Can someone tell me. In the year 1989 or 1990, I as a very young boy had travelled from Ahmedabad Gujarat to Mt. Abu station in Rajasthan. I don't have the slightest clue would that train have a steam locomotive or a diesel locomotive. It was metre gauge for sure seeing the seating arrangement. I've sat in steam locomotive trains in UK. Steam locomotive trains are plenty in UK running daily, some even on the mainline. To this day I don't know if I've sat in a steam locomotive train in India or not. It all depends on whether my journey from Ahmedabad to Mt Abu has a steam locomotive or not.
If it was 1990, it would surely have been a diesel locomotive by Alco loco works of the USA. Steam locomotives saw their end somewhere in the early 80s. It was around the same year that you have mentioned when I too had undertaken a train journey from Bombay to Abu Road via Ahmedabad. I was travelling with my older brother and mother then.

It is unlikely to be steam engine as they were almost phased out by mid -80s.
