    • 4-5 Medium sized potatoes - Serving size - 2-3 adults
    • 4 Tablespoons of butter
    • Salt & Pepper (Optional)

    • Peel potatoes and cut into cubes
    • Rinse freshly cut potatoes in a colander until residue is gone from potatoes
    • Pour diced potatoes into a medium sized pot
    • Add water - add enough water to cover potatoes - You will want at least 1 inch of water above your potatoes
    • Add salt - your preference on how much to add
    • Turn stove eye on high and bring your potatoes to a boil
    • Once your potatoes begin to boil, turn your stove eye down to a medium or medium/low
    • Continue to cook your potatoes until you can get a fork to enter potato without any hesitation
    • Once potatoes are finished cooking, grab a sturdy plate for draining your water - SEE VIDEO ON HOW TO DO THIS
    • Once you have drained 3/4 of the water out of the pot, add your butter, salt & pepper
    • Let the potatoes, water, butter, salt & pepper sit for about 5-10 minutes before serving - This will allow the water to absorb into the potato and create a creamy texture
    ENJOY!

My mother was born in 1923 and she just put enough water to cover the potatoes. She never poured water off because you poured off the goodness and she always added a little thickening, which was flour. And of course butter and salt and pepper.

Stewed potatoes are suppose to be thickened with a cornstarch slurry

I think potato soup would have some sort of cream or milk in it as well. If this works for you, then have at it. Thank you so much for watching! 😊

I am a northerner, and a friend of mine told me her mom made stewed potatoes. I came to RUclips to find out what that was. How do you eat them? With the water/butter “juice”, or do you serve with a slotted spoon? Then that would defeat the purpose of saving water in the pot, right?

You eat the stewed potatoes with the water and juice. That’s what makes them stewed potatoes. I hope you enjoy! 😘

We always ate it served over rice as a meal. Maybe cornbread on the side.

This is supposed to have cornstarch added to thicken the juice into a gravy-like thing. You just made boiled potatoes.

Hi, You don't need corn starch to thicken the juice. All you need to do is mash up some of the potatoes in the water. Bam! You have stewed potatoes. Thanks for watching!

How long do you cook the potatoes?

    • @HowDoYouCookBackToBasics
      @HowDoYouCookBackToBasics  3 года назад +1

Until they get tender in the middle. If you an cut through a large potato dice with a fork, then you're good to go.

My grandmother used to add something to her stewed potatoes to thicken them, but I don't know what it was. I wish I knew because her potatoes were really good!

@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics It might have been a slurry of flour and milk stirred into the potatoes. I'm going to try that one day to see if it's the flavor I remember. Thank you for the video as it has refreshed my memory of stewed potatoes that I haven't eaten in years!

@@tennesseegrands6620 It could also have been corn starch. I prefer using corn starch as it doesn't give the "raw flour" taste, which to avoid that the mixture has to cook a relatively much longer time.

Any type of potato you want to use is fine. I've probably watched most of the videos on YT and they usually mention that it's your choice. Also, most people thicken with either flour, cornstarch, or cornmeal (yes, even cornmeal). You may also add any seasonings you want to add. Some recipes include onions, too.
