Thanks for making this video and getting the word out about the new blade! Glad my original comment helped! Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re a vital part of the LR community! I’m going to be in the UK for the Goodwood FoS - I might try to stop by your shop if I have some free time!
Hi - I am trying to get some press passes for the goodwood festival of speed - so maybe we can meet up there ? you picked a great show to go to - i know Land Rover has a big surprise at the show.....I know what it is but cannot tell you ! You will not be disappointed.
@@L663 I’m going to be at Goodwood on Friday the 12th of July - that was the only date I could get tickets for. If you’re going to be there on Friday, I’d love to meet up! I’m going to take a guess that they will be bringing the OCTA, as the global reveal is on July 3rd.
@@L663 I’m there on the Friday Simon…I must keep a watch out for you!!😀😀🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@L663are you still planning on going to Goodwood? I managed to get a Saturday ticket, so I’ll be there on Friday and Saturday. Let me know if you’ll be there!
@@cincyrovers I managed to blag a press pass for the show. I plan to be there on Friday and Saturday
Thanks for this - useful! My rear wiper wash wasn't working but the numberplate area jet was firing water across the drive. I couldn't tell how to get those jet nozzles off.. I found both jets blocked, and even the end of the feed tube in the arm was clogged with a soap-like substance. Even after visibly cleaning the tube out it wasn't squirting so I put my thumb over the numberplate nozzle and got some helping hands to push the washer button down. It spluttered and shot gunk out from the wiper feed then started flowing properly - job done! I was able to clear the nozzle with a pin and lots of patience and blowing through it to save 22 quid.
Even though I don't have a Defender, still love watching your videos 😂
Planning to buy one in the future once I save up enough money 👍
I love to see your works
Thanks !
Well Simon…… that is the first time I’ve heard the word virginal in a 4x4 vehicle test on new parts!!!!
Clearly the summer heat is getting to you!!!!
Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿👍😎😂😂🍸🍸
🤣
Well i think everyone knew what i meant.... I have to be careful with my words... there are normally a few suspect comments in my commentry.... some more intentional than others !
No matter how hard I try (without pulling the window out!) I can’t pull old arm off, after unscrewing nut. I notice in video it stops then starts again with “we’ve fiddled with it (!)”, so how do I loosen it please?!?
What an absolutely b'stad of a job! I already had the new style arm and blade but the blade retaining clip in the arm had partially broken and the wiper blade was also moving longtitudinally in it's push-fit clip, so I needed to replace both parts. Cover and wheel off, old blade disconnected from the jet, arm retaining nut removed, but the arm just would not budge, no matter what I threw at it. Tried lubricating the part, leveraging, twisting, pulling as hard as I dare, without snapping the plastic arm, but it didn't want to know! What was your secret sauce Simon? I thought about replacing just the main arm and spring but that was beyond fiddly so, in the end, I botched and superglued a new retaining clip in to the existing arm, and clipped the new blade to that. A bit Heath Robinson but it did the trick, at least for now. What an absolute pullava. Had to do the same job on the Yeti. 30 seconds tops!
A couple of thoughts...
1 - is this not covered under warranty ? I guess if you have a new arm it should be covered ?
2 - if this a common fail could we 3D print a clip to fix this ?
3 - I cannot remember how we got the arm off - its sort of missing in the video - but we did not use a puller.
@@L663 Many thanks for the reply. A 3D printed retaining clip, which could be pushed securely in to the back of the arm, and in to the arrow-shaped slot immediately next to the OEM clip, (which was broken in my case), would be a good idea and avoid the necessity to remove and replace the arm. Yes, it would mean that the wiper blade moves circa 10mm towards the nearside, and so would the coverage arc, but that would be fine. Not sure whether the idea is commercially viable though, as consumer demand would likely be very minimal and depend on whether the retaining clip in the arm was broken or not.
Not making the old version blade available is a bit cheeky of JLR to say the least. However, the new design looks much better. In my experience the performance of the original washer has always been a bit rubbish. Also, one of my jets became clogged and I found it impossible to get at to clean without removing the spare wheel. Brilliant design, eh?
Handy tip: if you stand close to the rear when testing the jets (with an assistant operating the washer switch) you get very wet feet from the rear camera washer. 🤣
You will note I left Destiny at the rear for the test - she did not complain of wet feet !
Lovely job Simon 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Coincidentally, I've had to replace the rear wiper blade on my Disco Sport today. Luckily a Bosch replacement for £6.86p from Halfords did the trick!
Strange coincidence!
Great videos, out of interest what’s the box added tor the outside of the back door ( looks like a waterproof box ?? )
Simon I did recently try to source a blade for my 2020 110 X and ran into the same issue. I just changed the fronts and left the rear. Now I know why ! Thanks. Also how dumb of JLR....
The new design is cool - no problem with that - but no need to discontinue the old blade.
Simon…that new blade with built in water spray is much like the Mercedes original on my SL…you cannot buy any aftermarket blade and a new one was £100 but that was three years ago! The older design Defender blade does look a bit amateurish in engineering terms so guess someone was given the job of improving it but kept the complexity! I see the rear wiper on the L494 disappears under the spoiler so that looks like fun to be enjoyed one day! Maybe you have a video on that somewhere..I shall have to look and rehearse! 😀😀😀😀Richard
Morning Richard - we have a video on changing the wipers on the Evoque - there is a secret mode for wiper change... i think it is the same on the L494 !
@@L663 Hello Simon! Thank you…I will have a look. I have not had time to get to those mudflaps…maybe later but first the allotment…an idea that seemed right but has faded a great deal since…last year it was rubbish! 😬😬😃😃😃
For $7 you can buy a refill of the rubber in the wipers. Pop the end caps off, slide out the rubber, cut a retaining notch in the rubber and slide in the new ones. 10 minute task.
Sounds like a good idea - I will look into this !
I have a defender that’s a year old and my rear wiper blade needs replacing, do I actually have to take the spare tire
Off just to do this?! 😭
I think you can pull the blade off with the wheel on the door - clearly for the video is better to see what is happening with the wheel removed !
I have a new video for you!!😅. Now that the defender 110 is hitting 4 yrs old. Can you do a video on how to replace the battery on the TCU to resolve this error message “SOS Limited Functionality Error on Land Rover defender”
Hi Steve - this is interesting - i know how to do this but there is a problem. I dont think Land Rover want me to show the TCU location - or how to remove the battery - this could be seen to help thieves disable the TCU ( even though they all know how to do it ! )
@@L663 I was reading the online manual for this. It states the car must be put into service mode. The manual said to achieve service mode in one of three ways. I don’t see service mode in my app, so can I call LR to have the car placed into service mode? The manual says the TCU can be corrupted if this battery is replaced outside of service mode. The actually battery online is only $30.00 dollars and LR wants $400.00 to replace the battery. What a pickle to be in! 😆. The warning light is now constantly on.
@@stevenbrice1681 To get into service mode on the app - Go HOME > then "...More" at the bottom of screen ... then at the top under image of your car there is a "Vehicle Settings" ( its in small font and does not look clickable ) click on this > Service mode is at the bottom.
Let me know if this works.
I will do a video to help others !
@@L663 yes! The app does have this “service mode” option. It’s a slider toggle. I read that the car must be in service mode and the negative lead removed from battery when replacing the TCU battery. Spoke to LR parts today and they explained where the unit is. Service did confirm that these batteries need replacing on year 3-4, at $430.00 labor. I’m going to try and do this myself! 😉
are you planning doing anything like that for the older defender, for the front and maybe the rear ?
I need to look at that - would seem a really good idea - the blades are approx the correct size
I haven’t used my rear wiper in months. The blade came off one day and has never been the same. It scratches my rear glass.
Happy to send you my old one - nothing wrong with it !
A281h with clip removed looks the same as the oe one
Or a381h if longer
Boom Boom!! 💥 💥
🙏🙏🇬🇧
What a faff to replace a wiper blade!
Yes I don’t mind Land Rover improving the rear wiper but making the old one obsolete seems unfair!
Unfair! If ever one was in doubt about businesses paying lip service to sustainability - here it is. Not to be able to replace a simple wiper blade is ridiculous. What next - having to replace a rim to buy a new tyre. Great vids.
@@D-WFR It gets better - even the new blades and arms are both on back order at Land Rover...
First
Does seem from I've found that both Bosch and Valeo have that clip on them so maybe it is a dealer only part although Auto Doc do seem the sell a possible replacement like the one you took off originally with a Denso make.
