  • This my version of a Walkabout, a vision quest, returning to the lands of my youth, where I spent an inordinate amount of time from age 19 to age 40. The landmarks are familiar at first, but then a strange, alien, architecture becomes apparent. And then there it was, the once magnificent BBC Television Centre, broken to pieces, but rebuilt to look almost the way it was. Life has yet to re-inhabit the circular corridors, and make use of the three TV studios which remain after 5 of their sister studios were bulldozed to death. But they live on in my memory!
Accompanied by my wise mentor, Alan Watts, I drive by in horror, sadness, and to be honest, ordinariness, wondering who I used to be, and who I've become. A decade after leaving the employ of the Corporation, I feel like the Doctor, who was though up inside an office within yards of where I drive down Wood (Memory) Lane.
A renegade too, perhaps, I see from a higher dimensional viewpoint than most others. Long ago I moved beyond the confines of dualistic thinking, which may be perfect for the medium of radio and television, but that way of thinking induces such ignorance in the masses who watch and listen to BBC output.
Fortunately, over the last five years we've seen greater technological stride in global tele-communication than we saw in the previous 25 years, when I started work at the BBC. As it happens, I love the BBC, but in the same way one loves an annoying sibling, who's endearing but annoying with it.
