I had a bad bout of this 6 years ago...herniated disc in L5 and S1...all the way to my big toe, very discomforting. I'm a programmer for 35 years and sitting all day did me in. This is not a quick fix and took me 8 months to not be in as much discomfort and probably over 1 year to get to just discomfort...I'm pain free now. I started by getting a stand up desk for work and building up to standing all day instead of sitting. I laid face down on the floor for long times at home to get a tad bit a relief. A round of anti-inflammatory and nerve drugs help take the edge off the pain. One of the first exercises was just WALKING, with small goals like getting two houses down, then to the end of the block, etc. The treadmill became my friend. The best PT exercises for me were Planks, Bird Dogs, Dead Bugs, and the face down exercises in this video. I also had great success with the figure 4 stretch. You have to do the PT exercises every day... even now I still do them...just not as frequent. I also dropped 50 pounds which also helped remove strain on my back. As described in the video, the pain slow retreated... first out of my big toe, then a week later out of my calf and so on up your leg until finally it is just in your lower back and eventually just fades away. It was a long journey but as you see progress with the pain slowly retreating up your leg it helps to keep you motivated.
Thank you for sharing your experience and long recovery. I just need to do the exercises shared by Bob and Brad constantly, more often and be patient that in time my pain will be lessened. Big thanks to Bob and Brad for putting this together! Much appreciated!
This is so accurate. 8 months into my recovery and I’m just now starting to see relief from my L5/S1 disc bulge. Dr. Stuart McGill saved my life. His book “Back Mechanic” is a must read for anyone suffering from back pain.
OMG! I am suffering with this now can you please tell what nerve pain meds you took do I can adk my doc to prescribe some for me to get some relief! I cannot deal with this pain anymore my doctor seems to be clueless about this pain!
This gives me some hope. IT as well, so I sit all day--or at least used to. Went to the dr. way later than I should have, so I've only been stretching a couple months. Mine has been pretty much just in my hamstring/butt area on the left side. Ready to be comfortable again!
@@gesuyarou663 be careful with stretching. A lot of the recommended stretches on RUclips and the internet are actually the last thing you want to do and will only worsen the injury. Thanks for giving from your hearts and helping others to improve their condition. I know you’ve helped me address and move through back pain and feel like I have some tools to deal with the sciatica I’m currently greatly pained by. Much love and 🙏 to you Bob. I am battling this hell now! Nine months. Walking is very difficulty and going up steps. PT, the infra Ed heating pad, trigger point balls, stretching, meds. No help. Getting shots in two weeks! Thanks guy's
After an X RAY and a CT scan, I am finally seeing a pain clinic doctor on Tuesday. I am hoping that a shot will relieve the pain but what about the bulging disk that is causing the pain? I don't think that is going away immediately without surgery??? The pain is debilitating and aggravating at the same time. The meds don't help much.
@@tribulationprepper787 We are in, the same sinking boat! I return for more shots next Tuesday!! I would use my own carving knife to yank this disc out if I could!! Prayers for your healing.💞
3 months dealing with sciatic pain. The pain is more in my back now but my foot will still go totally numb at random. PT helps. Thanks for the videos!🙏
I am very grateful for your videos, Bob and Brad! For sharing your knowledge, experience and sense of humor! This particular video is so timely, as my mom has just got sciatic pain in her calf... We will be fixing it with your help. Thank you very much. I wish you All the Best!

You Guys are the BEST ! Thank you for All the info , its starting to help me tackle my sciatica, am in pain constantly & over here in the UK , we have NHS Hospitals , but it takes months even years to get seen. I have had NO help what so ever in last 7 years not 1 single bit of physio, so am starting to try learn as much as poss & scraping some money together to hopefully go see a back specialist such as yourselves over here. Just had to say big thanks your channel is REALLY HELPFULL. All the Best & Peace from over the pond in the UK.👍😀
The tummy lie-down (3mins+deep breathing) along with new movement patterns (squat, lunge, and stop-twist) were absolutely IMPORTANT in getting rid of my back pain. Regarding the press-ups, those actually made me worse, so I stopped. Everyone, get McGill's book!
I have a moderate herniation at L5-S1. PT did not help. The pain is horrific. It is ruining my life. Having surgery next month. Love your videos. Bought your Booyah stick.
None of what was in this video worked for me. It was screaming pain for 15 mos. What did work was home PT after my shoulder surgery. He used massage, TENS and stretches and it was a miraculous cure. I've birthed 2 posterior babies but sciatica was THE worst pain I've ever experienced.
Mine burns like my skin is on fire 🔥 it so painful and disabling I'm so tired of suffering from this and have 7 herniated disc on top of pinched nerves it's hard to get through the work day
I truly understand what you are going through I have the pinched nerve on the side of my knee pain radiating from my back, down my hip, thigh, knee, leg, ankle, and foot until my foot is numb and heavy.
I can't stand or walk for any period of time. I have to lean on something or sit. I still have pain but I don't get numb as fast. I lose feeling in my legs and feet if I stand or walk at times.
Sometimes I get up from sitting on a chair or getting out of bucket seats in a car and 20 seconds later I go into a full body spas for 30 seconds. I can talk and move a little abd I wait for tge spaz to go away Doctors can not tell me what’s up or what to do Maybe these excersizes will help
@@Greenenergyofphilly have you talk to your doctor about getting oral medication? Baclofen (Lioresal, Gablofen) is most commonly used for muscle relaxer when a patient has spasticity. Another alternative is Botox. Yes Botox like what movie stars use to make them look younger. Botox was I believe used more commonly before Hollywood stars used them.
These exercises really do seem to help, but only while I am on the floor doing them. It seems like once I am upright again it only takes 20 minutes or so for the muscles (gluteus, I suppose) to tighten up again and pinch that nerve going through the hip. Also, when I do outside work that involves lots of walking, things loosen up and my hip pain is gone but as soon as I sit again, for more than 10 minutes (for instance, when driving to the next stop), my hip has tightened up again and it is very painful to try to stand upright when getting out of my vehicle. Wish I knew how to break the spasm cycles which are pinching the nerve. Or maybe it's the nerve that is swelling when I am sitting for those brief periods. (I'm imagining a carpal tunnel type situation but in the hip.)
I am thinking about seat belting my hips into my chair in order to prevent my very poor posture. I am sure my life long slouching has contributed to my sciatica.
@@BobandBrad Thanks. I have Spondylolisthesis too, can't do extensions. Was going to ask about that and saw Kathy's question. I don't suppose you can edit the video to explain that contraindication? Glad to see Bob continuing... voice sounds better like others mentioned. You guys are awesome!
