  • Solid State Warrior was a Japan-only release. The Land Of Pure Imagination was its' American counterpart with the tracks "What You Don't Know About The Girl", "Sleep Children" and "'Til We Meet Again" being replaced by the tracks "Pray for the Many", "In the Name of Romance" and "Appleby". I decided to include The Land Of Pure Imagination's tracks after Solid State Warrior.

    --Biography--
    Manning was a founding member of bands Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, The Moog Cookbook, and TV Eyes. He has also spent several years as an integral member of Beck's backing band, and made contributions to several recordings by the band Air. He is known for his distinctive style of playing various analog and digital synthesizers. Electronica, power pop, psychedelia and jazz are his primary genres although he also does session work with a number of artists as well as commercial and soundtrack music. As well as providing session work, he used to work frequently with producer Jerry Finn, through whom he was credited as keyboardist on a number of recordings with pop-punk band Blink-182. In early 2006, Manning released his first solo album in Japan only: Solid State Warrior. It was subsequently issued in the U.S. under a different title, The Land of Pure Imagination, along with an altered song content. Three tracks from Solid ("What You Don't Know About the Girl," "Sleep Children," and "Till We Meet Again") were switched-out for three newer tracks ("Pray for the Many," "In the Name of Romance," and "Appleby").
    When Roger Joseph Manning (he added the "Joseph" to avoid confusion with another musician named Roger Manning) was ready to issue his debut solo album, Solid State Warrior, in 2005, rather than use the traditional retail model, he opted for digital distribution via a novel but short-lived service called Weedshare that attempted to harness peer-to-peer tastemaking capabilities. Neither the service nor the album gained traction -- a pity, since as sunshine pop albums go, this one was, well, solid. It was released with this track ordering and title on the Pony Canyon label in Japan, then reconfigured slightly for a U.S. album release the next year under a different title, The Land of Pure Imagination. Replaced were three tracks: two forgettable lullaby ditties ("Sleep Children," "Til We Meet Again") and one bona fide candy-coated delight (replete with toy piano melody), "What You Don't Know About the Girl." The rest of the album continues in the sunny power pop mold; it doesn't tip over into exceedingly twee or baroque territory, but rather emphasizes bright melodies and playful arrangements. Manning, who played all the instruments and produced, sometimes toys too much with fuzz and treble and such, but his songwriting sensibilities, honed over his years with Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, and the Moog Cookbook, remain acute if sometimes oversweetened. Well worth seeking out.

      In case you didn't know, Conor, there were other outflow bands/albums before and after Jellyfish...Beatnik Beatch (Pretty average except for 'Sergeant Lasard'), Imperial Drag ('Spyder'), Jason Falkner's entire solo album "Presents Author Unknown" (outstanding), and later "Can You Still Feel", and finally The Grays (Just fantastic!) For those that know. Saw Jellyfish live back in the day. What a scene, they had bubble machines going, incense wafting, and the greatest bubblegum rock mix playing I'd ever heard running up to the show here in DC at the long gone original 9:30 Club, back then a black basement hole venue. (The Godfathers show there had me losing my hearing until the next day.) Anyway, The Aquanettas opened for Jellyfish. It was nutty good. Their track "15 Men", about a girl who goes on a dating spree, is the stuff of legend, beachy and punchy. So much creativity in Jellyfish, but in the end, Roger's ego destroyed them from what I've read. We're lucky to have been gifted two seminal albums, nothing like them.

    I know they didn't like being compared to Queen, but Jellyfish had the formula (aside from creative compatibility) to be that big. Manning, Falkner, and Sturmer all write amazingly, sing amazingly, and play amazingly. You can even add Dover to that. How amazing would Jellyfish still be if they all contributed and got along?

    From the description: "Two forgettable lullaby ditties ('Sleep Children,' 'Til We Meet Again'" -- Different strokes, and all that: I love both of those tracks. I would also argue that "'Til We Meet Again" is less a lullaby, and more, it seems to me, a song about losing someone. Anyway, I do thank you for uploading the album and all of its variant tracks.

    IMO.. it seems that Roger was more talented than Andy, he really has a range of what he produces... hard to say with Andy since all he has written is cartoon songs, such a waste.

    • @magazinekitchen
      @magazinekitchen 6 лет назад +4

      I enjoy Andy's tunes, cartoon and otherwise, but I certainly believe the two solo albums by Roger shows just how much he contributed to the Jellyfish sound, which was considerable.

      Always wondered what happened to Andy and where he lent his talents. But discovering this album and how beautiful it is.... makes me sad why the world knows so little of Roger. I need to find more of his projects.
