Oh man, so the question of which story of Ys Origin is canon is actually a way cooler question that I think most people know. The thing is, in the lore - none of the games actually really happen as you see them. Since the very first game for the PC88, the lore has always been that the game you are playing is just a *novelization* based upon Adol's journals written over 1000 years after his death by a historian of Adol for a non-academic/general audience. This is why so many games, including Ys 8, start with a bit of text saying "Do you know the name Adol Christin?" - that is a segment from the introduction to that particular novelization. Lines like this tell you a bit about the world of these historians... And who still knows about Adol's adventures. Just academics, mostly. But they want people to remember. We know a bit more about the worlds of these people - they have rapid transport, the 'age of chaos, light, and darkness' that Adol lived in is over, magic has likely largely left the world, etc... This is revealed in bits and pieces here and there across many games if you look for them. This has unique implications for a bunch of the games. Like, there are four different versions of Ys 4. Ys: Memories of Celceta, Ys 4: Mask of the Sun, Ys 4: Dawn of Ys, and Ys 4: Mask of the Sun - A New Interpretation. Each of these, canonically, is simply a different historical take on the exact same journal (that Ys 4 has more versions than any other journal kind of suggests it's the most popular Adol story in the contemporary timeline...) Anyway, so Ys Origin is a bit weird, since it's not based directly on Adol's journals. It is likely pieced together from a lot of different sources, some of which certainly had to be Adol's journals. As a result, in terms of 'canon,' Ys Origin's three stories are likely three competing stories that are all entirely historically plausible, but which the writer lacks enough info to know for sure which is the msot likely. Then again, unlike other games in the series, it is not explicitly stated, to the best of my knowledge, that Ys Origin is a novelization - maybe it's the first, and only, time we get to see the real story? That, too, is uncertain. Anyway, in that sense, all three stories are canonical. And none of them are. Heck, maybe it was written by an Adol truther, who left him out because he doesn't believe he ever existed.
@@magikarpblaster it'd be too sad if none are true. But I like the fact that yunica's love interest doesn't did in Hugo's story. I prefer it when a story like this has the different segments fit together into one story.

been playing Ys since 1990 with the Turbografx-16 CD version of Ys Book 1 and 2 was a big breakthrough in music, voice acting, and cut scenes in a videogame at the time. Ys Book 1 and 2 also had PC and portable versions, but for me the TG-16 CD will always be my favorite version.
@@anonamatron I actually own the Ys 4 Dawn of Ys disc, but never actually played it due to it being in Japanese. I should really look into the emulation scene for it translated. What really made the TG-16 CD Ys games so ahead of their time was the music and voice acting 30 years ago when we generally just had chip tunes and text.

Origin was my first Ys game, and I was genuinely surprise by how much I enjoyed it. For me, the hardest part of stepping into this series with Origin is coming to terms with the disappointment that this is Yunica's only game. I found her to be such an endearing character. I would love to see her get one more go with another spin-off game.
started the game and found it wasn’t my cup of tea so i appreciate the review. “Dolls with big ass eyes” probably the best description I’ve heard so far lmao
Ys Origin is my favorite 2D Ys game. I have played it (and buy it) soooooooo many times. A tip for the bosses is that if your lv is not high enough, you can barely defeat them. The first boss Velagunder, for example, you will keep slipping off its arm if your dex is too low, and thus causing you issue to defeat the boss. Roos' text can be translated into English. And if you are playing as the third character, boost into demon form can allow you to read their text box. And welcome to the Ys wiki, I'm glad our works helped you know more about Ys lore (or confused you more XD).
Thank you Falcoms Finest, Ys Origin is by far the game I had the most fun. Lady Pelvic, happy to hear you had as much fun as I did. Go get ‘em Girl 😎👍 It truly is a truly charming game indeed
It makes me very happy to see you enjoy another Ys game. I can't explain in words how happy it makes me but know its a lot haha. I love hugo fact and 3rd character a lot because of the lines they are given
The Ancient Ys Vanished Saga and Origins are absolutely my favorite parts about the Ys games. They're like the root of all things that came together in the series and is more rich in story than the later titles. I'm just hoping that one day we can meet the Goddesses again in one final act.
Ys is on my radar now thanx to your videos because I've honestly never heard anything about this series. I used to see it in stores and stuff but was unfamiliar with the games. Another great video, I'm informed now.

I heard in another video that your Mom played DnD. Your family sounds very interesting. I never have played DnD but one game I absolutely love is Baldur's Gate for Mobile and PC. It's a DnD adventure that you must play if you never have. It can be pretty unforgiving but that is part of why it's so good.
I'm so glad you liked this one! It does have some neat connections to Ys 1 and 2, but eesh, are they rough; Ys 1 on the SEGA Master System was my second Ys game ever, and it took me months to drag myself even as far as I got. I've heard that the Chronicles versions are better, even though they still have the bump system; I'll get there someday... Anyway, yes, great combat, great music, and cool environments; I have a thing for games that all take place in a single long dungeon, so a little bias there, but this one kept it fresh. I don't think I liked any of the characters in either of my playthroughs, but haven't played the third character yet. Since you liked this one, you may like Oath in Felghana and/or Ark of Napishtim, since they use the same basic engine; Oath in Felghana is a bit closer, but I liked Ark of Napishtim better, just because I didn't like a lot of what Oath in Felghana did as a remake of 3.

You might enjoy Oath in Felghana and Ark of Napishtim even more as the gameplay is the same but it's not all one dungeon. You've got villages with NPCs who have their own little stories as well.
Excellent review! Actually I'm on the 3rd play with Toal and I'm on the way for the Platine (soon "nightmare" for the 3 and the Boss mode awaits me...a little painful but when you love...lol) This is my first Ys game but I'm completely seduced by the franchise since 2006 with Ark Of Napishtim and Oath Of Felghana in the same vein like this one. I remember to listen the awesome soundtracks and saw some Playthroughs but never had the chance to play them on console until 2020 on Ps4 with Origin. Lacrimosa and Monstrum Nox seems excellent too with more open world and I plan to do them soon. For me Origin is clearly a fantastic game, not perfect for some of the reasons you evoking but what an ambiant and personnality in this game...and what can I say about the soundtrack, just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! One of my favorite of Ys games for sure. I'm a agree for Yunica, she's very attaching like Hugo. Toal is more difficult and technic to play but he's cool. Anyway thanks for the review which made honor to this gem!
Not played any Ys games but have been thinking about them for a while, this one is both cheaper than the rest and on Switch so am definitely considering it now
If your getting into Ys I definitely suggest the Turbo CD Book 1 & 2 amazing games and of course since it's getting a switch port the remake of 3 called Oath of Felgella
I'm finishing up memories of celceta and it's a pretty chill game. But I LOVED Ys 8. I'm gonna have to go back to yoir review to figure out how you didn't like it haha
Ys XIV is definitely worth playing, it has a lot less of the bloat (gameplay variance) that VIII had and is super fun and actually has a good story for once. Predictable, but if you've played Tales of games you know to set the bar low for any JRPG story that comes after that. I went into it completely blind and didn't regret anything. Not sure where you heard anything negative about it, if by expands open the VIII combat you mean makes it better and more modern,.That's basically what I'd want from Memories of Celceta, which has somehow aged poorly already when compared to the PS4 era Ys games, In my opinion.
Great review! This game looks really fun and I definitely want to check the game out but I do have a few questions 1. Do you recommend playing the game on hard mode? 2. Does the game have voice acting? (this isn’t a big deal but I do just want to set expectations) 3. Aside from Ys 1 & 2, do you think it’s worth getting familiar with any other ys games or should I just jump straight into origins?
Hello! 1. Um...I have a hard time answering that because that really depends on YOU. 2. Nope! 2. Oh you can jump RIGHT into Origins! I think having additional knowledge will always prove beneficials but for what it's worth I've only played two Ys games (Memories of Celceta and Ys8) before playing this and I still enjoying it a lot. Couple it with Ys 1 and 2 oh man you'll get even more out of it!
Yeah the water prison music is my personal favorite, and i always listen to it when I'm make new projects. And to me, Ys Origin is another personal favorite from the Ys Series. Sorry that Ys 8 left a bad taste in your mouth. But i can't wait to see your thoughts about Ys IX. And Yunica is a great loveable character to me.
I really do wish Yunica and Hugo felt even more different, or, they actually explored different parts of the tower, I played through Origins with Yunica, had a great time, but could NOT get into it with Hugo, just too samey.
Dude Ys I and II hits different when you play them! The boss fights are intensifying and because of the bump mechanic, when you defeat a boss it is rewarding!
I find it funny that Vita didn't get an "even" but Xbox one did, given which console was still in production at the time. Goes to show just how little the Japanese market cares about the Xbox lol
Origin, Oath in Felghana and VIII are my favourites... but I guess some of games always get a lot of hatred (still don't understand why anyone would like Persona 5).
Yeah the demo of Ys IX is not good. I don't know what's happening there, but I think the issue for me is the FPS, is not constant at 60. The game looks worse than Ys 8, which is a lush game, but that's to be expected, the area was developed to be more "grim". I will play yeah, when it releases on Pc and I can like, play at 60fps because it's an action game, and I don't want to feel slow there?
Hi! Hello! Happy Friday! See Falcom Hive? I don't dislike all the Ys games. Just Ys 8.

I think having additional knowledge will always prove beneficials but for what it's worth I've only played two Ys games (Memories of Celceta and Ys8) before playing this and I still enjoying it a lot. Couple it with Ys 1 and 2 oh man you'll get even more out of it!
@@PelvicGaming Ok, thanks! I’ll definitely check this out when I have the chance.
Yess best track!
Also I will not be touching ys9
@@PelvicGaming oh, its cool.
Indeed! Why do dreaded water levels always have the best tunes?
It' beacuse if they don't have at least that, then they are irredemable.
To me Ys orgins it's that game I see I get interested and for get it's fun as hell but m gonna give it a good shake senice I liked celesta
Bad Shon. Go back to Among Us!
I really do wish Yunica and Hugo felt even more different, or, they actually explored different parts of the tower, I played through Origins with Yunica, had a great time, but could NOT get into it with Hugo, just too samey.
oath in felghana is a great Ys game to play next if you haven't already :)
This game is just so awesome. How the heck did you not like Ys 8 though?
I hope one day you play trails in the sky fc. It’s an amazing game but with a lot reading involved.
You gotta play ys IX, I would go as far to say that it's better than ys VIII.
Dude Ys I and II hits different when you play them! The boss fights are intensifying and because of the bump mechanic, when you defeat a boss it is rewarding!
Getting a physical of Origins is rather pricey. It's from Limited Run. Just get it digitally.
Still waiting for a top 10 jrpg villains list! I know you won't be able to choose just 5 😆
I find it funny that Vita didn't get an "even" but Xbox one did, given which console was still in production at the time. Goes to show just how little the Japanese market cares about the Xbox lol
Origin, Oath in Felghana and VIII are my favourites... but I guess some of games always get a lot of hatred (still don't understand why anyone would like Persona 5).
whos lets play did you watch?
5000 views only 400 lights come on people
I really Details about this game
Yeah the demo of Ys IX is not good.
I don't know what's happening there, but I think the issue for me is the FPS, is not constant at 60. The game looks worse than Ys 8, which is a lush game, but that's to be expected, the area was developed to be more "grim". I will play yeah, when it releases on Pc and I can like, play at 60fps because it's an action game, and I don't want to feel slow there?
i played and beat the game and had no problem with the framerates. The gameplay was smooth.
The demo also had some lock on issues. But its not in the final product

I’m not the biggest fan of dungeon crawler rpgs, I’m gonna pass but good review tho 👍
Food4Dogs brought me here :)
Hello and welcome!!
Hear i am pronouncing it Y.S every time 😂 instead os EEze(Ys)
Why are water levels the most annoying to play through but have the best music? Because you need something to get yourself through it
Is this better than Oath in Felghana?
Way way better. Oath kinda sucks imo, the enemies and bosses are annoying as hell. Plus dungeons are too big imo. Ark and Origin are much better
@@Walamonga1313 lol... Oath > Origin > Ark. Ark actually sucked
Nailed it.
Is this digital only?
this ones my fav
Wow your hair has gotten so long 😍
