are there. If I go over them with my standing seam thay have to be in pretty good shape. With strapping you've got a lot more flexability . As far as membrane every lumber yard or metal supplier has a selection and basically all are sutible these days for metal underlayment. I use Rhino roof a lot, and also the more expensive Roof top guard. Also keep in mind that if you go over shingles you can't install a water and ice shield barrier menbrane if your in ice dam country like I am. With double locked standing seam I seal the seams top to bottom with caulk but this would not be possible with screw down or most snap locks as far as I know.

    Don't listen to them. They are high. Put down some felt paper right over your shingles. Trim all the overhang off the shingles.( I popped a chalk line and cut the overhang with a skill saw on shallow setting.) Let metal roof overhang about 2 inches. Go to town installing your metal roof. Oh yeah, be sure to use 2 inch screws. And do a watertight job with the flashing. The metal roof plus the shingles underneath add some additional insulation value to your house. Mine is 10 years with no leaks. Did it myself. FYI . I had bad leaks before I installed the metal roof.
    You can do it with strips of wood but the name of this video, Is can it be done? Yes, it can be done.

      You basically put a bandaid over it and didn’t resolve the issue. If there was a leak then there is wood damage that wasn’t fixed and now when you go to replace the metal roof it will be 2-3x as expensive since there will be 2 layers to remove and even more wood to replace now. But hey, who wants to think long term just slap a barn roof over it. Because that’s what metal roofs are for- barns.

And NO you don't need any underlayment because you still have your old roof that will be doing the exact same thing and more. (LOL) Condensation? Nope again; the wood strips allows air to flow under the metal panels. Hot air rises! The right way to do it is the same as how solar panels are applied, using a few inches of air space. This is what the advantage is. So just have large metal panels vs the small solar panels, and this basically shades your roof. Its not rocket science, just practical fact of sun vs shade and reflectivity vs conducting and radiating heat. Just make sure you make the air gap large enough to make clearing leaf build up easy. What you will also consider doing is deadening the metal from underneith. This will help make it quiet when it rains and with wind. This gives me an idea!!!

Next was tar paper laid vertical with half overlap (uses more paper but makes handling the panels with no possible damage to paper way easier) I installed this 6/12 pitch roof singlehanded! I bought a old farm house with standing seem over shingle over wood shingle. House caught on fire. Fire department showed up and had to strip most of the steel off before attacking the fire. Normally they would simple knock a hole in the roof to allow the flames to go up instead of climb the roof inside. But because the medal was over all that it just made it hard to attack. Once the medal was off and the roof was opened up then they could drop water in from the top down. But by that time the damage was done. In that region if it was a normal standing seem it would be medal over wood slats. Again if it had a house fire it would be easier to punch holes and vent the fire because there wouldn't have been near as much fuel sitting directly under the metal.

      This would be the way it should be done, but sometimes the cost of repairing what existing damage is revealed after removing the shingles, may lead to replacing a full roof. I know it's best to do it right, but, for me who totaly is living on Survivor Benefits, I'm shortcutting , by placing tin roof over all of it. Please don't take my advice. As later, I'm sure it have to be do e right. Like, repairing first. I'm in a great need of a roof repair, but, with my income, I would never be able to afford it. A tin roof, is in my wish list.

    Better to roof over shingles. When I attach 1x4 I screw into rafter. I measure for location. Test with screw first I hit rafter 8/10 times. When I miss then reset till hit. Once that is done then attach roof to 1x4’s. The shingles add thermal mass and one more layer of water protection. Roofers that strip roof is looking to make more money. If roof is wood shingle I would then strip to allow for more even application.

      @Sam Radowick If you don't want tpo strip the roof or any contractor that sells a job without removing the shingles are just flat money grubbing greedy contractors that have nothing but thieir own pocketbook in mind and not the quality or lifetime of the roof
      They use excuse of why charge the customer more and pretend to act like its the customers pocket book they are protecting but in the long run that saved money goes into the contractors pocket .
      Ive sold hundreds of roofs metal shingle TPO hot mop torch and every kind of metal u-panel r-panel 5 vee standing seam with clips without clips 3 tab 20 yr 3 tab 25 tr architectual 30 yr 50 yr and lifetime and out of all those applications not 1 manufacturer will stand behind not 1 of their roofs installed over another roof . So find a legitimate contractor that will do the job right and compare apples to apples . sure you may get a cheaper metal roof price but are they using 24 guage flashing or 26 are they using lifetime screws or the cheap ones that back out after 10 15 yrs . are they installing your new roof over existing shingles etc. its the little things that matter . And finally check the codes where you live and check with your insurance.. Would hate to have to remove that roof and reinstall it because of a guy who claims to have been doing it his way for 20 yrs and never had a problem !! I can say this doing it the correct way and Ive never had a recall and offered 10 yr warranty to boot thats over and above local 3 yr warranty from competition and 5 yr on liable issues from court on workmanship ..

      @Sam Radowick Nothing political here im just saying the cost of removing the old roof however minimal it could be compared to the overal cost of the job should not dictate the proper way to put a roof on . However if leaving the shingles on is the way a person wants to do it when putting the metal roof on i think that 1x4 latting or nailers should be fastened to rafters with a ring shank nail every 24 inches to attach the panels to . Thats my opinion that worked in my grsat state of Texas thanks for your input as well . But to tell the truth you said alot but never said anything . What i learned from you is that the 7th nail must be a waste which the 5 and 6 could be too if nailing to a good deck not plywood . And seriously ive never heard so much crying abour removing a roof on a roof job . Isnt that the whole reason your there because the roof is leaking or has failed . But by god removing it makes no sense . I call BS . The only roof i would think to leave would be a total retrofit over say a spray foam mess .. my opinion

      @Sam Radowick lol. Overkill thats a term that is debatable . My grandfather had a saying and yes he was a wiseman . Never seems to be enough money or time to do the job right the first time . But isnt it funny how there is always enough time and money to go back and do it over .. overkill is not using upgraded screws instead of cheap two piece screws that back out after 15 years and leak . Overkill is not using 24 guage flashing on all metal roofs so that you dont have to warehouse 24 and 26 and hope the right ones get put on your 24 gu standing seam so a better way is to purchase all flats or coils 24 guage and you insure quality on all roofs and uts a extra selling point for a screw down 26 guage job bonus 24 on the flashing .. over kill is a term used by people that tend to shave corners instead of operating smart . Large ir small when you have been a roof project for 14 months and you go to get your final check and nothing is on your punch out list to collect that check u did something right and i promise my name will stay in good standing .

    No petroleum left in shingles. The shingles of 60 years ago are nothing compared to the recycled cereal box shangles that you can purchase today. Sun dries them up and they chip away when the plastic tar dries from the seal line. They end up in the neighbors yard after a windstorm. Plus many other cardboard box shangle issues. Metal roof here it is wood deck on residential roof with appropriate underlayment then metal roof. No wood perlin unless it's a pole barn. Never EVER should you apply steel over 20 grit sand paper aka shingles. It will Rust from inside out due to thermal expansion. Back and forth movement over time. Apply metal roofing to a solid wood substrate any time you can in residential projects. I recommend a True standing seam metal roof with 24gauge Akzo Nobel,PPG, Or Kynar hylar paint systems. 40 year warranty on some of these paint systems.

    You would think in 2021 instead of using the wood for decking that gets weak/starts deteriorating after 20 years they could come up with a lifetime osb type sheet that is reasonable in price. Think it is more a money maker, so you have to spend. A better waterproof synthetic roof decking would be much better. I been in same house for 21 years and about 15 years in, my decking was going bad in different spots, took around 15 sheets. Now 6 years later I can see a couple spots looking wavey. I want to do a metal roof on new house I am buying in a couple weeks(will be needing roof within 2-3 years), cost is complicated, so hopefully I can afford it.

  • @benth162
    @benth162 4 года назад +1

    Yes you can, but it is not advisable on a wood shingle or shake roof considering the cost of the metal and how you want it to look when you're done. If you do then you must lay down 2x4 skip sheeting that would be nailed to the rafters with 16P ring-shank nails for a more sturdy sheeting. If you use 1x4 skip sheeting your steel may look warped, and or puckered because wood shingles or shakes do not lay flat. If your question is about laying it over Comp shingles, then all you would have to do is lay down 1x4 skip sheeting. The comp shingles should be sufficient to act as a moisture barrier.
