Good question. I am not sure as I have never tried it. Buttercream frosting and white chocolate have a different consistency, so I'm not sure how much gel food coloring to advise to add to it. If you do try it, start with very little drops of gel food coloring.

Can I use whipped butter cream frosting or cream cheese frosting instead of white frosting? They're out of the white at the store.
Hey! Yes, it should be fine. You may need to add more food coloring depending on the color of the base frosting!

Hi Sarah! I have not tried it with chocloate frosting, but I do not think it would work since the cocoa powder is overpowering in color.
