    The blanket ban on leather shoes that some vegan have really grinds my gears. My husband has to wear safety boots to work. If he buys non leather they usually last 6 months and he often comes home with sore feet. His leather ones he currently has are coming up to 4 years old, are still in good condition and even after a 13 hour day his feet are not sore. Non leather shoes are primarily made from plastic (especially work boots). I’m sure the 8 pairs of plastic boots he would of gone through in the past 4 years would of cost more animal life if you trace the plastic back to its origins as oil, not too mention the environmental impact. And we’d probably of spent several times the amount in the long run too. One $160 pair every 4 years vs $50 every 6 months?

    • @dippyhippy7166

      Good point. My partner works in warehouses and drives fork lifts, health and safety dictates he wears leather steel toe caps approved by the company. So he wouldn't be able to bring in his own pair. Does having that unfortunate part of working so we can live mean he or your husband are not vegan? No, it's being stuck between a rock and a hard place where finance and resources leave us with unfortunate options.

      @dont_harsh_my_mellow 4 года назад +46

      Dippy Hippy yeah. And if they’re so bothered they should invest in finding an alternative option that doesn’t involve using leather but with the durability of leather (or better). “Don’t tell people never to do something unless you have an alternative that works.” That quote sits with me a lot when I offer criticism too. Don’t tell people never to wear leather if you can’t offer solutions to situations where wearing leather can be necessary.

    • @HNGuthrie
      @HNGuthrie 4 года назад +36

      Yes! Sometimes the alternatives are worse in the long run than the leather is. I don't require specialized work boots, so when my shoes wear out, I try to buy used leather ones. That way, I'm not directly funding leather production, but those shoes are also not going to turn into tiny bits of plastic in my local waterways when they inevitably wear out. Perfectionist standards only work in a world that is also perfect.

Its about the animals and their abuse that we are demanding to stop. People call us “extreme” and “superior” and when it is ironic that our behavior towards other beings and this planet is extreme and the fact people put other animals on the back burner and say oh if you talk ab veganism youre extreme. Intersectionality can very well be a practical approach. I think taking an intersectional approach to veganism is essential to be EFFECTIVE, not just to be 'sensitive' or 'not an asshole'. Example: you need different approaches to promote veganism to young, white, rich college students compared to parents of color living below the poverty line in a food desert. Different societal oppressions create different realities and this applies especially to the case of veganism. There is no one-size-fits-all and that is why it is important to have an intersectional approach. *Understanding how class, racism, gender, ableism etc. relate to health, lifestyle, food choices, consumer behavior, etc. is ESSENTIAL for effective vegan activism.*

I think examining animal agriculture under capitalism can demonstrate that it's not just people merely consuming animal products that's the issue. I took a job that required leather shoes, which at the time, I had no problem with, but the vegans who worked there had to purchase leather shoes, or choose another place to work, or be in violation of the safety policy.

      The production factor isn't the issue. It's the fact that vegan shoes are obviously inferior in terms of longevity and the ability to protect the foot. A boot that doesn't provide protection in a construction site or other work condition isn't useful.
      Would you rather have a leather boot that prevents your foot from getting broken or a vegan boot that causes all your foot bones to crushed and require emergency surgery or even cause you to lose your foot.

      Why is it ok for kids to choose to sponsor slavery, mutilation and murder of non-human animals but kids killing dogs and cats after school is not? It shouldn't even be a choice to not be vegan.
      No matter what the child thinks there's place and time for everything and at a specific age(like 10) you can simply tell them the truth, that people all over the world have normalized slavery and murder of non-human animals and that you're against it and he/she should be to because it's the right thing to do. Children are not dumb, and if you have properly prepared yourself for raising one you'll deal with it. Which I hope you have, cause if not, how did you expect them to not grow up to be a burglar, terrorist or rapist? Just by letting them see that other people aren't and that it's against the law? That's not exactly how the world works.
      Not trying to come off as aggressive, trust me, so don't be offended or anything, those are legitimate questions without any sarcasm intended.

I question whether such a person is properly sane & credentialed to advise clients. Also, my family owns an organic blueberry farm & some of the farm workers have a coop area where they live on the farmland and hand-raise a small number of goats, milk cows and chickens. The animals live with their offspring free in a meadow with optional shelter in a barn to escape bad weather. They fertilize the land & runoff provides nutrients across the farm (we rotate their grazing position). They play with the human kids & have what any rational person can see is an ideal existence. They're certainly not slaves or mistreated, but nor are they persons! They wouldn't have lived at all if not for their symbiotic relationship with the human families & farm. Should their eggs be thrown away or eaten by the kids?

      1. As stated, the cows are used for more than just milk. On a farm with crop rotation, they make awesome lawnmowers, weeders and fertilizers. Plus they're just darn lovely to have around. So Male and mumma cows who do not produce milk can still live happily on a farm for the rest of their natural days.
      2. Same applies for Male chickens who also make awesome alarm clocks :)
      3. An average milk cow can produce enough milk to sustain a calf and produce adequate milk for a small family without having to seperate the mummy and bub.

They can avoid that embarrassment and look like they "know stuff." It's terrible for society as a whole imo though; discussion and education is what we need.

    Good video! Hope you read the comment that The Spaghettification made which was SPOT ON! They wrote 'Understanding how class, racism, gender, ableism etc. relate to health, lifestyle, food choices, consumer behavior, etc. is ESSENTIAL for effective vegan activism'.
    Am an evolutionist,and long time environmentalist, plant based (since '63) , and believe in 2020 humans are indeed evolving due to being better educated, about the environmental impact, to all of society, of the danger of animal consumption.
    What concerns me is so many RUclips vegans (mostly millennial's) don't seem to give any thought to helping the poor, the disfranchised. Nor do they seem to speak of the importance of living in a smaller home, being more minimalist, less consumerist, reducing their carbon foot print by traveling;/driving less, avoiding processed/prepackaged foods whose containers are not recyclable. And thinking beyond their own bubble.
    Or helping at local food banks be healthy fruit, vegetables,nuts and grains oriented so healthy whole foods are accessible to those in most need. Those of of us who are vegan and volunteer at area food banks are all over the age of fifty.
    Am semi retired but have worked with WHO (World Health Organization), Médecins Sans Frontières, (Doctors Without Borders), the Peace Corps and volunteer with Habitat For Humanity and area food banks. Being vegan/plant based and volunteering with local/state/regional groups that have NOTHING to do with being vegan/plant based is one of the BEST ways to show how positive the vegan/plant based lifestyle can be. Instead of being seen as cliquish, odd, or a fad.

      @animefangrl0902 4 года назад +3

      @moths from neptune True, many people diet in order to lose weight. I won't deny that, however how has UV slandered Freelee?
      Pointing out the flaws in Freelee's own arguments around raw till 4, vegan activism and how out of touch she has become isn't slander.
      Freelee has slandered vegans such as Jenna Marbles and UV heaps of times and yet you don't think it's slander, especially towards Jenna.
      An example of how Freelee is out of touch is when responding to Jenna marbles, she talked about Jenna adopting a farm animal in order to keep making an ethical connection, it’s unrealistic to do so and irresponsible behaviour as many who live urban environments may not have the resources to look after them. Sure adopting chickens or ducks may be an option but definitely not pigs.
      Also slandering Jenna herself by saying she is slipping from a vegan diet, where there is no evidence of that occurring.
      The gram crackers and ramen noodles incident are not conclusive of Jenna being less vegan at all and most likely an accidental purchase. Jenna has owned up to the fact that she made a mistake, but isn't actively promoting or implying that people should buy these products.
      Plus, Jenna's main focus on her channel isn't veganism and should never be forced to do so. If your counter argument is going to be that Jenna supports Freelee, it may not be relevant especially it seems that Jenna no longer support Freelee or condones her behavior.
      Another example is Freelee slandering UV by calling her a meat and dairy shill with no evidence to prove that. Don't you think that is slander? There's no proof anywhere that UV secretly eats meat, unlike Rawvana who got caught eating fish when she claimed to be vegan for a long time.
      There's no evidence of either UV or Jenna Marbles becoming less vegan and Freelee is not the face of veganism, nor should she believe that she can dictate who is or isn't vegan. Vegan gatekeeping is harmful
      Freelee makes assumptions of others and dismisses out of hand any facts to the contrary. Anyone who criticises freelee is obviously a shill (sarcasm) and the vegans who dont kiss my ass are just take vegans.
      Freelee stills acts like she is the gate keeper for the vegan movement and is just full of herself. Her intentions may be pure but her actions speak louder and quite clearly freelee can never be mature enough to let go of a grudge.

    • @animefangrl0902
      @animefangrl0902 4 года назад +4

      @moths from neptune also, freelee considers periods a bad thing and it's good to lose your period. Which is B.S pseudoscience, who thinks periods are bad for you?
      It's the exact opposite, it's a concern if women just lost their periods with no good explanation or known medical conditions.
      Also, being anti vax and anti chemotherapy is helping NO ONE. Just because Freelee thinks they are toxic doesn't mean she is right, she is very, very ignorant of the facts regarding vaccination and chemotherapy treatments.
      She isn't a credible source for anything substantial, scientific wise and will cherrypick the sources she believes is fact.
      Being an asshole isn't going to win you any favours on the internet, no matter how many people you inspire to become vegan. Having an aggressive " in your face" attitude, will just push people, even if these people are considered emotional "crybabies" by Freelee. They will still reject her message and think she is the crazy vegan lady on the internet.

    I wanted to say though that I don't think comparing animal exploitation/industry to slavery is a very good idea.
    The reasoning behind the comparison appears very sound to me buuuut slavery still exists and also has a huge impact on today's world (and especially slave-descendants' lives) so many many people feel strongly about it.
    They may reject veganism because plenty of vegans make this comparison and it hurts them (actually plenty of people definitely do hate white vegans because of that).

It was also the newest car I had found in my price-range (everything else was super old; I was honestly surprised when I found this one), & while I did not WANT to buy a car w/leather seating, there it was: A used car with no previous accidents or major issues. So I decided to buy it. In the future if I ever were to buy a non-used car, I would NOT buy one w/leather seats. But I think buying a used car is okay in a way since it doesn't contribute to the supply & demand for new cars to be made with leather.

    I enjoyed the video but I really don't think using slavery as an example is beneficial. They are two very different phenomonas and there are a lot of nuances to both. Eating animals is a process of our evolution. Owning humans is rooted in economics and racial policies. Eating animals was beneficial for the human species to evolve, even though as primates we can eat a generalized diet, hunting small game was a way to clothes us and get sufficient calories. Slavery is a byproduct of racism and colonialism. Racism was the ideology that persisted that facilitated slavery to occur. Capitalism and greed are what facilitate animal cruelty today but most people are not engaging in specific acts just supporting the system that provides them with food.

    • @nya5945
      @nya5945 4 года назад +3

      @Jonah Whale that is an interesting take. But I think in the context of the video Unnatural vegan was pointing to the recent past, as she mentions that most people cannot say that they wouldn't own slaves. Again slavery is very complex. If we look back at ancient forms of slavery the way in which they were conducted is different from that of chattle slavery of the transatlantic. I just don't think these two issues can be used in the same manner. Humans and animals are different, and so I think evoking the slavery example is kind of lazy. Slavery has always been unethical. But has eating meat always been unethical? Factoring farming is of course disgusting but what about subsistence farming? Or the hunting practices of small communities in isolated areas? Like I said in my initial comment these issues are both nuanced.

    The antinatalist argument is not a word game. By not bringing someone into the world, you spare them going through the pain they would have experienced, which is good. That this is good should be clear. Preventing suffering is good. By contrast, to believe that not bringing someone into existence somehow harms that person by denying them pleasure doesn't make any sense.
    The person would be subjected to harm by being brought into existence to suffer (so the argument goes that it's good that they're not), but not harmed by not being brought into existence and not getting to experience pleasure (so it doesn't matter that they weren't brought into existence).
    I think the only potential way around this argument, the only way to justify having children, is to argue that the benefit of doing it is for people already in the world (like the parents, broader family, a community, or society at large), and that we should be reasonably sure that the benefit to us will outweigh the harm that will befall them (which we ultimately can't know for sure). Having children is not something we do to benefit them, if we're honest with ourselves. Those of us that do it do it because we want to have children, we want the joys of seeing them grow and learn and have fun, we want the experience of being a parent, or we think it's the right thing to do for society or what not (speaking best case scenarios here, obviously).

    • @kburns2470
      @kburns2470 4 года назад

      To be clear, as soon as these children become part of our lives, they become part of the community which we try to benefit and do right by. So having your second child might benefit your first one, as well as you and your partner and anyone else whose lives might be made better. I'm not suggesting good parents look at their children with the attitude of what they can get out of them once those children are already in the world. I'm specifically referring to the decision to bring them into the world in the first place, which cannot be said to be done to benefit the children themselves (that is, going from not existing to existing isn't doing someone a favour, and they're not harmed if they're not brought into existence). Once they're here, by contrast, all other parental decisions can be motivated by benefitting the child, what's best for them, etc.

    I’d love an entire video about the ethics of eating at a restaurant as a vegan. What should you do when someone brings you an order with dairy in it? Do you let them know it’s wrong? I’d never want to send it back to have it just thrown in the trash. But also, do you let them know they messed up so they don’t do the same thing again? Would it be better to box it up and give it to a non-vegan and then order a different dish?
    Also, how do you order food to make sure it’s vegan when you can’t be back in the kitchen? Do you say it’s an allergy rather than veganism? How about the breads they bring out. Do you ask if it’s vegan? I want to try to make veganism seem super chill and easy and not like all vegans are super paranoid and annoying about their food.

    • @christina7454
      @christina7454 4 года назад +1

      @Jonah Whale so when you eat out and get a wrong or messed up order you just leave your friends sitting there? I'm just trying to understand how that is practical for someone who eats out on a social occasion. I believe that'd make veganism look insane to the friends/family/colleagues you're with.
      But I also don't understand why throwing food away is better than eating it. You may not be able to find someone to take the non vegan food (I live in a very small town with no homeless people, family members might have different tastes than you etc) Organic waste in landfills produces a huge amount of methane and contributes to climate change.

    As a vegan, who has a degree in pharmaceutical biotechnology, I really struggle with the animal testing. I get asked quite frequently how I can study something like I do with the attitude I have towards animal cruelty. What I think most people don’t know or forget is that *every* pharmaceutical product *has* to be tested on animal (by law). Because which human would want to be the one to try it without knowing the lethal dose? Cells just don’t work the same way, body’s do, so these test just aren’t advanced enough.

    • @pep-o-butt672

      So rapists, pedophiles, sex traffickers, drug dealers and murderers have more right than innocent non-human animals? What are the reasons the government doesn't want to test on those people? I mean it would be just 10000% more efficient in every aspect, faster trials, literally free objects to test on AND they't punishing the shitty people who instead would go n jail for 7 years for rape and get out in 3 on excellent behaviour. Shit like that just confuses the hell out of me. Literally hundreds of innocent rats, dogs, cats and monkeys are bred to be murdered and you think it's ok just cause it's the law and the law has no other way do things.

    I get your issues with intersectionality now; I actually went back to school with some inspiration from APHRO-ISM (an awesome book that you all should read, BTW). Specifically, the Ko sisters make the point that while Dr. Crenshaw's theory is good for *analyzing* systemic oppression and how it manifests in different forms in our world...it really doesn't tell us anything about how to get past them and build a world beyond them (which is fair; it was never meant to do that). I personally don't use the term itself in a lot of my videos or writing anymore (without explaining it) because it does lead to a lot of the confusion you talked about. People want to be "woke" when it comes to race issues, LGBT rights, disability rights, and other causes, which isn't a bad thing, but using academic jargon isn't needed to do that. I think it's important to understand systemic oppression, but also to work toward a world beyond it (aka why I started emphasizing the importance of community care).
    Also, Rogue was the character in X-Men with the gray streak. :P I've had a skunk stripe since I was 12 and have often pondered cosplaying as her.

    Not directly related to the vid, but somewhat. I have been watching for a long time but never comment. Just wanted to add some praise to counter critics. I have been a vegetarian for years and am considering a transition to veganism in the future. The major difficulty is being young and under my parents roof, they to an extent will dictate what we eat until i am independent. Flashback to a few years ago when i watched channels like freelee and wanted desperately to be fit&healthy and decided that it would be unattainable for me as i found it ridiculous and nauseating to eat bunches of bananas and gallons of date smoothies every day. I was young and naive but im glad i was never able to attempt a diet like that. Then i found your channel and saw that there are pretty easy ways to eat balanced, “normal” foods (and even to do high protein because i tend to strive for that). At this point, I am confident i will be able to make the transition to veganism down the road. In my opinion, everyone has their right to critique, but your channel presents well-researched ethical & health information, that has personally helped me to more seriously pursue veganism. I believe your channel does way more good than harm. Again, just trying to add to the pool of praise rather than criticism (and share my experience with your channel)

    Vegan Health Fitness and Vegan Sista actually seem like nice people! Too bad neither of them are very active on RUclips anymore 😕 but in other words, I think you did the right thing by unloading your intersectionality videos. Honestly, society needs to be in the right headspace to rationalize it more, where we come up with solutions to solve the systemic racism and oppression. People have been conditioned to ignore it and get hotheaded when it’s brought up. We need to start understanding our differences and accepting each other for who we are while being inclusive, tolerant, and compassionate. 💕

    Hair loss sucks. 😭
    Mine’s been thinning out so much over the last handful of years, and it’s probably due to some of the medications I’ve had to take for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
    I think it’s hard for everybody, regardless of the cause.
    Having had “Disney Princess” hair for most of my life became such a big part of my identity; now with my hair being so different and thinning out, it REALLY hurts how I feel about myself.

    About backyard hens I recently watch a reels that was a great example of how you can "cut corners" without selling the eggs. It was part of the trend to be self sufficient when it comes to food production. The girl was explaining that she doesn't let her chickens to roam the garden freely anymore because they were laying less eggs; however, her justification was that roaming must be stressful for them and that's why there were less eggs. A curious example of cognitive dissonance. If you think that providing a good life to the chicken will provide you with more eggs... you may start viewing it the other way around and assuming that if it provides you more eggs is good for the chicken. In other words, I think the probability of exploration is there even if there is not economic compensation.

    I'm not vegan, so maybe I'm seeing things weirdly here, but I just don't think that animals have the same social rights as humans. They live by completely different rules than the ones that judge modern human society. You can't just pull up the bill of rights to a colony of ants.
    If you want to be vegan it's for you, and because you dislike suffering, and because you like the planet. Don't do it because it's the better thing to do. People are no better than animals because we have morals imo, we're not "more evolved" because of our sympathy. How we do things isn't better than how they do things. We don't know what every animal is, much less how they do things.

    • @Paputsza
      @Paputsza 4 года назад

      @Jonah Whale Nature has it's own laws, survival of the fittest and a lot of other things. They wouldn't know our laws if we told it to them. We can apply unique laws in the way humans treat non-human animals, but since only humans living in society sign a social contract we can't have an actual fair and equal judicial system with animals.
      I'm mainly arguing against the point that the vegan lawyer made btw. I don't think we can apply "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" to other nations of people outside of america persay, much less to animals.

    What do some of these extremist vegans not get about relating to other humans? Do they just hugely struggle with social interaction? 1. The vast majority of people want children and partners (and this is coming from someone that doesn’t really want children and if I do I will adopt). The statistics in the US support that.
    2. People don’t want to live off fruit only
    3. People struggle with health in our society in general, being extremely restrictive won’t be helpful with stopping meat-eating
    4. Being kind and compassionate is always best
    5. Being able to recognize how different human experiences are and how much wealth disparity exists will help you actually help people become vegan.
    6. Do 100 vegan meals on $50 videos instead of fat-shaming, eat only fruit, “anyone can be vegan,” etc type of videos.

Restrictions in my diet spiral into eating disorders very quickly. There are very few Vegan influences online that can be inspirational and helpful without fixating on “health” (which is just cover for “losing weight”).
      So, Unnatural Vegan is helpful in providing a welcoming, inclusive environment that doesn’t throw fatphobic and bad nutritional high horse comments in her viewers’ faces. Trying to find the right information when “loud” or most popular online vegans have the most accessible content is difficult for people with a history of ED, because we’re not looking for “healthy, low-fat, low-protein, low-carb”. Since a lot of it is triggering, it’s difficult navigating it without spiraling, getting scared I’ll hurt myself, etc. Right now, our lunches (and some breakfasts) are vegan, and we’re working on making filling Vegan dinners at least once a week. We’re working on it. :)

    The problem of the commodification of animals is exactly how I feel, though I am a vegetarian and not a vegan. I live in a place where many people have cows and hens as 'kind of' pets(I say 'kind of' because they are wild but are given shelter and food by certain people, but are not trapped in small cages or anything). Cows are not miatreated, given hormones and neither their milk or flesh are sold. These folks do milk the cows and use the milk, and the gens eggs are solely eaten by the people that keep them. When the cows die(naturally) their flesh is made into leather. I feel the same about the people that keep bees and eats their honey.

    In terms of leather vs vegan boots...most work boots are STEEL TOED (a piece of steel is curved around the toes and then placed inside the leather to protect your toes from.falling objects such as tools.) Leather is easier to mold than plastic and more durable meaning the steel won't be worn down or exposed. Leather boots are LITERALLY safer due to the steel toe and plastic boots are often banned from factories (at least it was from mine) for this very reason. So yeah....leather boots are the WAY BETTER choice but it doesnt make you not vegan to use them. It can save your foot from injury. Plastic boots makes your job less safe.
