didn’t expect CNA to make a documentary about this. it’s super well made and I’m incredibly happy that they actually made a video about this seemingly unknown process. good job CNA!
Yes please make arrangements to donate/sell decommissioned train parts to members of the public. We transport enthusiasts are more than willing to snag these and like mentioned in the video, it reduces wastage. It can create a supply-demand as more trains get scrapped and great revenue for SMRT/SBST/LTA.
Wow, I'm surprised and did not expect that CNA did this documentary video about decommissioning of trains! (Outside of the 'Third Rail' drama, which is not counted although 095/096 has been scrapped afterwards) Trains play a important part of the nation's development and Singapore is no exception especially since our rail network is expanding endlessly, currently the R151 trains are being introduced as a replacement for older trains to continue their legacy forward with better technologies. At least, several KNS decommissioned trains are being preserved for other uses which is great since KNS is a unique train model most people (including me) likes and comfortable to ride is the basis for the newer trains including underground lines
We also had that for SAFTI City, to be able to power equip both trains, buses, taxis, cupboards. Yesterday I saw Hyundai i40 ComfortDelGro taxi in SAFTI City.
Love this video! Thanks for showing us the glimpse of how the older trains are being decommissioned. Hope to see more efforts in reducing waste through innovative ideas with different stakeholders and public. Well done team!
Singapore needs a place to properly preserve its transport history. Every other World City has it, along with a proper museum - London, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Hong Kong. Singapore can't be and will never be considered a World City if society doesn't think seriously how to preserve its history and heritage. The newly built training testing facility in Tuas could easily be a place allocated for such purposes. Just one car of C151, C651, and C751B each parked at the facility and looked after minimally is more than enough. Singapore's way for preserving things is more or less an commercial afterthought and I have not seen one train or bus preservation project locally that is not repurposed for some commercial activity and fully appreciates its heritage value. Also, trains these days are built more like iPhones and I doubt they would last as long as the first generation trains due to the aluminum material and the complexity of these electronics.
I just hope they do end up preserving at least a few cars, since Singapore has already lost all of its steam locomotives (I am not sure about diesel and electric locomotives)
In Singapore the public just works until they retire, they have no time to think about the past or future, until the working culture changes here, nothing else can change.
@@advaiththekingthere is a French steam locomotive displayed at the Gardens By The Bay, and in addition in Britain there is a Hunslet locomotive that formerly worked in Singapore before retuning home in 1955.
I’m amazed at the reuse of some of the interior fittings for public use, not that different from the various Tait train bodies and Melbourne W class trams also repurposed around the state of Victoria
In Japan, the railway company will semd some parts to the auction so the railway fans can get it as memorabilia. It is another way to reuse and can get another income from the decommissioning.
I was a singaporean back then but I still feel like retiring these trains are kinda sad because they’re too iconic to Singapore and deserve to stay in the railway for abit longer
Hopefully this video can also promote us train enthusiasts for the public to know what we oversee and do, such as documenting train rides, creating memories with transport and share with commuters and the larger trainspotter community little known facts of our transport network.
@@rizkyadiyanto7922👏👏👏 even the average normal Japanese have the culture of discarding items in good working condition, prpbably due to lack of space in their household.
It’s definitely ingenious to have to parts being given a new life within Singapore. I could see the seats being used as chairs across Singapore. They can take a lot of weight. Using MRT trains as hotels would be ingenious too if someone made it work. Sydney has one that has backpackers hostel utilising old trains for 4 or 8 sleepers.
😊🙏 OMG! Love those older more melodious chime sounds of MRT train doors closing or the SBS or Trans-Island buses' stop signal chime sounds with their pretty purple-pink lights of the 1990s ... Brought back so many fond memories of the 1990s & early 2000s when Internet & Smartphones were not part of our lives yet ... Thank You So Much CNA for the efforts & for sharing! 😊🙏
4:00 old Singaporean Chinese and Indian communicate with each other in Malay. I hope Malay will be revived as an alternative lingua franca in Singapore.
It is an interesting video for a railfan in Seoul, Korea. It is quite sad that most old train (parts) from here are just wasted. Few of them are stored in museums, only to turn into something similar to garbage. It is great news that some parts are donated to those who need them in Singapore, yet selling most of the parts to the railfan to minmise the waste and earn some extra money to lower the fare or to improve the train service might be better. Leaving some trainsets in a museum is also great. I was shocked when I saw so many people waiting in line to buy train components in Japan.
HK preserved some retired train cars, repainted another train in the retro livery, converted a platform into a temporary museum with the last remaining "Yellow Head" train, and sold straphangers. Sg doesn't even have a rail museum. Perhaps sell it to those who want to preserve them?
I think Philippines and Indonesia should learn something from Singapore, repurposing train parts. In the Philippines, LRTA 1000 Class (Gen 1 of Manila LRT Line 1) is soon to be retired since it's been running since 1986 and is obviously gonna go to Santalon Depot like Car 1037 which was decommissioned because of Rizal Day Bombing. While in Indonesia, trains are being stacked like boxes in a remote area. If Philippines do this, I would like to have a pair train doors and the route map.
Curitiba (Brazil) converts old buses into mobile clinics, classrooms & offices. Cape Town (South Africa) has a restaurant in an old rail car, and has two working trains as mobile clinics bringing healthcare services to rural communities. And I'm sure a carriage or two could make a great film set / prop. Or perhaps an addition to a kid's playground... Where there's a will, there's a way! Let's keep on taking care of our precious planet for future generations...
Sadly, for those who are wondering whether they can buy small parts like hand-grips and manufacturer's plates from the scrapyard. Bad news, the Toyotron Scrapyard isn't selling them. I just called them.
Pulau Belakang Mati was the old name of Sentosa. It means Behind Death Island. The island was renamed "Sentosa" in September 1970, which means peace and tranquility in Malay, from a suggestion by the public. In March 1971, the government announced plans to develop the island into a holiday resort for local visitors and tourists, and a S$124-million plan for developing Sentosa was unveiled in March 1972.
When can Singapore finally increase their train speed I'm hoping like at least 120km/h that would shorten traveltime significantly and promote more travelling and exploring also the fatigue from taking the train back and forth will significantly reduce
I’m sad that these trains are scrapped, I rode it a few times when I was in Singapore and I became a fan of it, I’m not sure if I’ll get use to the new trains when I come back there
To me actually, the C151B and R151 trains are ok and comfortable to ride especially with R151 (although lack of seats but larger gangway and cold aircon)
Donate the seats to bus stop, hdb lobby, town centre walkway part of the decor of series of memorabilia since we know train last so long & parts can still be recycled, repaint, reuse, upcycled so we don't contribute to a 1 time use culture where its more cost effective vs maintenance of old parts.
I hope that after this recent September 25 EWL train disruption incident, LTA and SMRT will consider sending those present 49 first generation trains to the scrapyard immediately! Imagine riding on a train that is 35 years old and still in service! Singapore buses are scrapped after in service for the minimum of 17 years but the trains are still in service after 35 years and still not sent for scrap! Now I think Singapore has been ridiculed by other countries even since the recent September 25th train disruption incident. If I am working in LTA, I will have already suggested that all the rest of the first generation trains be sent to the scrapyard immediately after new trains are being deployed.
Convert them to specialty restaurants spread across the island. Just don't make it expensive for the owners to buy and operate their restaurant business.

What will happen to the new PMSM propulsion systems on retrofitted C151s?
37 años y los cambian, aquí en chile los veteranos NS-74 cumplirán 50 años y los están renovando para darles 10 años más de servicio.
