- May 28, 1972: President Nixon addresses the people of the Soviet Union from the Kremlin following a week-long trip which resulted in the first arms control treaty.
Nixon was the only US president who genuinely wanted to improve relations with the USSR
and in the USSR he was respected
Kennedy wanted to also especially after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
@@bidenwearstrumpscrappypamp1829 The Cuban missile crisis wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the bay of pigs, which Kennedy approved of
@@fonvizin5280 And I am sure people in Chile remember that 'respect' hence warming ties between Maduro and Biden. Anyway, it is good that ideologies lost and realism triumph until Americans because 'freedom crusaders' once again.
@@samulikarjalainen6107 in fact they are already crusaders of freedom. The war in Ukraine is proof of this
Nixon was a damn good statesman.
Seems amazing he was allowed to deliver this speech in the USSR back then. And a very cleverly crafted speech showing a desire for peaceful cooperation without showing any weakness in his duty to protect the USA. Brilliant man. Where are leaders like Nixon now!?
Nixon was one of America’s greatest statesmen of the past 100 years. He actually made policy himself and didn’t rely staff to feed it to him; he understood what he was saying and had a long view and delivered many accomplishments on the world stage. He was also unpredictable and kept his adversaries guessing so they wouldn’t act up. If we have 50% of Nixon today, we would have a much more stable world.
Never knew this existed.
Great speech and great delivery.
I note that many of Nixon's speeches were held without teleprompter, but read either directly from the paper of seemingly from memory in some of his shorter addresses.
What a remarkable contrast to today's puppet-politicians...
--Did Pat Buchanan write this speech?
Nixon had gravitas seldom found in the leader of a democracy.
Never been the biggest fan of American policy but Nixon is the goat.
Geopolitically, Nixon was a good student of history.
I wouldn't say that he was a good student of history. One minute into the speech he claims that their countries had never been at war with each other. Apparently he never heard of the Polar Bear Expedition of 1918.
@@attiliorotondi1259 You think those volunteers constituted a state of war?
@@samusaran13372 Don't you think that invasions imply a state of war? What about the american expeditionary force in Siberia?
@@attiliorotondi1259 No, I would say that's arguing semantics. It's like saying Britain was at war with the United States during the American Civil War because they sold a few warships to the South. Just isn't the same as a state of war. Also, consider the scale.
Nixon RULES!!!
would have loved to be at a Soviet pub during this speech and interviewing the perspective of a 1970s Soviet man at this time. Nonetheless, it was certainly a good speech, one that you like to hear when you think you’re in an arms/ideological race between two countries. Say what you want about Nixon but man, do I feel calm after hearing this one.
Fascinating. I've only read one of these speeches.
What has Nato to say about this great speech by Nixon?
6:06 he lifted all this from the TV series kung foo.
Fascinating footage! I've read this speech, but I have never SEEN him deliver this speech. Please upload more videos when you can. Thank you. :)
Now I see why they paint Nixon as a bad man
Great video. I don't see today's leaders performing such a speech today.
That’s because we are evolution into the Idiocracy movie now, give it 30 more years and we are there with people getting dumber and stupider each year, people are so unknowingly about everything today… the kids today only care about social media and their followers with pictures of Botox and butt lifts to how drunk they got last night
That trip seemingly helped.
It never happened... supposedly.
Nixons life was tragic. I think he gets too much of a bad rep cuz of Watergate
An online said that watergate is similar to snatching a packet of gum at the store today.
That and his rampant disregard for the rule of law, his meddling in affairs in Latin America, and the fact that he committed treason by sabotaging LBJ's peace talks with North Vietnam to get a better chance of getting elected
Today his behavior would be no big deal but the press hated him (although they hate Trump more)
It was the SECOND visit. Why did he say "my fourth visit"?
Mikhail Bogachev twice as Vice President.
fantastic speech! Nixon will be allways my president. this comments was from Budapest where i hope still like Nixon. Mr.Nixon made as never before and after Nixon understood Russia and China made real progress. Russians are not enemy of Usa. Alsó Hungary are not but Usa should get out from Ukraina or there else will be conflict. i try not to show Russian millitary on the base i still hope ín common sense. if you search however against Russia noone can win ever. Im sure they are very good people and provoke such nation is a big mistake.
you right, comrade
Dobee vecher -> should be more like -> dobreey
Tricky, we hardly knew ye

great progressive president
@@rohankalelkar8545 It has been said that Nixon was the last real CONSERVEative president!
@@rockyracoon3233 The things he said in his speeches about the environment would get him kicked out of the GOP today.
Given the events and presidents of the previous decades a serious re-evaluation of Nixon's presidency is in order. A re-evaluation I think puts him amongst some of the best presidents.
The Soviet people had never heard his speech either on TV or radio.
Yes they did, it was broadcasted live in Televison and Radio across the Sovjet Union
Wish donald trump could do the same today, but he would be called KGB stooge by both democrats and neocons :/
Do you live in an alternate universe in which the USSR still exists?
LOL didn’t know if you noticed but the USSR are long gone my friend, or at least officially
